Underrated Owls are comfortable in the half court and won’t back down to surging San Diego State (33-2). The Aztecs have made us plenty of money this season, and San Diego State has had a season to remember. A trio of powerful players inside helped San Diego State lead the Mountain West Conference in rebounding margin, scoring defense (59 ppg) and FG defense (38%). There is much to like about the Aztecs and their stat profile. San Diego State features a top-10 effective FG defense and the Aztecs play at a slow pace with efficiency. With Gay at guard, SDSU’s perimeter defense is also exceptional. Temple head coach Fran Dumphy is a solid strategist who got his first NCAA Tournament win over Penn State on a last second bucket. We cashed with the lower-seeded UCLA Bruins as underdog over Michigan State Thursday and much respect for head coach Ben Howland and his job blending the Bruins and bringing them back to a second place PAC-10 finish. Howland’s trademark defense had UCLA with the league’s best FG defense holding opponents to less than 41%. While he’s at his best as a underdog coach at 38-22 ATS long term, must give the edge to the Gators in this match-up as Billy’s boys are better and playing in their home state with extra fan support. Florida won the SEC regular season title with the SEC’s best shooting team, and the Gators momentum should continue as Florida is on a 11-2 SU run with their only losses to Kentucky (2x) since February 1st. Despite Florida playing at a slower pace, we may see more scoring than expected in a Gators win.

Well-coached Wisconsin and Bo Ryan took out Belmont in their opening NCAA Tournament game with less trouble than expected. The Badgers are the more trusted side again with their coaching and disciplined approach against inconsistent Kansas State. The Badgers value the ball so much better than the careless ‘Cats, who had the second-most turnovers in the Big Xll. Contrast that to Wisconsin, who had the fewest turnovers in America while also having the nation’s best assist-to-turnover ratio. The Badgers shoot free throws better than any team in the field. Despite finding their groove down the stretch to finish on a 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS run, Kansas State is likely to fall victim to a more disciplined team that features a pair of All-Big Ten performers at the point and in the post. I’m betting on the Spiders of Richmond, who are on an 8-0 SU and ATS tear after their opening game victory over Vanderbilt; a winner for this sports bettor, handicapper and Fairway’s faithful followers. What’s this? An 11-seed favored over a 3-seed in the round of 32?! So much for the NCAA committee getting Gonzaga (25-9) seeded correctly. We cashed with the Bulldogs in their opening win over St. John’s, and now the Zags appear to have a real advantage inside over BYU (31-4). That after bullying the Red Storm on the boards, outrebounding St. John’s 43-20 in their 86-71 bouncing of the Big East boys. St. John’s coach Steve Lavin said his team had not been dominated on the boards like that all season. BYU beat Wofford 74-66 and the Terrier’s ‘meaningless’ last second 3-pointer gave us the ultimate back door cover (+8.5). Thought I would be on West Virginia and coach Huggins team with their trademark defense,but after further review I’ll pass. Despite a Big East team that is better in the half court than Kentucky and led the league in offensive rebounding and no. 2 in assist-to-turnover ratio,the Mountaineers just do not have enough solid shooters.
