College Football Betting News and Notes - Week 2

09.09.2013     06:38 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another week void of any significant upsets. Washington State beat USC as over a two-touchdown underdog while Navy dispatched of Indiana as a double-digit underdog. Needless to say, most rec bettors who like to four- and five-team moneyline parlay big favorites have yet to hit many road blocks.

With most offshore books now offering lines on FBS vs. FCS games bettors will have another crack at betting against Ron Turner and his Florida International squad. Yes, the Panthers played two teams in Maryland and UCF that they probably would have lost to any other season, but it was the way that FIU lost (43-10, 38-0) that has them vying with Idaho and New Mexico State for the label of Worst Team in the Country. Don't sleep on this week's opponent Bethune-Cookman who last season rushed for 233 yards on Miami and hung tough for the first half. The year before that B-C outgained the Canes 422-335.

After a dismal showing in its opener at Virginia, BYU wasn't on the radar of many bettors. Meanwhile, a lot of folks were drinking the Texas kool-aid after they dismantled woeful New Mexico State. And for a sophisticated as the betting markets are portrayed at times, there is no Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Cincinnati Bearcats at Illinois Fighting Illini

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati at Illinois
Saturday, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Cincinnati -7.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Cincinnati -7.5 O/U 54.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Cincinnati -13
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Cincinnati

The word is clearly out that Illinois is not to be respected at all this season. Last week we saw the Illini open -24 vs. Southern Illinois and close -17. They were in control for much of the game but SIU was able to punch in a score in the fourth quarter and U of I slipped by with a 42-34 win. And that margin was how it looked in the box score – Illinois with slight edges in first downs and total yardage.

This week, the Illini take a big step up in class as they play host to Cincinnati. The Bearcats weren't particularly sharp last week against Purdue but still rolled to a 42-7 victory. Keep in mind that from a power rating standpoint, some would argue that Purdue is stronger Read more

College Football Betting News and Notes - Week 1

09.03.2013     07:01 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Penn State holding a narrow 13-10 lead late in the third quarter of Saturday's game against Syracuse, the Orange came up with a forced fumble on big PSU pass play. Syracuse's Allen Robinson looked like he had a clear lane to the end zone, a score that would have given his team a 17-13 lead. Instead, PSU offensive tackle Garry Gilliam (a converted tight end) made a great open field, touchdown saving tackle. Syracuse took over at the PSU 27-yard line and ended up missing a field goal. Early in the fourth quarter, Penn State kicked a field goal, tacked on a touchdown, and held on for the 23-17 win. The Nittany Lions failed to cover (-8) but had Gilliam not made that play, the straight up outcome of the game may have been different.

Favored by -34, Ohio State's Urban Meyer was all business (and perhaps all dick) when he went for and converted two, two-point conversions on the Buckeyes' first two touchdowns of the game. Perhaps some karma involved as Buffalo snagged an easy ATS victory in the 40-20 loss. Boosters Beware! Meyer is now 2-6 ATS when laying double-digits since arriving in Columbus.

Last season, Iowa at times toyed with the idea of Read more

College Football Handicapping: The impact returning starters has on the betting markets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Yesterday I talked about Phil Steele's impact on the betting markets. Today I'll discuss another factor that influences early season games and that's returning starters. Who is coming back is probably to first thing bettors look at when evaluating a team during the summer. And based on my experience, teams with "a lot" of returning starters get a lot more love in the betting markets than those with only "a few” returning starters. Before I begin note that there are many different definitions of “returning starters” but for the sake of argument, we'll use Phil Steele as our reference point since his publication is such a common fixture among the betting community. Keep in a mind, A LOT can happen over the course of three months and I've seen multiple examples where returning starter numbers in June were a lot different than in September.

I used the very arbitrary numbers of 17 or more and 10 or less when breaking down our returning starter "extremes." That gives us 31 Read more

College Football Handicapping: Phil Steele's impact on the betting markets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When it comes to college football, there are a lot of unknowns heading into a season. Most bettors know that Alabama will be good and Florida Atlantic will be bad but in between there are a lot of teams that will be far better or worse than the previous year. To pinpoint those teams we use preseason publications to give us a guideline – returning starters, two-deep, new coaches, last season's stats, etc. And no publication is better at providing that information than Phil Steele. But because Steele's work is bettor friendly, it also has a tendency to impact the betting markets. Steele's reasoning for teams going "up" or "down" is hardly groundbreaking but it’s more often than not sound logic. Bettors read Steele, and if they agree with his assessment of a team, they bet on said team be it Week 1, season over/under wins, or odds to win a division and/or conference.

Out of curiosity, we took the 17 teams that made Steele's Most Improved List and checked out the line moves on their Week 1 games (see chart below). Nearly half of them play FCS opponents which as of today aren't lined. For those who do have lined games, we see that Steele's top Read more
