Atlanta Falcons
Since blowing out Tampa Bay on national TV in Week 3, the Atlanta Falcons have looked nothing short of awful.  A team that made it to the NFC Championship Game two years ago is now entrenched in a four game skid; picking up right where they left off last year when they went 4-12 and ranked among the most disappointing teams in football.

All four losses during this SU and ATS skid have come by double digit margins.  The Falcons certainly aren’t going to win many defensive struggles – their stop unit has allowed 24+ six times in seven ballgames this year, a mediocre defense on a good day.  But many pundits thought the Falcons would be good enough to trade points with most of their foes.  That simply hasn’t been the case, in large part, due to cluster injuries on the offensive line, with backup center Peter Konz the latest to go down.

Matt Ryan was sacked five times and hit nine times in Atlanta’s loss to Baltimore on Sunday, while throwing for a season low in yards. "When you go out there and get beat soundly, I think everybody knows we've got to play better across the board. Read more

What's worse than losing a bet on a pick six? Reading about Floyd Mayweather winning a bet on a pick six, that's what.

"Floyd didn't watch the game here," Simbal said, "but he certainly showed up shortly thereafter to cash."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL has longstanding relationship with gambling Part 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I wrote about the NFL’s origins: a league designed by gamblers for gamblers.  Heck, the games are still played at 1 pm on Sundays here in 2014, just as they were 80 years ago, because the old Blue Laws forced horse tracks to close on Sundays and the league’s original owners wanted to offer bettors a place to gamble after church every week.

This week’ I’ll be leaving the early days behind, picking up the story with the infamous 1958 Championship Game between the Colts and Giants – the game that really put the NFL on the map when it comes to national television exposure (and ratings).

The 1958 championship between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants has been called the "Greatest Game in NFL History."  The overtime thriller was nationally televised, and drew enormous ratings with forty million Americans tuning in, spurring the league’s incredible growth over the next decade.

MGM wants to offer on-site sports betting tablets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
MGM Resorts are looking into offering interactive betting tablets for patrons of their sportsbooks. It needs to approved by the Nevada Gaming Commission but the target date is the start of the 2015 football season.

“As we thought about that and started trying to grab them by the hair and yank them into the casino, we thought we’d go where they’re at. And where they’re at is mobile phones and sports books, lounges, nightclubs,” Mikulich said. “We thought we’d put some of these devices in those areas to try and engage with them and see what they actually like to do.”

Publicly, the NFL is among the staunchest opponents to legalized gambling in the United States.  Heck, the league famously refused an advertisement from the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Bureau for the Super Bowl, in an effort to appear like they are really anti-gaming.

Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act attached to the Port Security Bill in October 2006.  The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that it’s enormously popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable.  The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers.  From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deals that pumps nearly six billions dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Over/Under Trends

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I wrote about the early ATS streakers to open the NFL season; teams that were red hot or ice cold against the spread coming out of the gate.  This week, I’ll focus on teams that have shown a strong totals bias through the first four weeks of the campaign.  Who’s trending Over?  Who’s trending Under?  And, most importantly, why are these teams trending the way they are?  Are the markets close to catching up?  Read on to find out!

One of the more incongruous September NFL trends is that of the Jacksonville Jaguars going 4-0 to the Over.  The Jags are one of only two teams (Oakland is the other) averaging fewer than 15 points per game this year.  And that’s not likely to change dramatically.  Jacksonville’s level of skill position talent is quite possibly the weakest in the NFL.  Toby Gerhart is averaging 2.6 yards per carry; Denard Robinson 3.3.  In four games, their longest run from scrimmage is 13 yards (not including a single Blake Bortles 20 yard scramble).

The Jaguars receiving corps doesn’t keep opposing defensive coordinators up at night.  Allen Hurns, Read more
