College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Washington Huskies

USC at Washington
Rob Veno's Recommendation:
USC
Saturday, 4 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
USC -13.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: USC -12 O/U 55
Rob Veno's Power Rating: USC -12.5

Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian taking on USC is always an interesting sidebar. His Huskies upset USC in his first two seasons as double-digit underdogs but last year in that same role, they were clobbered 40-17. UW was outgained in total yardage 426-244 and more importantly they were physically dominated at the point of attack being outrushed 252-46. Even with now graduated star running back Chris Polk, the Huskies could not get anything going on the ground. This season’s ground attack has not proven to be anywhere near the level of last year’s averaging just 3.7 ypc and the same can be said for the passing game which is currently averaging 72 yards less per game than it did in 2011. College Football Gambling: Nevada QB Fajardo remains questionable

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nevada at UNLV

Nevada's do-everything quarterback Cody Fajardo is questionable for Saturday's game against rival UNLV. If unable to play, the Wolf Pack will start Devin Combs who filled in during last week's overtime win over Wyoming. Combs finished 11-of-19 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Nevada has won seven straight in the series by margins of 37, 18, 35, 20, 7, 28 and 8. They covered six of those seven games. Oddsmakers have yet to put a line on Saturday's game.

“It’s the right side of his lower back into his lower hip," Ault said. "He’s getting treatment today and tomorrow, but it’s a severe muscle spasms. Those aren’t anything to sneeze at. It will be a day-to-day thing, but today and tomorrow we’ll have him stay off of it.”

College Football Handicapping: Auburn wants to go with run-heavy offense

10.10.2012     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Auburn at Mississippi -6 O/U 49.5

Having scored only 27 points in three SEC games, Auburn appears to be waving the white flag offensively. Offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler said the team is working on creating a run-first identity. The Tigers have already been fairly run heavy (59%) but unfortunately haven't had much success (3.62 ypc). Perhaps this weekend they'll break out. Ole Miss allowed 640 yards on the ground to Texas and Texas A&M.

"We've tried a lot of different things. We've got to make sure we definitely narrow down to exactly who we are – and who we are is this: We're going to run the football. We want to be a play-action team that has ability to take shots down the field," he says in this video.

College Football Betting Update: Junior QB Vaz gets start for Oregon State

UPDATE

Oregon State at- BYU -6 O/U 38

Oregon State will start junior quarterback Cody Vaz this weekend at BYU. Vaz has not played since 2010 though head coach Mike Riley gave him a vote of confidence (of course he did) and said the offense will not change. Prior to taking the game off the board, Pinnacle had BYU has a 2.5-point favorite. The Cougars are now -6.

“I’ve got a lot of faith in Cody,” Riley said. “I’ve always thought he was a good quarterback. The only unfortunate part is I haven’t played him enough. I think he’s a good player. We don’t have to change or do anything different.”

Middle Tennessee State -3 at Florida International O/U 57

A few reports indicate that Florida International could get back starting quarterback Jake Medlock for Saturday's game against Middle Tennessee. Sports Options has Medloock’s status as “doubtful” but one FIU blog said that he practiced today and head coach Mario Cristobal said, “...looks like he’s got a good chance to be ready to go.” The Panthers could also return running backs Jeremiah Harden and Kendrick Rhodes.

“We haven’t found a way to overcome injuries,” coach Mario Cristobal said. “This game won’t slow down for you. That’s a new hurdle for us. In our body of work as a program, we’re always Read more

College Football Betting: Tennessee tries to shore up defense during bye week

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee at Mississippi State -3 O/U 57.5

Tennessee talks about some defensive adjustments made during the bye week. The Vols rank second to last in the SEC in total defense (425.8 ypg).

"Most of those plays generally start with a little bit of an alignment error," Dooley said. "Then it's not playing the blocks very well just from a toughness standpoint. Then the ball breaks and not being able to get the guy down in space. There were some trends. Of all the things you'd say we've got to stop during this open date it's these long runs over 30 yards or really over 15 yards.

"I feel pretty good about how we handled the open date," coach Derek Dooley said. Read more

Kent at Army
Army opened -1.5, Kent now -2
Sure, with much parody in all sports these days we see more and more pointspreads fall in the 1-2 range, but this move is not a market play but a handicapper’s adaptation of what the line should be and which team they obviously favor. Army is giving up 6.1 yards per carry and Kent has a couple of solid running backs in Trayion Durham and Dri Archer. From a power ratings perspective I have Army at -3.5 and I disagree with the move, but do not necessarily want Army here. The Black Knights cannot stop anyone and I prefer not to invest in games where little or no defense is played.

Louisville at Pittsburgh
Louisville opened -1.5 now -3.5

This is a significant move on the Cardinals and why not, they are 5-0, and Pitt has looked like the Keystone Cops at times this season. The spot favors Louisville coming off a bye with extra time to prepare while Pitt could only manage 13 points against a soft Syracuse defense. I agree with the move.

Florida at Vanderbilt
Florida opened -9 now -7.5
