Wynn Casino severs ties with Japanese shareholder

02.20.2012     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
Las Vegas' Wynn Casino just cut ties with its biggest shareholder, Japanese billionaire Kazuo Okada. Okada reportedly made improper payments to foreign gaming regulators which prompted Wynn to buy out his shares worth an estimated $1.9 billion.

"Freeh’s investigators uncovered and documented more than three dozen instances over a three-year period in which Mr. Okada and his associates engaged in improper activities for their own benefit in apparent violation of U.S. anti-corruption laws and gross disregard for the company’s Code of Conduct. These troubling discoveries include cash payments and gifts totaling approximately $110,000 to foreign gaming regulators,” Wynn’s statement on Sunday said.

NCAA Basketball Gambling Preview: New Mexico in revenge spot against UNLV

UNLV at New Mexico -4.5 O/U 141

New Mexico looking for its second straight revenge victory after taking down San Diego State by 10 on the road Wednesday. Now they'll try to do it in The Pit against UNLV who won the first meeting in Las Vegas, 80-63. Adding to it is that the Rebels have won two straight in The Pit and four of the last five meetings.

Note that UNLV has not been a great road team with three wins coming in overtime against far lesser competition and losses at Wichita, Wisconsin, San Diego State, Wyoming and most recently, TCU.

“We’ve been fortunate in five years that we’ve had a lot of games with big-time atmosphere,” UNM coach Steve Alford said. “What gets added on to this is we’ve got CBS in here. We’ve got a national TV situation that we don’t always get. To have this, will Read more

Las Vegas Hotel struggles during the post-Hilton era

02.17.2012     11:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Las Vegas Sun on the former Hilton Hotel and Casino – now named the LVH (Las Vegas Hotel and Casino). Things aren’t looking too good these days both literally and figuratively.  The name change has also caused issues with its searchability on Google.

"The termination of the Hilton License Agreement, coupled with the fact that the property did not have the financial resources to purchase replacement exterior signage or to initiate a new brand advertising campaign to attract leisure travelers, has had a dramatic negative impact on hotel occupancy,'' his report said. ''Dramatically lower occupancy levels have, in turn, had a negative impact on other revenue departments (i.e. gaming, food and beverage and retail).''

Johnson also reported that the 2,950-room hotel-casino on Paradise Road needs $700,000 for exterior signage to replace the Hilton signs, Read more

Las Vegas' Heart Attack Grill lives up to its name

UPDATE

Back in November, we blogged about the opening of Las Vegas' Heart Attack Grill, which in a nut shell is a place people go to shorten their lives by a few days. Shocking that it took this long, but on Saturday, The HAG actually had a patron suffer a heart attack. Because the gentlemen reportedly survived the incident, feel free to let out a chuckle. But seriously, if you are going to eat there, make it a once a year event, and be sure to jog home afterwards. Actually, that may be a bad idea. Drive home, rest, let your blood pressure return to normal, and THEN go on a jog.

Oddsmakers drop New York Knicks' odds to win the NBA Championship

02.15.2012     02:12 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The betting public just loves a good story, especially one with the potential to have a very profitable outcome. The New York Knicks have seen their NBA title odds drop from 50-1 to 25-1 during the recent wave of Linsanity. The Knicks are in eight place of the Eastern Conference yet sport the eighth-best odds to win it all.

“They’ve been supported in the last week pretty heavily so the liability adds up,” Jeff Sherman, the LVH assistant sports book manager, said in a telephone interview. “Between the Lin phenomenon, the Knicks on a winning streak, bettering their position and the money we’ve seen coming across the window, it’s a combination that causes them to go down.”

“Now the question is how is Lin and Carmelo and Stoudemire going to mix together,” Avello said by phone from his Las Vegas office. “What’s going to happen when we get all three of them? Is Lin going to get less shots, are they going to go back to the way the Knicks had been playing?

Article on New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and his large stake in Caesars Entertainment...and relationship with casino rival Steve Wynn.

“It’s like putting your money on red and black (at the roulette table),” University of Nevada at Las Vegas gambling expert David Schwartz said. “Unless ‘0’ or ‘00’ come up, you’re going to win.”

Caesars’ stock had a great opening day yesterday.

Sold to investors for $9 a share, the stock shot up 71 percent to close at $15.39 on the Nasdaq.

Las Vegas' South Point Casino does reality TV show on Travel Channel

02.08.2012     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Travel Channel will premier its new reality show, Vegas Stripped, tonight at 10 pm PT. The show will cover the inner-workings of Las Vegas' South Point Casino.

“It’s an inside look at what it takes to run a casino,” said Tom Mikovits, South Point director of marketing. “You’re going to see what happens in the butcher shop or on the loading dock, lots of stuff people don’t normally see.”

“We were comfortable being a locals’ casino, but having a brand like southpointpoker.com, that’s something we want to get out nationally,” he said. “It lets people know who we are and that we can play with the big players in Vegas, while still keeping that down home feeling.”

Nevada sportsbooks predicting small profit from Super Bowl XLVI

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Late money on the New England Patriots and a low scoring affair has Nevada sportsbooks calling for a small profit from Super Bowl XLVI.

“The late rush was on the Patriots, which bailed us out,” said Jimmy Vaccaro, director of sports operations at Lucky’s Race & Sports Book in Las Vegas. “The general public was in love with this Giants team and you found out a reason why they’ve been riding them for the past eight weeks.”

“Everything together made us a fair winner for the day,” Vaccaro said in a telephone interview. “It wasn’t as bad as it was three days ago. The Patriot money did show and the line went back to three in most casinos, telling you there was plenty of Patriots money.”
