MLB Gambling: Updated odds to win division titles

06.18.2012     10:11 AM     Printer Friendly
Pinnacle is offering Yes/No odds to win the six MLB Divisions. The best value on the board appears to be the Washington Nationals at +118 to win the National League East. The Nationals currently have a four-game lead over Atlanta – a lead that could easily be increased with the Braves in the Bronx for a three-game set followed by three more in Boston. The Nats will need to get creative with Strasburg and Zimmermann in terms of workload but Detwiler is a viable spot starter. Note also that the last three weeks of the season, the Braves, Mets and Marlins play a lot of games against one another while the Nationals play Milwaukee, St. Louis and Philadelphia – the Phillies are an amazing nine games back.

Detroit to win AL Central
Yes -119
No +106

NY Yankees to win AL East

No +124

Texas to win AL West
Yes -387
No +327

Cincinnati to win NL Central
Yes -181
No. +160

Washington to win NL East

LA Dodgers to win NL West

MLB Handicapping: American League now 96-72 in Interleague play

06.18.2012     07:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
FanGraphs breaks down the American League's continued dominance over the National League. Heading into today, only one AL team has a losing record (Cleveland 4-8) vs. the NL.

The AL and NL have squared off in 168 of the 252 scheduled games so far, and the whippersnappers in the American League have pounded their senior circuit brethren. The current totals: 96 wins for the AL, 72 for the NL, good for a .571 winning percentage. It isn’t just a few close games going the AL’s way either, as they’ve outscored the NL 776 to 659.

If you take the Nationals, Dodgers, and Reds out of the picture, the NL is 54-84, a .391 winning percentage.

MLB Betting News: Baltimore's Arrieta more confident after second chance

06.18.2012     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Arrieta) at NY Mets (Dickey) -160 O/U 7

As a result of Brian Matusz' freak accident while bunting, Baltimore's Jake Arrieta was given a second chance in the starting rotation and cashed in by having his best outing of the season (7 IP, 1 ER, 9 Ks vs. Pittsburgh). The confidence-boosting effort earned him the nod for tonight's game against the Mets.

"That's something that I've talked to Hammel a great deal about and one of the things that really helped him turn the corner," Arrieta said. "Instead of picking up the target and the hitter as one big area, he's started to refine his sights to even a small spot on the glove and even take the hitter completely out of the equation.

"In the past, I've placed too much emphasis and focus on the hitter. And by doing that, when your vision Read more

MLB Handicapping: The Yankees just kicked the snot out of the NL East

06.18.2012     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If the New York Yankees win the American League East, they had better send thank you cards to the entire National League East. The Bronx Bombers just ripped off nine straight Interleague wins and did so in dominating fashion, outscoring the opposition 46-19. The pitching staff dropped its seasonal ERA from 3.94 to 3.63. The good news is the Yankees still have six games remaining against the NL East starting tonight at home against Atlanta.

MLB Betting Notes: Bravers send Beachy to DL, recall Jurrjens

06.18.2012     06:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta's Brandon Beachy will hit the 15-day DL with what they are calling a sore elbow (MRI today). Beachy had his last start pushed back and then lasted only 3.2 innings on Saturday before being pulled. Jair Jurrjens will be recalled to take Beachy's place. The Braves could also eventually work Kris Medlen and Julio Teheran into the rotation at some point.

"I'm hoping it's bone spurs still," Beachy said. "It's time to find out for sure, so that's what we're going to do."

Gonzalez said "I don't expect the worst" from Beachy's MRI.

"I expect in 15 days he'll be ready to go," Gonzalez said. "There are plenty of pitchers who have pitched with (bone spurs). That will settle down a little bit."

Father's Day MLB Gambling Pick: Miami Marlins at Tampa Bay Rays

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Johnson) -120 at Tampa Bay (Cobb) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Miami

Off of a grueling and streak breaking 15 inning victory last night, expect the Marlins to regain their confidence for today’s contest. Tampa Bay had won eight straight against Miami before Scott Cousins RBI triple gave them the go ahead and eventual game winning run last night to shake the monkey off their back. But what was even better was closer Heath Bell’s first sign of real dominance this season as he struck out the side to seal the victory. For Miami this afternoon it will be ace Josh Johnson taking the hill and he’s been on an extended streak of impressive performances. Since a road blow up on May 4 at San Diego, Johnson has put together six quality starts in his last seven outings. He’s posted a 2.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, struck out 40 and allowed only 3 home runs during this 46.2 inning span. He’s also had great success in his five career starts against Tampa Bay throwing five quality Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Cleveland offsense continues to slump

06.17.2012     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Lincoln) at Cleveland (Gomez) -140 O/U 9

Cleveland's bats were shut down once against yesterday, adding to what has become a brutal slump over the last seven games (2.4 runs per game, .218 BA, .609 OPS). Today presents a great opportunity to break out with Pittsburgh's Brad Lincoln on the mound. Lincoln has been smacked around since joining the rotation. Jeanmar Gomez (4.72 ERA) though is not a pitcher most bettors feel comfortable supporting beyond -125.

“The issue has been that the bottom of the lineup has been scuffling,” Acta said. “The top of the lineup and middle of the lineup is hanging in there. They’re the ones getting on base. Unfortunately, the bottom of the lineup is coming to the plate when they’re on base.”

Here’s what the Tribe’s last three hitters are batting: Read more

Saturday MLB Betting Free Play: Pittsburgh Pirates at Cleveland Indians

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Burnett) at Cleveland (Jimenez) -130 O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

Cleveland has had ample opportunity of late with its left-hand heavy lineup to smack around a few average righty starters. In practically each instance, they produced next to nothing. In their last seven games, seven straight righty starters have combined for 44.2 innings and a measly 10 earned runs. Simply put, the Tribe can't hit these days. I've been saying it a lot of late, if you have a pitcher who is struggling, get him a start against the Pirates and for six or seven innings all will be cured. Baltimore's Jake Arrieta was so bad they put him in the bullpen. At the last second, he fills in for an injured Brian Matusz and has his best outing of the year (7 IP, 1 ER) earlier this week against the Pirates. Is Ubaldo Jimenez completely trustworthy after looking like his old self the last two outings (13.2 IP, 2 ER, 11 Ks, 1 BB)? Probably not, but the fact that he is moving in the right direction AND Read more

MLB Betting News: Texas' Grimm to make debut vs. Houston

06.16.2012     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston (Harrell) at Texas (Grimm) -195 O/U 10.5

Due to a slew of injuries, Texas was forced to call up rookie right-hander Justin Grimm for today's game against Texas. Here are his Minor League numbers. Here is an extended scouting report.

Grimm's repertoire is fastball/curveball/changeup, with the fastball generally being in the low-90s, though it can touch 95-96 mph, and the curveball being a potential plus pitch. His changeup is a work in progress, and like a lot of the Rangers' A-ball pitchers, how that third pitch develops will likely determine where Grimm's future lies. If the changeup can get to a point where it is a viable third Read more
