College Football Betting: California the biggest steam play of Week 2

09.11.2015     09:16 AM     Printer Friendly
Check out the biggest line move of the week in college football as California opened -7.5 vs. San Diego State and was bet up to -14. The Golden Bears were favored only twice vs. FBS competition last season: -14 vs. Colorado (won 59-56 OT) and -3 vs. BYU (lost 42-35). Line history courtesy of The Greek.

College Football Handicapping: Kansas wants to run 100 plays per game

09.11.2015     09:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Live by the sword, die by the sword. A week removed from running 91 plays and losing to an FCS school at home, Kansas wants to speed up the offense even more. To the Jayhawks' credit, the offense did look improved as it gained 6.33 yards per play - they averaged 4.62 in 2014. However, South Dakota State needed only 72 plays to rack up 463 yards and 41 points. Memphis is obviously going to provide more resistance defensively and bettors aren't left with much to work with after the total was hammered up from 54.5 to 62.

“After watching the game, I felt like we could have got over 100 (or) got 100,” Likens said. “We’ve just got to get the ball snapped a little bit quicker. So we talked about that (Monday) and are going to try to do better this week.”

“We try to base our offense off Oregon, how fast they go,” KU quarterback Montell Cozart said. “We’ll try to get up to their speed

College Football Betting Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Akron Zips

Pittsburgh at Akron
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
Pittsburgh -13.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Pittsburgh -11.5 O/U 50
Recommendation: Under

Last year, when the Zips and Panthers squared off, we saw a defensive struggle from start to finish; a 21-10 Zips upset.  Neither team moved the ball consistently, and both squads relied on a dink-and-dunk offense that resulted in a complete dearth of big plays.

It’s one year later.  Akron’s defense is head and shoulders ahead of where it was last year based on talent alone.  Pitt is in their second game under defensive minded head coach Pat Narduzzi, the former Michigan State defensive coordinator, and he’s got the team’s attention coming off a dismal defensive showing Week 1.  Neither team has an elite QB, and Pitt just lost their best offensive weapon, Heisman candidate RB James Conner, to a season ending injury.  Yet this total is still sitting above 50 in most locations, thanks to an influx of Over money on Thursday morning.  That’ll get me into action with a wager on the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Addition by subtraction for Syracuse following loss of Hunt?

09.11.2015     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Losing a senior quarterback for the season and being forced to play a true freshman may not seem like an ideal situation but for Syracuse, perhaps it's a blessing in disguise. Terrel Hunt, who tore his Achilles, will be replace by Eric Dungey. Dungey stepped in during last week's game vs. Rhode Island and completed 10-of-17 passes for two touchdowns and no interceptions. One game against an FCS foe doesn't guarantee success but considering how poor the Orange's passing attack was last season (54%, 6 TDs, 17 INTs) it won't take much to upgrade.

"We feel confident that he can do all the things that we're asking him to do," Shafer said. "We don't feel like we have to truly scale things down a whole lot because his learning curve has been extremely small.

"He did a nice job over the last 10 days prior to Rhode Island of being locked into practice," Shafer said.

College Football Betting Preview: Oklahoma Sooners at Tennessee Volunteers

Oklahoma at Tennessee
Saturday, 3 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -1 O/U 61
CRIS Current: Oklahoma -1.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Oklahoma

Impressive pointspread covering wins posted by each of these teams last week leads into critical early season affair. Bandwagons have been hitched to both Oklahoma and Tennessee since spring practice with the Vols a sexy pick to contend in the SEC East.

Despite the fact that these teams combined to win their respective Week 1games by a combined 100-34 score it stands to reason there were portions of both playbooks that were saved for this matchup. Conference affiliation means next to nothing here since personnel gap in size and speed is slim to none. Matchups inside the schemes, execution of plays, special teams, and number of breaks are going to be the difference makers here so let’s take a look at the on field fundamentals.

Bob Stoops brought in “Air Raid” guru Lincoln Riley to be the Sooners’ new offensive coordinator with games like this in mind. The 32-year-old Riley learned under Mike Leach while at Texas Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Georgia Bulldogs at Vanderbilt Commodores

Georgia at Vanderbilt
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Georgia -19 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Georgia -20 O/U 50
Recommendaton: Vanderbilt

Saturday’s game against Vanderbilt will likely be the largest margin the Georgia Bulldogs will be favored by in any SEC game this season. Just less than three touchdown road chalk over anyone in the SEC is a tough task, especially for a team that has question marks at the quarterback position.

The Commodores are coming off of a home loss to Western Kentucky. Yes, they are a Conference-USA team, but the Hilltoppers sport a high powered offensive unit that was held to less than 250 total yards and only able to convert 2-of-12 on third downs.  Vandy outgained WKU by 140 yards and controlled the ball over 36 minutes, but losing the turnover battle 3-0, including two interceptions in the red zone, was too much to overcome.

The Bulldogs on the other hand had absolutely no issues with their Week 1 game shortened 51-14 home win over UL-Monroe. UGA quarterback Greyson Lambert had only 12 pass attempts as running backs Nick Chubb and Read more

College Football Gambling: Skip Holtz tries to play underdog card but bettors aren't buying it

09.10.2015     07:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana Tech head coach Skip Holtz knows pointspreads and was quick to pull out the underdog card for tonight's game at Western Kentucky. But the betting markets feel the favorable spot for the Hilltoppers isn't enough to warrant being home chalk. Tech played on Saturday albeit a 62-15 romp over Southern while WKU grinded out an ugly win over Vanderbilt last Thursday. And then there's the revenge angle after the Bulldogs unloaded on the Hilltoppers 59-10 last season. But as of Thursday morning, Tech has settled in as a -2 road favorite.

“When you look at what everyone is projecting, we’re playing at their place on a short week where they’ve had a full week to prepare for this game,” Holtz said Monday. “The experience they have coming back. The transfer players (from UAB) that are making a difference on
