NBA Playoff Betting Recap: Brooklyn Nets force Game 7 vs. Chicago Bulls

05.03.2013     06:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

It’s rare when you watch a team stay alive in the playoffs with a road victory, and come away from the game thinking “gutless.”

It’s just that...the bits and pieces of bodies that were wearing Chicago Bulls uniforms tonight battled so hard that anything else pales by comparison. Chicago was on basically a 5.5 man rotation…and one of their 40-minute guys was playing with plantar fasciitis pain that would have the rest of us on crutches. Another was dealing with the flu in a garbage can during timeouts.

Against a shorthanded team dealing with injuries, flu, and fatigue, the Brooklyn Nets scored 33 points in the first quarter, but only 35 points in the second half. They didn’t shoot well inside (extremely horrible in the second half because they started off well). They were only 5 of 14 on treys. They missed 11 free throws. And, they were outrebounded.

It was a win. And, it was a win that may have launched the Nets into a second round Read more

NBA Playoff Betting Recap: Celtics get hot from three, force Game 6 vs. Knicks

05.02.2013     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

I didn’t get a chance to watch Game Six of Boston/New York Wednesday night. I was following along the commentary on twitter. Sounded like the ultimate gut check performance from the valiant if aging Celtics, and a very lame no-show from the arrogant Knicks who shouldn’t have been talking trash.

Somehow…NOBODY SEEMED TO NOTICE THIS...

Three Pointers: Boston 11/22, New York 5/22

I can only talk about the people I follow…so maybe there were places that made this a big story. But…how can Boston fans watch that game and see guts and glory rather than a team shooting way over its head on treys? The Celtics won scoreboard by two treys…with a boxscore edge of six treys…in a stat they would normally be expected to lose handily.

So…give them credit for showing up, playing hard, and continuing to battle. Just keep this sequence in mind.

NBA Playoff Betting Recap: Harden huge as Rockets extend series

05.02.2013     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.

James Harden finally got hot, making his first seven treys on the way to a 31 point outing on only 16 field goal attempts. That helped Houston build a comfortable lead. In desperation, Oklahoma City started fouling Omer Asik to see if “Hack-a-Shaq” and “Hack-a-Dwight” would work on a big guy who actually has decent form, a soft release, and a complete lack of arrogance. Asik would end the night 13 of 18 from the free throw line. Houston would end the night celebrating a 107-100 victory

Houston 107, Oklahoma City 100

2-Point Percentage: Houston 54%, Oklahoma City 53%

3-Point Shooting: Houston 14/35, Oklahoma City 8/33

Free Throws: Houston 25/37, Oklahoma City 20/28

1’s and 2’s: Houston 65, Oklahoma City 76

Rebounds: Houston 42, Oklahoma City 43

Turnovers: Houston 12, Oklahoma City 8

I can’t say that fouling Asik was a horrible gamble at first. The element of surprise Read more

NBA Playoff Betting Recap: Denver wins but Golden State moves to 5-0 ATS

05.01.2013     09:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.

The most entertaining series of the first round what was mostly its first dud. Golden State did rally to give Nuggets fans some nausea…and rallied enough to give Nuggets bettors a punch in the gut as Denver (-8) gagged a big lead in a 107-100 finish.

Dog players who lost New Jersey in a million overtimes this past weekend felt that was owed them. Golden State has topped expectations in all five games in this series. We’ve had some fairly consistent tendencies through the five games. Let’s take a look at that.

Series: Golden State leads 3-2 even though an extra game was in Denver

Two-Point Shooting: Golden State leads 4-1

Three-Point Makes: Golden State leads 5-0 (combined 52-35)

Free Throw Makes: Denver leads 5-0 (combined 117-79, yes +38!)

Rebounds: Golden State leads 3-2 (combined +16)

Turnovers: Denver leads 4-1 (combined +9)

1’s and 2’s: Denver leads 5-0 (combined +31)

NBA Playoff Betting Recap: Brooklyn Nets, Houston Rockets Stay Alive

04.30.2013     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Let’s take Monday night’s tripleheader in the order the games were played…

Brooklyn 110, Chicago 91

2-Point Percentage: Chicago 52%, Brooklyn 54%

3-Point Shooting: Chicago 4/12, Brooklyn 6/17

Free Throws: Chicago 13/18, Brooklyn 20/23

1’s and 2’s: Chicago 79, Brooklyn 92

Rebounds: Chicago 33, Brooklyn 44

Turnovers: Chicago 12, Brooklyn 11

Tonight’s game was closer than that final score makes it sound. But, you can see that Brooklyn won all the key stats. It’s not like it was a fluky win on treys or anything.

Chicago still leads the series 3-2. Obviously, it would be Brooklyn leading 3-2 if they hadn’t blown that late 14-point lead over the weekend. It’s interesting that, if you assign 4 points for home court advantage in this series (which looks like what the market is doing), you could make the case that Brooklyn would have won a neutral court series Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NBA Western Conference Playoffs update

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two weeks ago, I broke down the Eastern Conference Playoff Race in this column, concluding (to no surprise) that the Miami Heat are truly deserving of their big chalk, heavy favorite status; clearly the team to beat.

Last week, I got distracted by the upcoming (at the time) NFL Draft; looking to make my point that draft results hold surprisingly little influence over the opening Week 1 pointspreads, and that every prediction you read or hear about ‘Draft Grades’ is likely to be flawed at best, dead wrong at worst.

That being said, one other factor about the NFL Draft was perfectly clear this past weekend.  The better organizations in the NFL are in much better position to succeed than the weaker organizations.  Which is which?  Look no further than a recent recap of Super Bowl champs to identify ‘good’ organizations – squads with a short and long term plan, and the management team to implement that plan.

The Ravens, Giants, Packers, Steelers, Patriots, Colts, Seahawks and 49ers are at the top of my ‘quality organization’ list, and you can assume a priori that those eight organizations Read more
