Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Breaking down the NFL's new offensive coordinators Part 2

07.27.2015     08:04 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Last week in my Wiseguy Report, I wrote about a half dozen offensive coordinator changes in the NFL this past offseason.  This week, I’ll finish my analysis of the other half dozen offensive coordinator changes from around the league, with specific focus on how big of a change and how steep of a learning curve these offenses face.  Coordinators are listed in alphabetical order based on their new teams.

Kyle Shanahan, Atlanta Falcons - Shanahan’s dad was certainly a major factor in Kyle’s first few NFL coordinator jobs; none of which have been particularly successful.  Shanahan worked under Mike Shanahan protégé Gary Kubiak as OC in Houston in 2008-2009, and then worked under his dad for four years with the Redskins.  During that span, his team’s reached the playoffs only once – the ill-fated RG3 injury game against Seattle.  Last year’s debacle in Cleveland didn’t exactly bolster his Read more

College Football Handicapping: Analyzing SEC Bye Weeks

07.24.2015     09:55 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
In the ultra-competitive SEC, a well or poorly placed bye week can have a big impact on a team's season. Your opponents' bye week can also play a factor back in 2010 we pointed out that Alabama really got the shaft with nearly its entire slate having a bye week before playing the Crimson Tide.

Lets take a look at the entire conference and analyze the potential impact of each squad's bye week.

Bye Week: October 24
Prior Game: at LSU
Upcoming Game: at Georgia
Analysis: Per usual, the Gators get a week off before the World's Largest Cocktail Party. It also breaks up a tough stretch of five straight league games, including three on the road. The bad news is Georgia also comes in off a bye.

Bye Week: October 10
Prior Game: vs. Eastern Kentucky
Upcoming Game: (Thu) vs. Auburn

College Football Betting: Kansas Jayhawks should be historically bad

07.23.2015     12:09 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Whoa. If you thought Kansas football was in a bad place just wait to you see the cards they were dealt heading into 2015. For starters, the Jayhawks got rid of Charlie Weis and hired David Beaty during the offseason. Beaty had been an assistant at Kansas under Mark Mangino and more recently at Texas A&M (WR). Because of Weis' last ditch efforts to bolster the program with a slew of JC recruits that never panned out, Beaty heads into this season with only 64 scholarship players. Only five players remain from the 2013 recruiting class. To make matter worse, of those 64, a vast majority are fringe Big XII talent. In looking ahead, it's conceivable that Kansas won't be favored in a single game this year, including Week 1's home tilt vs. South Dakota State who is a top 25 FCS program. KU's two other non-conference affairs are at home vs. Memphis who is projected as one of the top teams in the AAC and at Rutgers. The Iowa State game is in Ames though Texas Tech does come to Lawrence. It's no surprise that sportsbooks have priced Kansas' season Read more

College Football Betting: Texas Tech brings in yet another new defensive coordinator

07.23.2015     08:14 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
In sticking with our fast offense, bad defense, new coordinator theme, Texas Tech welcomes first-year DC David Gibbs the program's sixth DC since 2009. Gibbs spent the past two seasons at Houston where his stop units forced an incredible 73 turnovers. To compare, the Red Raiders gained only 34 turnovers during the span. TTU's defense was historically bad last season having allowed 45+ points on five occasions including 82 to TCU. Some of the blame can be placed on Kingsbury's offense which obviously plays ultra-fast and over the last two seasons coughed up the football a whopping 61 times. Still, there weren't many teams as incompetent when it came to stopping the opposition (512.7 ypg allowed).

"We knew that he had the track record, had the credibility coming in," Kingsbury said.

College Football Handicapping: Texas A&M hires former LSU DC Chavis

07.23.2015     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Another high scoring, up-tempo team looking to shore up its defense with a new coordinator. Texas A&M ranked 104th nationally in yards per game allowed last season (450.8) so they decided to bring in former LSU DC John Chavis. The Aggies are projected to return seven defensive starters.

“You’ll see a different defense, a different philosophy,” Sumlin said, citing a more attacking style that will replace A&M’s read-and-react approach last season. “It’s been a great fit for him and for us. The buy-in has been great.”

“The scheme that John has brought in gives them the ability to get upfield. The tough part is, a lot of our linebackers, guys we project as starters, were not there in the spring [because of injuries]. We had a lot of key pieces that didn’t practice.”

College Football Betting: Gene Chizik brought in to help shore up North Carolina's defense

07.21.2015     09:32 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
There weren't many power conference defenses worse than North Carolina last season. The Tar Heels allowed nearly 500 ypg despite DC Vic Koenning's pedigree of producing strong stop units. Koenning was let go (DC, Troy) and former Auburn head coach Gene Chizik was brought in to help save Larry Fedora's job. According to reports, UNC will operate out of the 4-3.

“Coach Chizik brought in a 4-3 as our base defense, and that really fits our talent much better,” Schoettmer said.

“We had so many issues last year with blown coverages and guys not being in the right sports, and coach Chizik has simplified a lot of things to make sure that doesn’t happen as much.”

“We missed way too many tackles last year, and coach Chizik went back and watched every game, and he thought poor tracking angles was a big issue,” Schoettmer said.

“So we did a lot of tackling in the spring, and it was very physical, much more than my first three years here.”

College Football Gambling: Florida seeks more explosive offense under McElwain

07.21.2015     09:22 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Every bettor knows that Florida's offense has been lacking the last few seasons. In 2014, the Gators ranked 104th nationally in total yards. First-year head coach Jim McElwain will attempt to solve the unit's shortcomings by bringing in a new offense under OC Doug Nussmeier. Nussmeier had stints as OC at Washington, Alabama, and Michigan. While at Colorado State, the Rams' offense made huge strides under McElwain.

Total Offense (National Rank)
2014 - 480.9 ypg (19th)
2013 - 471.6 ypg (24th)
2012 - 339.0 ypg (102nd)

"We need to create explosive plays. Obviously we need to be able to change field position," McElwain said at SEC Media Days. "Some of that might be we’ll need to take chances in the special teams situations to maybe get a couple more possessions."

"The play calling from last year is totally different you know we were shotgun really all game," sophomore wide receiver Brandon Powell said at SEC Media Days. "But now this year, we’re shotgun,

College Football Handicapping: Houston starts over with former Ohio State OC Herman

07.21.2015     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
After a 35-17 record under the watch of Kevin Sumlin, the Houston Cougars weren't satisfied with three years of slightly above average football under Tony Levine. They let Levin go and hired up-and-comer Tom Herman who spent the last three years as Ohio State's offensive coordinator. Herman gutted the coaching staff and brought in two very highly regarded coordinators in Major Applewhite (OC, Texas) and Todd Orlando (DC, Utah State). The Cougars return 16 starters and are the second pick (+175) in the ACC behind Memphis (+105).

College Football Betting: Summer pointspreads offer varying opinions

07.10.2015     09:00 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Some noteworthy opinions on Week 1's matchup between Purdue and Marshall. When it comes to posting a midsummer lines, a vast majority is based on last year's results, this year's returnees, and whether or not your team has a quarterback with experience. In the case of the Thundering Herd, they return only 12 starters and lost quarterback Rakeem Cato (3,903 yards, 40 TDs, 13 INTs) and wide receiver Tommy Shuler (92 catches, 1,138 yards). Marshall won 13 games with its only loss coming in overtime vs. Western Kentucky. Purdue meanwhile returns 18 starters but that is perhaps not a good thing as the Boilermakers won only three games last season and suffered a 21-point to Central Michigan at home.

As for the Week 1's pointspread, check out the varying opinion:

BetOnline opened Purdue as a -2.5 road favorite but a flood of Marshall money had the Herd -4 as of earlier this week. Las Vegas' Stratosphere opened the game Marshall -4. Cantor had a far different opinion, opening the Herd as -10 home favorites. Some Purdue money drove the line down to its current price of -7.5 while BetOnline adjusted its line to -6.5.
