A perfect match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

Super Bowl XLVIII Betting News: Sportsbooks cautious on prop bets due to weather

01.21.2014     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sounds as if Las Vegas sportsbooks are going to sit on some of their Super Bowl XLVIII prop bets with the weather being such an unknown at this point.

“Everything, except for the basic stuff, is going to pushed back a day or two so we can get a much more clearer picture of what the weather is going to be like,” Jay Rood, sports book director at the MGM Mirage, said in a telephone interview from Las Vegas.

“We’ll see what the weather is looking like at that time and make our numbers based on that,” Sherman said by phone. “Every day we’ll just check it and if it looks like things are changing, we’ll make the necessary adjustment. We’d rather it be nice conditions and hopefully not have an effect on the game as far as causing more turnovers or if a quarterback is having trouble throwing the ball in windy conditions.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: A trip down Super Bowl memory lane

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
On the one hand, the Super Bowl is just another game for a professional bettor.  On the other hand, the Super Bowl has two major differences.  First and foremost are the prop bets; quite literally hundreds of wagering opportunities that allow bettors to wager from everything on the coin toss and the length of the national anthem to whether Russell Wilson will throw more touchdown passes than Manchester United will score goals on Super Bowl Sunday.  I’ll write about those next week.

The other biggest difference between Super Bowls and other games?  Simple – the Super Bowls stand out in our memories; every one of them.  I’ve been in Vegas since the 1998 football season, and I can tell you where I watched every Super Bowl, what the pointspread was and who covered. Thank you in advance for indulging me a brief trip down memory lane.

My first Super Bowl in Las Vegas was when the Broncos faced the Falcons as favorites of about a TD back in January 1999.  I watched the game in the stadium seating at the Imperial Palace racebook.  My handicap was simple, thinking Denver had a big edge having played in (and beaten) the Read more

Super Bowl XLVIII Betting News: Early money comes in on Denver Broncos

01.20.2014     07:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Immediately following last night's NFC Championship, various offshore and Las Vegas sportsbooks were quick to hang a line on Super Bowl XLVIII (Sunday, Feb. 2). Offshore, CRIS opened Seattle -1.5 while Pinnacle opened a pick 'em. Both shops opened the total at 47.5. In Las Vegas, LVH threw up Seattle -2 O/U 47 while the Wynn had Seattle -1 O/U 48.5. A majority of the early money has been on the Broncos who are anywhere from -1 to -2.5 offshore and in Las Vegas. The current market outliers are CRIS (Denver -2.5) and the Mirage (Denver -1). We'll keep you posted on any signficiant line moves leading up to gameday.

Here's a link to all of Las Vegas' Super Bowl XLVIII parties courtesy of The Vegas Parlay. No offense to the Wynn, but if we're forking over 35K for the "Hail Mary Package" there had better be a meet-and-greet with the Queen of England as well as even money juice on all bets.

Gaming Control Board hits Cantor with $5.5 million fine

01.14.2014     11:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Earlier this week reports came out the Cantor Gaming (now CG Technology) was being fined $2 million by the Gaming Control Board for its connection to the Mike Colbert/Pinnacle fiasco. Well, it turns out the fine is a little steeper than $2 million. How about $5.5 million – which is apparently a Nevada record. Also, if you want you can read the official "complaint", here's the PDF (a few highlights below).

69. The Indictment also alleges Paul Sexton and Michael Colbert acted in concert to launder money which represented the proceeds of criminal conduct.

70. Paul Sexton placed approximately 4,464 wagers with CANTOR GAMING from July of 201 1 through October 24, 201 2. The total amount of these wagers was approximately $22,000,000.00.

71 . Paul Sexton only placed wagers for Gadoon Kyrollos with CANTOR GAMING.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Moneyburners!

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I took an in-depth look at five of the biggest moneymakers in the NBA through the first half of the season.  This week I’m going to focus on the teams at the other end of the spectrum – bottom feeders and disappointments.  I’ll break down the three biggest money-losers of the season thusfar.  And I’ll take a look at a ‘morpher’; a team playing significantly worse than current market projections.

I’ll start with the three teams that can be collectively called ‘the hopeless trio’.  It’s hard to make money betting on the very worst teams in any sport, and the NBA is certainly no exception.  And there’s no question who the very worst team in the NBA is this year, because they have both the worst SU record in the league (7-29) and the worst pointspread mark (12-24 ATS).  That team?  The Milwaukee Bucks!

Bucks head coach Larry Drew has never coached a bottom feeder before.  He walked into a good situation in Atlanta with the Hawks, who made the playoffs all three years that he was coaching the team.  Here in Milwaukee, the playoffs Read more

NFL Gambling: Conference Championship early line moves and historical results

01.13.2014     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A quick look at the early line moves for this weekend's NFL Conference Championships. Denver opened -7 offshore and -6.5 at LVH but has since been bet down to -4.5/-5. Seen a small move towards the over. The two teams met in Week 12 with the Patriots (pk) winning 34-31 in overtime in Foxboro. The Broncos blew a 24-0 lead. Seattle opened -3.5 both offshore and in Las Vegas. A few shows moved off of the -3.5 to -3 with juice. The total has been bet down heavily from 41.5/41 to 39.5/40. The two squads split the regular season meetings: San Francisco (-2.5) won 19-17 but failed to cover at home in Week 14; Seattle (-3) won and covered 29-3 in Week 2.

In terms of historical results (see below), sides are split 7-7 ATS (favorite/underdog) while totals have trended over at 9-5 O/U. Road teams have covered four straight.

New England at Denver
CRIS Opener: Denver -7 O/U 54.5
CRIS Current: Denver -5 O/U 55
LVH Opener: Denver -6.5 O/U 55
LVH Current: Denver -5 O/U 55

San Francisco at Seattle
CRIS Opener: Seattle -3 O/U 41
CRIS Current: Seattle -3 (-130) O/U 39.5
