NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: Chicago Blackhawks at Montreal Canadiens

Chicago +105 at Montreal O/U 5
Recommendation: Chicago

Two Original Six clubs clash in "La Metropole" tonight, as the Chicago Blackhawks open a three-game north-of-the-border road trip against the Montreal Canadiens. The Habs return home off of a four-game road trek of their own where they went 3-1 including a recent 4-1 victory over Edmonton. Montreal has won eight of its last 10 games overall and have recaptured the top spot in the Atlantic Division race with only 12 games remaining after tonight. The Canadiens however will have their hands full with Chicago, who is not only playing very sharp hockey as of late (13-3 streak, 8-1 on the road) but the Hawks have had the Habs' number over the years with six straight wins and a 8-0-2 mark in their last 10 meetings. Superstar Patrick Kane notched his 30th goal on Sunday in a big 4-2 victory over division rival Minnesota and goaltender Corey Crawford was sensational between the pipes, blocking 42 shots on net. The Montreal native has played very well against the club he watched as a kid, with a lifetime 6-0-2 mark versus the Habs. With the Blackhawks' solid 7-1 run as an Read more

Another group attempts to fight federal ban on sports betting

Another organization pushing to repeal the archaic Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992.

“Legalizing sports betting would produce substantial social and political benefits by exposing billions of dollars in economic activity to the sunshine of legitimacy,” said Minton, a Competitive Enterprise Institute fellow specializing in consumer policy.

“Decriminalization would renew respect for the law by individuals who see gambling on sports as a valid form of entertainment for adults. Allowing bookies and authorities to work together to stop match fixing — which is in both of their interests — would bolster the integrity of sports,” she said.

College Basketball Handicapping: Bettors need to know mid-major conference tournaments

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Many mid-major college basketball conferences will tip off their respective tournaments next week. Understanding the format of these tournaments is imperative to betting the final week of the regular season. You optimally want to find teams with something to play for in terms of seeding, especially if the opponent has little to nothing to play for. I will examine several leagues and how the race for seeding currently stands.

Colonial  - The CAA Tournament will be held in Charleston, South Carolina. The top six seeds will go straight through to the quarterfinals. Prior to that, there will be two first round games pitting the no. 7 vs. no. 10 and no. 8 vs. no. 9 with the two winners advancing.  UNC Wilmington, Charleston, Towson, Elon, William & Mary and Northeastern are currently make up the top six. Northeastern has a slim one-game lead over James Madison and a two-game lead over Hofstra and Delaware. Northeastern has a tough final two games as they face Elon and UNC Wilmington on the road while James Madison plays the more manageable slate hosting Drexel and Hofstra. The race for the final first round bye is very much alive. Read more

NBA Betting News: Miami Heat vow to fix leaky defense

02.15.2017     09:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Throughout Miami's incredible 13-game winning streak, the offense averaged a well-oiled 109.3 ppg. The Heat though enter tonight having dropped two straight and while the offense continued to roll (109 and 107 points), the team's defense regressed. Philadelphia and Orlando hung 117 and 116 respectively and the challenge stiffens tonight as the Heat head to Houston.

“The last three games we’ve played against opponents who like to run,” guard Goran Dragic said. “…First of all, we need to get back on defense. We allowed too many points in transition. We just need to communicate. We’ve already proven that we can play good defense.”

College Basketball Handicapping: Indiana's Crean calls out players

02.15.2017     09:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's a fine line between constructive criticism and throwing your team under the bus. Indiana's Tom Crean appears to have accomplished a little of both following Sunday's home loss to Michigan. The Hoosiers have been hurt by injuries but it doesn't excuse the offense from failing to top 65 points in five of its last six games. IU heads to Minnesota tonight. They are currently +5 underdogs.

“I’ve never coach a team with this lack of maturity when it comes to being able to respond and rebound from when things aren’t going well for them personally. That includes the teams that have won six or eight games.” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

“Immaturity in the backcourt. We don’t play both ends of the floor with the same purpose that we have to play [with] when shots are not going down. That has to change” – Tom Crean, Indiana head coach

NHL Handicapper Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Blues at Detroit Red Wings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis -110 at Detroit O/U 5.5
Recommendation: St. Louis

Two former Central Division rivals clash in the Motor City tonight as the Detroit Red Wings host the St. Louis Blues. Detroit has fallen on hard times as of late, dropping nine of its last 11 contests. They currently sit dead last in the Eastern Conference with 54 points and could be skating without two of their best forwards as veteran Thomas Vanek is out indefinitely with a lower body injury and Gustav Nyquist could miss a few games after a high-sticking incident in Sunday's 6-3 loss at Minnesota. The 27-year-old winger hit Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon in the face, drawing blood with the blade of his stick and served a 4-minute double minor. Nyquist will have an in-person hearing in New York soon, which suggests he could miss as many as six games. As for Vanek, the club's leading goal-scorer with 14 and second in points with 36, this further handcuffs a Detroit offense that has scored three goals or fewer in 10 of its last 11 games. The Blues have started to get back on the right track under new coach Mike Yeo with wins in five of their last six. Wingers Patrik Berglund and Vladimir Read more

Super Bowl LI Prop Bet Pick: Will Either Team Convert a Fourth Down?

Will Either Team Convert a Fourth Down?  Yes (-200)
Somebody is going to be behind in the fourth quarter of this game. Somebody is going to be facing a fourth an inches in the red zone. Both teams went for it on fourth downs more than the average squad (especially the average playoff teams, who weren’t trailing in the fourth quarter all season), and both team were in the Top 10 in conversion percentage.  The key here is that I trust BOTH of these offenses to have a well above average chance to convert on any fourth down conversion tries.

Super Bowl LI Prop Bet Pick: Number of Atlanta Falcons With A Rush Attempt

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Number of Atlanta Falcons With A Rush Attempt: Over 3.5 -135
The Atlanta Falcons had four different players with a rush attempt in each of their two playoff games and I think we will see that trend continue on Sunday. Devonta Freeman, Tevin Coleman and Matt Ryan (who is athletic enough to make plays and scored a rushing TD against Green Bay) are likely candidates to carry the ball at least once and I think there will be a fourth player to get an attempt. Receivers Julio Jones, Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel are absolutely candidates to carry the ball on an end-around or double reverse type play. And trick plays certainly can't be ruled out of the equation especially with a creative offensive mind like Kyle Shanahan at the controls of the offense. Atlanta has a recent track record of 4+ players carrying the ball and it’s worth riding again on Sunday.

Super Bowl LI Gambling: Prop bets give bettors a great chance for big profits

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The stage is set for Sunday's Super Bowl LI in Houston. The Las Vegas and offshore consensus opening line was New England -3 and it's held put save for a few shops adjusting on juice.  The total opened 57 and has since been bet up to 58.5 offshore and 59 in Vegas. This is the sixth Super Bowl that will feature the league's top scoring offense (Atlanta) against the league's top scoring defense NFL (New England). The top ranked scoring defense won four of the five previous games; the most recent in 2013 when Seattle demolished Denver 43-8.

As mentioned in previous columns, New England's gaudy numbers were assisted in a big way by the league's weakest strength of schedule. The Patriots also faced a slew of lower-tiered quarterbacks. But against the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were projected to be their toughest offensive opponent to-date, New England allowed a modest 368 yards and 17 points en route to a dominating 36-17 win in the AFC Championship. Atlanta's offensive output (420 ypg, 6.7 ypp) was in no way fluky. The Falcons faced one of the toughest defensive slates in the league and routinely were able to move the ball seemingly at will. The big question is can Read more
