College Footbal Betting Preview: Rice Owls at Southern Miss Golden Eagles

09.25.2014     01:43 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rice at Southern Miss
Saturday, 4 pm PT - FCS
CRIS Opener:
Rice -11 O/U 57
CRIS Current: Rice -8 O/U 57.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Rice -10
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Rice

Rice is absolutely an undervalued commodity right now following their 0-3 start.  The defending C-USA champs have yet to take a major step down in class offensively, having faced Texas A&M’s Kenny Hill, Notre Dame’s Everett Golson and Old Dominion’s Taylor Heinicke in their first three contests; a trio of opposing quarterbacks who have NFL potential.

Southern Miss QB Nick Mullens does NOT have NFL potential, and that’s putting it mildly.  Mullens is barely averaging six yards per pass attempt while throwing more interceptions than touchdowns through his first four contests.  The Golden Eagles offense is anything but explosive, a team that hasn’t averaged even 20 Read more

College Football Betting: Iowa State tries to tame Baylor's up-tempo offense

09.25.2014     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baylor -21 at Iowa State O/U 68.5

Easier said than done but Iowa State appears to have the right mentality heading into Saturday's game vs. Baylor. The Cyclones want to slow the pace of the game down and keep Baylor's offense off the field. In last year's 71-7 win, the Bears ran 92 plays to ISU's 60.

“We have to shorten the game,” Rhoads said.

“I think it has been evident through three games this far of the season that we are not operating at a fast tempo,” Rhoads continued. “(We haven’t) had a lot of snaps where we are above 20 seconds (on the play clock) or not even above 10 when we are snapping the ball.”

College Footbal Betting Preview: Missouri Tigers at South Carolina Gamecocks

Missouri at South Carolina
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
South Carolina -5.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: South Carolina -6 O/U 61.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: South Carolina -6
Rob Veno’s Recommendation: Over

Important game in the SEC East between teams coming off of subpar performances. This is South Carolina’s third consecutive divisional matchup and fourth home game while Missouri plays its first league game. Last week’s home upset loss to Indiana could’ve been a look-ahead situation for the Tigers who played either even or from behind the majority of the game. Zero chance either team shows up unfocused for this contest so the result figures to boil down to fundamentals.

The multi-pronged Missouri offense led by Matty Mauk has all the components to exploit what continues to be a very disappointing South Carolina defensive unit. Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Rob Veno has been creating his own Power Ratings for nearly two decades. His numbers are very well respected and an excellent tool for discovering value. Rob’s PRs are a baseline and do not include key injuries or situations but they also don't overreact as much as the betting markets do week to week. Below is a chart of CRIS's current lines and Rob's College Football Power Ratings for Week 5.

College Football Gambling: Air Force making strides on defense

09.24.2014     01:52 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boise State -13 at -Air Force O/U 57

So far so good for Air Force's defense following last year's disaster in which the Falcons allowed 490.3 ypg. Over half that came via the run, something AFA worked hard at shoring up during the offseason. Through three games, the Falcons have allowed 249 yards on 3.07 ypc. Boise State ran for 229 in last year's 42-20 win.

"We had to get pressure, be pretty multiple in our fronts, have to have some guys that can blitz. … We spent an enormous amounts of time on it in the spring and in August," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said.

College Football Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at Indiana Hoosiers

Maryland at Indiana
Saturday, 10:30 am PT - Big Ten
CRIS Opener:
Indiana -2.5 O/U 64.5
CRIS Current: Indiana -5 O/U 69.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Indiana -0.5
OTTO Sports' Recommendation: Maryland

Is Indiana ready for primetime? Bettors seem to think so as they bet Saturday's game from -2.5 to -4.5. What's fresh in everyone's mind is the Hoosiers' monumental upset win at Missouri. But let's not forget that IU is two weeks removed from getting bet as a road favorite and losing outright to Bowling Green. And while Indiana is a program on the upswing, bettor should no doubt approach with caution as prosperity can be a difficult thing to handle following years of ineptitude.

Maryland is off a great showing of its own with a 34-20 win at Syracuse. The box score tells as different story as the Terps were outgained 589-369. But Maryland played it conservative in the second half and was content Read more

Rob Veno's Power Rating: Penn State -12
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Penn State

Without a large margin for error, we're starting to see Northwestern's multiple "issues" heavily impact the play on the field. It is hard to say how much internal damage was caused by the offseason players' union. Certainly not a positive. There have also been rumblings that Pat Fitzgerald's vocal frustration has irked various players. The play on the field has been lacking due to the loss or injury of multiple "playmakers." And as mentioned in yesterday's blog, quarterback Trevor Siemian College Football Northwestern Wildcats Penn State Nittany Lions Big Ten Andrew Lange

College Football Betting: Minnesota's inept offense prompts Michigan money

09.24.2014     06:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We had no idea a negative QB rating was even possible at the collegiate level. But that is exactly what Minnesota registered in last week's 24-7 win over San Jose State. Freshman Chris Streveler completed 1 of 7 passes for 7 yards. Boasting a ratio that would make any Service Academy jealous, the Gophers ran the ball 58 times for 380 yards. Streveler will get the nod again this weekend at Michigan if Mitch Leidner (turf toe, MCL) can't go. The Wolverines aren't exactly a "bet on" team these days but have been steamed up from -8 to -12. And if there has been one positive for UM this season it's stopping the run (80.3 ypg allowed).

“We’re not going to be able to compete against a Big Ten school completing one pass,” coach Jerry Kill said.

“If Mitch is healthy, he’s going to play, as usual,” Streveler said. “I go in every week, preparing like I’m the starter, and if I have to be ready, I’ll be ready.”
