WSOP winner will pocket $8.3 million

07.09.2013     01:38 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Over 6,500 poker players are competing for this year's World Series of Poker Main Event. First place takes home a cool $8.3 million.

“Back then, I knew three poker players,” Moneymaker said at the ceremony. “Over the last 10 years, I’ve met thousands and thousands of wonderful people in this game. It’s really evolved into something magical, and what you see here today.”

Paul Pierce the latest pro athlete to compete at WSOP

07.08.2013     08:09 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
In case you missed it, Paul Pierce was traded to the New Jersey Nets. Yeah, late June NBA trades aren't exactly on our radar either. But Pierce's appearance at the World Series of Poker $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event caught our eye. He made it to the third day and ended up finishing 147th. Kudos, Paul.

Doyle Brunson shows off his pair of huge balls

07.03.2013     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Poker legend Doyle Brunson is betting big...on himself.

“I actually have no idea who took some took action (against Doyle)," said Shaun Deeb. "I can say that I wasn’t involved. I like Doyle’s chances though. If he’s willing to make bets then he knows he has the best of it. It’s more motivation for him to come in and play an event. I know he adjusted his sleep schedule for this tournament. He looks really comfortable on the tables and enjoying himself and I’m sure he’s playing his A-game.”

"I’ve heard bets similar to this before," said Brian Rast, who told us he didn't have any bets with Doyle. "It’s scary to take because essentially you’re betting on someone versus a whole bunch of people. Most of the people aren’t going to cash. In Doyle’s instance, if he does cash then those people are going to lose a lot of money. It’s an interesting bet. I didn’t make any bets like that in this tournament Read more

The world of high stakes celebrity poker

07.02.2013     06:59 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Great read from New York Magazine on the infamous high stakes poker game the featured a handful of celebrities...and the Russian Mob.

Around 2009, she’d moved to New York from Los Angeles, where she had spent several years running an exclusive high-stakes game for Tobey Maguire and several of his friends—Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, A-Rod. Some players found her hard to get to know; the wealthier ones liked the way she respected boundaries. For many of the regulars at the Plaza, Bloom’s legend had preceded her.

PokerStars forks over $6 million to Kentucky

06.21.2013     11:51 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
For whatever reason, the state of Kentucky has felt the need to go after online gambling like J Edgar went after the Reds. PokerStars just forked over $6 million to the Bluegrass State – which may be PokerStars’ way of saying sorry just in case federal legalization occurs. As for Kentucky’s motive for the shakedown, it seems odd that a conservative state located in the Bible Belt with only two metropolitan areas really has THAT big of an online gambling problem. As always, something smells fishy.

“Gov. Steve Beshear announced today that Kentucky will receive more than $6 million for its groundbreaking actions to curb rampant unregulated online gambling in the state”.

“The settlement stems from the unprecedented action Kentucky took in 2008, when the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet filed suit to seize 141 domain names used to conduct unauthorized and unlicensed internet gambling in the Commonwealth."

Reid says online gambling bill hurts online poker's future

06.13.2013     11:49 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Interesting take on the potential pitfalls of trying legalize and regulate online gambling vs. online poker. Pro-poker supporters have long argued that it is a game a skill whereas casino games are obviously not. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid didn't sound too excited about the prospects of Rep. Peter King's recent online gambling bill.

Reid said that a bill filed in the House of Representatives yesterday by Rep. Peter King, D-N.Y., made the prospects of a poker bill even bleaker, because it “basically authorizes everything – 21, poker, everything,” Reid said.

Poker pro plays for nearly five straight days

06.13.2013     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
Poker pro Phil Laak decided to play for 115 straight hours. Some sort of record, right? Absolutely.

"Wow, 115 hours, I should have my head examined," said Laak, as the number appeared on the running clock on a laptop screen next to his seat at the Bellagio Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas. "I am definitely sick."

Online poker could help televised coverage bounce back

06.05.2013     01:21 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Remember a few years back when on any given day there would be multiple poker events on TV? Nowadays, you really have to search save for ESPN’s World Series of Poker coverage. TV execs however are banking on another poker boom with online legalization looming.

“Online poker will introduce a lot of new people to the game and I think that will bring another big wave to television,” said Jamie Horowitz, vice president original programming and production for Walt Disney’s ESPN.

Here is a clip of the upcoming online poker movie "Runner, Runner" starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake (September release). And what would a gambling movie be without someone getting tossed into a pool of alligators (editor’s note – those may be crocodiles).

PokerStars poised for another run at the United States

05.23.2013     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Wall Street Journal tackles the rise, fall, and potential rise again of online poker giant, PokerStars.

"Normally, companies who have founders who are under indictments don't go applying for gambling licenses," said Nelson Rose, a gambling law professor at Whittier Law School, in Costa Mesa, Calif.

"We have to begin to explain that we're a completely normal company," said Guy Templer, PokerStars' head of business development. "We're not a backroom shop on a rock in the sea."
