MLB Betting News: The most frustrating starting pitchers in baseball

08.24.2012     05:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's nearly September so the last thing most of you want to read is some article on pitching sabermetrics. But here's one from Beyond the Box Score that is worth a read. It talks about starting pitchers who experience a lot of highs and lows – meaning, they can have a dominant start just as easy as one in which they get pounded. There are some familiar faces on the list including Gavin Floyd, Ervin Santana and of course Max Scherzer. In essence it is a list of starting pitchers who drive bettors crazy.

MLB Handicapping: Greinke, Sanchez and Dempster struggle in move to AL

08.22.2012     06:16 AM     Printer Friendly
The transition from the National to American League hasn’t been easy for Zach Greinke, Annibal Sanchez and Ryan Dempster (Dempster did throw well last time out vs. Baltimore). Still, the margin for error will continue to be far less compared to their days in the NL. Note that despite Sanchez's troubles, he's as high as a -190 favorite vs. Toronto this evening.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Cleveland Indians at Seattle Mariners

Cleveland (Hernandez) +195 at Seattle (Hernandez) O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Cleveland

Felix Hernandez's perfect game last week was a thing of beauty – and fitting considering how dominant he had been throwing of late (1.82 ERA previous 9 starts). But now it is time to get back to business, and I'm not so sure we can expect a fully focused "King" considering all of the post-game hoopla (read this from the Seattle Times). Tonight he'll face a Cleveland team that has already seen him twice. In the first meeting, Hernandez cruised through eight scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts. The second time around though, the Tribe got to him for six earned runs and 10 hits in 3.2 innings. Cleveland is not a consistent team when it comes to hitting, but with virtually nothing but lefties we know there is always that chance they can explode against a righty Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Germano) at Milwaukee (Rogers) -155 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

The Brewers lineup is hot right now.  Don’t be fooled by yesterday’s shutout loss, when both Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart got the day off to rest.  Even against one of the hottest pitchers in the majors, Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels, the Brewers enjoyed some offensive success on Saturday.  Prior to that, Milwaukee had scored five runs or more in each of their last seven ballgames, flying Over the total six times during that span.

Chicago, too, has been hitting the ball well of late, averaging five runs per game in their last two series against the Reds and Astros.  No surprise, then, that we’ve seen the Cubs go 7-0 to the Over during the course of the last week.

Neither starter here is trustworthy.  Chicago’s Justin Germano has only one quality start in four tries with the team, while Rogers is still looking for his first big league Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Buchholz) at Baltimore (Tillman) +120 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Baltimore

My clients and I cashed a right side winner betting on the Orioles against the Red Sox on Tuesday.  We stepped it up a notch last night, hitting our 20* Big Ticket using the same formula.  And while today’s pitching matchup isn’t nearly as favorable for the Orioles, betting (and beating) baseball is most assuredly more than just isolating favorable pitching matchups!  Given the current form of these two squads, Baltimore has no business as a home underdog despite the starting pitching edge for Boston.

Even if Boston has the starting pitching edge, the Orioles have a major edge when it comes to their bullpen and when it comes to finding ways to scratch out wins in coin-flip type ballgames.  The O’s are 22-6 in one run games this year; while going 12-2 in games decided in extra innings.  The Red Sox are just 2-6 in extra inning affairs and Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Chicago White Sox at Toronto Blue Jays

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago WS (Floyd) -105 at Toronto (Romero) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Chicago

It's not hard to make a case for betting against Blue Jays starter Ricky Romero these days.  Romero has lost each of his last eight decisions, with a 7.26 ERA since his last win, at Miami back in June. Romero has repeatedly struggled with his control, ranked #4 in all of baseball with 77 walks so far this season.  And the White Sox hit lefties hard, scoring more runs per game against southpaws than they do against righties.

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against the Blue Jays either.  Toronto has been riddled with injuries, slumping for weeks.  Jose Bautista, Brett Lawrie, Adam Lind and JP Arencibia are all on the DL right now, and Colby Rasmus has been sidelined with a groin injury.  They’ve lost 12 of their last 16 games thanks to an offense that can’t hit, scoring three runs or less 12 times in that 16 game span.

And it’s not hard Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Philadelphia Phillies at Miami Marlins

Submitted by ER Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Kendrick) at Miami (Johnson) -140 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Miami

Two of the most disappointing teams in all of baseball will continue their series tonight as the Phillies play the Marlins in Miami tonight. The Phillies will send part-time starter Kyle Kendrick to the hill. There’s a major reason why Kendrick is still a bobbling starter and that’s simply because he’s not very good. The Phillies are 4-11 when Kendrick gets the call in 2012, while he totes a 4.86 ERA. There’s nothing fluky about his troubling ERA, and you could even argue it should be worse with just a 68-38 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 96.1 innings of work. Making matters worse is the right-hander just isn’t getting the groundballs he’s featured at times over the course of his career. Meanwhile, the Marlins will have ace Josh Johnson toeing the rubber. The big right-hander has fought to find his vintage form all season long after a shoulder injury in 2011. Of late, Read more
