The man behind online poker's Black Friday

04.29.2014     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A few years ago we blogged about Daniel Tzvetkoff who was played a big role in online poker's infamous Black Friday. The dude's back story is pretty incredible and not surprising someone wrote a book about it. You can almost guarantee it will at some point be made into a move. Hopefully it'll be more watchable than the absolutely awful Runner, Runner.

Faced with the prospect of up to 76 years in jail for money laundering, bank fraud and conspiracy charges, Tzvektoff became an informant whose testimony led directly to Black Friday - the day online gambling in the US was shut down.

UPDATE

After getting burned by fake chips, Atlantic City's Borgata Casino was forced to go a more modern route. The new chips can be authenticated using some sort of UV light.

"This was very expensive, but very necessary," said Joe Lupo, the casino's senior vice president. "In order to have the biggest tournaments in Atlantic City and as the market leader, we need to ensure the integrity of the games."

Anti-online gambling lawmakers scoff a poker being a game of skill

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Man, these anti-gambling crusaders are pricks.

“If you want to have online gambling, then come to the Congress. ... If you want to have a poker exception, offer an amendment and see if it will pass,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who introduced the bill today along with Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah.

“Sheldon has aligned himself with most Baptists in South Carolina,” Graham said, when asked about the association of his efforts with Adelson’s campaign. “I’m on solid footing with the people of South Carolina that I represent. The fact that Sheldon is on board is a good thing.”

Nevada and Delaware team up with online poker

02.26.2014     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you live in Delaware and your buddy lives in Nevada you'll soon be able to play online poker against one another.

“We’re standing in a moment of history today,” Sandoval said at a news conference with Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. “We hope (the deal) will serve as a model for multistate collaboration and that other states will see the benefits of the agreement and soon decide to join for themselves.”

“We can’t wait,” Sandoval said of Washington’s continued, on-again, off-again wrangling with legalizing online poker. “I see this as an opportunity for the states to show leadership, and it’s good for gaming, it’s good for business, and it’s good for the economies of our two states. “

To make $60K with a 25% ROI, you need to play tournaments with a combined buy-in of $240,000. Nearly a quarter of a million dollars of buy-ins each year in order to make what is a little above average income in the US.

Casino execs say online gambling won't hurt land-based operations

02.18.2014     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to a few prominent casino executives, online gambling is not going cut into the profits of brick-and-mortar operations. This of course a far cry from Sheldon Adelson's claim that it will "cannibalize $25 million to $50 million of land-based revenues at the state’s land based casinos."

“These results also once again demonstrate online gaming’s potential to expand our business,” Smith said in a statement. “About 85 percent of our online players have not had rated play at Borgata in at least two years, showing there is little overlap with our land-based business.”

The Golden Nugget’s Thomas Winter told reporters that his company expects 60 to 70 percent of online players to be made up of customers who infrequently or never visit the Golden Nugget.

New Jersey online poker showing signs of life

02.17.2014     10:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here's some results of a recent poll on New Jersey online poker players.

“Of the online players that we researched just two weeks ago, 35% had only begun gaming online following New Jersey’s decision in November 2013. This level of take-up, coupled with the movement to approved sites, represents a compelling fiscal case study for states seeking to cut their budget deficits.”
