Vegas poker player tips cab driver $10K for returning forgotten $300K

01.02.2014     08:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In keeping with today's Good Samaritan theme, here's another gem. An unnamed Las Vegas poker player left $300K in a cab and had it returned courtesy of the cab driver. He "tipped" the cabbie $10K for his nice deed.

"It's good enough, I really appreciate it," Gamboa said about the reward. "I wasn't expecting anything from the people I help. I never expect anything from the people I do good for, but I really appreciate it and that he appreciated what I'd done for him."

New Jersey says no to PokerStars

12.13.2013     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey's online poker is up and running but without a familiar face as industry giant PokerStars had its application suspended for two years.

“The Division’s determination is based primarily on the unresolved federal indictment against Isai Scheinberg for the alleged violation of federal gambling statutes, namely, the Illegal Gambling Business Act and the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), and the involvement of certain PokerStars executives with Internet gaming operations in the United States following the enactment of UIGEA.”

UPDATE

Early reviews on the upcoming online poker movie 'Runner, Runner' starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake sound pretty tepid.

Trailer for online gambling movie Runner, Runner

Here's the official trailer for the upcoming online poker movie Runner, Runner starting Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck. Couple of observations. Right off the bat we see Bob Gunton playing Warden Norton of Shawshank Prison. Next, Ben Affleck is apparently reprising his role as JT Marlin's co-founder, Jim "I'm Read more

They're Watching You: Playing online poker in Nevada

09.24.2013     11:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting interview with the CEO of Locaid, a San Francisco based company that polices online poker – most notably making sure bettors are inside the state lines of Nevada.

Basically, we draw a line around the state and ping the device they are wagering on. If the dot is red (outside the border), the transaction doesn't go through. If it's green (inside the border), it's OK. That information is provided to the sheriff's office.

Poker as a game of skill once again called into question

08.07.2013     11:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well, this isn't good.

“There is uncertainty about the laws of the United States governing Internet poker, though not about laws governing Internet sports betting.  In United States v. DiCristina a Federal District Court for the Eastern District of New York held that poker is a game in which skill is the predominant factor in determining the outcome and that in passing the Illegal Gambling Businesses Act, Congress only intended to criminalize clear games of chance.”

“The ‘game of skill’ argument to support the legality of poker was a lie perpetrated by Online Poker companies to deceive consumers into depositing money on their gambling Internet sites,” said Lavery to FORBES.  ”I think this decision renders the skill argument a dead letter for loophole gambling like online poker and the so-called emerging ‘Daily Fantasy Sports’ craze.  This ruling should not have an Impact on the Internet Poker Freedom Act.  That bill Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In case you missed it, Paul Pierce was traded to the New Jersey Nets. Yeah, late June NBA trades aren't exactly on our radar either. But Pierce's appearance at the World Series of Poker $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha event caught our eye. He made it to the third day and ended up finishing 147th. Kudos, Paul.

Doyle Brunson shows off his pair of huge balls

07.03.2013     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Poker legend Doyle Brunson is betting big...on himself.

“I actually have no idea who took some took action (against Doyle)," said Shaun Deeb. "I can say that I wasn’t involved. I like Doyle’s chances though. If he’s willing to make bets then he knows he has the best of it. It’s more motivation for him to come in and play an event. I know he adjusted his sleep schedule for this tournament. He looks really comfortable on the tables and enjoying himself and I’m sure he’s playing his A-game.”

"I’ve heard bets similar to this before," said Brian Rast, who told us he didn't have any bets with Doyle. "It’s scary to take because essentially you’re betting on someone versus a whole bunch of people. Most of the people aren’t going to cash. In Doyle’s instance, if he does cash then those people are going to lose a lot of money. It’s an interesting bet. I didn’t make any bets like that in this tournament Read more

The world of high stakes celebrity poker

07.02.2013     06:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Great read from New York Magazine on the infamous high stakes poker game the featured a handful of celebrities...and the Russian Mob.

Around 2009, she’d moved to New York from Los Angeles, where she had spent several years running an exclusive high-stakes game for Tobey Maguire and several of his friends—Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, A-Rod. Some players found her hard to get to know; the wealthier ones liked the way she respected boundaries. For many of the regulars at the Plaza, Bloom’s legend had preceded her.
