College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Arizona State Sun Devils at Colorado Buffaloes

Arizona State at Colorado -7.5 O/U 144.5
Recommendation: Colorado

In the not so distant future, Bobby Hurley will have Arizona State as a contender in the PAC-12. But it's pretty apparent that he and his current squad have tuned one another out. For starters, with two weeks to go in the season, Andre Spight decided to leave the program. It marked yet another player issue as injuries, suspensions, and now a departure have marred what was once a promising season (10-3 start). As for the play on the court, check out ASU's last three games: Lose by 13 at home to fellow bottom feeder UCLA, get destroyed by rival Arizona, 99-61, and trail Utah by margins of 30-2 and 64-19 en route to a 81-46 loss. The only thing Arizona State has to look forward to is the slim chance of a run in the PAC-12 Tournament. But before they get there, they'll have to play the second of the dreaded "elevation" trip of Salt Lake City to Boulder. They do get an extra day off having not played since Thursday but based on their current form, it won't matter. And we can expect a prime effort from the home side as Colorado (20-9, 9-7) can ill-afford a "bad loss." A Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks

Denver +5 at Dallas O/U 209
Recommendation: Denver

Very quietly, waaaay underneath the national radar, the Dallas Mavericks have been falling apart for the better part of the last two months.  To call the Mavs poor home favorites is something of an understatement.  The results don’t lie.  Dallas has played 13 home games since the calendar turned to 2016.  They have led at the end of regulation in a grand total of three of those games.

The teams Dallas has been able to beat comfortably at home are not exactly elite.  They’ve beaten the 76ers, Nets and Suns – three of the four worst teams in the NBA (along with the Lakers, of course).  Twice Dallas has escaped with OT wins over non-playoff teams (Sacramento and Minnesota); more ‘lucky’ than ‘good’ even when stepping down in class.

In fact, the Mavs haven’t really been beating any competitive teams on any floor of late.  They are 4-10 SU in their last 14 games, with the wins coming against Philly, Brooklyn, the LA Lakers and Memphis without Marc Gasol in the lineup – not exactly an elite quartet. Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Nashville Predators at Chicago Blackhawks

Nashville at Chicago O/U 5
Recommendation: Chicago -1.5 +210

The Chicago Blackhawks will battle their division rivals the Nashville Predators tonight at the United Center. The Blackhawks should be refocused and ready to take out some anger after Sunday's embarrassing 6-1 loss to Minnesota in the Stadium Series game held outside at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Despite losing three of their last four games at the "Madhouse on Madison", Chicago sports a stellar 22-7-2 overall home record. They also hold a 6-3-1 record against Central Division opponents including a pair of wins against Nashville this season. The Predators come into this contest winners of four of their last six games and 3-0-1 in their last four road games. Nashville currently holds the top Wild Card spot in the Western Conference with 69 points with fellow division foe Colorado trailing by only three points. These two teams always play each other tough, and while the Hawks have turned in some lackluster efforts since the All-Star Break, this club knows that they’ll have to bring their A-game versus a division rival. Chicago has covered the puck-line in six of their Read more

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Calgary Flames at Los Angeles Kings

Calgary at Los Angeles -200 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

My clients and I have cashed a multitude of over-the-total winners involving the Calgary Flames since the All-Star break and that is a trend worth riding tonight as they head west to face the Los Angeles Kings. Calgary is struggling defensively and goalie Jonas Hiller has not been able to hold up since taking over the starting role for injured Karri Ramo. Hiller has allowed 22 goals over his last five starts in net. Flames defenseman Kris Russell is not a household name but he might be one of the more unsung injuries in the league. Russell is a plus defensive player in his own zone, a shot blocking machine, and also a very strong penalty killer. Calgary has allowed 18 goals to Anaheim (twice), Minnesota and Vancouver in its last four games without Russell on the ice as the penalty kill was ripped apart. He is likely to once again be out of the lineup for tonight's game. The Flames also have the suspension to Dennis Wideman in effect and they've lost another blue liner as Ladislav Smid went down with an injury in the loss to Minnesota and he has been placed on IR. That is bad news for an already Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NBA Eastern Conference second half preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week in this space, I wrote about what I’m expecting from the Western Conference in the eight week stretch between the end of the All-Star Break and the beginning of the playoffs.  This week, I’m going to focus on the East, before my attention turns to March Madness for the next few Wiseguy Reports.

There’s no question that the Eastern Conference is finally getting better after nearly two decades of playing second fiddle to the West.  Since Michael Jordan (and everybody else) left the Bulls following their sixth title in 1998, the Eastern Conference has only won five championships, something the Lakers and Spurs have each done five times by themselves during that span!  Detroit won in 2004, Miami won in 2006, 2012 and 2013 and Boston won in 2008.

And from all indications in the betting markets, the East isn’t very likely to win a title this year either.  Cleveland is the only team in the East priced at less than 15-1 to reach the Read more

MLB Handicapping: Miami moves in fences at Marlins Stadium

02.17.2016     07:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Bettors should be aware that the Miami Marlins moved in and lowered the outfield fences at Marlins Park. Since opening in 2012, Marlin Park has ranked 26th, 30th, 26th, and last year 28th in terms of Park Factor home run rate.

"From a statistical standpoint, there is an advantage, given our players and how they play. Where we're moving it in we'll get a slight advantage hitting versus pitching," Samson said. "It'll be interesting to see what it means psychologically. That's the one thing we can't measure.

"There are some players who say, 'When it plays smaller I feel better about myself.'"

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Buffalo Sabes at Ottawa Senators

Buffalo at Ottawa -145 O/U 5.5
Recommendation: Over

Two Atlantic Division clubs battle in the Canadian capital as the Ottawa Senators host the Buffalo Sabres tonight. Both clubs have fallen on hard times as of late with the Senators losing six of their last eight contests. The addition of defenseman Dion Phaneuf hasn't helped with their blueline issues as Ottawa's opponents have scored three or more goals in 12 of its last 15 games. Their penalty killing unit is dead last in the NHL having allowed 48 goals thus far in the season, and their 181 goals allowed overall is also a league-worst. Buffalo has lost seven of its last 11 games overall and will be without forward Evander Kane, who is scratched due to oversleeping and missing practice after partying on Sunday after the NBA All-Star Game in Toronto. His benching obviously hurts what has been an inconsistent offense. Ironically enough, the Sabres have been outshot in each of their wins dating all the way back to December 14th. Ottawa has gone over the total in seven of its last 10 games while the Sabres are currently on a 3-1 O/U. Even with Kane out, the defenses for both squads is suspect enough to Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: UT-Arlington Mavericks at Georgia State Panthers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UT-Arlington at Georgia State -1 O/U 139.5
Recommendation: Over

Georgia State has talked a lot about finding easier ways to score including the occasional fast break opportunity. It's no doubt been a grind as the Panthers rank 11th in the Sun Belt in offensive efficiency (0.96 ppp). Last time out, they beat Texas State despite failing to crack 60 and prior to that were held to 53 in a road loss at Arkansas-Little Rock. Tonight's opponent, however, serves as an opportunity for GSU to run a little bit and also score some points. UT-Arlington is one of the fastest teams in the country and routinely plays games in the 150's and above. Eight out of their 10 Sun Belt games topped 140 including the first meeting between the two schools as UTA won 85-70 (76 possessions). Thing are a little different this time around as UTA lost Kevin Hervey (18.1 ppg) for the year back in late January. The Mavericks had a "hump up" effort the first game without Hervey as they crushed Arkansas State 91-64. But since then, UTA has dropped four straight and allowed 84.8 ppg in the process. Keep in mind this was a squad that earlier this year held Ohio State to 68 and Read more

Super Bowl 50 Prop Bet Pick: Carolina Panthers Player Rushing Attempts

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Carolina Over 4.5 players to get a Rush Attempt  (+140 Superbook)
Jonathan Stewart will be the starting running back.  Cam Newton had at least three rushing attempts in every game, averaging just shy of eight per contest.  Fullback Mike Tolbert had at least one rush in 17 of the Panthers 18 games; at least two rushes in 16 of those games.  Those three are virtual ‘locks’ to get a carry.

But at least four other Panthers have a decent shot to get a carry on Sunday, making the Over 4.5 a worthy wager at this attractive plus price.  I wrote up my rational for Ted Ginn above.  Corey Brown is another speedster, with six rushing attempts during the regular season, five of which gained seven yards or more.  Backup RB Cameron Artis Payne had 36 carries in four games down the stretch, and he’s certainly could to see the field here after missing the NFC Championship Game.  And third down back Fozzy Whittaker, banged up down the stretch, is ‘live’ to get a carry (or two, or three) as well.  Whittaker had 16 carries in their final four regular season games and two more in the NFC title Read more
