SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Appalachian State vs. Toledon
Camellia Bowl - Montgomery, Ala.
Saturday, 2:30 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Toledo -1.5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Toledo -1 O/U 57.5
Recommendation: Appalachian State

Appalachian State won the Camellia Bowl last year with a narrow 31-28 triumph over Ohio. It was the Mountaineers’ first ever bowl appearance at the FBS level. Toledo are playing in its fourth consecutive bowl game having won the previous three. Both clubs enter this game with identical 9-3 records. Two of Appalachian State’s losses coming against power five clubs; Tennessee and Miami (FL). The Mountaineers nearly pulled off a big upset in Knoxville, eventually losing in overtime. After the home blowout to the Hurricanes, the Mountaineers ripped off six consecutive wins and eight of their last nine to clinch a share of the Sun Belt title. Toledo finished second in the MAC West just behind undefeated Western Michigan. They played a relatively easy schedule with their toughest non-conference opponent being BYU on the road (55-53 loss). Both teams are led by strong running backs; Kareem Hunt for Toledo, Read more

College Football Betting: Tennessee says it's motivated to play in postseason

12.13.2016     06:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For most bowl games, motivation is a key factor. And for most teams, it's common to claim they are motivated. Tennessee is one of those squads as they take on Nebraska in the Music City Bowl. The Volunteers had their sights set on bigger things, most recently the SEC Championship. But an embarrassing loss to rival Vanderbilt in the regular season finale ended that hope. UT will play a Big Ten squad for the third straight year. In 2014 they blew out Iowa 45-28 and last season hammered Northwestern 45-6.

“Some of them don’t want to be here,” Nutt observed. “They want to be someplace else. They’re not mentally focused on this game, this week, playing the University of Minnesota.

“The result was we got beat.”

“Obviously, we did not finish the way we wanted to finish and that’s unacceptable in our program and I take responsibility for that

College Football Handicapping: Texas A&M's defense could shine vs. Kansas State

12.12.2016     09:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rough finish to the regular season for the Texas A&M Aggies as they allowed 54 points to LSU. All told A&M hasn't covered a game since September and one of the main reasons was an out-of-gas defense. The Aggies' stop unit was on the field for 974 plays this season which was the third-most in college football. But with over a month between games and a slow-paced bowl opponent in Kansas State, we'll get one of A&M's better defensive performances.

"You look back as a coach, the first thing you say is 'Well your offense wasn’t able to keep your defense off the field.' That’s not necessarily true. You take a team like Ole Miss, who had less time of possession than us ... throughout the year, but still played almost 80 [defensive] snaps less during the course of the season than our defense did. Our ability on third down has got to get better."

"We have to get off the field on defense on third down and eliminate basically playing almost two more games than the average team in our

College Football Gambling: Navy in tough spot following AAC title game loss

12.08.2016     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you're wondering why Navy dropped from -10 to -6 for this weekend's rivalry game vs. Army, go read this article.

"The AAC championship was great and all, but this is the game you look forward to playing here," Navy offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper said. "To miss that game, after both those guys were having such great seasons, it's tough. I feel for those two guys."

"I think for sure it gives us an advantage," Army linebacker Alex Aukerman said. "We've been preparing for them before Thanksgiving break. They've had to focus on two more teams. I definitely think it's something we should utilize for our advantage."

"I've thought about this many a night because the Army-Navy Game should be a standalone game, and we'd like to be in the conference championship game," Niumatalolo said. "Any way you cut it, it just doesn't work out great for us. Obviously, we would have loved to have won that [AAC championship] game, but even if you did, you still
