Tuesday MLB Betting Free Play: Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Blanton) -115 at NY Mets (Hefner) O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

The Mets and the Phillies are both for the MLB lead in Overs, each team cashing 29 so far this season.  Repeated bullpen meltdowns and a reasonably hot lineup have helped New York go 15-5-1 to the Over in its last 21 games.  That includes a 6-1-1 mark to the Over in their last eight at Citi Field; a park with a long term pitcher friendly reputation – the type of reputation that gives us a surprisingly low total to work with tonight.

The Phillies, too, are flying Over the total on a nightly basis.  They’ve pounded out 30 runs in their last five games (4-1 to the Over), including last night’s eight run outburst here in New York, enough to cash the Over in that game all by themselves.  Even the series history is all about Overs: 6-1 to the Over in the seven previous games between these two teams this year; 14-3-1 to the Over in 18 meetings against one another last Read more

Handicapper Teddy Covers talks NFL Regular Season Over/Under Win Totals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When I first moved to Las Vegas just prior to the start of the preseason in August 1998, NFL season win totals were just starting to pop up around town. By the early 2000’s, most sportsbooks in Vegas were posting NFL win totals by the time training camps opened in late July. Over the past five years, we’ve seen those NFL win totals get posted earlier and earlier – first early July, then June.

Here in 2012, the markets move earlier and more aggressively than ever. Some offshore sportsbooks posted win totals for the upcoming season within days of the Giants victory over the Patriots in the Super Bowl; albeit with very low limits. And here in Las Vegas, it was Christmas in May this past week when three major players – Cantor Gaming, MGM-Mirage and LVH – all released their 2012 NFL Regular Season Over/Under Win totals, with limits high enough to attract a nice chunk of wiseguy money.

Cantor was the first to market, and releasing their NFL win totals last Wednesday. As the first local shop to post numbers, with relatively high limits ($3K) that cater to sharp bettors, the action was fast and furious on the trading floor (or the betting Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Kansas City Royals at New York Yankees

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas City (Smith) at NY Yankees (Pettitte)
Recommendation: New York R/L -1.5

Andy Pettitte proved in his last outing that he’s still very capable of pitching at a high level, even on the wrong side of his 39th birthday.  Pettitte owned the Reds lineup, throwing eight innings of shutout four hit, nine strikeout ball.  Manager Joe Girardi following the vintage performance: “When I caught him, years and years ago, it was fastball, cutter and really curveball. He's got so many more weapons to go to. I thought he could bring some stabilization to our rotation. And I think he'll do that just because of who he is, his personality, his will, his focus. We are a different rotation with him."

KC can’t hit lefties, just 2-8 in their first ten games while hitting 20 points lower and scoring a full run per game less against opposing southpaw starters.  The Yankees don’t have that problem, hitting 20 points higher against lefties, with Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Texas Rangers at Seattle Mariners

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas (Harrison) -150 at Seattle (Noesi) O/U 7
Recommendation: Over

We’ve seen a deluge of Under money drive this total down from an opener of 8 all the way to 7.  I do not agree with the line move one iota, leaving us with some real value on the Over in Seattle this evening.

The Mariners have a well-deserved reputation as a light hitting team, but they’ve been tearing the cover off the ball offensively for nearly a week.  Seattle has pounded out 31 runs in their last five ballgames, scoring at least four in every contest.  Don’t expect that to change dramatically tonight against struggling Rangers starter Matt Harrison.  Harrison’s got a 7.48 ERA in four previous starts this month and only one quality start in his last five trips to the hill.

Texas got shut down by King Felix last night, ending a stretch of six consecutive games with at least four runs scored.  But the Rangers battered Mariners starter Hector Noesi for Read more

MLB Handicapper Notes: Pitching a mess for Milwaukee Brewers

05.21.2012     11:58 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While Cleveland and LA have been overachieving, the reigning National League Central champion Milwaukee Brewers have been awful, sitting in fifth place in arguably the weakest division in baseball.  The Brewers went 30-18 in one run games last year and had an MLB best 57-24 record at Miller Park –true home field dominance.  This year, they’re off to a sub .500 start at home while going a modest 6-6 through their first dozen one run decisions.  The betting markets weren’t high on this team coming into the campaign, lining a 96 win team from last year in the 84.5/85 range for 2012.  So far, the betting markets have been 100% correct in their negative assessment of Ron Roenike’s squad.

Milwaukee can’t blame injuries for their early season struggles.  The only significant injury they’ve suffered since opening day is shortstop Alex Gonzalez; a bottom of the order guy who’s bounced around to six different teams over the past seven seasons.   Their big bats are hitting – Ryan Braun and Cory Hart have 20 dingers between them and catcher Jonathan Lucroy enjoyed a breakout seven RBI game in his first Read more

MLB Gambling News and Notes: Cleveland Indians lead AL Central

05.21.2012     11:51 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Cleveland Indians were only a half-game behind the Detroit Tigers at the All-Star break last year, but unable to maintain their record during the second half.  The Tribe still finished in second place in the division at 80-82, but the betting markets didn’t expect much improvement here in 2012, lining the Indians right around 79 wins for the current campaign.  But Manny Acta’s squad has exceeded early season expectations – the Indians enter the new week in first place; 2.5 games ahead of the White Sox and three games ahead of Detroit.  They currently rank #6 in all of baseball in profitability.

Cleveland certainly can’t match LA’s star power, nor can they match the Dodgers attendance.  The Tribe rank dead last in fan support despite their hot start, drawing less than 16,000 attendees per game, while the Dodgers rank in the top quartile of the league, averaging more than 39,000 fans.  And the Tribe’s -4 run differential through the first quarter of the campaign is another bad sign, a clear indicator that they’ve overachieved.

Cleveland, like LA, has enjoyed the benefits of an easy early Read more

MLB Betting News: Los Angeles Dodgers have benefited from favorable schedule

05.21.2012     11:40 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The LA Dodgers have the best record in the major leagues; 28-13 through their first 41 games following their three game sweep over St. Louis this past weekend.  LA’s run differential (+45) ranks third in all of baseball, behind the aforementioned Cardinals and the Texas Rangers.  The Dodgers also rank #2 in baseball in profitability, behind only Baltimore; returning more than +13 units of profit for their supporters.  Let’s not forget that this team was lined right around the .500 mark (LA's season over/under win total for 2012 was between 80.5 and 81.5 games, depending on where you shopped) coming into the campaign following their tumultuous 82-79 season last year.

How has LA managed to accomplish this level of success thus far?  They’ve already lost a couple of key bats to injuries, most notably last year’s MVP runner-up Matt Kemp. Kemp is the team’s leader in home runs, batting average, runs scored and OPS and out with a lingering hamstring injury – ending MLB’s longest streak of consecutive games played.  Second baseman Mark Ellis underwent emergency surgery to remove pressure on his left leg Read more
