Betting Preview: South Carolina Gamecocks at Florida Gators

South Carolina at Florida -6.5 O/U 51.5
Recommendation: Florida
Saturday, 4:15 pm PT - ESPN

I had feeling a couple of weeks ago that the Gators were primed for a late season push. Now too far removed from their rock bottom three-game losing streak, Florida stands to win the SEC East division title with a win over South Carolina on Saturday. The UF offense used their bye week prior to the Georgia contest to add a large dose of the “hurry-up” which was rather successful as last week they unleashed redshirt freshman tight end Jordan Reed as a dual threat option at quarterback. Reed’s 6-3, 240 lbs. frame and powerful right arm give the Gators run or pass diversity in down and distance situations which keeps defenses guessing. With starter John Brantley, Trey Burton and now Reed, Florida has three quarterbacks that they can interchange but Reed’s multi dimensional skills are really going to force Gamecock defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson to prepare for a ton of things this Read more

Mississippi State at Alabama -12.5 O/U 47.5
Recommendation: Under
Saturday, 4:15 pm PT – ESPN2

Who would have ever thought that Alabama and Mississippi State would enter this matchup with identical 7-2 records after nine games? As farfetched as it may have seemed at the beginning of the year, that is the case now. Alabama fell out of the national title race last week with its 24-21 loss at LSU and now we will find out how they respond. This is the first time in over a year that the Tide has played a game without everything on the line in terms of winning a national title. For the most part, they are out of the SEC title race as well with Auburn still undefeated and LSU having one loss and the tie-breaker if something happens to Auburn.

There are a couple of factors that might suggest a good performance from the Crimson Tide. For starters, there is no pressure on them to win and second, they are coming off their worst defensive performance of the year. My concern though is whether or Read more

Iowa -9.5 at Northwestern O/U 50
Recommendation: Iowa
Saturday, 9 am PT – ESPN

The Big Ten title is still very much up for grabs with Iowa still in the running. Next week on the docket for the Hawkeyes is a huge game at home against Ohio State. However, it’s crucial the Hawkeyes don’t get caught napping this week with their trip to Evanston to face Northwestern. More pressing for the Hawkeyes is two straight losses to the Wildcats, of which they were 8- and 15-point favorites. Iowa avoided an upset last week against Indiana by scoring a late touchdown in the 18-13 win. Still, the Hawkeyes dominated the box score in that contest with 7.2 to 4.5 yard per play edge. In addition, the Hawkeyes were without the services of stud running back Adam Robinson who is listed as probable for this contest.

Meanwhile, the Wildcats must pick themselves off the ground after blowing a huge lead against Penn State last week. The Wildcats started the campaign 5-0, but have now dropped three Read more

Pittsburgh -5.5 at UConn O/U 48
Recommendation: Pittsburgh
Thursday, 4:30 pm PT – ESPN

A Thursday night Big East battle on ESPN when the Pitt Panthers travel to take on the UConn Huskies. Pittsburgh is the league’s lone unbeaten team at 3-0 and actually has a two-game lead in the standings. The Panthers are in position to put a stranglehold on the conference and solidify their chances of BCS bowl game; their first since 2004.

Pittsburgh is a perfect 3-0 ATS in conference games as well, and while UConn is just 1-2 in Big East play, the Huskies did upset West Virginia on this field in late October as a home underdog. But inconsistent play and shuffling at the quarterback position has hurt the Huskies and facing the league’s best team is not going to suddenly get them healthy or playing significantly better. I’m well aware the Huskies have been their best at home, now 4-0 SU/ATS this Read more

Kansas at Nebraska -35 O/U 60.5
Recommendation: See analysis
Saturday, 4 pm PT

The storyline for this weekend's Kansas vs. Nebraska matchup is obviously KU head coach Turner Gill's return to Lincoln. Gill enjoyed a storied career as a Cornhusker during the mid-80s. He finished fourth in the Heisman voting in 1983 and went a perfect 20-0 as a starting quarterback in Big Eight play. Nebraska means a lot to Turner Gill and Gill means a lot to Nebraska. Here is a recent article from KUsports.com talking about the emotions between Gill and his former coach Tom Osborne.

Often times when games are projected to be so one-sided it is tough to find a viable edge. Nebraska is no question the class of this matchup and capable of naming whatever score it so chooses. Kansas is coming off a miraculous come-from-behind win over Colorado in which it scored 35 fourth quarter points, Read more

Penn State at Ohio State -18 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: Under
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

Ohio State’s weak non-conference schedule has left them well outside the BCS title picture in ninth place. They likely don’t have a realistic shot at leapfrogging seven teams to achieve their goal of playing for a National Title but not all BCS hope is lost. The Buckeyes can still claim the Big Ten title and a potential Rose Bowl berth or at-large Fiesta Bowl invite.

If they are disappointed in their current position they aren’t showing it on the field. After the disheartening loss to Wisconsin Jim Tressel’s crew came back and smoked outmanned Purdue and Minnesota by a combined score of 101-10, covering a pair of bloated spreads in the process. Those two ATS wins pushed their overall spread record to a solid 7-2. This continues an impressive betting trend as Ohio State is now 28-13 (68%) as a favorite dating back to the 2007 season.

How do they do it? A combination of Read more

NFL Handicapping: Inside the Betting Numbers Week 9

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Throughout the NFL season, Fairway Jay provides a look at weekly box scores, stats and how to utilize the numbers and situations for success. Jay is currently ranked as the no. 1 NFL handicapper in the nation as documented by the Sports Monitor with a remarkable 33-14 70% record.

Week 9 favorites went 12-1 straight up (SU) and 6-5-2 against the spread (ATS). I graded the Monday night game between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati a push (+6), and the Raiders as a 1-point favorite despite late money pushing Kansas City to a 1-point favorite. Most Chiefs bettors had a ‘Dog wager on Kansas City and the really sharp guys had the Chiefs +3 and pushed when Oakland won in overtime. For the season betting favorites are 54-69-7 ATS (44%). Four division games last week and the favorites went 4-0 SU and 3-1 ATS. Division favorites are now 21-18 SU and 15-24 ATS. NFL home underdogs had a tough week going 1-6 SU and 2-3-2 ATS and are 20-22 SU and 23-16-3 ATS this season. Scoring picked up again and totals went 10-2-1 and are now Read more

NBA Betting Notes: Denver Nuggets at Indiana Pacers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver at Indiana -1 O/U 208.5

Some notes on tonight’s Denver at Indiana matchup passed along by Fairway Jay. The Nuggets have been forced to play “small ball” with at times only one player (Melvin Ely) over 6-9. Last night against Chicago, Nene Hilario (6-11) returned from a groin injury and snagged seven rebounded in 27 minutes but is listed as questionable for tonight. For the Pacers, they welcome back Brandon Rush who was serving a five-game suspension.

"I'm expecting him to play well," said Coach Jim O'Brien. "He played in preseason and there were some games he did a great job. He's a veteran guard and he led us in minutes last year if I'm not mistaken. So you're not necessarily looking at a third-year player, you're looking at a guy that Read more
