College Football Betting Preview: Arkansas State Red Wolves at Tennessee Volunteers

Arkansas State at Tennessee
Saturday, 9 am PT - SEC
CRIS Opener:
Tennessee -17.5 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Tennessee -17 O/U 57.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Tennessee -17.5
Paul Stone's Recommendation: Tennessee

A Sun Belt versus SEC pairing at Neyland Stadium, one of college football's top venues, pits teams off lopsided season-opening wins. Butch Jones' Tennessee Volunteers mowed over Utah State, 38-7, Sunday, while first-year head coach Blake Anderson and the Arkansas State Red Wolves disposed of FCS opponent Montana State by a 37-10 margin one day earlier.

Attempting to reconstruct a program short on SEC caliber talent following Derek Dooley's brief tenure, Jones, in his second season, has displayed the ability to recruit at a high level and just might bring the Volunteers back near the glory days of the past if given enough time. In its opener against Utah State, Tennessee played a Read more

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Stanford Cardinal

USC at Stanford
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Stanford -2.5 O/U 51
CRIS Current: Stanford -2.5 O/U 54
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -5.5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: USC

I provided a winning recommendation on USC with last week’s free play and will go back to the well with another play on the Trojans as they travel to Stanford as short underdogs. USC opened its season in a big way by dismantling Fresno State 52-17. They rolled up 701 yards and 37 first downs and quarterback Cody Kessler looked very comfortable in the Steve Sarkisian’s up-tempo offense.

Stanford had an easy time of it last week’s 45-0 romp over UC Davis. My concern here is Kevin Hogan facing this talented USC secondary. Hogan struggled in last season’s 20-17 loss to the Trojans with just 127 yards and two interceptions. Even without starting cornerback Josh Shaw (suspended) I expect Read more

College Football Betting Preview: South Alabama Jaguars at Kent State Golden Flashes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
South Alabama at Kent State
Saturday, 11 am PT - ESPN3
CRIS Opener:
Kent State pk O/U 52.5
CRIS Current: South Alabama -3 O/U 50.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: South Alabama -1.5
Drew Martin's Recommendation: South Alabama

South Alabama opens its season on the road against Kent State in Dix Stadium. This will be the second game of the season for the Golden Flashes after being on the wrong side of the 17-14 home contest vs. Ohio. Kent’s offense managed only 294 yards (31 yards rushing) of offense and could not take advantage of four Bobcat turnovers. This shouldn’t come as a surprise after KSU lost its two best offensive linemen and third round draft pick running back Dri Archer. Additionally, the Golden Flashes were without their most touted offensive weapon, 250 pound running back Trayion Durham. He is currently listed as questionable; I don’t believe they would hold him Read more

College Football Betting Preveiw: Michigan State Spartans at Oregon Ducks

Michigan State at Oregon
Saturday, 3:30 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Oregon -12.5 O/U 58.5
CRIS Current: Oregon -12 O/U 56
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oregon -6
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Oregon 1st half

Fascinating matchup with Michigan State headed to Eugene to take on Oregon. Obviously the theme of this handicap is contrasting styles. The Ducks want to go as fast as possible whereas Michigan State is happy to grind and have the game determined in the trenches. To compare, last season Oregon ran nearly 77 plays per game in PAC-12 play. Michigan State faced an average of 63 plays per game vs. the Big Ten. The Spartans have the benefit of health and extra time to prepare but this is a new class of game speed that coupled with the wild confines of Autzen will take MSU time to adjust.

While these two teams are different in many respects, they do have one thing in common and that's last Read more

College Football Gambling: South Carolina's defense primed for better showing?

09.03.2014     02:48 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
East Carolina at South Carolina -16.5 O/U 63

South Carolina saying all the right things following last week's defensive no-show vs. Texas A&M. While not on the Aggies' level, this week's opponent, East Carolina, hung 55 and 42 on in-state foes North Carolina and NC State, respectively, last season. Virginia Tech, however, held the Pirates to 10 points and 204 yards.

"It was very embarrassing," said sophomore linebacker T.J. Holloman. "All the guys felt embarrassed, as we should. We should feel embarrassed after giving up that many points, setting a school record. But now we just turn that embarrassment into motivation, and keep driving and driving so it doesn't happen again."

"It hurt real bad, because I don't think anybody in the world Read more

College Football Betting Alert: Bowling Green's Johnson out for the season

09.03.2014     11:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Big blow for Bowling Green with starting quarterback Matt Johnson out for the season with a hip injury. Last season Johnson had the 11st best QB rating in the country (161.7). Johnson finished 25-of-36 for 314 yards and a TD in last week's 59-31 loss to Western Kentucky. The Falcons, who play host to VMI on Saturday, will now turn to sophomore James Knapke.

Sportsbooks get hammered on Temple's upset over Vanderbilt

09.03.2014     11:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not surprising, a lot of sportsbooks got nailed on last Thursday's Temple-Vanderbilt result. The Commodores opened -17 back in late July at CRIS but closed -8.5. Sportsmemo Handicapper Erin Rynning and his clients were a part of the move as ER released +13.5. The end result was a lopsided 37-7 Owls victory.

Stoneback estimated he took "at least eight or nine" $5,000 limit bets on Temple in addition to a few larger bets from casino players who were staying at the hotel and were offered extended limits.

"There wasn't any money on Vanderbilt," Stoneback said. "It was disastrous."
