NFL Betting News: Oddsmaker says 49ers will take more money

01.10.2014     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco -1 at Carolina O/U 41

LVH oddsmaker Jay Kornegay says he expects San Francisco money at some point with a chance for the line to go to -3. We saw similar move late last week as the 49ers opened -2.5 and closed as high as -3.5 at Green Bay.

“I thought this thing would have a chance to go to 3 like we saw on the Packers game, and I still think we might see that,” Kornegay told The Linemakers on Sporting News. “Those who took Carolina plus 1 or 1.5 might have jumped the gun a little bit because they’ll probably get a better number closer to kickoff.”

Cantor Gaming hit with $2 million fine

01.08.2014     01:46 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Looks like Cantor Gaming is being hit with a $2 million fine for not knowing and/or doing anything about former employee Mike Colbert's actions.

The complaint said the company or Lee Amaitis, chief executive of the Las Vegas-based sports-betting unit, known until this week as Cantor Gaming, knew or should have known that one of their top executives was taking illegal bets. According to the complaint, failure to supervise an employee sufficiently to prevent criminal activity violates Nevada gaming regulations. Cantor Gaming's failure to do so "tends to reflect poorly on the reputation of gaming in the State of Nevada" and could hurt development of the industry, the complaint said.

College Basketball Handicapping: Nevada travels to UNLV

01.08.2014     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Battle of the Silver State goes tonight with Nevada taking on rival UNLV in Las Vegas. The Wolf Pack have been up and down this season but are off to a 2-0 start in Mountain West play. It coincided with the eligibility of forward AJ West who scored 27 points and grabbed 21 rebounds combined in both victories. Nevada is also slated to return Marqueze Coleman who can provide relief to Deonte Burton – Burton is no. 1 in the country in percentage of minutes used. UNLV, who is off a home loss to Air Force – its fourth home loss of the season – has won eight straight in the series but Nevada has covered three of the last four.

“I’m not sure how long it’s been since we won there,” Wolf Pack point guard Deonte Burton said (answer: the Wolf Pack last won at UNLV in November 2005). “It would be big for the program, it would be big for the fans and it would Read more

NFL Playoff Gambling: Sportsbooks offer differing opinions on Indianapolis-New England

01.07.2014     12:12 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting line move at Grande for Saturday's Indianapolis-New England game. Grande, which is commonly referred to as a "leading indication sportsbook" has moved its line six times – all towards the Indy side. Grande opened the Colts +7.5-10 and from there dropped to +7.5-15, +7.5-20, +7.5-25, +7ev, and to its current number of +7-25. That number is a far cry from Las Vegas shops like LVH and William Hill that offer 7.5-110. CRIS has also shown respect for the Colts; opening +7-110 and yet to move off the key number to +7.5.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Moneymakers!

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA regular season is less than two weeks away from the mid-way point of the campaign. But with the focus on football, the betting markets (and my own writing) have paid scant attention to the pro hoops ranks.  That ends here.

This week I’m going to focus on the good NBA teams; the moneymakers!  I’ll break down some of the best money earners in NBA thusfar and assess their profit making potential moving forward.  And I’ll take a look at a pair of ‘morphers’; teams that are playing significantly better than current market projections.

The Phoenix Suns are at the top of any moneymaker list; a classic example of how preseason expectations can affect ATS results for months, even when those expectations were clearly not right from Day 1 of the season!

Phoenix was lined in the range of 20 wins coming into the season.  The markets expected a major tank from first year, first time head coach Jeff Hornacek’s squad, angling for ping pong balls in the NBA lottery, not for a playoff spot.  But that clearly wasn’t the case, right from the get-go – they blew out Portland on Read more

NFL Handicapping: Early line moves for Divisional Round

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Next week's NFL Divisional Round playoff matchups are set and lines have been posted both offshore and in Las Vegas. So far we haven’t seen a significant amount of market activity. There was/is some differing opinion on the Colts-Patriots game with LVH opening NE -9 and most of Las Vegas currently -7.5. Offshore, most shops have NE -7 with juice. A few (CRIS, Heritage) are offering 7 -110 on both sides.

Vegas poker player tips cab driver $10K for returning forgotten $300K

01.02.2014     08:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In keeping with today's Good Samaritan theme, here's another gem. An unnamed Las Vegas poker player left $300K in a cab and had it returned courtesy of the cab driver. He "tipped" the cabbie $10K for his nice deed.

"It's good enough, I really appreciate it," Gamboa said about the reward. "I wasn't expecting anything from the people I help. I never expect anything from the people I do good for, but I really appreciate it and that he appreciated what I'd done for him."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: How to bet College Football Bowl Games Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I wrote an article in this space prior to bowl season (link) detailing my personal strategies for turning a profit during these three weeks of high stakes affairs.  But as I do my research for the upcoming games, I continue to find a bevy of outdated information widely available on the internet; strategies that haven’t worked in years, yet they’ve become a part of the gambling lexicon.

I did a national radio spot last week with a well-known host.  He brought up three strategies as the sharp Vegas method.  None of them work.  In fact, none of them have worked in years. I don’t think the host was an idiot – there’s just a bevy of bad information out there!

So my goal for this week’s column is to poke holes in the outdated information.  The betting markets are not a static entity; always morphing and evolving.  What worked five, ten or twenty years ago doesn’t necessarily work as 2013 shifts to 2014.  And when it Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Playoff bound, but Super Bowl XLVIII bound?

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last year, heading into Week 17, Atlanta was the team to beat in the NFC, having already clinched homefield advantage with their 13-2 (at the time) record.  Washington was the hottest team in the conference and Green Bay was considered very live for the title, with Aaron Rodgers just one year removed from his Super Bowl ring.  In the AFC, the playoff were expected to be an eventual battle between the Patriots and Broncos, with the other four teams (Baltimore, Cincinnati, Houston and Indy) largely considered to be fodder for the elites; non-factors.

What happened? A San Francisco-Baltimore Super Bowl, won by the Ravens; their third straight postseason win as an underdog.  Let’s not forget that Baltimore entered the playoffs in the midst of a late season 1-4 SU and ATS skid; a team that NOBODY expected to make noise in January and February.

In 2011, in the NFC, Green Bay was the unbeatable juggernaut with a 15-1 record as the defending champs, and the Saints weren’t far behind, just one year removed from a Drew Brees Super Bowl ring.  Meanwhile, the Giants were on the outside of the playoff picture, needing to beat Dallas just to get Read more
