MLB Betting Free Pick: Cleveland Indians at Toronto Blue Jays

Cleveland Indians (Masterson) v. Toronto Blue Jays (Romero)

The Indians and Blue Jays will face-off tonight as Major League Baseball starts the second half of the season after the All-Star break. The Indians expect to send right-hander Justin Masterson to the hill. Masterson is simply a big time groundball hurler, which is the perfect fit against this power hitting Toronto Blue Jays team.

The Jays are second in MLB with 127 long balls in 2012. Once again, the ability for Masterson to keep the ball on the ground can help neutralize the home runs for the Blue Jays. The sinkerballer has allowed just five home runs over his last 13 starts.

Meanwhile the enigmatic Ricky Romero will toe the rubber for the Blue Jays. After posting a 2.92 ERA in 2011, the 2012 campaign just hasn’t gone the southpaw’s way with a 5.22 ERA. Equally troubling is a 76/58 strikeout to walk ratio, which speaks to his difficulties. We all know the difficulties for the Indians facing left-handed pitchers this season with a 9-16 record. This is for good reason as the Indians feature a strong left-handed biased lineup. However, Read more

MLB Handicapping: Change in repertoire changes McDonald

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Fan Graphs pinpoints the reason for Pirates RH James McDonald’s drastic turnaround from a career 4.00 ERA pitcher to one who currently owns a 2.37 mark this season. His K:BB ratio has also greatly improved from 1.87 career to 3.22 in 2012.

The joint decision between the Pirates staff and McDonald to virtually eliminate his changeup from his arsenal of pitches and add a slider has led to his breakout first half. Fan Graphs details how the slider has become McDonald’s secondary pitch and his most effective in generating swings and misses. They do however caution that a regression could be coming but overall, the 27 year old righty will remain a much improved pitcher.

National League vs. American League: Recommendation AL -135

No question the stars will be out tonight in Kansas City, while Kaufmann Stadium will hold the 2012 MLB All-Star game. The National League has turned the tables the last two years beating the American League. Before the 2010 All-Star game the last mid-summer classic won by the National League was amazingly way back in 1996!

For certain, we know the American League has controlled Interleague play as well. This season the American League once again flexed their muscle beating the National League 141-111.

As mentioned this year’s game will feature as many up and coming and legitimate superstars as any game in recent memory. For the National League, Matt Cain is expected to start the contest, while the American League will combat with Justin Verlander. Of course with limited innings the starting pitching match-up is rather meaningless in the handicap compared to a regular season contest.

In the end we’ll look for the American League to regain their footing and win this game with the home field edge and deeper roster. Overall you’ll find little weakness within Read more

Sunday MLB Betting Free Play: Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Jurrjens) at Philadelphia (Worley) -125 O/U 9
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Atlanta’s a confident team right now having won three straight and four of five with all four wins being by three or more runs. The offense has scored 29 runs in their last five games and the starting staff has rattled off four straight quality wins. The surge has seen them now get to within 0.5 game of the lead in the NL Wild Card race. Conversely, Philadelphia is an absolute mess after 86 games at 37-49, 14 games behind division leading Washington. Local media, the fan base and the team are all extremely frustrated and the Phils are an inch away from being a trade deadline seller. All that being said, Philadelphia looks to be in a good spot today against the Braves and RH starter Jair Jurrjens. While Jurrjens numbers in his three starts since coming off the DL look real good (2-0 / 1.20 WHIP / 1.47 ERA), there are numbers inside the overall façade that have us looking to fade him Read more

MLB Handicapping: Minnesota uses 11th different starting pitcher

07.07.2012     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Deduno) at Texas (Holland) -180 O/U 10.5

Minnesota will use its 11th different starting pitcher after calling up right-hander Sam Deduno from Triple-A Rochester. Deduno is 29 years old and has his Minor League progress delayed by Tommy John. He's shown the ability to miss bats with 46 strikeouts in 42 innings this season. Add in only 27 hits allowed and on paper it looks like Deduno has decent stuff though some concern with a 4.50 BB/9 ratio.

MLB Gambling Free Pick: Baltimore Orioles at Los Angeles Angels

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re going to look under the total here which is currently posted at 8.5. Despite the seven run outburst by Baltimore against slumping Angels RH Garrett Richards, have to figure they’ll return to their extended poor offensive production tonight. Prior to last night, the O’s had posted a .200/.287/.592 line in the last 18 contests with game batting averages of .233 or below in 15 of those.

With red-hot LA lefty C.J. Wilson on the hill (seven quality starts in his last eight outings), don’t expect Baltimore to generate much with the bats. Wilson’s 1.07 WHIP, 1.35 ERA and 1 HR allowed over this current 53 1/3 inning stretch combined with his mastery of this group of Orioles sticks (only 2 combined RBI in 52 at bats against him) adds up to a strong performance tonight.

Taking the hill for the Orioles is 28 year old, righty Miguel Gonzalez who is from nearby San Fernando and will be making a homecoming in front of friends and family. Look for Gonzalez to be pumped up for this spot start which Manager Buck Showalter will be watching closely to see what he has. Showalter has given a pitch limit of 100 so Gonzalez has an opportunity Read more

MLB Handicapping: Boston thin on infielders with Pedroia headed to DL

07.06.2012     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston had already been carting out a bunch of B-listers in the outfield due to injuries. With Dustin Pedroia headed to the DL with a thumb injury, now it's the infield turn to do its best Triple-A impression. And not only is Pedroia out but Will Middlebrooks has missed the last three games with a hamstring injury. Don't forget they recently traded third basemen Kevin Youlikis to the White Sox. Boston has inched back to 5.5 games out of first place in the American League East before dropping four of five including three straight in Oakland.

Trailing the Washington Nationals by a whopping 13 games in the National League East, the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to welcome back Ryan Howard to the lineup tonight against Atlanta. The Phillies rank sixth in home runs (83) and eighth in slugging (.407) in the National League.

MLB Gambling Free Play: Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamonbacks

07.06.2012     06:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Dodgers (Kershaw) -115 at Arizona (Collmenter) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Los Angeles

Oddsmakers and the betting markets have spent the better part of the last month downgrading the Los Angeles Dodgers because of their much publicized offensive drought. The worst of it saw LA score 15 runs in 12 games en route to a 1-11 stretch. But since the calendar flipped to July, we've seen a tad more offense with 21 runs their last five games (4-1). Despite all that has happened, and with San Francisco currently struggling on the East Coast, the Dodgers head into today with a 1.5 game lead in the National League West. They've have a chance to extend that lead with ace Clayton Kershaw slated to take the hill. Kershaw's seasonal numbers are rock solid (2.65 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) and he not only has a strong history against Arizona (1.92 ERA in 11 starts) but a proven track record at Chase Field (2.59 ERA, 5 starts). To see him at the cheap of a price you'd think he was matched up against the 2011 version Read more
