College Football Betting: Penn State looks to control the clock vs. Indiana

10.02.2013     11:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Penn State -3.5 at Indiana O/U 63.5

Penn State's Bill O'Brien talks about his team's preparation for Indiana's up-tempo offense. In last year's meeting (PSU won 45-22), the Hoosiers got off 85 plays but averaged a rather modest 5.62 ypp. The Nittany Lions also won the time of possession battle 34-26.

“They’re trying to run 90 to 100 plays a game,” O’Brien said at his weekly teleconference. “So you have to get lined up, communicate properly and handle the tempo. Then they have some really good skill players … so they’ll get you in situations where you’re going to have to make plays in space.

“You have to gauge tempo during the game, how is the game going,” he said. “You don’t want to put your defense in bad situations where Read more

NCAA Football Gambling: Texas' Ash out, McCoy to start vs. Iowa State

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas -8 at Iowa State O/U 56

Reports out today that Texas' David Ash (concussion) will sit and Case McCoy will start Thursday's game at Iowa State. McCoy isn't a massive downgrade however the Longhorns' game plan will likely be a bit more conservative. When McCoy stepped in during UT's most recent game against Kansas State, the offense was satisfied to just run the football and throw short, safe passes. McCoy averages only 5.8 yards per pass attempt while Ash averages 8.7 (26th nationally).

College Football Gambling Trends: Utah has struggled following BYU rivalry

10.02.2013     07:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA -5.5 at Utah O/U 60.5

Small trend to consider for Thursday's UCLA-Utah matchup. The Utes have a poor track record in games following their Holy War matchup against BYU. Dating back to 1980, Utah is 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS. Included in that record are two no-shows the last two seasons. In 2011, they lost at home to Washington as 8.5-point chalk, 31-14. And last season they were blasted as Arizona State 37-7. In both instances, Utah had beat BYU the previous week. The Utes do however have extra time to prepare for the Bruins thanks to last week's bye.

College Football Betting: West Virginia offense, Trickett remain a work in progress

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia at Baylor -27.5 O/U 68.5

It wasn't pretty but West Virginia's offense looked much improved last week with Clint Trickett under center. And by much improved we mean that Trickett at least showed the ability to throw the ball downfield, something the Mountaineers were unable to do with Ford Childress. Against Oklahoma State, eight WVU players caught passes and all of them had longs of 11 yards or more including three for 38 or more. Trickett however was nicked up during the win and has been limited in practice this week. And according to Dana Holgorsen, Trickett is still way behind in terms of learning the offense.

“View it as learning sign language,” said Holgorsen when asked to explain the process of relaying signs from coach to quarterback. “If you wanted to Read more

College Football Gambling: San Diego State loses key defender

10.01.2013     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nevada at San Diego State -4.5

Under-the-radar injury for San Diego State with veteran linebacker Jake Fely (foot) ruled out for the rest of the season. Fely had started 30 straight games and last season led the Aztecs in sacks (7) and was second in tackles for loss (11.5) and tackles (90). His absence could have a serious impact against Nevada.

“It’s a huge loss,” Long said. “He’s one of the best defensive players in the league.”

“Jake Fely is the heart and soul of the defense,” said senior safety Nat Berhe. “You lose a guy like that, you can try to replace him, but he’s such agreat player, he runs sideline to sideline, he makes the calls. He’s a great athlete.

College Football Handicapping: Growing pains continue for Indiana's young defense

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Penn State -3.5 at Indiana

Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson is hoping the bye week can provide his defense a much needed boost. The Hoosiers are extremely young and Wilson noted that a lot of their struggles stem from simple things like being in the right position to make plays. This week's opponent, Penn State, rolled up 546 yards and 45 points in last year's win. Dating back to last season, IU has allowed 52 ppg in its last four games against power conference competition.

"A lot of it is that you're supposed to put your eyes where you're supposed to go," Wilson said, noting some defensive players were taking extra peeks around the field. "That's what we tried to do this week, just emphasize playing your gap, playing structurally sound and keeping your eyes where they're supposed to Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Rutgers Scarlet Knights at SMU Mustangs

Rutgers at SMU
Saturday, 9 am PT
CRIS Opener:
Rutgers -3
CRIS Current: Rutgers -6.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Rutgers -5.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Rutgers

Each season I typically stumble upon two or three teams that I continually "bet on" or "bet against" regardless of matchup, situation, or number. This may last three of four weeks or the entire season depending on a number of factors – most notably whether or not I am winning. If you've followed these pages we've cashed tickets against the SMU Mustangs each of the last two weeks. There is simply not a lot of like about this squad and I once again see justification in betting against them this week.

This isn't the best of spots for Rutgers but it also isn't the worst. The Scarlet Knights come in off a bye week which should have left plenty of prep time for their AAC opener as well as next Thursday's showdown at Read more
