Nevada and Delaware team up with online poker

02.26.2014     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If you live in Delaware and your buddy lives in Nevada you'll soon be able to play online poker against one another.

“We’re standing in a moment of history today,” Sandoval said at a news conference with Delaware Gov. Jack Markell. “We hope (the deal) will serve as a model for multistate collaboration and that other states will see the benefits of the agreement and soon decide to join for themselves.”

“We can’t wait,” Sandoval said of Washington’s continued, on-again, off-again wrangling with legalizing online poker. “I see this as an opportunity for the states to show leadership, and it’s good for gaming, it’s good for business, and it’s good for the economies of our two states. “

Making a living as a tournament poker player is a grind

Good article on Deadspin on how hard it is to make it as a tournament poker player.

To make $60K with a 25% ROI, you need to play tournaments with a combined buy-in of $240,000. Nearly a quarter of a million dollars of buy-ins each year in order to make what is a little above average income in the US.

Casino execs say online gambling won't hurt land-based operations

02.18.2014     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to a few prominent casino executives, online gambling is not going cut into the profits of brick-and-mortar operations. This of course a far cry from Sheldon Adelson's claim that it will "cannibalize $25 million to $50 million of land-based revenues at the state’s land based casinos."

“These results also once again demonstrate online gaming’s potential to expand our business,” Smith said in a statement. “About 85 percent of our online players have not had rated play at Borgata in at least two years, showing there is little overlap with our land-based business.”

The Golden Nugget’s Thomas Winter told reporters that his company expects 60 to 70 percent of online players to be made up of customers who infrequently or never visit the Golden Nugget.

New Jersey online poker showing signs of life

02.17.2014     10:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here's some results of a recent poll on New Jersey online poker players.

“Of the online players that we researched just two weeks ago, 35% had only begun gaming online following New Jersey’s decision in November 2013. This level of take-up, coupled with the movement to approved sites, represents a compelling fiscal case study for states seeking to cut their budget deficits.”

The old counterfeit poker chips in the toilet trick

01.29.2014     06:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well, here's a subplot for Ocean's Fourteen. A man made counterfeit poker chips, used them in an Atlantic City poker tournament, disposed of said chips by flushing them down the toilet [insert lame joke about a Royal Flush], and of course got busted.

PokerStars positioning itself for New Jersey online poker

01.22.2014     01:49 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting article on calvinayre.com about the likelihood of PokerStars soon becoming a part of the New Jersey online poker scene.

Sources have told CalvinAyre.com that the US Department of Justice has adopted a new approach toward pending prosecutions of individuals in connection with online gambling. In essence, provided those being prosecuted aren’t US citizens and the companies with which they are associated maintained no physical infrastructure within US borders, the DOJ will accept corporate pleas and fines to resolve all outstanding charges.

The Sheldon Adelson nightmare continues

This isn't good news for those of you hoping that Sheldon Adelson would crawl into a hole and never be heard from again. This goof is hell-bent on keeping online gambling illegal – so much so that here's the federal bill he just drafted. WTF.

Party Poker to sponsor New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia 76ers

01.09.2014     08:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia 76ers just inked a sponsorship deal with bwin.party which operates Party Poker. The NBA had no issue with the arrangement saying that so long as it has nothing to do with sports betting, you're in the clear.

“As long as the gambling site doesn’t include sports gambling or sports betting, it’s now allowed within our rules,” NBA vice president Mark Tatum said in a statement sent by the league to The Associated Press.

“We are proud to welcome partypoker to our family as we embark on an exciting journey with an innovative, global leader in the digital marketplace” O’Neil said. “As an organization, we will continue to align with brands that aspire to grow with us, in true partnership.”
