MLB Handicapper Free Play: Arizona Diamonbacks at Pittsburgh Pirates

08.09.2012     08:05 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona (Saunders) at Pittsburgh (Rodriguez) -125 O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

PNC Park has been a cash cow for UNDERS this season at 16-34-2 O/U. The Pirates had a big offensive surge from mid-June to mid-July that saw then average over six runs per game. They've since come back down to earth, averaging about four runs over their last 19 games. And during that stretch, the scores at PNC Park have been extremely low with outputs of 7, 6, 3, 2, 6, 5, 4, 14 and 13. Note that the last two games were aided by unearned runs and a few bullpen meltdowns. The lefty vs. lefty matchup at PNC Park is one that I have been consistently betting UNDER the last few years. Game 1 of this series featured southpaws Wade Miley and Erik Bedard and the end result was just four runs. Wandy Rodriguez has thrown back-to-back quality starts since coming over from Houston. I think his curveball is a good matchup against some of Arizona's dead fastball hitters. Joe Saunders continues to amaze despite marginal Read more

MLB Betting Trends: Mr. OVER Paul Emmel behind the plate in New York

08.08.2012     11:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Umpire Paul Emmel is behind the plate tonight in New York. In case you've been living under a rock, 20 of Emmel's 21 games have gone over the total. Those contests averaged 11.5 runs which is tops in the league. What's odd is that prior to this season, Emmel was technically an "under" ump. From 2009-11, Emmel's games were 39-48-5 O/U.

MLB Handicapping: Beckett ready to go, Red Sox cope with media circus

08.08.2012     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
No shortage of storylines in Boston these days. Where shall we start? How about Josh Beckett who was forced to skip his last start due to back stiffness. In the midst of explaining to the media that he's ready to pitch tonight, Beckett tried to shrug off questions about the team's alleged dysfunction.

“We traveled late in from New York (two nights before) and I didn't sleep particularly well, had a lot of anxiety and stress things going on, exterior distractions,” Beckett told WAAF. “I don’t think that a lot of it was great for my back. And going out and pitching on that mound, it was very wet, and my back just locked up on me."

On the notion that the Sox are like a dysfunctional family, Beckett insisted “it’s the exact opposite,” suggesting it is the media that creates that perception.

Then there are the struggles of Jon Read more

MLB Betting Trends: Warm weather and home runs helping totals go OVER

08.06.2012     07:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from FanGraphs on the recent surge of home runs. Note that totals for the entire season have trended UNDER (about 51%) but over the last month, OVERS are close to 55%.

And in terms of measuring the actual change in power, we need to adjust for the real significant change in baseball over the last 20 years – the continuing and increasing rate of strikeouts. K% is at an all-time high again this year, up a full point over last year’s record high. Now at 19.6%, the average strikeout rate in Major League Baseball is having a significant depressing effect on run scoring, and is the primary reason that league offense is still down despite the return of some home runs.

MLB Gambling News: Sale returns for White Sox, t-minus till his elbow falls off

08.06.2012     06:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas City (Mendoza) at Chicago WS (Sale) -220 O/U 8.5

We find it rather humorous to go back and revisit the timeline of the Chris Sale Project. Back in early May, he had a tender elbow and the White Sox decided it best to move him to the bullpen. That experiment lasted about two weeks. Next there was the reduction in sliders thrown. Then there were the now infamous late May/early June starts in which someone thought it would be wise to allow Sale to throw 115 and 119 pitches in back-to-back outings. So here we are on August 6 with Sale making his first start in nine days. Prior to the rest, Sale was smacked around in back-to-back games. And a Read more
