Las Vegas sportsbooks want betting on the Olympics

01.09.2015     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas sportsbooks are pushing to make betting on the Olympics legal. For whatever reason, the Gaming Control Board wouldn't allow it whereas offshore sportsbooks like Pinnacle offer an endless array of both summer and winter Olympic betting options. The next Olympic games is scheduled for Rio de Janeiro in the summer of 2016.

“It’s a different world out there,” said South Point bookmaker Jimmy Vaccaro. “Anything that we add that draws any attention or brings anybody in is a huge plus … They won’t be knocking down the doors to make bets on this, but it’s just one more thing that we think we should be able to do.”

UPDATE

Checking in on the current pointspreads for this weekend's NFL Divisional Playoff games. As of Friday morning, all four underdogs have seen play the betting markets based on CRIS's openers.

Baltimore opened +7 and after early money on New England the Patriots are now -7 even money.

Seattle opened -11.5 but has settled -10.5 offshore and -11 in Las Vegas.

Green Bay opened -6.5 and was -6 for much of the week before dropping to -5.5 yesterday. Still plenty of +6's for those interested in the Cowboys.

Denver opened -7.5 even money but is now -7 (-105) across the board.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Still a few days out from college football's title game between Ohio State and Oregon. In reaction to both semifinal matchups going over the total, we've seen more upward pressure with the current number at 75/75.5 after opening 72.5 at Pinnacle and 74 at CRIS. And after sitting on the Ducks -7 for a few days we've seen a slow but steady flow of Buckeyes money with the line down to -6 offshore and -6.5 in Las Vegas. Sportsmemo handicapper Rob Veno has his power rating set at -7.5.

College Basketball Betting: UNLV seeks revenge vs. rival Nevada

01.07.2015     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rivalry game tonight in Las Vegas with UNLV playing host to Nevada. Despite the Rebels owning a huge edge historically, the Wolf Pack won both regular season meetings last year.

"It's a huge game on our schedule because it's the next conference game," he said — the Wolf Pack has taken a different approach. Carter and his players said there's a little extra on the line given the rivalry.

"It means a lot," said point guard Marqueze Coleman, who is coming off a career-high 18 points in Nevada's last game. "It's a huge rivalry, and it's going to continue. We got two last year, and I know they're going to be heated and want to get us back. We need to go into Thomas & Mack ready to play."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: College Football Bowl Game Bad Beats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Without a college football playoff this year, we probably would have seen the two losers of the semi-final games (Florida State and Alabama) face off for the national title, instead of the Oregon-Ohio State matchup that we are actually going to see next Monday.  But while the talking heads on TV fixate on the upcoming marquee matchup, there is room for the savvy ‘capper to look back on what just happened over the past three weeks of bowl action in an effort to draw lessons that will help in the future.

Throughout the last few weeks, there were some bad beats that rivaled the toughest beats that we’ve seen in college football all year.  Three stand out in particular; Houston’s late rally to beat Pitt, Michigan State’s late rally to beat Baylor and Central Michigan’s late rally to cover against Western Kentucky.

Of the three, the Michigan State comeback in the Cotton Bowl was the most likely to occur, despite the Spartans clear deficiencies in the ballgame.  Mark Dantonio’s squad allowed 603 passing yards, but they got the stops they needed during crunch time.  Baylor missed a 46 yard field goal at the Read more

College Football Gambling: Oregon Ducks open -7 vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Oregon Ducks opened as a 7-point favorite over Ohio State for next week's college football championship in Dallas. That's where they currently stand both offshore and in Las Vegas with the exception of Pinnacle which has the Ducks -6.5 (-115). The total has seen upward pressure from 72 to as high as 74.5. This after both semifinal contests went flying over the total. Sportsmemo handicapper Rob Veno's Power Ratings show Oregon to be -7.5. Sagarin meanwhile has the game as a virtual pick 'em with Ohio State 0.43 ahead of Oregon.

College Basketball Gambling: Bettors jump on Kentucky's potentially perfect season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We knew this one was coming. Various Las Vegas sportsbooks have been offering a prop bet on whether or not Kentucky will run the table. William Hill chucked up a 50-1 during the summer -- which was in our opinion sorta insulting given the “true” odds of the feat. Fast forward five months and that's looking like the one awesome wager! The current adjusted price is +450. We ask the question, doesn't Calipari WANT to lose a game? Isn't that the type of thing that can be used to benefit the bigger picture? In theory, yes, but there’s also that whole ego thing to contend with.

"It's pretty good six figures, too," William Hill director of trading Nick Bogdanovich said of the liability on the popular prop bet. "They keep betting it."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Top Super Bowl contenders all have flaws

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re down to a dirty dozen in the NFL, as 20 of the 32 teams saw their seasons come to a close at the conclusion of another wild and wacky Week 17.  In my Wiseguy Reports over the past two weeks, I’ve been poking holes in the fringe contenders in both conferences.  This week, I’m going to put the four favorites under the microscope.  Guess what – all four are potentially vulnerable to an upset.

Let me start with the defending champs, the Seattle Seahawks.  When Pete Carroll built up his program at USC, the Trojans weren’t a one-and-done type squad for titles -- they were in the mix year after year under his tutelage.  They played fast, they played loose – never tense or uptight -- and they consistently played their very best football down the stretch.

Seattle did just that down the stretch last year.  And they’ve certainly done that this year; going 6-0 SU and ATS since their loss at Kansas City back in Week 11.  But before we anoint the Seahawks as the first repeat Super Bowl champs since the Patriots did it following the 2004 campaign, we’ve got to put this team under the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: AFC Playoff Contenders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Week 16 of the NFL season is in the books and four teams have emerged as clear co-favorites to win the Super Bowl.  Green Bay and Seattle are at the top of the power ratings spectrum in the NFC while Denver and New England look poised for a rematch from last year in the AFC Championship Game.

Last week in this space, I poked holes in the NFC contenders, explaining why every other live team in the playoff race had at least one fundamental flaw primed to doom their chances in January.  This week, I’m going to point the magnifying glass towards the seven fringe contenders in the AFC.  Can any of them knock off the Patriots in Foxboro or the Broncos in Denver when January rolls around?  Read on to find out.

The Houston Texans remain one of five teams still fighting for the final two playoff spots in the AFC after knocking off the Ravens on Sunday.  But if the Texans do manage to sneak into the postseason with a Wild Card berth, I’m not expecting them to do any damage.

Houston’s defense ranks among the league’s elite, as we clearly saw once again this past weekend.  But the Texans average Read more

College Basketball Betting News and Notes 12-19-2014

Ohio State vs. North Carolina (Chicago)
Tar Heels have plenty of issues but the huge advantage in this one is that they've played five quality top 25 caliber teams. Ohio State meanwhile caught Marquette early and battled back but was for the most part manhandled by Louisville. They've been stationed in Columbus playing nothing but glorified practices. Good for confidence, bad for asking them to flip the switch away from home against comparable competition.

Northern Iowa vs. Iowa (Des Moines)
Prior to allowing 90 to rival Iowa State, I've been impressed with Iowa's defense. The offense though has struggled vs. quality foes and Northern Iowa guards about as good as anyone in the country outside of top-tier bullies like Kentucky and Louisville. Would expect Iowa's best effort with over a week to prep after aforementioned blowout loss to Cyclones. Expect to see Hawkeyes in the -2/-2.5 range.

Oklahoma vs. Washington (Las Vegas)
Huskies are undefeated and while the schedule comes up light, this looks to be one of Romar's most complete teams. He's had more talent but they've bought in to guarding which Read more
