Quick Lane Bowl Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at Boston College Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Maryland vs. Boston College
Quick Lane Bowl - Detroit, Mich.
Thursday, 11:30 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Boston College pk O/U 45
CRIS Current: Maryland -2.5 O/U 43.5
Recommendation: Boston College/Under

Projected snooze fest as Maryland (88th) and Boston College (115th) boast well below average offensive capabilities. Passing has been a major problem for the Terps (174.0 ypg) and the Eagles (144.2 pypg) which has placed an extreme burden on their respective ground games. Maryland has shown flashes of being a strong rush team and if you remove its sack yardage, the ypc average comes out to a solid 5.59. Boston College hasn’t found any success on the ground and they only averaged 4.0 ypc or more in three of 12 games (Georgia Tech, Wagner and Syracuse). Defensively however, BC has the big edge with the 8th ranked total defense, 8th ranked rush defense, and 32nd ranked pass defense.

While the overall statistical numbers do not show much separation between these teams, there is one fundamental aspect that could be a difference maker. Throughout the season it has been evident Read more

Dollar General Bowl Betting Preview: Ohio Bobcats vs. Troy Trojans

Ohio vs. Troy
Dollas General Bowl - Mobile, Ala.
Friday, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Troy -4 O/U 49
CRIS Current: Troy -4 O/U 49
Recommendation: Ohio

The Troy Trojans (9-3) have already played in Ladd Peebles Stadium with a late October win over South Alabama, 28-21. The 166-mile drive from Troy to Mobile will likely mean more Trojan faithful in the seats and perhaps a little home field advantage but there are a number of angles that point towards there being value on the underdog Ohio Bobcats.

The Trojans are led by second-year head coach Neil Brown and quarterback Brandon Silvers. Silvers put up respectable numbers in Sun Belt play (264 ypg, 12-6 TD-to-INT ratio) but a closer examination shows he struggled against the league’s better defenses. Against Appalachian State, Silvers finished with a 114.4 QB rating and dismal 85.6 against Arkansas State. Those were by far his two worst performances of the season vs. league foes. The Arkansas State game is of particular significance because the Red Wolves boast one of the better front sevens in the mid-major circuit with 125 tackles for Read more

College Football Handicapping: Bowl games trending UNDER the total

12.20.2016     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College football bowl game unders have been the best bet in town over the last week. Based on CRIS's closing numbers five of the six games went under the total with Monday's Central Michigan-Tulsa game pushing (65.5 was widely available elsewhere). The most noteworthy were the New Mexico and Las Vegas bowls that each moved 10 points under (some of which weather-related) and still won easily.

UTSA vs. New Mexico

CRIS Closer: 54
Result: UNM 23, UTSA 20 - UNDER

Houston vs. San Diego State

Appalachian State vs. Toledo

College Football Handicapping: Fournette and McCaffrey pass on bowl games

12.19.2016     09:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Big name college football players continue to opt out of the postseason with LSU's Leonard Fournette and Stanford's Christian McCaffrey deciding health and the NFL is more important. For LSU, not having Fournette probably won't mean much considering Derrius Guice ran for 1.249 yards and nearly 8 yards per carry. McCaffrey's backup, Bryce Love, also put up big numbers (664 yards, 7.38 ypc). The concern though with Love is that he's carried the ball more than 12 times only once this season and the Cardinal like to run the ball 40+ times per game. Of course it may not matter who is running the ball considering Stanford's bowl opponent, North Carolina, ranks 113th nationally against the run (235.5 ypg allowed). Neither loss has impacted the pointspread with LSU holding at -3 (-115) vs. Louisville and Stanford -3.5 vs. North Carolina.

College Football Gambling Alert: Las Vegas Bowl winds expected to die down Saturday afternoon

12.16.2016     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly
You've probably already noticed how much action the under has taken for Saturday's Las Vegas Bowl between Houston and San Diego State. CRIS opened 60, Pinnacle 55, and the market is now 51.5. That's a big move and crossing a slew of key numbers. Some of that push has no doubt been connected to the projected weather. Mid-week reports indicated that winds could reach as high as 30 mph. In fact, weather.com issued a "high winds warning" for the Las Vegas area until 12 am PT. But according to the hourly report (which as we all know hits at about 43% ATS), the wind is expected to die down considerably after kickoff (12:30 pm PT).

Camellia Bowl Betting Preview: Appalachian State Mountaineers vs. Toledo Rockets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Appalachian State vs. Toledon
Camellia Bowl - Montgomery, Ala.
Saturday, 2:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Toledo -1.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Toledo -1 O/U 57.5
Recommendation: Appalachian State

Appalachian State won the Camellia Bowl last year with a narrow 31-28 triumph over Ohio. It was the Mountaineers’ first ever bowl appearance at the FBS level. Toledo are playing in its fourth consecutive bowl game having won the previous three. Both clubs enter this game with identical 9-3 records. Two of Appalachian State’s losses coming against power five clubs; Tennessee and Miami (FL). The Mountaineers nearly pulled off a big upset in Knoxville, eventually losing in overtime. After the home blowout to the Hurricanes, the Mountaineers ripped off six consecutive wins and eight of their last nine to clinch a share of the Sun Belt title. Toledo finished second in the MAC West just behind undefeated Western Michigan. They played a relatively easy schedule with their toughest non-conference opponent being BYU on the road (55-53 loss). Both teams are led by strong running backs; Kareem Hunt for Toledo, Read more

College Football Betting: Tennessee says it's motivated to play in postseason

12.13.2016     06:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For most bowl games, motivation is a key factor. And for most teams, it's common to claim they are motivated. Tennessee is one of those squads as they take on Nebraska in the Music City Bowl. The Volunteers had their sights set on bigger things, most recently the SEC Championship. But an embarrassing loss to rival Vanderbilt in the regular season finale ended that hope. UT will play a Big Ten squad for the third straight year. In 2014 they blew out Iowa 45-28 and last season hammered Northwestern 45-6.

“Some of them don’t want to be here,” Nutt observed. “They want to be someplace else. They’re not mentally focused on this game, this week, playing the University of Minnesota.

“The result was we got beat.”

“Obviously, we did not finish the way we wanted to finish and that’s unacceptable in our program and I take responsibility for that
