NBA Handicapping: Cleveland Cavaliers still miles away defensively

11.19.2014     01:23 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article of Cleveland's defensive shortcomings thus far. The Cavs currently ranked tied for 25th in defensive efficiency (108.3). Tonight's opponent, San Antonio, ranks third at 96.0.

“I don’t think it’s something you learn on the fly,” James said Wednesday. “I think it’s something you work on every single day. You teach it, you preach it, you demand it. I didn’t come [into the NBA] as being a big defensive guy. I played defense and my high school coaches did preach it, and we knew in order to win, we had to defend. This is a different level.

“You have to raise the level of expectation,” Blatt said the other day, “and the level of accountability, and you have to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts. Sometimes if you’re not blessed with great individual defenders, your principles have to be that much stronger, and your helps and your court recognition have to be that much better. And that’s why it’s taken us longer in that area of the game than on

Adam Silver is sports betting's messiah

11.18.2014     08:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seems as if NBA commissioner Adam Silver is the new go-to guy these days when it comes to the promotion of legalized sports betting. Funny to watch Lesniak and Christie fight the good fight in what continues to be a never-ending battle while Silver drops a couple of well-timed quotes and everyone is all of a sudden wondering, hey, why didn't we think of that?

"Finally, a commissioner that has some common sense," said Nick Bogdanovich, director of trading for William Hill's sportsbook in Nevada. "To me, he spoke the truth. I was glad he spoke up."

NBA Handicapping: Betting markets take notice of Houston's under-the-total ways

11.17.2014     12:04 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
How about the Houston Rockets going under the total in nine of their 10 games! Crazy, huh? Last season, while not the fastest nor the worst defensive team in the league, the Rockets still went over the total in about 56% of their games including the postseason. This year, through 10 games, Houston sports the league's best defensive efficiency as well as playing as a slightly slower pace. The markets have certainly taken notice, especially after Sunday night's college-esque 69-65 win over Oklahoma City. Tonight's total vs. Memphis opened 190 and is currently 187. That's four points lower than any Houston game last season (vs. Chicago 191). Their three meetings vs. Memphis were 194.5, 194,5, and 196.

NBA Handicapping: New York Knicks remain clueless offensively

11.11.2014     08:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We knew the New York Knicks were going to struggle with the newly implemented triangle offense. The team is currently 2-6 SU and ATS and averaging 91.1 ppg. They however haven't been as strong of an "under" team as projected with 4 overs, 3 unders, and a push. No doubt a result of their 27th ranked defensive efficiency mark.

“We have a lot of guys that aren’t being aggressive and playing with their instincts, and they’re being passive a little bit right now, trying to fit in to the team chemistry,” Fisher said.

“I don’t think it’s just passive. I just think, at times, it’s just everybody trying to do the right thing," Carmelo Anthony said. "Sometimes it’s almost to a fault."

NBA Betting Alert: Spurs sit key players, sportsbooks scramble to adjust

11.06.2014     02:54 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NBA Betting Rule no. 329: Never bet on a nationally televised San Antonio Spurs game unless Gregg Popovich personally calls you with who is playing and who is sitting. Houston now a 7-point favorite after opening -3. Total whacked down from 200.5 to 197.

Marco Belinelli (mild strain, right groin), Tim Duncan (rest), Manu Ginobili (rest), Patty Mills (right shoulder surgery) and Tiago Splitter (tightness, right calf) are listed as out for tonight’s game at Houston.
