College Football Handicapping: Kent State going with two QBs vs. Ball State

09.26.2012     08:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ball State -1 at Kent State O/U 53

Due to a lack of production in the passing game, Kent State is expected to play two quarterbacks against Ball State on Saturday. Starter Spencer Keith is averaging a paltry 4.9 yards per attempt and had yet to throw a touchdown pass.

“I haven’t made a decision on which guy will start, but you’ll see them both some time on Saturday,” said Hazell. “On (Sunday) we practiced 20 periods and David took all the reps with the (starters). On Tuesday, Spencer’s going to get all the snaps with the starters. We’ll see how things go on Tuesday.”

College Football Betting: Tennessee going through growing pains with 3-4 defense

Tennessee at Georgia -13 O/U 60.5

Good article on 3-4 defenses in the SEC. It looks like Tennessee is experiencing the same type of struggles Georgia endured when it made the switch under defensive coordinator Todd Grantham back in 2010. During that initial season, the Bulldogs allowed 5.64 yards per play and 355.8 yards per game vs. the SEC. Last season, there was significant improvement (4.22 ypp, 247.9 ypg vs. SEC). Tennessee's 3-4 defense under first-year DC (and former Alabama LB coach) Sal Sunseri was gashed each of the last two weeks against Akron and Florida.

"From a coverage standpoint, we are pretty complex, and I think that you've got to get some reps in it," Grantham said of his system. "I think the best thing we've done is to maintain our consistency from day one here. As players develop and get that Read more

NCAAF Gambling: Western Michigan-Toledo now a PK following Carder announcement

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toledo at Western Michigan pk O/U 57

The handicap of this weekend's MAC showdown between Toledo and Western Michigan just got a bit more difficult. Bronco quarterback Alex Carder has been ruled out due to a hand injury. Tyler Van Tubbergen, who filled in for Carder last week, is expected to start. Van Tubbergen has been around for three years and has put up decent numbers: 49-of-64, 260 yards, 7 TDs, 2 INTs – nearly all of that production came in last year's 68-19 win over woeful Akron. He looked a little skittish against UConn last week but should be more comfortable facing a Toledo defense that currently ranks 111th nationally.

“It’s a big loss, but it’s football,” Cubit said. “You just go in there and get it done. Last year, he got hurt and you have another guy go in. We have a lot of Read more

College Football Betting: Tulane getting desperate at quarterback position

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana-Monroe -18 at Tulane O/U 56

Thing have gotten so bad for Tulane that they are bringing players back who left the team in favor of a different sport. Quarterbacks Ryan Griffin and Devin Powell are banged up and may not be available to play Saturday. That leaves DJ Ponder who returned to the team in mid-August after a stint playing professional baseball.  Ponder has experience having saw action during both the 2010 and 2011 seasons. The only problem is he's not very good: 26-for-62, 216 yards, 0 TDs, 5 INTs. Head coach Curtis Johnson will determine who will start on Thursday.

“Yeah, I’m just excited to see him play. I want to see him play,” Tulane Coach Curtis Johnson said. “He looked good today, he had a great practice.”

“D.J.’s been here five years,” Griffin Read more

College Football Betting: Illinois players not pleased with DC play calling

09.25.2012     08:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Penn State at Illinois -1.5 O/U 41.5

A few weeks ago we posted a blog on and how there was mass confusion with Illinois' defense during its 45-14 loss to Arizona. Following last week's 52-24 loss to Louisiana Tech, we now have players questioning the playing calling of first-year defensive coordinator Tim Banks. Last year under Vic Koenning, the Illini relied heavily on the blitz and it paid off as the unit ranked 7th nationally in total defense and 6th in sacks with 41. Head coach Tim Beckman defended the play calling saying that they were forced to adjust due to ASU and LT's up-tempo Read more

College Football Betting: Analyzing Week 5 early line moves

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A quick look at some early College Football Week 5 line moves.

Texas Tech at Iowa State
CRIS Opener: Texas Tech -1
CRIS Current: Texas Tech -3
Important game for Iowa State, who comes in off of a bye week. After facing TTU, the Cyclones play at TCU, vs. K-State, at Oklahoma State, vs. Baylor, vs. Oklahoma and at Texas. Tech is off of a bye as well. Always tough to get a gauge on the quality of the Red Raiders with three cupcakes thus far. -3 likely to be the peak number. If you like ISU, I'd grab some while you can.

San Jose State at Navy
CRIS Opener: Navy pk
CRIS Current: San Jose -2.5
Two teams going in opposite direction in the betting markets. Last season, San Jose was catching +6 at home and beat the Midshipmen 27-24. The Spartans' resume looks strong with three-point loss at Stanford and four-point road win at SDSU last week. They're the better team even though we just saw a little buy-back on Navy from +3 to +2.5.

Texas at Oklahoma State
CRIS Opener: Oklahoma State -2
CRIS Current: Texas -3

College Football Betting: SEC News and Notes Week 4

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
No real surprises in the SEC this weekend except of course for the ongoing circus currently taking place in Fayetteville. Arkansas got quarterback Tyler Wilson back in the lineup for its non-conference home tilt against Rutgers, but still took it on the chin, 35-26. Wilson threw for 419 yards and three touchdowns, but was also intercepted twice. Arkansas’ defense was torched again, giving up 35 points and 525 yards of total offense to what had been a mediocre Rutgers offense. They have now allowed over 1,800 yards in four games and they face another test this week at Texas A&M.

The closest thing to an upset was Auburn’s near miss at home against LSU. The Tigers fought valiantly, but couldn’t muster enough offense to pull off the upset. Auburn held LSU to 12 points, but their offense had just 183 total yards and committed three turnovers. LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger didn’t set the world on fire, but finished a solid 15-of-27 for 169 yards and no interceptions in his first SEC road start.

The newest SEC member, Missouri, found out how tough life on the road in the SEC can be at South Carolina. The Gamecocks Read more
