Billy Walters continues to draw attention from the media

06.01.2016     09:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone thinks they have a beat on Billy Walters. Whether it's a steam play at 2 am on a college football total, his current net worth, or how many homes he owns.

“Walters is the only person I know who started out a degenerate gambler and became a successful one. He’s a mythical figure in Las Vegas.”

“Las Vegas betting is a very different game from playing the stock market,” said Brad Simon, a former federal prosecutor in private practice. He added: “Career insider traders traditionally know better than to make these kinds of purchases.”

College Football Gambling: Baylor set to bring in former Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe

05.31.2016     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In full-on damage control mode, Baylor has decided to bring in former Wake Forest head coach Jim Grobe on an interim basis. Grobe put together an impressive stretch three-year stretch from 2006-08 where the Demon Deacons went 28-12 thanks in large part to a +39 combined turnover margin. He failed to produce a winning season after that and eventually resigned in 2013. As Grobe mentioned following the announcement, winning will likely take a backseat to cleaning up what has evolved into a total mess. The Bears' season over/under wins opened 9un-125 and has since been bet down to 9un-160. Baylor opens the season with its annual three "gimmie" wins (Northwestern State, SMU, and Rice).

"He has successfully led two FBS programs during his career," McCaw said in the statement. "Coach Grobe enjoys an impeccable reputation within the intercollegiate athletics community and is a man of great integrity and faith."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Prepping for the College Football season

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
My summer homework progression is simple.  I do my NFL work first, because not that much changes in the professional ranks over the summer.  Once we’re done with the draft and the initial free agent signing period, it’s easy to make preliminary assessments of all 32 NFL teams.  While the season win total market is still a long way from true maturity, we do have a pretty good sense of two things.  First, how the 32 teams are projected, power ratings wise and second, how tough a team’s schedule is going to be.

When it comes to college football, I don’t do much until after the MLB All-Star break, and the majority of my college football prep comes in August.  Why the difference?  Simple – a lot more changes in college over the summer, and I’m not a big fan of doing the same work twice!  The depth charts that you’re going to see popping up in all the college football preview publications were accurate at the end of spring camp.  By mid-August, they’re essentially obsolete.

There are many more players moving up and down the depth charts in college.  There are more Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: The Secret Truth About the NFL

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everybody is talking about quarterbacks, with the NFL draft upcoming, starting on Thursday.  In recent weeks, both the St Louis Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles paid a steep price to move up to #1 and #2. The expectations are that California's Jared Goff and North Dakota State's Carson Wentz will go with the top two picks, although their draft order is still up in the air.

If things go well with those two picks, the Rams and Eagles will be set up for the long term with above average quarterbacks.  If things go poorly with those two picks, the Rams and Eagles will be steady, consistent losers until the next time they draft a QB in the first round.  In fact, that’s exactly where the Rams have just been since they picked Sam Bradford #1 overall back in 2010.

The advanced metric pundits are all screaming bad deal for the two teams that traded up, and great deal for the two teams that traded down (Tennessee and Cleveland).  And the history of QB’s going #1 and #2 in the draft hasn’t seen two above average quarterbacks in those spots since 1971.

Here’s the list:

A Pefect Match: Gambling and the Super Bowl

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Publicly, the NFL is among one of the staunchest opponents of legalized gambling. Former commissioner Paul Tagliabue and current commissioner Roger Goodell were instrumental in getting the anti gaming ‘Illegal Internet Gambling Prohibition Act’ attached to the Port Security Bill. The NFL has taken this stance despite the fact that its enormous popularity is, in no small part, due to the prevalence of betting on games.

The hypocrisy of the NFL in regards to betting is almost laughable. The facts, as you will see, clearly show that the league was founded by gamblers for gamblers. From the NFL’s first television appearance in 1939 through the current TV deal that pumps more than three billion dollars per year into the league coffers, the NFL’s popularity rests upon the shoulders of those who wager on the outcome of the games.

Here in the 21st century, the NFL is the most popular and profitable sport in the. NFL owners are among the richest men in the world; franchises are bought and sold for more than half a billion dollars. However, the league’s humble origins were anything but the extravagant bonanza that is the NFL today. Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Calipari says refs are no longer calling enough fouls

01.21.2016     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Kentucky head coach John Calipari, the referees have reverted back to allowing too much physical play. This theory comes on the heels of UK's 75-70 loss at Auburn in which the Cats committed 25 fouls while the Tigers committed only 13. Auburn also nearly doubled up Kentucky from the line with 31 attempts to only 18. In five SEC games, Kentucky has committed 119 fouls vs. only 93 from the opposition. SEC foes have also shot 130 free throws to Kentucky's 111. That's a far cry from last season when UK shot on average seven more free throws per game that its opponents.

“We gotta go back to football practice,” Calipari said. “All this stuff about rules, like we’re not going to put hands on, not going to hip check – it’s done. They clearly didn’t have the stomach to continue it, so we’re just going to go back to like I did in 2013, where we just said, ‘Put on the football helmets and let’s go.’

“The games,
