NBA Betting Update: Suns' situation goes from bad to indescribably horrific

01.04.2016     09:02 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Oh, man. The 76ers, Kings, Bulls...they got NOTHING on the Phoenix Suns. This is one hell of a dumpster fire and no one seems to be wanting to use a fire extinguisher. They've lost nine straight including a 142-119 loss to Sacramento and last night's 97-77 loss to the Lakers. Maybe 9 of their next 11 against the Eastern Conference will help. Or maybe not considering Indiana (twice), Boston, Atlanta, Miami, and Cleveland are all well above .500. Next up is a home tilt vs. Charlotte on Wednesday.

“When Ls keep getting piled on top of you, it’s like more weight on your back,” Price said. “We need a win to get that weight off of our back.”

Cactus Bowl Betting Preview: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

01.01.2016     08:57 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cactus Bowl - Phoenix, AZ
West Virginia vs. Arizona State
Saturday, January 2, 7:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Arizona State -1 O/U 66.5
CRIS Current: West Virginia -1.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Arizona State

West Virginia is not exempt from the list of teams having to deal with starting personnel losses as All-Big XII first-team junior CB Daryl Worley and freshman WR Jovon Durante are out of this contest due to academics. Each has played in all 12 games this season and their absence figures to be felt. Worley (6 INTs, 12 pass break ups) is the Mountaineers best cover man which will test the coverage depth of their secondary. ASU quarterback Mike Bercovici (26 TD, 9 INT) has spread the ball around to a six player arsenal this season including running backs who have all caught between 24-54 passes. ASU can attack on all levels from horizontal to deep vertical which will make this difficult for West Virginia’s pass defense. Pressure from their defensive line against the Arizona State front that allowed 39 sacks this year will be crucial for WVA. The Sun Devils are extremely balanced with their Read more

NFL Gambing Preview: Detroit Lions at Chicgo Bears

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit at Chicago
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Chicago -1.5 O/U 46.5
CRIS Current: Chicago -1 O/U 46
Recommendtion: Detroit

The Lions are 5-2 since their 1-7 start.  Two of their losses were complete screw jobs. Aaron Rodgers Hail Mary pass to beat them following a tough penalty call on the previous play was brutal.  So was their loss at Seattle, with a dubious non-call at the goal line in the final seconds on Monday Night Football.  Overall, Detroit is a better team than their record would indicate.  That’s not the case for the Bears.

Detroit has gotten much, much better since offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi was fired mid-season, replaced by Jim Bob Cooter.  It’s surely worth noting that Matthew Stafford has a 16-2 TD-INT ratio and a 108.7 QB rating since Cooter took over, in sharp contrast to his 13-11 TD-INT ratio and his 84.1 QB rating under Lombardi.

The Lions have won on the road at Green Bay and New Orleans; a veteran team capable of taking care of business in hostile environments.  And frankly, I’m not Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Narrowing down the Super Bowl 50 contenders

12.28.2015     08:43 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This is my last Wiseguy Report of the year.  That leaves me with two choices – a look back column or a look forward one. I’m a big fan of post-mortems following every NFL betting week; looking to learn from both winners and losers.  But when it comes to looking back over a whole season or a full year?  It’s harder (for me at least) to learn lessons in the aggregate; much easier when I condense those lessons down to individual games.

After all, that’s what a season is – dozens of individual betting decisions; made one at a time.  So, while I’ve enjoyed one of the best NFL seasons of my handicapping career, there’s no point in looking back.

Sure, we can identify the worst beat of the year, that’s always fun.  I’d nominate anyone who had Lions and Under when they led Green Bay wire-to-wire on Thursday Night Football….until Aaron Rodgers Hail Mary touchdown pass with no time left on the clock that turned Lions and Under into Packers and Over.  Apologies to anyone who had St Louis plus the points at Green Bay in Week 5, a close second on my list.  But the better way Read more

NBA Handicapping: Phoenix Suns on the brink of imploding following loss to 76ers

12.28.2015     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Phoenix Suns (12-20) have lost six of their last seven including an embarrassing 111-104 home loss to Philadelphia on Saturday. Head coach Jeff Hornacek managed to keep his job but a couple of assistants were shown the door. The Suns play host to Cleveland tonight as +8.5 underdogs.

"Pretty embarrassing, point blank, period," Suns forward P.J. Tucker told the Arizona Republic on Saturday night.

"If something doesn't change quick, it could get really ugly, really fast."

"Obviously, it's probably a low point for us," Hornacek told reporters after the game. "Now the confidence is lacking."

GoDaddy.com Bowl Betting Preview: Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Bowling Green Falcons

GoDaddy.com Bowl - Mobile, AL
Georgia Southern vs. Bowling Green
Wednesday, December 23, 5 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Bowling Green -7  O/U 65
CRIS Current: Bowling Green -7 O/U 63.5
Recommendation: Georgia Southern

This year’s GoDaddy.com Bowl in will feature the contrasting styles of Bowling Green and Georgia Southern. The Falcons boast one of the most potent passing games in the country with MAC Offensive Player of the Year Matt Johnson throwing to a foursome of receivers that caught a combined 294 passes.  The polar opposite will take place for Georgia Southern as the Eagles led the nation with 355.6 ypg on the ground at nearly 6.5 ypc.

Both teams must deal with the exit of their head coach as BG’s Dino Babers took off for Syracuse and GSU’s Willie Fritz made the odd choice to take over at Tulane. Dell McGee (former running backs coach) will call the shots for Georgia Southern and Brian Ward (former defensive coordinator) will do the same for Bowling Green.

It’s generally understood that Bowling Green will move the ball through the Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Sportsbooks get crushed in Week 15

12.21.2015     09:55 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sportsbooks around Las Vegas reported shorter lines and reduced handle on Sunday.  Bettors around town were short on cash due to the holidays, but also due to the fact that the books beat the public over the first two weeks of December.  But that certainly wasn’t the case this week!

On Sunday, just about every major NFL decision went in favor of the bettors, not the house, and the books took an absolute beating.  Public favorites cashed in game after game.  The Patriots covered -14.5 against the Titans.  The Seahawks covered -14.5 against the Browns.  The Packers covered -4 against the Raiders.  Most Steelers bettors cashed when Pittsburgh rallied to win by a TD, even though the line closed at -7.5 in many locations.  The Chargers beat up on Miami.  And Arizona hammered Philly on Sunday Night.  The only major decision that went in favor of the house was when the Giants stormed back from a four TD deficit to cover the spread against Carolina.

These quotes from Matt Youmans' excellent article in the Las Vegas Review Journal tell the story from the bookmaker perspective.  William Hill sportsbook director Read more

NBA Handicapping: Golden State Warriors in revenge mode vs. Milwaukee

12.18.2015     10:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After winning and justifiably celebrating their win over Golden State, the Milwaukee Bucks are apparently in the Warriors' crosshairs as the two teams meet again in Oakland tonight. Oddsmakers and the betting markets aren't messing around with Golden State opening -18 and bet up to -19 across the board.

"Oh, it was a nice celebration. We do remember that stuff," reigning MVP Stephen Curry said Wednesday night after a 128-103 win over the Phoenix Suns. "We were kind of laughing at some of the stuff going on. It was a big game for them. Friday will be a big game for us."

"There's nothing wrong with the dunk, but the stare-down, trying to talk nasty in the game like that," Thompson said. "And it's like, 'All right, you're going to see us next Friday and in our building, too.'"

NFL Handicapping: Vikings dealing with cluster injuries on defense

12.17.2015     07:23 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A bunch of injuries to be aware of for the Minnesota Vikings defense heading into Sunday's game vs. Chicago. Minnesota is currently a -5.5 favorite with a total of 43.

Three starters were held out of practice Wednesday: defensive tackle Linval Joseph (foot), linebacker Anthony Barr (groin/hand) and defensive end Everson Griffen (shoulder). Griffen's injury had not previously been reported. Eight defensive players appeared on the injury report, including five starters.
