College Football Gambling: Wisconsin remains noncommittal on starting quarterback

08.26.2014     07:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, reports surfaced that Wisconsin was going to start former safety/JC quarterback Tanner McEvoy ahead of last year's starter Joel Stave. Now head coach Gary Andersen is saying neither one has been anointed the "No. 1 guy." Clearly McEvoy has better upside but Week 1's game vs. LSU is not an ideal environment for a rookie quarterback. At some point, the Badgers may need Stave's experience hence why Andersen hints both guys will likely see the field.

"At the end of the day we're right where we were," Andersen said. "We've got two quarterbacks that I think are going to help this football team throughout the year.

"And whoever takes the first snap doesn't necessarily say he is going to be the guy for the whole season.

"We've got two kids that want to compete and will continue to compete. That's where we're going to stay with it. "

"The offense is built around the offense, Read more

NCAA Football Gambling: South Carolina to use 3-4 defense vs. Texas A&M

08.25.2014     01:33 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good info on South Carolina's defensive game plan for Thursday's opener vs. Texas A&M. The Gamecocks obviously lost defensive end Jadeveon Clowney as well as two other veteran defensive linemen. That leaves the linebackers as one of the stop unit's strengths.

"We've always had the ability to play stand-up a defensive end and play a 3-4," linebackers coach Kirk Botkin said. "It's not much different than we've been doing in the past. We're about 50-50 in the 4-2-5 and 3-4 right now. It's really not foreign from what we've already done."

"It's going to be something we mix in," Adams said. "We're a 4-2-5 team and just because we're changing some things up everybody is in an uproar about it. We'll mix it in just like other teams do."

"When you don't have a big-name pass rusher that's proven himself, and your most experience coming back is at the linebacker spot, you've got to make sure you've got your players on the field in the right Read more

College Football Betting: Ole Miss expects more blitzes and more sacks in 2014

08.25.2014     01:19 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article on Ole Miss' defensive front seven which last year failed to do much of anything in terms of pressuring opposing quarterbacks. The Rebels recorded only 19 sacks the worst mark in the SEC based on the number of passing attempts by opposing teams. This year's group is reportedly healthier and defensive coordinator Dave Wommack is expected to be far more aggressive with his blitz calling.

“When you’re moving guys like Bryon Bennett outside and they’re used to playing inside — they hadn’t had any work doing that,” Wommack said. “We were very fortunate to win some games without getting pressure at times. I really don’t want to go through that ever again.”

College Football Gambling Update: Tennessee wants offense to focus on tight ends

08.25.2014     12:49 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Virtually non-existent last year, Tennessee plans on utilizing its tight ends more in 2014. Head coach Butch Jones went so far as to say the offense would be "tight end-oriented." That sounds a bit extreme but also smart considering the Vols now have both talent and depth and the position. It will also in theory help quarterback Justin Worley’s development.

“We want to be a tight end-oriented offense,” Jones said last week. “... Now we have a little bit of depth, but we also have competition there as well, which is great to see. The competition has really elevated the play of a lot of individuals at that particular spot.”

“(Offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian) does a great job of adjusting year-by-year to the strength of the team,” Elder said. “As we play and as we play well, we’re going to be in more multiple tight Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: College Football Against The Spread Outliers

08.25.2014     07:23 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College football season kicks off on Thursday Night. By Labor Day, we’ll have seen 78 teams play other FBS opponents and another 46 teams play against FCS foes, available for betting at many top books on the Extra Games board. How important are those Week 1 results when we project forward? What about Week 2 and Week 3? Read on to find out!

Twenty-four college football teams were pointspread outliers last year. Twelve squads hit 70% or better ATS. Twelve more squads hit 30% or worse for the full season. This falls within recent historical patterns – in every recent season, 20-25% of the teams are strong bet-on or bet against squads. If we broaden the base to 67% ATS wins or losses for the full season, it’s not unusual to see one third or more of the teams in college football fall into bet-on or bet-against categories.

In 2013, Auburn, Missouri, Florida State, Duke, Navy, North Texas, Houston, Florida Atlantic and Wisconsin all finished the season hitting 75% ATS or better, with Bowling Green, Colorado State, Georgia State right behind. And that list doesn’t even include significant moneymakers (9-4 ATS) like Baylor, UCLA, Minnesota, Tulane, Read more

College Football Betting: Virigina Tech names former Texas Tech quarterback its starter

08.25.2014     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For the first time since 2011, Virginia Tech will have a new starting quarterback. Michael Brewer, who transferred from Texas Tech, was named the team's Week 1 starter. Brewer played in 13 games for the Red Raiders the last two seasons (51-of-58, 440 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INTs). Dating back to high school, Brewer has played almost exclusively in a shotgun/spread offense. He'll be asked to play under center with OC Scot Loeffler running more of a pro-style attack.

"Both guys are going to be needed in the season," said Tech offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler in the statement released by Tech. "You always need a good, solid starter and a good backup. Both of them need to be ready to go. Brenden Motley will be third on the depth chart and will continue to develop."

"I'd say when we're spread out and throwing the ball around, that's what I'm used to, stuff like that," said Brewer on Friday regarding his greatest strength as a quarterback since arriving at Virginia Read more

College Football Gambling: Vanderbilt goes with experience, names Robinette starting QB

08.22.2014     06:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vanderbilt first-year head coach Derrick Mason has named Patton Robinette the team’s starting quarterback. Robinette was under center for historical wins over Georgia and Florida but his numbers weren't all too impressive (52.3%, 4 TDs, 5 INTs). He's the only signal caller on the roster with starting experience at the collegiate level.

"I think (playing experience) had little to do with it in the long run," Mason said after practice Thursday night. "For us, we were just looking for the most consistent guy day in and day out. He had very few lows, a lot of highs and really just did a great job of keeping his composure."
