Missouri Valley Free Betting Pick: Bradley Braves at Missouri State Bears

02.12.2012     08:59 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Bradley at Missouri State -14 O/U 132
Recommendation: Under

Shooting 40% from the field has become a real chore for Bradley the past half dozen games as they’ve achieved the feat barely only twice. The Braves have been a crooked shooting team all season averaging just 41.5% from the floor but now, the second time around in Missouri Valley Conference play, shots are falling at an even smaller rate. The stingy defense of Missouri State which is only allowing 40.0% from the floor this season isn’t the ideal unit for a Bradley outburst. Earlier this season in their 51-48 victory, Missouri State held Bradley to 37% shooting and their methodical style slowed the Braves to a 59 possession crawl. The Bears were even worse from the field hitting just 35% and scoring has been troublesome for them as well as they’ve failed to reach 70 points in seven consecutive games. Abundance of late game free throws are not likely in a game lined in this Read more

College Basketball Gambling Pick: Rider Broncos at Canisius Golden Griffins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rider -5.5 at Canisius O/U 148.5
Recommendation: Rider

The wheels haven’t just come off for Canisius the past three weeks, they’ve exploded. Can’t see the Golden Griffins rising up from underneath the rubble of this current 0-7 SU and 1-6 ATS streak anytime soon. Since January 15th, Canisius has not come with 11 points of an opponent including this Rider team which destroyed them 89-65 a little over two weeks ago. The 81.4 points per game allowed by Canisius during this span has become very problematic and won’t serve them well at all tonight versus a Rider offense that loves to push pace and has averaged 76.6 ppg since the turn of the calendar year. Head coach Tommy Dempsey’s bunch has also turned in a solid 7-3-1 ATS run over that 11-game stretch. In the earlier meeting, Canisius was held to 34.9% from the field and were crushed on the boards 50-28. That game began a defensive surge by the Broncs who have held five straight teams to 43% shooting or less. Home floor has meant next to nothing for Canisius which is 2-7 ATS in Buffalo and I don’t expect it to mean anything in this contest either.   Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Prop Bet Pick: Will each team have the lead in the first half?

Super Bowl XLVI Prop Bet
Will each team have the lead in the first half?
Recommendation: Yes +105 (Greek)

In what figures to be a back and forth contest from the outset, the plus end of this prop bet is especially attractive. There’s a strong possibility that this game could see each of these teams have the lead in the first two series. It’s interesting to note that six of the eight Patriots away games this season have seen each team have a lead in the first half. That’s quite a contrast from their 10 home games in which only once did both teams have the first half lead. The drastic difference in their home-road performances adds a very positive angle to this play. Super Bowls the last six years have seen this prop have streaky results going 3-0 from 2006-08 and 0-3 from 2009-11. For this prop play, it’s helpful to have a first quarter field goal by one side so the team scores don’t run parallel and the Patriots have had a first quarter field goal in eight of their last 10. Since these offenses are more than capable of responding to a score, this game should see each team have the lead at some point in the first Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Prop Bet Pick: Kenny Phillips OVER 5 Tackles+Assists

Super Bowl XLVI Prop Bet
NY Giants safety Kenny Phillips Tackles+Assists
Recommendation: Over 5 -135 (Greek)

Willing to play New York Giants strong safety Kenny Phillips at this number against the Patriots offense which is tailor made for tackles at this position. The short to intermediate portions of the field play prominent roles in New England’s tight end heavy scheme which should make Phillips very active. In the first contest between these teams, he recorded six tackles and two assists which is an indicator of how involved the strong safety position is against New England. In the AFC Championship game a couple weeks ago, Baltimore Ravens strong safety Bernard Pollard led his team with seven tackles and added five assists. New England’s no huddle offense generated 73 total plays back in Week 9 when these teams met and their average of 65.6 gives Phillips ample opportunities to exceed this number.

College Basketball Free Play: Memphis Tigers at Southern Miss Golden Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Memphis at Southern Miss -2.5 O/U 133.5
Recommendation: Under

With the conference lead at stake combined with Southern Mississippi’s determination for revenge against Memphis, have to believe this will be a tightly contested affair. Recent history, including this season’s 60-58 Tigers win, has shown these teams to play hard fought, defensive battles as three of the last four have stayed under the total. Additional technical trends also point in that direction as Memphis has gone under in this price range five of its last six C-USA road games and Southern Miss is 64% under the total at home (16 of 25) the last three years. Fundamentally, each team is strong defensively permitting only 58.9 (Memphis) and 63.6 (Southern Mississippi) points per game in league play. Rebounding is a solid asset for each team so can’t expect a lot of second chances here. Expect a moderate tempo contest with contested shots for the entire 40 minutes as these teams keep this one under the total.

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling: All-time Super Bowl results in dome stadiums

01.26.2012     02:06 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There have been 14 Super Bowls played in indoor dome stadiums (note that in all three instances where a retractable dome was involved, it was closed for the game). In those 14 contests (see chart below), the Louisiana Superdome has played host six times. Not surprisingly, with the advent of retractable domes, we’ve had six indoor Super Bowls in the last 12 years with each at a different venue. The perfect conditions and faster surfaces would seemingly help offenses and push more totals overs the number but the results haven’t shown that to be the overwhelming case. Here are some side and total records that have been compiled in dome stadium Super Bowls which could be considered when making game or prop bets this year:

- The second half has been higher scoring than the first half in 12 of the 14 games

- The second half has averaged 26.4 points and produced 24 or more nine times

- The first quarter has produced 3 points or less in five of the last six dome Super Bowls

- The fourth quarter has erupted for 17 or more points in that same six game stretch

- The closing total has been off of the final result by 11 or more points Read more
