NBA Handicapping: Pacers claim to have practiced defense after historically bad effort

01.19.2016     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It's hard to allow 247 points in regulation in back-to-back games, especially when neither opponent had Golden State printed on its jersey. That's the situation for Indiana as they limp into tonight's road game at Phoenix having allowed 118 to Washington and 129 last time out to Denver. This isn't the first time the Pacers stank up the joint defensively and called for a bounceback effort. Back in mid-December, they coughed up 131 in a loss to Warriors and then took down Miami 96-83 next time out. Of course the game following that, Indiana was blown out by Detroit, 118-96.

A day after describing his team’s defensive performance as “embarrassing,” Pacers coach Frank Vogel ran a “spirited” practice dedicated to that end of the floor.

“I thought we had better focus,” George said. “We were definitely tied

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Conference Championship Preview

Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
March Madness has a lock on the Final Four terminology, but we’re down to the final four teams standing in the NFL Playoffs following a wild weekend of football.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll take a look at how the Final Four teams still standing this NFL season survived, and what their realistic chances of Super Bowl success are moving forward into the Conference Championship Games this coming weekend.

Denver was outgained by more than two full yards per PLAY against the Steelers.  It was not vintage Peyton Manning, to put it mildly: 37 pass attempts for 215 yards, with only two passes all afternoon gaining more than 15 yards.  If you were watching the game, you already know how many missed connections that Manning had with his receivers – no shortage of inaccurate passes and dropped balls.  With the exception of one explosive 34-yard run by CJ Anderson, Denver’s running game wasn’t much better.  Anderson and Ronnie Hillman’s other 30 carries combined for just 76 yards.

But the Broncos avoided mistakes, playing turnover free football; the first time as a starter all season in which Manning Read more

NFL Gambling: Pittsburgh's Brown ruled out, money continues to trickle in on Denver

01.15.2016     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
It's crazy that there's not a full market on Sunday's Pittsburgh-Denver game but easy to explain once you check the injury report. Ben Roethlisberger's shoulder is currently being held together with scotch tape. The same can be said about DeAngelo Williams' ankle. And news came out this morning that Antonio Brown has been ruled out due to a concussion suffered in last week's brawl vs. Cincinnati. Most sportsbooks offering action on the game have Denver north of a touchdown favorite. Remember, Pinnacle opened this game Broncos -3 with a little bit of juice.

NHL Handicapper Free Play: New Jersey Devils at St. Louis Blues

New Jersey +160 at St. Louis O/U 4.5
Recommendation: New Jersey

The New Jersey Devils continue their Midwest road trip on Tuesday with a contest against the struggling St. Louis Blues. The Devils picked up a 2-1 win on Sunday after losing their last three contests while the Blues picked up a 2-1 victory of their own over the Los Angeles Kings after dropping six of their last seven prior games. St. Louis is dealing with a handful of key injuries, most notably the loss of goaltender Jake Allen, who's out indefinitely with a leg injury and defenseman Jay Bouwmeester (concussion). Along with the previous injuries sustained by wingers Magnus Paajarvi, Jaden Schwartz, Steve Ott and defenseman Carl Gunnarson, the Blues have had to call up several young players from the Chicago Wolves (AHL). Both teams have struggled on offense as of late which is the reason for the total opening at 4.5. This is New Jersey's fourth time in the last five games with a 4.5 total due largely in part to the Devils scoring three or fewer goals in 15 of their last 16 games. In those four previous games, the Devils went 0-3-1 O/U and are currently on a 1-7-3 O/U run. St. Louis has Read more

Bucknell -1.5 at Lehigh O/U 154
Recommendation: Bucknell

Patriot League play has a ray of sunshine for Bucknell which has steamrolled their first four opponents by nearly 21 points per game. The Bison played admirably against the better non-conference teams they faced as well so perhaps it’s no surprise that the step down in class to league play has seen them flourish thus far. At North Carolina State, Bucknell shot 51.6% and lost just 99-86 and they also hung within eight of ACC member Wake Forest (lost 90-82) and lost by just four to Penn State 62-58. The high octane, 94-foot style of Bucknell has seen them become vulnerable on the defensive end allowing 1.03 points per possession. However, with four of the top six in their rotation shooting between 44-52.5% from the field, they’ve been able to easily outscore league opposition. Lehigh does not subscribe to the up-tempo philosophy but they’ve been dragged into it multiple times this season by teams who prefer running. The situation here of a home, conference game for Lehigh does suggest that they should somewhat be able to control the pace but not sure they can prevent Bucknell Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Evaluating the health of the remaining eight NFL playoff teams

01.11.2016     10:19 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Wild Card weekend is in the rear view mirror, with all four road teams emerging victorious on the opening weekend of the NFL Playoffs.  One game was a blowout, with the Chiefs destroying the Texans.  Two games were coin flips that came down to last second field goals, with the Steelers making their field goal while the Vikings missed theirs, allowing Seattle to survive and advance.  And the fourth game was a close contest that turned into a blowout by the end of the fourth quarter thanks to a performance from Green Bay that was as good as anything that we’ve seen from the Packers since October.

The mainstream media will focus on the quarterbacks and the head coaches, because that’s what the mainstream media does.  In the mainstream world, Andy Reid; noted for a decade worth of playoff failures in Philadelphia, is now a genius because his team is on an 11-game winning streak.  Aaron Rodgers, off the worst statistical season of his career, is now back to his elite self; thanks to one playoff win against a banged up defense.

Serious bettors know one thing about the NFL Playoffs – health matters!  Do the Read more

College Basketball Betting: UNLV parts ways with head coach Dave Rice

01.11.2016     08:42 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
After losing five of its last six, UNLV decided what better time than the present to get rid of head coach Dave Rice. The Rebels had the talent and defense to not only compete but win what looks to be a watered down Mountain West Conference this year. But an inability to hold leads and win close games has them 0-3 in league play with three losses by a combined six points. Now, the team will look to assistant Todd Simon to help save a sinking ship. Simon's "promotion" however has been viewed by some as questionable, especially with veteran Max Good a part of the staff. Not much turnaround time with the Rebels playing host to New Mexico tomorrow evening.

Miami -5 at Phoenix O/U 196.5
Recommendation: Miami

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against the Phoenix Suns these days.  My power ratings have seen the Suns steadily dropping for the better part of the last month, from mediocre to bad to bottom feeder.  Here in the second week of January, I’ve got the Suns priced in the same range as Philadelphia and LA – clearly the two weakest teams in the NBA – below the likes of other weaklings like Denver, Minnesota and Brooklyn.

The chemistry problems in Phoenix have been on full display for weeks.  Head coach Jeff Hornacek saved his job only by dumping several of his top assistants.  Quote after quote coming out of the Suns locker room speaks of a team that doesn’t like each other very much and isn’t in position to turn things around anytime soon.

The Suns snapped a nine-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 111-102 win over Charlotte. On the heels of two truly dismal showings – allowing 83 second half points in a blowout loss to the Kings, followed by scoring only 22 points in the first half of a blowout loss to the Read more

NFL Handicapping: Super cold temps expected for Seahawks-Vikings

01.08.2016     08:53 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
So it's going to be cold in Minneapolis for Sunday's Seahawks-Vikings Wild Card matchup. Like, really cold. Like, around zero with a "Real Feel" of -20. The wind isn’t expected to be that bad at less than 10 mph. And it's an afternoon start with sunny skies. That said, the bettings markets have taken a strong whack at the under. The game opened 42.5 and was bet down to 39.5.

Chicago +100 at Pittsburgh O/U 5
Recommendation: Chicago

The Chicago Blackhawks open up a home-and-home series at Pittsburgh this evening. Chicago has heated up as of late with a current three-game winning streak and victories in 10 of its last 14 overall. Patrick Kane has continued to light up the scoreboard with 12 points in his last 10 games. Along with his linemates Artem Anisimov and Artemi Panarin, the trio have combined for 49 goals this season. Corey Crawford has been outstanding between the pipes, recording his league-leading sixth shutout in a 26-save effort over Ottawa on Sunday night. The 31-year old netminder has won nine of his last 12 starts and allowed two or fewer goals in nine of those contests. The Penguins are trying to turn things around on their season having won four of their last six games after suffering a five-game losing streak. The return of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury from a mild concussion means an obvious upgrade to what had been a very unstable tandem of backups Jeff Zatkoff and call-up Matt Murray. Zatkoff lost three of his last four starts and was demoted to the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton upon Fleury's Read more
