Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Previewing the Western and Eastern Conference Finals

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Only four teams remain standing in the NBA Playoffs; one of whom will bring home the title less than a month from now.  For all the drama of the first two rounds, it’s an all-chalk Final Four, with the top two seeds from each conference battling for supremacy.

With both Conference Finals getting underway on Sunday and Monday, I’ll take a closer look at the two series.  The goal, as always, is to unearth hidden nuggets pointing towards future pointspread success while assessing pace and totals as well.

Predicting series success generally correlates strongly with predicting pointspread success when it comes to the NBA Playoffs.  But not as much as last year!  In 2013, the Final Four teams combined to go 31-11 (74%) against the spread in the first two rounds of postseason; each of the four teams cashing at a 67% clip or better.  The ‘surprise’ team of the four, Memphis, went 10-1 ATS through the first two rounds before covering only once while getting swept by San Antonio.

The ATS success of the Final Four teams in 2014 pales in comparison to 2013.  Between them, the NBA’s Final Four have turned a Read more

NBA Gambling Update: Spurs leery of Ibaka's status for series

05.19.2014     08:21 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

On Friday we discussed the impact Serge Ibaka's injury had on the betting markets for both Game 1 and the Western Conference Finals series. By all accounts, Ibaka is done for the year but the Spurs are for whatever reason skeptical. Note that while Ibaka's injury (assuming he's out) could hurt the Thunder from a defensive perspective, offensive they've been significantly better this postseason with him on the pine (+5.7 per 48 vs. -2.1).

"I don't really believe it," point guard Tony Parker told reporters Sunday. "I'll believe when I see tomorrow he is not on the court. It's hard to believe. We'll see."

MLB Handicapping: Baltimore Orioles call up Kevin Gausman

05.14.2014     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit (Verlander) at Baltimore (Gausman)-

The Baltimore Orioles have called up top rated prospect Kevin Gausman for this afternoon's game vs. Detroit. Gausman, a hard throwing righty, struggled as a starter last season but eventually found his groove out of the bullpen. In six starts at Triple-A Norfolk this year, Gausman posted a 2.08 ERA.

“He’s ready to go tomorrow. I don’t know if it’ll be a pure number pitch count as opposed to how the Tigers are doing against him more than [anything],” Showalter said. “Obviously, there’s a number there that I’ll have in mind.”

MLB Betting Notes: Things going from bad to worse for Texas Rangers pitching staff

05.12.2014     02:32 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So if you weren't already aware, Texas' pitching staff is an absolute train wreck right now.

Robbie Ross - Struggling to adjust to life as a full-time starter. Allowed 17 earned runs with a dismal 6-4 K-to-BB ratio in his last three outings.

Tanner Scheppers - Currently on the DL with elbow problems. Posted a 9.82 ERA in four starts.

Matt Harrison - Working his way back from back surgery. Has a 2.87 ERA in three starts but alarming 9-9 K-to-BB ratio.

Colby Lewis - Back after nearly two years of elbow rehab. In five starts hasn't made it past the fifth inning and owns a 6.12 ERA.

Martin Perez - After a 26-inning scoreless stretch, velocity went down and so did his numbers (13.1 IP, 19 ERs, 10 BBs, 12 Ks)...and arm. He's currently scheduled for an MRI on his elbow.

Alexi Ogando  - Appears overworked (20 appearances) and has the ERA to show for it (8.10).

Joe Saunders - Currently rehabbing an ankle injury in minors. Has made only one start Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Hamels) at NY Mets (Niese) -125 O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Over

The Philadelphia Phillies will send Cole Hamels to the mound for today’s afternoon start against the New York Mets. The left-hander missed the bulk of April while nursing a strained elbow. In his first start against the Dodgers he looked in midseason form allowing just two runs in six innings. However in his two most recent starts the wheels have fallen off. One of those starts was against the Mets where he was hammered for six runs in 4.2 innings of work and also managed to walk an uncharacteristically high five batter. Meanwhile, the Mets will have their own southpaw on the hill in Jon Niese. The numbers look brilliant for Niese with a 1.82 ERA but the time to sell has arrived. Niese has dealt with shoulder issues in the past and took a cortisone shot for his ailing limb during in spring training. His velocity has dipped, but the numbers have largely stayed strong. However, in visually watching Niese Read more

Pro sports teams partnering with gambling entities

05.07.2014     12:17 PM     Printer Friendly
Article in Sports Illustrated about to evolving relationship between professional sports teams and casinos and online gambling sites.

Earlier this year the New Jersey Devils and the Philadelphia 76ers signed sponsorship agreements with PartyPoker, an online portal owned by bwin, operator of a large Internet sports book. Around the same time Major League Baseball -- having last year dismissed fantasy leagues as "a flip of the coin" akin to gambling -- quietly partnered with DraftKings, which bills itself as "Daily Fantasy Sports for Cash." In 2012 the NFL lifted its ban on teams accepting some advertisements from casinos. The WNBA's Phoenix Mercury have a jersey sponsorship deal with an Arizona casino, while the Connecticut Sun play home games at Mohegan Sun.

Ben Affleck pinched for card counting in Vegas

05.05.2014     11:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ben Affleck was told his card counting skills were "too obvious" by Las Vegas' Hard Rock Casino and thus barred from the blackjack tables. If only Affleck could have put his alleged smarts to use during the development of the mind-numbingly awful Runner, Runner.

“You’re too good at the game,” Hard Rock security managers are said to have told him as they escorted the actor from the blackjack tables and found him and his wife, Jennifer Garner, the actress, a taxi back to their hotel.

“While playing at a table, Ben was asked repeatedly to stop card counting. However, he would not stop. The casino staff told Ben that he was being too obvious.”

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Washington Nationals at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington (Gonzalez) -135 at Philadelphia (Hernandez) O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

Gio Gonzalez will take the hill for the Nationals today. He continues to be a consistent force in the National League with a 3.25 ERA and extremely strong 38-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Those numbers fall right in line with the 3.11 ERA he owns since being from the Oakland a’s back in 2012. Of course, coming from the left-handed side Gonzalez is the perfect match-up against the likes of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, while Domonic Brown will rest. Meanwhile, the enigmatic Roberto Hernandez will start for the Phillies. The big time groundball hurler will be making a rare start against the Nationals, last facing them in 2010 when he was on Cleveland. His overall numbers don’t impress but with the exception of a poor outing in Colorado – where his sinker has a tendency not to sink – he’s been serviceable. The Nationals continue to feature a beat-up lineup with Bryce Harper Read more

NHL Handicapping: Advanced stats big part of Chicago Blackhawks success

05.02.2014     11:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Great article on the Chicago Blackhawks and their usage of advanced analytics. The Blackhawks have won two Stanley Cup titles in the last four years and are currently a heavy favorite over Montreal in the Western Conference semifinals.

“Stats are what they are,” Bowman said. “There’s no disputing who scored the goal, or who was on the ice for the goal. That’s fact. What you do with that is sort of the real value. And I think there’s an art to it. The analytics themselves are very objective. But then you have to do something with them and draw conclusions.”

“What we do is different,” Bowman said. “I think it’s better, but I guess it’s a matter of opinion. It’s also a competitive advantage. That stuff’s readily available, but what we have is more proprietary. Which is why I’m really trying not to talk about it. I think what we do gives us an advantage over other teams. They might say Read more
