NCAA Betting Preview: Temple vs. San Diego State

Temple vs. San Diego State -5.5 O/U 125.5

Underrated Owls are comfortable in the half court and won’t back down to surging San Diego State (33-2). The Aztecs have made us plenty of money this season, and San Diego State has had a season to remember. A trio of powerful players inside helped San Diego State lead the Mountain West Conference in rebounding margin, scoring defense (59 ppg) and FG defense (38%). There is much to like about the Aztecs and their stat profile. San Diego State features a top-10 effective FG defense and the Aztecs play at a slow pace with efficiency. With Gay at guard, SDSU’s perimeter defense is also exceptional. Temple head coach Fran Dumphy is a solid strategist who got his first NCAA Tournament win over Penn State on a last second bucket. Temple must play better today to pull the upset, but their defense and deliberate approach should keep them in this contest. The Owls have a big time rebounder inside with senior Lavoy Allen and if Scootie Randall’s return from Read more

Second Round Pointspread Preview: UCLA vs. Florida

UCLA vs. Florida -6 O/U 133

We cashed with the lower-seeded UCLA Bruins as underdog over Michigan State Thursday and much respect for head coach Ben Howland and his job blending the Bruins and bringing them back to a second place PAC-10 finish. Howland’s trademark defense had UCLA with the league’s best FG defense holding opponents to less than 41%. While he’s at his best as a underdog coach at 38-22 ATS long term, must give the edge to the Gators in this match-up as Billy’s boys are better and playing in their home state with extra fan support. Florida won the SEC regular season title with the SEC’s best shooting team, and the Gators momentum should continue as Florida is on a 11-2 SU run with their only losses to Kentucky (2x) since February 1st. Despite Florida playing at a slower pace, we may see more scoring than expected in a Gators win.

We found our groove and a little green Friday going 5-2 in the NCAA Tournament despite two late, very close ATS losses. Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Kansas State vs. Wisconsin

Kansas State vs. Wisconsin -3.5 O/U 125

Well-coached Wisconsin and Bo Ryan took out Belmont in their opening NCAA Tournament game with less trouble than expected. The Badgers are the more trusted side again with their coaching and disciplined approach against inconsistent Kansas State. The Badgers value the ball so much better than the careless ‘Cats, who had the second-most turnovers in the Big Xll. Contrast that to Wisconsin, who had the fewest turnovers in America while also having the nation’s best assist-to-turnover ratio. The Badgers shoot free throws better than any team in the field. Despite finding their groove down the stretch to finish on a 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS run, Kansas State is likely to fall victim to a more disciplined team that features a pair of All-Big Ten performers at the point and in the post. On Wisconsin, to the Sweet Sixteen.

Handicapper Preview: Morehead State vs. Richmond

Morehead State vs. Richmond -4 O/U 126.5

One of these Cinderella’s will be in the Sweet Sixteen, as 13-seed Morehead State (25-9) takes on 12-seed Richmond (28-7) at the Pepsi Center. I’m betting on the Spiders of Richmond, who are on an 8-0 SU and ATS tear after their opening game victory over Vanderbilt; a winner for this sports bettor, handicapper and Fairway’s faithful followers. Richmond’s resume and play is more impressive than Morehead State, who pulled a truly shocking upset of Louisville with their 3-point dagger in the final seconds. But the Eagles rise must now come crashing down against a Richmond team that features a top-20 offense and defense in effective FG percentage. Richmond led the Atlantic-10 in assist-to-turnover ratio and the Spiders patient and disciplined approach in their Princeton-style offense will create problems for a Eagles team that is careless with the ball and turnover prone themselves. With little time to prepare of this style and approach and coming Read more

NCAA Tournament Handicappper Preview: Cincinnati vs. UConn

Cincinnati vs. Connecticut -3.5 O/U 130

Big East battle at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC. What a remarkable run by UConn (27-9), as coach Calhoun has the Huskies playing their best ball with great chemistry and cohesion. Five wins in five days capture the Big East tournament title is a fantastic feat, and the final three wins were as underdog. UConn provided an encore with a beating of Bucknell in the NCAA Tournament opener. Now they take on one of the most consistent defensive teams in the nation as the Bearcats blueprint is a fundamental and methodical approach predicated on defense. Cincinnati (26-8) has a strong combined rebounding and turnover margin that translates to success and the Bearcats allowed less than 60 ppg and 41% shooting this season. As the 293rd ranked team in pace of play combined with subpar shooting from the field and free throw line, we can expect a defensive dominator in this match-up. UCONN beat Cincinnati in the Bearcats den 67-59 in late February. This could be the game the Read more

March Madness Handicapper Preview: Butler vs. Pittsburgh

Butler vs. Pittsburgh -7.5 O/U 125.5

The Panthers (28-5) also provided us a bankroll boost when they pulled away and beat N.C. Asheville 74-51 Thursday. Now Pitt plays giant killer Butler (24-6), last season’s NCAA Tournament finalist and the Bulldogs are again playing their best ball again at tournament time. A last second layup by senior star Matt Howard allowed the Bulldogs to knock off Old Dominion 60-58 and we could see another defensive battle. Senior Shelvin Mack can create and score from the outside and Butler is getting solid point play from But Pitt is too strong for Butler in this match-up, as the Big East champs were the nation’s #2 rebounding margin team led by Gary McGee and athletic forwards Gilbert Brown and Nasir Robinson. The Panthers led the Big East in scoring margin, scoring defense (60 ppg) and FG defense (38%). The Panthers also shoot the ball well and were the leagues #2 shooting team from the perimeter led by Ashton Gibbs, the league’s top shooter from the arch at Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Gonzaga vs. BYU

Gonzaga -1.5 vs. BYU O/U 148.5

What’s this? An 11-seed favored over a 3-seed in the round of 32?! So much for the NCAA committee getting Gonzaga (25-9) seeded correctly. We cashed with the Bulldogs in their opening win over St. John’s, and now the Zags appear to have a real advantage inside over BYU (31-4). That after bullying the Red Storm on the boards, outrebounding St. John’s 43-20 in their 86-71 bouncing of the Big East boys. St. John’s coach Steve Lavin said his team had not been dominated on the boards like that all season. BYU beat Wofford 74-66 and the Terrier’s ‘meaningless’ last second 3-pointer gave us the ultimate back door cover (+8.5). But before you think we were lucky, see some of our recent close ATS losses and know that approx. 40% of all college basketball results land within five (5) points of the betting line.  BYU will need some good fortune to beat the Bulldogs.  The Cougars have had a special season led by the nation’s leading Read more

Second Round Betting Preview: West Virginia vs. Kentucky

West Virginia at Kentucky -3.5 O/U 134

Thought I would be on West Virginia and coach Huggins team with their trademark defense, but after further review I’ll pass. Despite a Big East team that is better in the half court than Kentucky and led the league in offensive rebounding and no. 2 in assist-to-turnover ratio, the Mountaineers just do not have enough solid shooters. West Virginia hit less than 42% FG in league play, and in fact their season FG percentage is the lowest of anyone playing in Saturday’s NCAA Tournament. Defense should determine this winner, yet it’s Kentucky’s that is playing well right now holding four of their last five opponents to less than 60 points. The young Wildcats escaped Princeton in the opening round as the smart kids out-foxed the ‘Cats. But these Wildcats can also claw on defense, holding SEC opponents to less than 40 percent shooting while leading the league in blocked shots and committing the fewest turnovers in SEC Read more
