Inside the Betting Numbers: NFL Week 1

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Throughout the NFL season, Fairway Jay provides a look at weekly box scores, stats and how to utilize the numbers and situations for success. For over a decade, Fairway Jay has kept a proprietary database of statistical information and utilized relevant rushing numbers and statistical guidelines to better assist him in providing pointspread winners.

Week 1 favorites went 10-6 straight up and 7-7-2 against the spread. In division contests, favorites went 3-4 SU and 2-5 ATS. Home underdogs went 5-3 SU and ATS. Totals went 4-9-2 O/U including 1-5-1 in division contests. If you bet New Orleans early you won; late you lost. If you bet St. Louis early you pushed, late you lost. For the ATS records I’m providing, the Saints/Vikings was a push and Cardinals/Rams is a win for the favorite Arizona. The Jaguars/Broncos total was at 40 and bet up to 41 and graded as a push.

Teams that had a meaningful rushing advantage over their opponent (30 or more yards) went 6-2 ATS. The winners were the Dolphins, Steelers, Read more

Betting Preview: LSU Tigers at Vanderbilt Commodores

LSU -9.5 at Vanderbilt O/U 43.5
Recommendation: LSU
Saturday, September 11th – ESPNU

Vanderbilt wasn’t a good offensive team last year, averaging less than 17 points per game while gaining less than 300 yards of total offense against BCS conference competition. The Commodores are likely to be every bit as weak on the offensive side of the ball this year. Head coach Bobby Johnson quit in mid-July; a clear indication that he didn’t see many bright spots for this squad. Johnson’s replacement, career assistant Robbie Caldwell, has his work cut out for him to field a competitive team in 2010.

Vanderbilt quarterback Larry Smith was a disaster last year, throwing only four touchdown passes while completing a dismal 46 percent of his passes. He has a weak receiving corps to work with, utterly devoid of SEC-caliber playmakers. Smith struggled for extended stretches against a mediocre Northwestern stop unit in the opener last Saturday, routinely missing wide open Read more

Dubsdread Course at Cog Hill
7,386 yards; Par 71

Course no. 4 at Cog Hill, knows as ‘Dubsdread’ went through a renovation by Rees Jones following the 2007 tournament. The design of the course was not changed, but all 18 greens were redone with much more contour, tiers and undulation added. The greens are trickier, tough and treacherous. Oak trees line the fairways and significant elevation changes enhance the natural features. Many of the 110 bunkers have been repositioned and made deeper in places with six water hazards coming into play.

The 70 pros remaining must navigate and think their way around this course more than in years past, and playing from the fairway is paramount for good scoring. Tighter landing areas put a premium on control and accuracy and positioning your ball into the greens will be key this week. So while I might normally fade players that lack solid putting skills with tougher greens, we’ll take a lighter stance on that Read more

Betting Preview: Cincinnati Bearcats at Fresno State Bulldogs

Cincinnati at Fresno State -2.5 O/U 58
Recommendation: Over
Saturday, 7:00 pm PT – ESPN2

Last season Fresno State one of the best teams in the country when it came to running the ball thanks to Ryan Matthews. With Matthews gone, the Bulldogs are looking to become more of a passing team in 2010. Head coach Pat Hill stated this month that the passing game might be the "lead hand" to the offense this season. Fresno quarterback Ryan Colburn has shown to be a more than capable passer with 2,459 yards passing and 19 touchdowns last season. If the first 10 days of fall camp were an indication of what's in store during the regular season, the notion that the Bulldogs plan to pass more – especially downfield – isn't just talk. "We definitely have a long-ball threat," Hill said. "We've got some speed on the perimeter and we've got some guys that can really throw the deep ball. That's always the combination you need."

Purdue +11 at Notre Dame O/U 54.5
Recommendation: Purdue
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - NBC

Brian Kelly’s arrival in South Bend is clearly worth something with each previous stop producing plenty of straight up victories and pointspread covers. But even when you factor in his genius, finding much difference between the personnel, talent and speed of both Notre Dame and Purdue remains difficult.

Last season, with 15 returning starters – nine of which on offense including two future second round draft picks – Notre Dame slipped past the Boilermakers 24-21 in West Lafayette. There were also two common opponents with both schools playing Michigan and Michigan State. The Irish lost to Michigan by four and beat MSU by three. Purdue beat Michigan by two and lost to MSU by three.

Purdue does have question marks with a couple injuries and a small decline in talent over the past four years, but they’ve shown the ability to compete against comparable Read more

UCLA at Kansas State -1.5 O/U 45
Recommendation: Kansas State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC

UCLA has won five consecutive season openers, beating some pretty darn good teams in the process (Utah, Tennessee and Stanford, to name three). But the Bruins won’t have it easy as they travel to Manhattan to take on Bill Snyder’s Kansas State Wildcats to open up the 2010 campaign.

Rick Neuheisel’s squad was besieged with injuries in each of the last two seasons, and so far, that trend has continued. In fact, you could make an argument that no team in all of college football has suffered more injuries and attrition than UCLA has since the start of fall camp. Starting quarterback Kevin Prince has been limited since the first day of practice, suffering from a slightly torn back muscle. There are legitimate concerns about Prince’s ability to shake off the rust and throw tight, accurate passes against a live defense, without the full complement of practice time. And with UCLA Read more

Betting Preview: Kentucky Wildcats at Louisville Cardinals

Kentucky -3 at Louisville O/U 49
Recommendation: Kentucky
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT – ABC

You get the sense out of Louisville's camp that there needs to be a bit of rebuilding. First-year head coach Charlie Strong has the pedigree and ability make it happen but it is going to take some time. Every quote and news report on the Cardinals talks about playing hard and finding a new identity with few discussing player personnel and what the team needs to do in order to avoid a seventh straight season of offensive decline. Mike Sanford steps in as offensive coordinator so there's that pesky switch in offense to contend with. The Cardinals also lost two projected starters and a potential contributor to preseason injuries.

As for Kentucky, they now have more talent and speed than Louisville. The transition to Joker Phillips should be no problem as he was essentially running the team during Rich Brooks' final years. When you look back at the Cats in SEC play, their success hinged on health. Read more

Southern Miss at South Carolina -14 O/U 45.5
Recommendation: South Carolina
Thursday, 4:30 pm PT - ESPN

College football kicks off on ESPN as Southern Mississippi visits South Carolina Thursday. The Golden Eagles have gone 7-6 the last two years and split a pair of bowl games under third-year coach Larry Fedora. The former Oklahoma State and Florida offensive coordinator has helped the Eagles’ offense fly the last two years averaging over 30 ppg each season. In addition, USM has a +21 turnover margin the last two years.

However, opening the season in SEC country against one of the stronger defenses in the SEC should be a very tough task. Southern Miss is a 14-point underdog and the line has dipped to 13.5 in places while the total has been bet down from 47 to 45.5. The Golden Eagles do have some solid weapons on offense with talented returning QB Austin Davis at full health and big pro prospect WR DeAndre Brown. However, the offensive line is rebuilding and inexperienced in Read more
