College Basketbal Betting Free Play: Cal State Northridge Matadors at UC Santa Barbara Gauchos

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cal State Northridge at UC Santa Barbara -1.5
Recommendation: Santa Barbara

Cal State Northridge got off to a 6-0 start this year, all against lined, DI opponents.  It didn’t end there.  The Matadors hung tough with BYU in Provo and won SU at Utah and put together a furious rally to nearly upset a solid Hawaii team in Honolulu in their conference opener.  Then the bottom dropped out.

Northridge has opened up Big West play by losing each of their first seven games.  Their last pointspread cover came in that aforementioned loss at Hawaii, dropping each of their last six games ATS as well; consistently overvalued by the betting markets after that hot start.

The Matadors have two major weaknesses. First, they are as young as any team in all of DI basketball.  Head coach Bobby Braswell: “Our young guys are going through a stretch that has been very difficult. The freshmen are struggling a bit. Their numbers are going down. It's the rigors of a long season. We warned them this would happen.”

Northridge’s second weakness is their defense, or lack thereof.  In conference Read more

College Basketball Gambling Free Pick: Virginia Cavaliers at Virginia Tech Hokies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia at Virginia Tech +5.5
Recommendation: Virginia Tech

Although the early money has come in support of Virginia, not sure I share that same enthusiasm. UVA on the road has not been a bankroll builder thus far as they failed outright as -5 at Wake Forest and were dismantled by 15 at Clemson. Their exceptional prowess on defense is fiercely combatted by their one trick pony offense. Virginia’s pedestrian attack which has little in the way of penetrating rim attackers and inside post presence depends much too heavily on three point shooting. That long range success has not traveled with them in ACC play shooting less than 30% in each of their road games. With no other matchup being problematic, expect Virginia Tech to focus on defending the arc here. Offensively the Hokies will likely find the going tough but they have the best scorer on the floor in senior guard Erick Greene (24.6 ppg). Coleman Coliseum will provide a raucous environment tonight Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Arizona should have rebounding advantage vs. UCLA

01.24.2013     07:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UCLA at Arizona -8.5 O/U 147

What takes place in the paint should have a big impact in the outcome of tonight's UCLA-Arizona matchup. The Bruins have size but aren't particularly physical and as a result are -3.5 in rebounding margin through six conference games. Arizona has outrebounded 14 of its 17 opponents. According to Ken Pom, UCLA ranks 11th in the PAC-12 in offensive rebounding percentage (26.9) and 10th in offensive rebounding defense (34.2). Arizona meanwhile ranks second and first, respectively, in both categories.

“They’re an even better rebounding team than Oregon,” UCLA coach Ben Howland said of the Wildcats in his weekly news conference. “That’s a real wake-up call for us.”

“I think we’re going to try to feed it into Kaleb and also Brandon, try to use our big guys the Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Pick: Texas A&M Aggies at LSU Tigers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas A&M +1 at LSU
Recommendation: Texas A&M

LSU is an injury riddled mess right now, and their home court isn’t strong enough to overcome their many weaknesses.  The Tigers will be without starting guard Corban Collins tonight (concussion), and may not have senior guard Charles Carmouche either (knee).  That leaves a team with very limited depth severely depleted tonight.

LSU head coach Johnny Jones: “We'll have to use our timeouts in a fashion so our guys can have an opportunity to get breaks with a short bench. One thing we don't want them to do is rest on the floor and take plays off. That's very dangerous at this level. That's something that we're conscious of with the depletion.”  Don’t expect the Tigers to have timeouts left for the latter stages of the game here, a big disadvantage in this pick ‘em game.

The Tigers are the lone remaining winless team in SEC Conference play for Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Notre Dame continues pointspread slide

01.22.2013     01:52 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish made it four straight disappointing performances with a dismal 63-47 home loss to the Georgetown Hoyas Monday night in a game many of you watched on ESPN. TV generally doesn’t talk about pointspreads. Here’s a quick look at what Notre Dame has done against expectations during this four-game slump.

Notre Dame (-8.5) lost to Connecticut 65-58 (missed by 15.5)

Notre Dame (-7) lost to St. John’s 67-63 (missed by 11)

Notre Dame (-11.5) barely beat Rutgers 69-66 (missed by 8.5)

Notre Dame (-6) lost to Georgetown 63-47 (missed by 22)

Notre Dame’s strength of schedule pre-conference was fairly weak. The media ranked them based on their won-lost record…because it takes longer than five seconds to look up a schedule and nobody has time for that when they’re all so busy fact-checking their feature stories.

In those four games above, the Irish are playing at nothing resembling Dance Read more

College Basketball Betting: Market looks to fade Missouri Tigers

01.22.2013     12:04 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
South Carolina at- Missouri- -13.5 O/U 142

Off a 31-point loss at Florida, Missouri will try to regroup tonight in Columbia against visiting South Carolina. The Tigers have been hit hard by injuries; Laurence Bowers (knee) and Keion Bell (ankle) are both doubtful while Earnest Ross (back) is questionable. That's three of Missouri's top four players in terms of possessions used. And then head coach Frank Haith is dealing with potential NCAA violations stemming from his time at Miami. Bettors were quick to show their support for the Gamecocks with the line bet down from an opener of -15.5 to -13.5.
