College Football Gambling: The revolving door of defensive coordinators continues for Indiana

08.04.2016     08:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson has done a really good job in Bloomington after gutting the program his first year (1-11) and finally getting the Hoosiers to the postseason in 2015. His offense has proven capable of scoring on practically everyone (31.3 ppg vs. Michigan, Ohio State, and Michigan State LY). It's the defense that has held them back. Last season, the Hoosiers lost five games by one score and in those contests allowed 43.2 ppg. IU heads into this season on its third defensive coordinator in six years. Tom Allen steps in after a one-year stint as USF's DC. He plans to employ a new 4-2-5 scheme.

“I think they’re here,’’ Allen said. “We’re going to recruit to it, but I didn’t come here and evaluate the team and think ‘Man, we’re really lacking this certain position.’ The one position to me that’s the most unique is the Husky position, the hybrid linebacker/safety. We feel like we have two or three guys there

College Football Handicapping: Big Ten increases league schedule to nine games

08.04.2016     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We put together a breakdown of the Big Ten's home and away and cross division pairings now that the conference slate has been increased from eight to an uneven nine games. It looks as if this season the entire East Division will get the five home/four away split. Overall, there are some obvious favorable and unfavorable draws. Penn State for example gets the 5 home/4 away split, two of the "Big Three" (Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State) at home as as well as its two toughest West games (Minnesota and Iowa). On the other end of the spectrum, Wisconsin plays only four conference home games, gets the entire "Big Three" from the East two of which on the road, and plays two of its three toughest division games (Iowa, Nebraska, and Iowa) on the road in back-to-back-to-back weeks.

College Football Handicapping: Nowhere to go but up for Wake Forest offense

08.03.2016     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One of our favorite things to blog about during the summer is bad college football offenses. Yesterday, we discussed the Kansas Jayhawks who remain married to the "air raid" offense despite not having nearly enough talent to pull it off. Wake Forest is projected to be far more vanilla in its approach after averaging less than 300 ypg of total offense against the ACC. Despite winning only three games, there were plenty of examples that Wake could be competitive. In four games against Indiana, Florida State, Louisville, and Duke, the Demon Deacons lost each by one score and were outgained by a combined 57 yards. Most of that however had to do with Wake's defense. Take away games against high-powered North Carolina and Clemson and Wake's seasonal defensive numbers (5.16 ypp allowed) were solid. But the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Kansas could be a great over bet this season

08.02.2016     11:05 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
By default, Kansas is probably going to be better than last year. It may not result in more wins or even pointspread covers, but being outgained by 2.26 yards per play is hard to duplicate. The Jayhawks were equally awful in 2014 and were outgained by "only" 1.67 ypp. It's clear that head coach David Beaty's "air raid" offense isn't the right fit for winning games or even being competitive considering the roster's current lack of talent but any increase in offensive productivity and the right opponent (and number) and perhaps there will be some value on playing this squad over the total. Kansas finished 6-6 O/U last season but three of the team's six unders were with totals of 71, 74, and 76 high numbers even for a competent offense. When priced with totals below 60, KU went 5-2 O/U. And in those seven games, Kansas topped two touchdowns only twice. Keep an eye out for situations where the Jayhawks face more moderate offenses (and thus moderate totals Read more

College Football Handicapping: Hard to get excited about the Lovie Smith era at Illinois

08.01.2016     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If Illinois isn't on your list of teams to fade early in the season, it should be. First-year head coach with little to no college experience. First-year offensive and defensive coordinators. Huge question marks at the quarterback position. A run-first offense behind a suspect offensive line. And lack of depth at the running back position. Good luck, Lovie.
