MLB Betting News: Carlos Zambrano out of whack according to Guillen

06.21.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Zambrano) at Boston (Matusaka) -135 O/U 10.5

For as long as we can remember, there has been Good Carlos Zambrano and Bad Carlos Zambrano. Good Carlos had a 1.86 ERA in mid-June. Bad Carlos got smacked around for 11 earned runs in back-to-back starts. Based on Miami manager Ozzie Guillen's recent quote, bettors would be wise to expect some more Bad Carlos tonight in Boston.

"Carlos right now is a little out of whack," Guillen said. "He's flying out. His mechanics are very bad. His sinker is moving away too long. You cannot get behind people (in the count) all the time. With you and pitching, it's not about how hard you throw. It's about location and what you want to do on the pitching mound."

It has now become officially impossible to bet on the Colorado Rockies

06.20.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This has a great chance of not working out.

In what amounts to an overhaul of his pitching staff, Tracy first said Colorado would send the struggling Jeremy Guthrie to the bullpen (OK, so far pretty normal), and that instead of replacing him in the rotation, the Rockies would go with a four-man rotation, with each starter limited to 75 pitches per start -- what!?!

“We have two rookies in the rotation, so you have to be very careful,” Tracy said. “You can’t just throw them loose on three days’ rest.”

“We had to do something that was unconventional,” Tracy said.

MLB Betting News: White Sox decide to cart Floyd out for another start

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Wells) at Chicago WS (Floyd) -175 O/U 10

The Chicago White Sox are apparently going to give Gavin Floyd another chance. Floyd has a 10.38 ERA over his last six starts and hasn't had a quality outing since May 11. According to well-respected pitching coach Don Cooper, Floyd's problems stem from a lack of command.

"It's not about stuff. Everyone in the league has stuff," Cooper said by phone from Los Angeles where the White Sox play the Dodgers Friday night on Comcast SportsNet. "You've got to command it more. You've got to pitch, and he's not commanding at the level he needs to command to put himself in a better position to win the game. That's what it comes down to."

"He's got enough fastball. He's got enough curve ball. He's got a major league slider, a major league changeup," Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: The list of starting pitcher injuries is comically long

06.20.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
We’ve never really tracked starting pitching injuries league-wide but it seems like there are an awful lot of guys currently on the shelf. This is just a rough estimate, but close to 33% of the league’s starting pitchers are hurt – everything from a skipped start to out for the season.

MLB Handicapping: Rays send Hellickson to DL, call up Archer for debut

06.20.2012     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The amount of starting pitchers to hit the DL of late continues to climb as the Tampa Bay Rays placed Jeremy Hellickson on the 15-day due to shoulder fatigue. Tampa’s Chris Archer was called up from Triple-A and will make his MLB debut tonight at Washington against Stephen Strasburg. Archer was a sixth round pick in 2006 and had a 4.81 ERA (3.41 FIP) with 90 strikeouts and 45 walks in 76.7 innings at Durham this season.

MLB Handicapping: Fading pitchers after a no-hitter or perfect game

06.19.2012     11:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We've tried to find some type of betting trend to use with pitchers off of no-hitters or perfect games. Unfortunately, there simply isn't much there. FanGraphs broke down the numbers and while overall, there tends to be a decline in performance the next time out, the results are pretty random. A few pitchers (see: Carlos Zambrano, Philip Humber, Johan Santana) got smacked around, others were solid (see: Mark Buehrle, Roy Halladay), and a few didn't miss a beat (see: Justin Verlander, Ervin Santana). The betting markers tried to fade Matt Cain last night and were correct in projecting a letdown (5 IP, 3 ER, 4 BBs, 4 Ks) but the Giants still won. For Johan Santana, it may have been the combination of a complete game shutout and then a no-hitter. He's been hit around each of his last two starts though it came on the road against the Yankees and Rays. Humber has had a rough go of it since tossing his perfect game. Weaver has seen his ERA climb a full run since his no-no, though it was in large part because of one bad outing (3.1 IP, 8 ERs at Texas). His other three starts were fine. In Read more

MLB Betting News: LA's Jered Weaver slated to start on Wednesday

06.19.2012     11:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Los Angeles' Jered Weaver (back) is expected to make his first start off the DL tomorrow against San Francisco. Weaver had a few bullpen sessions but the team refrained from giving him a rehab start. The Angels are likely to send Garrett Richards back to Triple-A. Richards was 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA.

"Jered is going to start Wednesday and Haren will start Friday" against the Dodgers, Scioscia said. "Then, we'll see where we're going from there."

The Angels could have sent Weaver out for a one-game rehabilitation stint, "but we didn't want him to waste bullets in the minor leagues," Scioscia said. "There's no reason he shouldn't get through five or six innings."

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox

06.19.2012     08:26 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Wood) at Chicago WS (Peavy) -200 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

With yesterday's wind pattern (right-to-left and gusty) we saw seven home runs and 15 runs at Chicago's Cellular Field. With a similar forecast projected for tonight, I think we can expect more than a few balls to leave the yard. Jake Peavy has allowed a modest eight home runs in nearly 90 innings – a very fortunate stat considering his fly ball rate is around 67%. For a pitcher to be that heavy towards the fly ball, his HR/FB rate should be well north of 10% instead of 6.8%. His rate is slightly higher at home (9.4%) but I still feel that he's going to have issues pitching in this park with temperatures on the rise and his innings starting to mount. Chicago's Travis Wood hasn't been very impressive this year (4.58 ERA) despite a handful of favorable matchups (at Minnesota, at San Francisco, vs. San Diego, at Houston). This may be his most difficult start of the season as the White Sox like to hit the Read more
