MLB Gambling News: Sale returns for White Sox, t-minus till his elbow falls off

08.06.2012     06:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Kansas City (Mendoza) at Chicago WS (Sale) -220 O/U 8.5

We find it rather humorous to go back and revisit the timeline of the Chris Sale Project. Back in early May, he had a tender elbow and the White Sox decided it best to move him to the bullpen. That experiment lasted about two weeks. Next there was the reduction in sliders thrown. Then there were the now infamous late May/early June starts in which someone thought it would be wise to allow Sale to throw 115 and 119 pitches in back-to-back outings. So here we are on August 6 with Sale making his first start in nine days. Prior to the rest, Sale was smacked around in back-to-back games. And a Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toronto (Laffey) at Oakland (Milone) -160 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Under

It has been a wild series in Oakland with the last two games lasting a combined 26 innings. And if it weren't a for a 2-out 9th inning home run, we'd been looking at three straight unders. That is the way I'm going to look this afternoon with Aaron Laffey and Tommy Milone on the hill. Laffey has been pretty decent at times this year. He added a cutter to his repertoire and while still not ideal for the American League East, I think he'll be a good fit for this ball park.  Milone has had back-to-back starts vs. Tampa and Toronto in which he got smacked around some (13 IP, 10 ER). He's a big home/road split guy and the outing against the Rays marked the first time all season he allowed more than 2 runs at home. I do have some concern about the health of the bullpens but I think both pitches are capable of reaching the 6th inning and beyond. We also have a long term UNDER umpire in Phil Cuzzi who with his crew are Read more

MLB Gambling Free Play: Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds

Pittsburgh (McDonald) at Cincinnati (Leake) -130 O/U 9
Recommendation: Cincinnati

Pittsburgh's James McDonald was at one point sitting with a 2.19 ERA which for his stuff, simply could not be maintained. He may be going through a bit of a dead arm period with four consecutive rough outings (20.2 IP, 19 BB, 6 HR, 8.71 ERA). The tell-tale sign something isn’t right is the walks. Normally a strike thrower, McDonald has had real difficulty with his command and as a result, cannot be trusted. Mike Leake's season started out rough as his ERA sat 5.47 at the end of May. But he turned the corner and over his last 11 outings shows a 3.71 ERA. He's been a little shaky of late (see: 5 ERs in 1.2 IP vs. San Diego) but this is a good opportunity for a bounce back effort – Leake has a solid track record vs. the Pirates (8 starts, 3.16 ERA). Starting pitcher in better form, the stronger offense, and reasonable price put us on the Reds.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals

Texas (Harrison) -175 at Kansas City (Guthrie) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

The Rangers went Over the total by themselves on Wednesday in their wild 11-10 thriller over the Angels.  They did it again last night, pounding out 15 runs against LA.  Big boppers Josh Hamilton, Elvis Andrus and Michael Young have all hit their way out of slumps during this span, putting the highest scoring team in the majors right back on track offensively after their post- All Star break doldrums.

That’s bad news for KC starter Jeremy Guthrie, who has been nothing short of awful this year.  Guthrie is 0-8 with a 7.76 ERA in his last 13 starts, including 0-2, 9.58 ERA since being traded to KC.  With 24 home runs allowed in just 101 innings of work, a hot night in Missouri (heat index of 102) isn’t likely to help him cool off the hottest lineup in the majors.

But KC is hitting these days, pounding out 26 runs in their last four ballgames; at least five in Read more

MLB Betting Free Pick: Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit (Verlander) -130 at Boston (Beckett) O/U 8
Recommendation: Detroit

Josh Beckett is still being priced like a front-of-the-rotation starter, despite the fact that he’s been largely ineffective since coming off the DL in June.  The Red Sox are just 1-7 in Beckett’s last eight trips to the hill.  In four July starts, opponents are hitting .330 against him and he’s got a 6.38 ERA.

Facing the potent Tigers lineup certainly isn’t a recipe for an immediate turnaround. Beckett’s faced them twice already this year and he got shelled both times: 11 earned runs, including five homers, on 17 hits in just 11.2 innings of work.  Boston lost those two games by a combined margin of 17-3.

Beckett ‘s recent quote doesn’t sound too confident, bad news for any starting hurler.  "Obviously the results aren't what Read more
