A few requests for Pete Rose's new reality TV show

07.18.2012     09:24 AM     Printer Friendly
Pete Rose on reality TV? OK, but before we proceed, here are our demands. We want a list of everything he bet for that particular day. Did he 20* the Reds? Does he have an account at 5Dimes? Does he play totals or sides? These are things we NEED to know. Also, we'd love to hear the audio of a conversation with his local. "Yeah, Steve? It's Pete. What do you mean you're putting me on 20 cent lines? You got to be kidding." We see no reason why The Learning Channel can't incorporate that kind of stuff into the show.

MLB Betting Notes: White Sox call up rookie Hernandez vs. Boston

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago WS (Hernandez) at Boston (Doubront) -165 O/U 11

Chicago lefty Pedro Hernandez will make his MLB debut tonight in Boston. Hernandez has been in the minors since 2007. In 80.2 IP at Double- and Triple-A this season, he accumulated 48 strikeouts and 19 walks.

“He and [Jose Quintana] were in the same role [during spring training],’’ manager Robin Ventura said. “You kind of hope to catch lightning twice, really.’’

MLB Gambling News: Does Aaron Cook still have value?

07.18.2012     07:15 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston's Aaron Cook and his two strikeouts in 29.2 innings are a hot topic in the blogosphere. Some will immediately point to his inevitable regression. While others, like Deadspin, argue that his lack of walks (2) and strike throwing ability allow him to "defy the odds" when it comes to sabermetrics. My take on Cook is this: He's a veteran guy who is trying to prove he can still pitch at the MLB level. That motivation alone is certainly worth something. Next, he's getting a good amount of groundballs (58.5%) which has always been a huge part of his success. He also added a cutter to his arsenal which is a nice compliment to a sinker.

Now unfortunately, Cook IS going to regress. When that many balls are being put in play (.248 BABIP), some will eventually find holes, gaps Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Baltimore Orioles at Minnesota Twins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Britton) -105 at Minnesota (Deduno) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

The Orioles and Twins are set for their second game of their series tonight in Target Field. The Orioles expect to send once highly touted prospect Zach Britton to the hill. Britton will be making his first start of the season, while returning from a sore shoulder in 2011. Britton is a perfect example of the lack of development from the Orioles’ prized pitching prospects. The southpaw was sailing along quite nicely last season with a wonderful 2.93 ERA in April and May. However, the pitching coaches meddled with a good thing. They mixed around with Britton’s mechanics which included moving him to the first base side of the rubber. Well, he was never the same pitcher, and as mentioned eventually was hurt. This spring and moving forward the young left-hander has evolved under the tutelage of pitching development coordinator Rick Peterson. They’ve got his mechanics revamped, while taking Read more

MLB Betting News: White Sox send Humber to the mound vs. Red Sox

07.17.2012     08:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago WS (Humber) at Boston (Lester) -170 O/U 10

The Chicago White Sox welcome back Philip Humber (elbow) back the DL.

Humber since April 21 Perfect Game: 53 IP, 62 hits, 28 BBs, 47 Ks, 12 HRs, 7.47 ERA

"It's not fun being on the sidelines,'' Humber said. "I'm excited to get back. There's been a lot of hard work to get back and ready to help the team win.''

"In a rehab situation the main thing is to be healthy and build arm strength but at the same time it's nice to have a good performance, especially the last one to leave yourself with a nice taste in your mouth,'' Humber said. "Hopefully it's something to build off of coming back here.''

MLB Handicapping: Kansas City Royals get creative with pitching staff

07.17.2012     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With multiple arms on the DL and Jonathan Sanchez lasting only 1.1 innings last night, Kansas City's pitching staff has entered desperation mode. Tonight's schedule starter, Everett Teaford, came in for Sanchez last night and ended up tossing 79 pitches. So KC called up lefty Ryan Verdugo. It is an interesting move considering that three of Verdugo's last four appearances for Triple-A Omaha were out of the bullpen. Since June 29, he's only thrown nine innings so it is doubtful he'll be able to last longer than a few innings. Manager Ned Yost did say that as a result of Teaford's long relief appearance, the bullpen should be rested and ready for tonight.

"There was not really much we could do," Yost said Monday. "I knew that we were either going to blow the bullpen out or blow tomorrow's starting pitcher out, so we took the second route. I knew that we would find a way to get somebody else up here Read more

MLB Gambling Alert: OVER in play with McClelland behind the plate in New York

07.16.2012     01:44 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tim McClelland is one of the few umpires I still consider playing blind (Hirscbeck the other) even though he hasn't been as OVER heavy this year (10-7 O/U). I did notice five of his last six have cashed tickets with those six averaging 11.5 runs per game (9.5 runs per game avg. on the season). There were some mediocre arms in those six games but that is exactly what we are getting tonight in New York with Phil Hughes and Henderson Alvarez. Also note that both lineups have combined for 242 home runs and there were eight hit in last night’s Angels/Yankees game in the Bronx. Toss in the hot temps and grabbing the 10.5ov-115 is a bet worth making.

MLB Betting News: Pirates may regress but have favorable upcoming schedule

07.16.2012     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LVH oddsmaker Jay Kornegay weighs in on the Pittsburgh Pirates and their chances at not falling off the face of the earth the second half of the season. The Pirates are currently 49-39 and trail Cincinnati by one game in the National League Central. As much fun as it is to root for the Pirates the reality is it is going to be tough for them to finish above .500 let alone remain in the mix for a playoff berth. Concerns have already surfaced about Erik Bedard who has looked rough over his last three starts (14.1 IP, 8.16 ERA). AJ Burnett has also not been as sharp (5.40 last four starts). Pittsburgh is an amazing 13-3 in Burnett's starts this season despite a relatively modest 4.5 runs per game worth of support. And let's also not forget the offense has averaged six runs per game over the last month – a stat that simply cannot be sustained especially with that many holes in the lineup. But before we write them off, note their very favorable upcoming schedule. The Pirates play at Colorado (3), vs. Miami (3), vs. Chicago (3), at Houston (4), at Chicago (3), at Cincinnati (3), vs. Read more
