NFL Handicapper Preview: Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland at San Diego -13 O/U 44.5

We cashed an easy outright underdog winner on San Diego last Sunday night in their crushing of the Colts, 36-14. Of course, the score was a bit misleading as Indianapolis had five turnovers including a rare poor performance from Peyton Manning, who threw four interceptions.

San Diego (6-5) continues its late season surge as a big home favorite (-13) over their division rival Oakland Raiders (5-6) at Qualcomm Stadium Sunday. The Chargers trail Kansas City by one game in the AFC West and Chiefs may likely have a win over Denver earlier in the day when this one kicks off.

San Diego’s defense is ranked #1 in the NFL, holding opponents to 273 yards per game along with just 4.6 yards per play. We know the public likes to bet hot teams and remembers what they saw recently, and the recent series dominance and revenge factor have inflated this line. Combined with Oakland’s recent poor play the last two games – 33-17 home loss to the Dolphins last Read more

The Best in Sports Betting: Weekly Recap

12.03.2010     02:03 PM     Printer Friendly
Another week in the books at Sportsmemo as we near the end of the college football regular season. Conference championships get underway tonight with Miami-Ohio taking on Northern Illinois. For Saturday, C-USA, SEC, Big XII and ACC title winners will all be decided. Also in action is the Big East which means someone – maybe UConn? – is headed to the BCS. Looking for a two-team moneyline parlay? A $100 bet on Utah State (+7500) and UNLV (+6000) would net you $463,500. What do Boise State and Hawaii have to play for anyway?

The current state of college basketball totals market isn’t perfect with CRIS still reluctant to line every game on the board, but that hasn’t stopped Helmut from producing winners. Helmut is off to 15-3 83% mark with his totals which is scary considering he’s had less than 25% of the card to work with. When the market finally opens up, thing should get even better for Helmut and his clients. Read more

Betting the Civil War: Oregon Ducks at Oregon State Beavers

Oregon at Oregon State +16.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Oregon State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT – ABC

There aren't a lot of statistics that show Oregon State as having an edge over Oregon. It isn't that the Beavers are a bad football team; they just simply cannot match the Ducks when it comes to offensive and even defensive productivity. That doesn't mean however that the Beavers aren't capable in a one-game scenario of closing the gap. And I think that is the key question in this handicap; does Oregon State have the attributes to compete and even win against the mighty Ducks? The answer of course is yes as we saw Oregon State competitive against the likes of TCU and Boise State earlier in the year.

What the Beavers didn't do – and what is fresh in bettors’ minds – was show up for last week's game against Stanford. The Cardinal, needing to maintain its BCS status, rolled to a 38-0 shutout. Two weeks prior to that, it was the embarrassing home loss to Washington State. Most Read more

ACC Championship Betting Preview: Florida State vs. Virginia Tech

Florida State vs. Virginia Tech -3.5 O/U 52
Saturday, 4:45 pm PT - ESPN

The ACC was pretty embarrassed about the lack of fan support for its championship game last year. Nearly 30,000 tickets went unsold and you could hear a pin drop in the background. They picked up and moved the title game to Charlotte this year and as a result are expected to have nearly 70,000 people on hand. Most of the fan support is reportedly coming from Blacksburg which is just a couple hours away by car.

The matchup between Florida State and Virginia Tech represents a rematch from the first ever ACC title game back in 2005. For the Hokies this will be the fourth time in six years they have played for the title, having won the last two. For the Seminoles it marks the first time they’ve been to the title game since 2005 when they knocked off Virginia Tech as 14.5-point underdogs.

With the two division championship game format just coming to fruition five years ago there isn’t a big enough sample Read more

Betting the SEC Championship: South Carolina vs. Auburn

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Auburn -5.5 vs. South Carolina O/U 61
Saturday, 1 pm PT - CBS

For the past four years, the SEC Championship winner has also gone on to win the BCS title, beginning with Florida in 2006, LSU in 2007, Florida again in 2008 and Alabama last year. The favorite has gone 3-1 SU and 2-1-1 ATS, with LSU pushing at -7 in their 21-14 win over Tennessee and Alabama winning as an underdog against Florida in 2009. Alabama was the better team last year, even if they entered the game as an underdog, which makes the last real upset back in 2005 when Georgia knocked off third-ranked LSU, 34-14. Prior to that, it was 2001 when underdog LSU beat No. 2 Tennessee, 31-20.

This year will mark the first SEC Championship appearance for South Carolina and the fourth for Auburn since the title game was established in 1992. These teams met at Auburn in late September with the Tigers rallying for a 35-27 win. The Tigers scored on their opening drive, but South Carolina forced two fumbles and scored the next three Read more

Handicapping the Big XII Championship: Nebraska vs. Oklahoma

Oklahoma -4.5 vs. Nebraska O/U 54
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC

The Big XII Championship Game has been dominated by the South Division. The North hasn’t won since Kansas State upset undefeated Oklahoma in 2003 even though the Sooners still ended up playing LSU for the split national title. The other Big XII title game trend is the bevy of non-competitive affairs with seven of the last eight meetings decided by two touchdowns or more. Six of those meetings were true blowouts and decided by more than three touchdowns with the betting favorite covering all five championship games between 2004 and 2008.

Texas beat Nebraska 13-12 on a controversial last second field goal (literally last second, with one tick left on the clock) in last year’s contest. That marked the first time since Oklahoma’s 27-24 win over Kansas State back in 2000 that the outcome of the game was in doubt in the latter stages of the fourth quarter. It was also the first pointspread cover by the underdog in the Read more

SMU at UCF -9 O/U 55
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 9 am PT – ESPN2

In 2005, following C-USA’s expansion to 12 teams and East-West divisions, the conference began holding a championship game between the two division winners. The team with the better regular season record would serve as the host. Over the last three years, C-USA’s title game featured good offense vs. good defense with defense prevailing in all three. In 2007 and 2008, Tulsa averaged over 40 ppg but was held to 25 and 24 respectively in losses to UCF and East Carolina. Last season, Houston was an offensive highlight film but was defeated 38-32 against the league’s second-ranked defense, East Carolina. This year, we get a little different matchup with C-USA’s top two statistical defenses pitted against one another.

UCF enters as a deserving favorite after winning 13 of its last 14 league games. The Knights have been more of a defense oriented team over the years and to no surprise led C-USA in Read more

NFL Betting Pick: Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta at Tampa Bay +3 (-120) O/U 44.5
Recommendation: Tampa Bay

The Falcons travel to Tampa Bay this weekend with destiny in their own hands. Last week they took care of business by knocking off the Green Bay Packers in a 20-17 thriller. As a result, they now own an NFC-best 9-2 record. Home field advantage in the playoffs is clearly on the mind of Atlanta with numerous players talking about it following last week’s game. In fact, the Falcons are riding high with a five-game winning streak, but as we know, it’s impossible to play at such a high level week in and week out in the NFL.

In the first meeting the Falcons emerged victorious, 27-21. With a chance to take the lead, Tampa Bay was stopped on a 4th-and-1 on Atlanta’s two-yard line late in the game. The Buccaneers did of course slip under the +10 number. That is exactly who Tampa Bay has turned into with the ability to compete against all comers. Yes, they’ve been outscored on the year, but their confidence is Read more

NFL home underdogs went 1-6 SU and 3-4 ATS and are 23-33 SU and 28-25-3 ATS this season. NFL Handicapping Free Play: Philadelphia Eagles at Chicago Bears

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia at Chicago +3 O/U 42.5
Recommendation: Chicago

It looks like Eagles top cornerback Asante Samuel will miss today’s key NFC game. Samuel leads the league in interceptions with seven and the Eagles lead the league in interception (19) and takeaways (25). The Bears will play a cover-2 defense and make it difficult for Philadelphia speed receivers DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Macklin to get loose for big passing plays. The Bears are last in the league in sacks allowed per pass play. They're giving up a sack every 8.2 attempts, but Cutler should make some big plays in the passing game without Samuel defending.

Here is a scouting report on the Bears vs. Eagles match-up today.

Playoff positioning and home field advantage at stake down the line as both teams are 7-3. The teams have split a pair of 24-20 decisions the past two seasons with the Bears winning outright a 3-point ‘Dog Read more
