College Basketbal Betting Free Pick: Gonzaga Bulldogs at Loyola Marymount Lions

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Gonzaga at Loyola Marymount +16 O/U 142
Recommendation: Loyola Marymount

As bad as Loyola Marymount's record looks, with the exception of a 92-51 loss at BYU (Cougars were in a huge revenge spot), they've been competitive more often than not in West Coast Conference play. They went to St. Mary's and lost by 13 and their other four WCC losses were by single digits. Note that they also managed to slip in a home win over a quality Santa Clara squad. And go back even further and we saw the Lions at home catching +10 against Ole Miss only to lose by three. Over the last six meetings in the series, the highest pointspread was Gonzaga -16.5...in Spokane. In their last three trips to Los Angeles, the Zags were laying -10.5 (won by 4), -9 (won by 10), and -11.5 (lost outright). Another key factor is the prep time. LMU head coach Max Good admitted that star Anthony Ireland has been worn down of late. The Lions had a full week of rest and prepare for the league's Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Close games in the Big East, blowouts in the SEC

01.30.2013     01:28 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are a few conference-only statistics from Ken Pom that break down home courts (SU), close games (4 points or less and/or OT), and blowouts (19 points or more). There are 33 conferences if you include independent. Below are the top 10 conferences and rank. In terms of home court, the ACC has been the strongest at 30-11 SU. The Missouri Valley Conference is also north of 70%. The Big East has had the highest percentage of close game at 30.9% with the A-10 not far behind at 27.3%. Interesting that despite its slow pace (63.4 possessions per game) and low scoring affairs, only six of 46 Big Ten conference games have been decided by four points or less or went to overtime. When it comes to blowouts, the SEC is top dog with 25% of its games decided by 19 points or more – in large part because of Florida who has five of the 11.

Big Ten
Home Court: 26-20, 56.5% (23)
Close Game: 6 of 46, 13.0% (28)
Blowout: 9 of 46, 19.6% (7)

Big East
Home Court: 30-25, 54.5% (26)
Close Game: 17 of 55, 30.9% (2)
Blowout: 5 of 55, 9.1% Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Pick: Oregon Ducks at Stanford Cardinal

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon at Stanford -2 O/U 139
Recommendation: Over

Last time out, without starting point guard Dominic Artis, Oregon scored 81 points in an up-tempo, 76 possession game against Washington. I don't think we'll see those types of numbers tonight but it's clear that from a tempo standpoint, even without Artis, the Ducks are going to continue to run.

"We need to keep running," Altman said. "That suits us and helps us with our depth. If we're going to play nine or 10 guys, we've got to make sure we're pressing the other team."

Stanford has been up and down all season but we've seen the Cardinal push tempo with a willing partner. Games against USC, UCLA and Colorado featured an average of 70 possessions. The problem for Stanford has been an inconsistent offense. I expect them to pressure Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Injuries, illness impact USC-UCLA matchup

01.30.2013     11:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
USC at UCLA -8 O/U 143.5

Lots of unknowns for tonight's USC-UCLA matchup. Shabazz Muhammad (flu) and Travis Wear (concussion) are questionable for the Bruins – though Ben Howland hinted both players are expected to play. As for USC, 7-0 big man Dewayne Dedmon is also questionable with the flu. An article from yesterday mentioned Dedmon hadn't even been out of bed.

"Travis was not able to do any contact [Tuesday], but he ran up and down and did a bunch of shooting," Howland said. "I anticipate he'll be cleared to play because he had no symptoms."

College Basketball Gambling: Kentucky impresses in win over Ole Miss

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

It’s been a down year for Kentucky so far, at least in terms of preseason expectations. Too many pundits and fans were assuming head coach John Calipari would just reload every year and coast to a championship with future NBAers. The Wildcats are finally starting to play to its talent this season. Tuesday’s 87-74 win at #19 Mississippi as a 3-point underdog was particularly impressive.

Kentucky 87, #19 Mississippi 74

2-Point Percentage: Kentucky 61%, Ole Miss 33%

3-Point Shooting: Kentucky 8/23, Ole Miss 5/16

Free Throws: Kentucky 23/37, Ole Miss 13/20

1’s and 2’s: Kentucky 63, Ole Miss 59

Rebounds: Kentucky 42, Ole Miss 44

College Basketball Betting: La Salle hopes to avoid letdown, maintain success vs. UMass

01.30.2013     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UMass at La Salle -9

It's been a competitive series but La Salle has gotten the better of UMass seven out of the last eight meetings (7-1 ATS). Note that during that span, neither team was favored by more than -5. The Explorers are off significant back-to-back wins over Butler and VCU.

“I think our guys realize that we were 0-2 against them last year and that we got crushed down there,” Kellogg said. “If they don’t, I’m going to remind them, just to let them know that this is a tough place to go in and play.”

“Losing to them guys left a bad taste in our mouth,” he said. “Most guys are riled up for it.”

College Basketball Betting: Rutgers' opponents hold edge due to extra prep time

01.30.2013     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers at Cincinnati -11.5

It makes sense that in the Big East, teams with extra time to rest and prepare would have a significant advantage over those who had a short turnaround. That appears to be the case with Rutgers (3-5 SU/ATS vs. Big East) who has played a handful of rested-and-ready conference foes. Of their eight Big East games, opponents had on average nearly an extra day more to prepare for the Scarlet Knights. Last week, UConn had a full week to prep for Rutgers – the Huskies won and covered (-8.5) 66-54. Tonight, Cincinnati plays its first game since last Monday and of course plays host to Rutgers who during that span played two contests.

"It's just the preparation in what you're able to do with preparing your team," Rice said. "It seems like the Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Pick: Illinois State Redbirds at Bradley Braves

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Illinois State -4.5 at Bradley
Recommendation: Illinois State

Illinois State was a juggernaut for most of their non-conference campaign.  The Redbirds took Northwestern (with Drew Crawford still healthy) to overtime.  They came three points short of upsetting Louisville at the KFC Yum Center.  They went to Dayton and won straight up.  There was talk about the Missouri Valley Conference being a three bid league this year.

But once conference play started, the Redbirds slumped – six consecutive SU and ATS losses.  Facing a circle the wagons came at Southern Illinois, Illinois State led by 26 at halftime on their way to a 14 point road win.  They followed that up with back-to-back home wins over Indiana State and Evansville, getting their confidence level back to where it was a month ago.  Facing a Bradley team that they have dominated in recent years – seven straight wins in the series, including a pair Read more
