Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL Conference Championship matchups are set

01.12.2015     07:52 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL has never embraced the Final Four moniker, but that’s exactly what we’ve got left in this NFL season.  Four teams.  Three remaining meaningful games (sorry, I’m not counting the pro bowl as meaningful, even if you choose to wager on it).  One champion, yet to be crowned.

And there’s one strong commonality among the four teams still standing after two weekends of NFL Playoff action.   Each of the four teams still standing is there because of their quarterback.  As the league has adjusted their rules year by year, making it more difficult to defend the passing game, the very best QB’s have taken advantage of those rule changes, making them nearly impossible to defend.

Bettors probably remember the Patriots gameplan when they travelled to Indy in Week 11; one of four games this year where the Pats were installed as underdogs by the betting markets.  Bill Belichick installed a radically different gameplan than most Pats fans (and their betting supporters) were used to.  New England played for extended stretches with six offensive linemen in power rushing formations, finishing the game with Read more

NFL Betting: Rodgers dealing with calf issues, bettors jump on Dallas

01.08.2015     02:02 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Screw the weather! Is Aaron Rodgers going to healthy enough to play? Probably but due to what they are calling a "slight calf tear" Rodgers is not expected to be 100 percent for Sunday's playoff game vs. Dallas. Perhaps connected, the Packers just dropped from -6 to -5.5.

"There's no question he will play, but there's also no question he will not be 100 percent," said one doctor familiar with the injury. "The question is whether he'll be 95 percent or 50 percent."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Top Super Bowl contenders all have flaws

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re down to a dirty dozen in the NFL, as 20 of the 32 teams saw their seasons come to a close at the conclusion of another wild and wacky Week 17.  In my Wiseguy Reports over the past two weeks, I’ve been poking holes in the fringe contenders in both conferences.  This week, I’m going to put the four favorites under the microscope.  Guess what – all four are potentially vulnerable to an upset.

Let me start with the defending champs, the Seattle Seahawks.  When Pete Carroll built up his program at USC, the Trojans weren’t a one-and-done type squad for titles -- they were in the mix year after year under his tutelage.  They played fast, they played loose – never tense or uptight -- and they consistently played their very best football down the stretch.

Seattle did just that down the stretch last year.  And they’ve certainly done that this year; going 6-0 SU and ATS since their loss at Kansas City back in Week 11.  But before we anoint the Seahawks as the first repeat Super Bowl champs since the Patriots did it following the 2004 campaign, we’ve got to put this team under the Read more

College Basketball Betting: Arizona State makes lineup changes

12.23.2014     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following back-to-back losses including a triple OT affair at home against Lehigh, Arizona State's Herb Sendek says lineup changes are coming. The Sun Devils play host to Detroit this afternoon.

"We're going with a lineup that we believe gives us a high-energy quotient and has the potential to be a good defensive unit," said Sendek, adding that his overall rotation could tighten as well. (He played 11 in the first seven minutes of the Lehigh loss.)

"We have too many breakdowns," Sendek said. "Sometimes the players themselves think they're coming out because they made a turnover, but (often) it's for defensive assignments. We just got to do a much better job."

College Football Gambling: Duke seeks first bowl win since 1961

12.23.2014     06:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Now that Duke is a regular participant in the postseason, the next step is coming away with a victory. Two years ago they went toe-to-toe with Cincinnati but fell apart late in one of the worst bad beats in recent sports betting history. Last season, they snagged the pointspread cover but again came up short to Texas A&M and Johnny Football, 52-48. The Blue Devils will play the role of underdog again with Arizona State currently a 7.5-point favorite for Saturday's Sun Bowl.

“It’s huge,” senior quarterback Anthony Boone said. “It’s not about checking anything off the list, it’s about ending our season with a bang, ending our season with 10 wins — against a top-25 team — and getting a bowl championship. That’s really what it comes down to: This game is a championship game, so we at the end of that game, we want to be able to stand on that podium and hold up a trophy.”

Chris Christie and Adam Silver could team up to fight for legalized sports betting

12.22.2014     01:47 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Montana and Rice. Jordan and Pippen. Lewis and Clark. Christie and Silver? If it means progress toward legalized sports betting then count us in.

“Governor Christie, and I'm happy to join him, should turn his attention to Washington, DC, to Congress, and say, ‘Here are all the reasons it should be regulated, but let's come up with a framework that makes sense on a national basis presumably that would allow states to opt in,’ ” Silver told ESPN’s Andy Katz.

“Estimates are that it's up to $400 billion a year. And my view is, if it's going to go on, let's make it transparent, let's bring it into the sunlight, so to speak, and let's regulate it, the same way we do a lot of other industries,” he said.

NFL Gambling Alert: Bears go back to the well with Cutler

12.22.2014     12:44 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A week removed from getting benched for Jimmy Clausen, Jay Cutler has regained his starting spot -- albeit in de facto fashion. Clausen suffered a concussion in Sunday's loss to Detroit. The Bears (+6.5/+7) close the year at Minnesota.

“Jay gives us the best chance this week. So that’s why he’ll be out there,” Trestman said, via ESPNChicago.com. “Jay said ‘I’ll be ready to go.’ He empathizes with what Jimmy had gone through last night. He’s ready to go. He’ll be in this afternoon to get started.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: AFC Playoff Contenders

12.22.2014     10:09 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Week 16 of the NFL season is in the books and four teams have emerged as clear co-favorites to win the Super Bowl.  Green Bay and Seattle are at the top of the power ratings spectrum in the NFC while Denver and New England look poised for a rematch from last year in the AFC Championship Game.

Last week in this space, I poked holes in the NFC contenders, explaining why every other live team in the playoff race had at least one fundamental flaw primed to doom their chances in January.  This week, I’m going to point the magnifying glass towards the seven fringe contenders in the AFC.  Can any of them knock off the Patriots in Foxboro or the Broncos in Denver when January rolls around?  Read on to find out.

The Houston Texans remain one of five teams still fighting for the final two playoff spots in the AFC after knocking off the Ravens on Sunday.  But if the Texans do manage to sneak into the postseason with a Wild Card berth, I’m not expecting them to do any damage.

Houston’s defense ranks among the league’s elite, as we clearly saw once again this past weekend.  But the Texans average Read more

NFL Handicapping: Playoff scenarios as of 12-22-2014

12.22.2014     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's that time of year where bettors are actually interested in postseason implications. With one week to go in the NFL regular season, there is still plenty to be hashed out. Heading into tonight's Monday Night Football game we know that the Patriots, Broncos, Colts, and Steelers are in the AFC playoffs. In the NFC, the Seahawks, Lions, Cowboys, Packers, and Cardinals are all in. The Saints, Eagles, and Bills have been eliminated. The Bengals and Chargers are both in "win and you're in" situations. And whoever wins Sunday's Carolina-Atlanta game wins the NFC South. For more details on these playoff scenarios, click here.
