College Basketball Free Play: Memphis Tigers at Southern Miss Golden Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Memphis at Southern Miss -2.5 O/U 133.5
Recommendation: Under

With the conference lead at stake combined with Southern Mississippi’s determination for revenge against Memphis, have to believe this will be a tightly contested affair. Recent history, including this season’s 60-58 Tigers win, has shown these teams to play hard fought, defensive battles as three of the last four have stayed under the total. Additional technical trends also point in that direction as Memphis has gone under in this price range five of its last six C-USA road games and Southern Miss is 64% under the total at home (16 of 25) the last three years. Fundamentally, each team is strong defensively permitting only 58.9 (Memphis) and 63.6 (Southern Mississippi) points per game in league play. Rebounding is a solid asset for each team so can’t expect a lot of second chances here. Expect a moderate tempo contest with contested shots for the entire 40 minutes as these teams keep this one under the total.

Super Bowl XLVI Gambling: All-time Super Bowl results in dome stadiums

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There have been 14 Super Bowls played in indoor dome stadiums (note that in all three instances where a retractable dome was involved, it was closed for the game). In those 14 contests (see chart below), the Louisiana Superdome has played host six times. Not surprisingly, with the advent of retractable domes, we’ve had six indoor Super Bowls in the last 12 years with each at a different venue. The perfect conditions and faster surfaces would seemingly help offenses and push more totals overs the number but the results haven’t shown that to be the overwhelming case. Here are some side and total records that have been compiled in dome stadium Super Bowls which could be considered when making game or prop bets this year:

- The second half has been higher scoring than the first half in 12 of the 14 games

- The second half has averaged 26.4 points and produced 24 or more nine times

- The first quarter has produced 3 points or less in five of the last six dome Super Bowls

- The fourth quarter has erupted for 17 or more points in that same six game stretch

- The closing total has been off of the final result by 11 or more points Read more

Super Bowl XLVI Betting Tips: New England Patriots first half O/U review

New York Giants vs. New England -3 O/U 55.5

For the upcoming Super Bowl between New York and New England, the first half total currently sits at 27.5 or 28 depending on where you shop. There is a real head scratching contrast in the first half play of Patriots games this season. What’s very interesting to note is that their road games have been significantly higher scoring than those played in Foxboro. In six of their eight road games this season, New England’s first halves have totaled 27 or more points and those contests averaged 31 points. Conversely, Patriots home games resulted in 23 first half points or less seven of 10 times for an average of 21.7 points. The initial reaction to those extremely different first half point totals would be that New England’s last two games have been at home and their defense has improved of late. Therefore it stands to reason that their first half totals would average out lower. That argument sinks in immediately when you Read more

AFC Championship Prop Bet: New England TE Aaron Hernandez Receiving Yards

Baltimore at New England -7 O/U 50

New England Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez Total Receiving Yards?
Prop Bet Recommendation: Over 58.5 -140 (5Dimes)

Willing to lay the extra juice here with Patriots TE Hernandez who has averaged 65 receiving yards per game and gone over this total three of the last five games. His rapport with QB Tom Brady has increased immensely over the current five-game stretch as the pair has connected for 438 yards which is 48.1% of Hernandez’s receiving yardage for the year. With Baltimore having to be more concerned with slot receiver Wes Welker and fellow TE Rob Gronkowski, expect option No. 3 Hernandez to have constant matchup advantages. I don’t feel the Ravens’ linebackers are anything more than average in coverage, and their strong safeties simply can’t handle him. Look for Hernandez to go OVER this number and pick up 75+ yards receiving.           Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting Preview: UConn Huskies at Tennessee Volunteers

Connecticut at Tennessee

This will be a difficult task for the Vols who will be excited about playing this national power on their home floor but may be doing so at the wrong time. Unlike the other two non-conference underdogs, the situation doesn’t hold any advantage for Tennessee. Connecticut is looking forward to this quick turnaround so they can gain a bit of redemption after Wednesday’s night’s home upset loss to Cincinnati. Meanwhile, Tennessee is off an overtime heartbreaker at Georgia where they led inside of a minute during regulation and OT. Connecticut has sorely missed the scoring and defense of freshman guard Ryan Boatwright the past couple of games and overall their offense has really sputtered scoring 70 points just once in seven Big East games. The Boatwright saga continues to be unresolved (what a mess, mom dumps boyfriend who proceeds to tell NCAA everything he knows out of spite toward her) and it could be right up until game Read more

Saturday NCAA Basketball Betting Preview: Michigan Wolverines at Arkansas Razorbacks

Michigan at Arkansas

Bud Walton Arena will be cranked up for this visit so the ascending Wolverines will need to overcome Arkansas significant emotional advantage. Michigan is in the flattest of flat spots here after defeating hated rival Michigan State 60-59 Tuesday night in an absolute nail biter. Getting up and putting forth an effort like that on the road versus a non-descript, non-conference foe is extremely improbable. That sets the table for a young Arkansas squad under first year head coach Mike Anderson and his relentless 94 foot pressure style. Michigan’s freshman point guard Trey Burke has passed nearly every test thus far but he did commit six turnovers against high octane Oakland and he’ll certainly be swarmed by defenders in this game. Michigan’s ability or inability to break the press will be key because they’ve got scorers who can do some damage. Defensively, Michigan head coach John Beilein has an opportunity to confound a Read more

Saturday NCAA Basketball Betting Preview: Maryland Terrapins at Temple Owls

Maryland at Temple

Game being played at The Palestra at 11 am local (ESPNU) which could add to the flat spot for Temple. Off of a tough three game Atlantic-10 stretch in which the Owls won as a +9.5 point underdog at St. Louis, came up short three days later at Richmond and then edged out Big Five rival LaSalle, it would be understandable if they weren’t fully focused. There is word that Temple’s starting center Michael Eric will return for this contest which means there could be some non-cohesive minutes when he is on the floor. It would be a great spot to gradually work Eric back into the rotation. If Temple is unaffected by the situational spot here, they could win this game easily because the fundamentals are all in their favor. Temple guards Ramon Moore and Khalif Wyatt are almost impossible to defend man-to-man and point guard Juan Fernadez is as smooth a leader as you’ll find. Maryland’s 5-11 point machine Terrell Stoglin is carrying Read more
