NBA Gambling: Bettors cash in big on Golden State's blowout win

06.12.2015     07:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Holy Cow That Line Can't Be Right side was the Never In Doubt side as Golden State's turned in a 21-point, Game 4 victory last night and made a lot of bettors happy. After being outplayed for a good portion of the first three games, the Warriors opened -2.5 for Game 4. After being bet up to -3, Cleveland money pushed the line back to -2.5. But then came the steam. Yesterday afternoon, Golden State money started to pour in and didn't stop as the line at CRIS peaked at -4.5 (-119) 45 minutes per tip.

With the series tied 2-2, the adjusted series price has jumped from Golden State -115 to -400. The Warriors are currently -8.5 home favorites for Sunday's Game 5.

Bettors holding on to American Pharoah tickets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Of the over 94,000 $2 win tickets placed on American Pharoah to win the Belmont Stakes roughly 95% haven't been cashed as bettors have chosen to keep it as a souvenir. Those who did cash their tickets took home $3.50. A quick Google search showed that an uncashed ticket from Secretariat's famous Belmont win in 1973 goes for around $500.

MLB Handicapping: Betting pitchers after a no-hitter

06.11.2015     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We used to keep track of performances following a perfect game or no-hitter but quit doing so due to the lack of any substantial trend. FanGraphs dug even deeper as we await Chris Heston's next start following Tuesday's no-hitter. Statistically, there is no consistent drop-off in a pitcher's next start or the remainder of the season. In fact, of the last three no-hitters (Beckett, Kershaw, and Lincecum) the following start resulted in only two combined earned runs out of the trio. The one trend that stands out, which makes perfect sense, is the ultra-high pitch counts. In Heston's case, he needed a modest 110 pitches which shouldn't be cause for concern. He's slated to face Arizona at home on Sunday.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Bettors discuss potential impact of new PAT rule

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NFL has evolved into the most popular sport for both fans and bettors over the last half century in part because of it’s unpredictability.  The old saying attributed to NFL Commissioner Bert Bell (1945-1959), ‘On any given Sunday, any team in the NFL can beat any other team' has proven true over the years, even in the modern era.

In September alone last year, the Dolphins upset the Patriots, the Titans won at Kansas City, the Chargers beat the Seahawks, the Bears beat the 49ers, the Bucs beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh and the Chiefs whipped the Patriots.  Each and every one of those games was a significant upset both SU and ATS.

Fans and bettors alike are quite comfortable watching a two-foot putt in golf, or free throw attempts in the NBA; not exactly the most exciting plays that either sport has to offer. The NFL has boring plays as well, most notably the extra point try.  NFL teams made their extra points more than 99% of the time last year, not exactly the essence of drama.

The league, in their infinite wisdom, just decided that the NFL extra point try was too boring.  Instead of doing it the way it’s Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: St. Louis Cardinals at New York Mets

St. Louis (Lackey) at New York (Harvey) -126 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: New York

Considering Matt Harvey missed all of last season I'd say he's exceeded expectations in 2015. Through seven starts Harvey has produced a stellar 47-7 K-to-BB ratio to go with a 2.31 ERA. I noticed that Harvey has been pretty judicious about using his slider thus far following last year's arm surgery. Prior to his last start he used it only about 10% of the time. Against the Cubs, Harvey threw it 20% of the time and he tied his season-best with 9 strikeouts and posted a season-best 17 swinging strikes. It's scary to think he's still "rounding into form." John Lackey has been solid this season but simply doesn't stack up to Harvey. Lackey's K-rate is currently a career-low 6.04 per 9 and he's been pretty fortunate with the long ball having allowed only 2 in 44.2 innings. This is also a tough spot for the Cards having played late last night on ESPN. Two weeks ago the Yankees capped off a sweep of the Red Sox on Sunday night and looked sluggish the following night in a 3-1 loss as Toronto. Same deal for Kansas City who off an extra inning win over Detroit got blitzed Read more

NBA Gambling: Rockets rally past Clippers, force improbable Game 7

05.15.2015     07:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
How many of you saw this coming? Left for dead following back-to-back blowout losses, the Houston Rockets took advantage of one of the biggest meltdowns in postseason history and find themselves a home game away from reaching the Western Conference Finals. The Rockets somehow outscored the Clippers 40-15 in the fourth quarter last night. It puts bettors is a difficult position for Sunday's Game 7. The markets still feel LA is the better team, hence the -1.5/-2 road chalk price. But how do you bounce back from having an 19-point lead late in the third quarter...on your home floor? The in-game line line history from that game was absolutely crazy. At their peak, the Clips were -17.5 whereas the last line on Houston was -14.5.

“We never stopped believing,” Dwight Howard said after his 20 point, 21 rebound performance. “Our faith was tested all night, as it has been all series, but we kept it together.”

“We were trying to run the clock out, and we stopped playing, and

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Wizards and Grizzlies have been postseason ATS darlings

05.11.2015     08:27 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The 2014 NBA Playoffs were something of an exception to the rule, because there were no red hot pointspread runs to open the playoffs.  In most years, one or two teams stand out as postseason pointspread overachievers as the playoffs begin.  This year, for example, we’ve got two of them – the Memphis Grizzlies and the Washington Wizards, a combined 12-3 ATS through the first two rounds.

I first really began paying serious attention to this phenomenon in 2009, when the Denver Nuggets opened up the playoffs on a 12-0 ATS run (11-0-1 ATS for some).  My clients and I were onboard for 11 of those 12 ATS victories; and I vowed to look for and find similar teams in the future – teams that hit their stride in late April after being widely overlooked by both bookmakers and bettors at the start of the postseason for whatever reason.

In 2010, Orlando swept their first two opponents in the playoffs, going 7-0-1 ATS in the process. The Phoenix Suns were also major moneymakers, going 8-2 ATS before running into the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals.  2011 saw the Dallas Mavericks open up the playoffs by cashing at a Read more

NHL Playoffs Handicapper Free Play: Montreal Canadiens at Tampa Bay Lightning

Montreal at Tampa Bay -145 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Tampa Bay stole two games on the road against the Montreal Canadiens and they look to further dominate the Habs on home ice in Game 3 tonight.  In what was an anomaly of a game on Sunday where the Lightning won 6-2, tonight should get back to the low scoring affairs these two teams are accustomed to.  Tampa has owned this matchup this entire season as it continues to frustrate the Canadians from an offensive standpoint.  Ben Bishop has been tremendous in net for Tampa as he's posted a 1.71 GAA in the postseason and you can expect much of the same from both he and Carey Price tonight.  Both teams have struggled overall during the postseason on the power play.  The Canadians are just 1 for 26 on the man advantage and Tampa Bay was 0 for 23 on the PP before their 4 goal PP performance on Sunday.  A change in scenery should benefit the tight checking style as it has always proven beneficial to play Unders in the third game of a playoff series.  Sunday's 6-2 game was an outlier so expect a close defensive battle tonight in Tampa Bay.
