NFL Handicapping: Tennessee Titans fire Ken Whisenhunt

11.03.2015     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
College coaches, NFL one is safe these days. The Tennessee Titans fired Ken Whisenhunt following the team's 1-6 start. Whisenhunt was 3-20 SU during his tenure. The Titans are a semi-respectable 3-4 ATS and have been outgained by 0.4 yards per play. Mike Mularkey will serve as interim head coach.

We saw Miami bounce back with a strong effort following the firing of Joe Philbin. Tennessee's situation though is a bit different as the Dolphins had a bye week to adjust whereas Tennessee has a game this week and uncertainty at the quarterback position with Marcus Mariota (knee) questionable.

For Sunday, the Titans travel to New Orleans. There is no line on the game due to Mariota's questionable status.

NFL Gambling Preview: San Diego Chargers at Baltimore Ravens

San Diego at Baltimore
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Baltimore -4.5 O/U 50
CRIS Current: Baltimore -3.5 O/U 51
Recommendation: Over

We’ve got a classic recipe for an Over in Baltimore on Sunday, in a matchup of two very weak defenses against two quality opposing quarterbacks.  With both teams struggling mightily – a combined 3-11 SU this year, with two of the three wins coming against equally hapless foes from Cleveland and Detroit – we can expect both coaches to pull out every trick from their playbook in an effort to stem the losing tide.  Even with light rain forecast in Baltimore for Sunday, temperatures will be mild and the wind isn’t expected to be a factor – a light shower or two isn’t going to doom our chances to cash this bet.

Both defenses are truly bottom of the barrel.  The Ravens defense has lost every bit of leadership they had following the retirements of Ray Lewis and Ed Reed along with Terrell Suggs’ season ending injury.  Over the last few weeks, Colin Kaepernick and Josh McCown both had their best game of Read more

NFL Gambling Alert: Roethlisberger expected to start vs. Bengals

10.28.2015     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
According to reports, Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger (knee) is expected to start Sunday's home game against division rival Cincinnati. He missed the last four games of which the Steelers went 2-2 (2-1-1 ATS). The Bengals opened -3 but were bet down to -1.5 following the announcement.

"We don't have any reservations or limitations about his ability," coach Mike Tomlin told reporters Tuesday. "As I sit here today, we're comfortable where he is in his overall ability. We're going to need him, obviously."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Breaking down the NFL's five unbeatens

10.26.2015     07:59 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
We’re nearing the halfway point of the NFL season and five teams still remain undefeated; an unusually high number of perfect teams at this stage of the campaign.  There’s not much debate with the betting community about how to rank the five remaining unbeatens.  The New England Patriots are power rated at least a field goal higher than any other team in the league right now.  Behind the Pats come the Green Bay Packers, followed closely by the Cincinnati Bengals.  The Denver Broncos rank #4 on this list; with Peyton Manning’s ongoing struggles carrying more weight than the Broncos elite level defensive stats in the current betting markets.  Last on the list is the Carolina Panthers, still searching for market respect even after their win and cover against the Eagles on Sunday Night Football.

My goal of this week’s Wiseguy Report is to break down these five teams in terms of my probability of them producing a profit over the final ten weeks of the regular season.  Is it possible to make money with ANY of these teams moving forward, or have the betting markets eclipsed any semblance of future value?  Read on to find Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: New York Jets at New England Patriots

NY Jets at New England
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
New England -9.5 O/U 49
CRIS Current: New England -7.6 O/U 47.5
Recommendation: New York

The Patriots remarkable pointspread success has forced the betting markets to adjust.  Even after getting backdoored with a late TD by the Colts last week; costing New England backers their wagers, the Pats still remain the single most public team in the NFL – the defending Super Bowl champ that’s come out of the gate looking every bit as potent here in 2015.  That has left sportsbooks no choice but to bump up the number to support New England week after week; a point or two of Patriots' tax that leaves at least a little bit of added value on the opposing side every week.

But before we anoint the Patriots as repeat champions, let’s note that they’ve only beaten one team with a winning record all year – the Steelers; on opening day, when Pittsburgh was missing several key pieces of their top flight skill position talent.  The Pats failed to cover the spread in that game as well, and they were outgained by Read more

NY Jets at New England
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
New England -9.5 O/U 49
CRIS Current: New England -8.5 O/U 47.5
Recommendation: New York

Surprising start by the Jets has made this a meaningful early season matchup with first place in the AFC East at stake. Each is already 1-0 against division foes and each ranks as the NFL’s #1 team in opposite categories. New York is tops in average points allowed (15.0 ppg) while the Patriots are #1 in average points scored (36.6 ppg). Adding to the positive differences between these teams is that fact that Football Outsiders website ranks New England as the #1 run blocking offensive line in the league and the Jets as the #1 pass protecting line. The contrasts make handicapping the fundamental aspects of this game extremely important but there are situational and historical angles that are relevant here too. Weather does not figure to be a factor in Foxboro this Sunday.

The Jets stingy defense gained some more strength when DT Sheldon Richardson returned from his suspension last week. Now in his second week of Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: A look back and NFL Week 6

10.19.2015     08:29 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers blog entry.
Week 6 of the NFL is in the rear view mirror as the 2015 regular season approaches the halfway point.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’ll look to answer three questions that stood out to me following Sunday’s action.

How good are the Jets?
In the midst of a season where there don’t appear to be a whole host of elite Super Bowl contenders, the Jets 4-1 start has bettors and pundits taking notice.  The Patriots, Bengals and Packers are the clear Top 3 teams in any reasonable set of NFL power ratings.  There’s a legitimate argument to be made that the Jets could be #4 on that list, ahead of or equal to other hot start teams like the Cardinals, Falcons or Panthers.

The Jets won only four games last year; their fourth consecutive non-winning season.  With Todd Bowles as the new head coach, New York was lined as a 7.5 win team here in 2015 in the offseason betting markets.  The training camp injury to Geno Smith left Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starting quarterback; a switch that the betting markets didn’t react to very much.  But Fitzpatrick has been a difference maker for New Read more
