Will try to update these at least once a week for the time being. May do that more often if trade news or other stories develop. As I worked through the numbers, a few teams seemed to be getting a little more respect at home than on the road…meaning slightly more than home court advantage by itself already suggests. So, I’ll have a few teams with different numbers for road and home.

86: Oklahoma City, Miami

85: San Antonio, LA Clippers

82: New York, Memphis, Denver (home)

81: LA Lakers (home), Denver (road), San Antonio when Duncan’s out

80: Houston, Brooklyn, Indiana, Golden State (home), Utah (home), LA Lakers (road)

79: Portland, Chicago, Atlanta, Golden State (road), Utah (road)

78: Milwaukee, Dallas, Boston without Rondo (a guess for now)

77: New Orleans, Washington

76: Philadelphia, Detroit, Toronto

75: Orlando

74: Phoenix, Minnesota

73: Sacramento

Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers' Super Bowl XLVII Gambling Update

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Editor’s Note: Join Teddy at the LVH Showroom at 5 pm PT on Saturday, February 2nd for the ‘red carpet’ premiere of the new sportsbetting documentary movie ‘Life on the Line’.  It’s free to attend, and the event will last about an hour.

It’s no secret where the early money has come on the Super Bowl.  At the opening number, San Francisco was as high as a 5.5-point favorite offshore, with mostly -5’s here in Las Vegas.  But we’ve seen steady Baltimore money pour in since that time, driving the line down to the -3.5 or -4 range at every sportsbook in town; numbers that are currently attracting two way action.  I expect the 49ers to be in that same pointspread range (-3.5 or -4) between now and kickoff.

The early sharp money has also come in support of the Under.  One prominent offshore book opened the total at 52.5, and here in Vegas we saw several books open with a total of 50.  Through the first week of Super Bowl betting, the Under has been a popular wiseguy choice.  The prevailing current offshore number is 47.5; here in Vegas we’re looking at mostly Read more

Super Bowl XLVII Gambling: Kaepernick prop bets a big hit for Vegas sportsbooks

01.25.2013     11:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to William Hill's Jimmy Vaccaro, the handle for Colin Kaepernick prop bets is reaching epic proportions. We'll go out on a limb and say that a vast majority of those wagers weren't correlated to the rookie quarterback underperforming.

"We put 10 props on him last week and generated more than $100,000 in bets," Vaccaro said. "To put that in perspective, a good prop is when you can draw $2,500 to $5,000 in bets."

"But I've never seen interest on prop bets like I've seen with Kaepernick," Vaccaro said. "We think we can do $300,000 in Kaepernick prop bets alone and that's a conservative estimate. No one has ever come close to that number."

Baltimore +3.5 vs. San Francisco O/U 47.5

Quick update on the Super Bowl XLVII betting markets. Thus far a majority of the side action has come in on the Baltimore Ravens. We've seen the line tick down from +5 to its current number of +3.5. Action on the under has the total down from an opener of 49 (CRIS) to 47.5. Las Vegas has a few shops (Wynn, William Hill) dealing -4 while a majority of totals sit at 48. Not wanting to be left out, DOJ decides to jump on the anti-sports betting bandwagon

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Heading into this week, our power ratings showed sports leagues to be a -2.5 (-120) favorite over New Jersey in the battle for the legalization of sports betting. We were forced to adjust our number to -4 when it was announced that the Department of Justice was upgraded to probable.

“I was told they weren’t going to intervene. Don’t know if my intel was wrong or they got a change of heart for some reason,’’ Lesniak said. “Regardless, bring it on. I’m still expecting our casinos and racetracks to be able to take bets on the Final Four. They will be packed with people, just like Las Vegas.’’’

Super Bowl XLVII betting handle could break all-time record

01.22.2013     12:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Super Bowl XLVII between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens is expected to produce near-record betting numbers for Nevada sportsbooks. The highest handle ($94.5 million) came in Super Bowl XL; Pittsburgh defeated Seattle 21-10.

"It's an intriguing match up because the coaches are brothers," says Jay Kornegay, vice president of Las Vegas' Superbook, the world's largest race and sports betting book. "The Ravens, the hottest team, may not have a large fan base, but they certainly add an intriguing element. There's the fact Ray Lewis is retiring. It's one of the better teams versus the hottest team."

A perfect match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

I write about sports every week. Next week in this space, I’ll be writing about Super Bowl props. Two weeks from now, it’ll be all about college basketball through the end of March Madness. But not today. Today, I’m going to write about movies. Nobody needs two full weeks of Super Bowl hype!

There are no great sports betting movies –none. Hollywood has produced a handful of great gambling movies – The Sting, Casino, Rounders, The Hustler and Croupier certainly stand out. But when it comes to anything resembling realism in a sports betting movie, it doesn’t exist. Every bettor in a Hollywood sports betting movie is a compulsive addict; every bookmaker is evil and they always win.

There are no exceptions in this tried and true Hollywood formula. If Richard Dreyfuss isn’t uncontrollably gambling on every race in ‘Let it Ride’, then Matthew McConaughey is forcing his clients into bankruptcy and letting his entire career path depend on a coin-flip in ‘Two for the Money’. Even Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vince Vaughn couldn’t save last year’s ‘Lay the Favorite’; just Read more
