College Football Gambling: Purdue names sophomore Etling starting QB

08.18.2014     12:57 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There weren't many BCS conference passing attacks as bad as Purdue last season as the Boilermakers ranked 108th nationally in QB Rating (111.8). Rob Henry was nothing short of a disaster and midseason the Boilermakers went the youth route with freshman Danny Etling. Etling took his lumps but did close the season strong (67%, 670 yards, 6 TDs, 2 INTs) albeit against much softer competition (Penn State, Illinois, and Indiana). Second-year head coach Darrell Hazell recently named Etling the team's Week 1 starter vs. Western Michigan. The Boilermakers are currently 11-point home chalk.

College Football Betting: Tennessee Volunteers go with Worley

08.14.2014     02:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Gotta love it when coaches announce their starting quarterback and tell us Player X gives the team its best chance to win.  What they really want to say is, "Listen, there is no way in hell I'm starting a true frosh or the JC transfer who we wasted a scholarship on. That leaves the guy who played last year even though he stunk. Next question." You can't help but feel that is the situation for Tennessee’s Butch Jones who earlier today announced that Justin Worley earned the starting gig. In four games vs. the SEC last year, Worley's QB rating was 108.3. The Vols are 6.5-point home favorites over Utah State to open the season.

"Right now Justin Worley gives this football team and this football program the best opportunity to win," Jones said via GoVols247.

College Football Gambling: TCU tries to revamp pedestrian offense

08.14.2014     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
TCU will attempt to spread out its offense more this year. Head coach Gary Patterson brought in co-offensive coordinators Doug Meacham (Houston) and Sonny Cumbie (Texas Tech). TCU ranked 9th in the Big XII in total offense last season (344.8 ypg).

"I feel we get to better utilize the speed and the size and the talent that we have at receivers and running back," said David Porter, who had a team-high five touchdown catches last season. "I feel it was a great change, transitioning into this new offense."

College Football Handicapping: Texas Tech names Webb starting QB

08.14.2014     06:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas Tech's quarterback situation appears more settled this season with Davis Webb recently named the team's starter. Webb, who won Holiday Bowl MVP honors, split time with Baker Mayfield, who bolted for Oklahoma. Both players were freshmen last season which played a big part in TTU's -14 turnover margin (123rd nationally). The Red Raiders were also prone to frequent penalties (75.2 penalty yards per game, 124th nationally).

"He's got a chance to be really, really good this year," Kingsbury said. "He's not going to try to take off all of the time out of the pocket. That's not really his game. He plays to his strengths, which is smart."

College Football Betting: Notre Dame names Golson starting quarterback

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following 2013's year-long suspension, Notre Dame announced that Everett Golson will be the team's starting quarterback. As a redshirt freshman Golson played in 12 games, including the National Championship, and compiled a 131.02 QB rating. Golson will replace Tommy Rees who threw for 3,257 yards, 27 TDs, and 13 INTs as a senior. The Irish open the season as 22.5-point home favorites vs. Rice.

Sportsmemo's newest handicapper, Paul Stone, has posted a College Football Season Over/Under Wins Report that includes six recommendations and written analysis. You can purchase Paul's report for only $99. The report will be included for free with purchase of Stone’s August/September CFB ($299) or Full Season ($999). Below is a free recommendation.

West Virginia UNDER 4.5 (-120 at Heritage, -135 at Bookmaker)

Prior to becoming the main man on campus in Morgantown in 2011, Dana Holgorsen gained a deserved reputation as an offensive guru during stops at Texas Tech, Houston and Oklahoma State. Suffice it to say, things have not gone as planned in his first three years as the Mountaineers' gridiron CEO. After going 15-3 in his first season and a half, Holgorsen's troops have sputtered and stumbled to a 6-14 mark over their past 20 games, with few reasons for optimism during 2014. Over the past two seasons, a porous West Virginia defense has given up an average of 40.5 points per game in conference play, while the offense has been unable to replace the likes of departed star Read more

College Football Handicapping: The impact returning experience has on the betting markets

08.13.2014     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Expanding on yesterday’s Sportsmemo Podcast discussion on the impact Phil Steele continues to have on the early season college football betting markets. We took the top 10 most and least experienced teams according to Steele’s Combined Experience Chart and looked at their Week 1 lines moves based on CRIS’s opening and current numbers. Not surprisingly a majority of the “experienced” teams with boarded Week 1 games were bet whereas the “least experienced” teams were bet against.

Top 10 Most Experienced Teams - Week 1
UTSA: +12.5 to +11 at Houston
UL-Lafayette: Non-boarded vs. Southern
Indiana: Non-boarded vs. Indiana State
Central Michigan: Non-boarded vs. UT-Chattanooga
Mississippi State: -29 to -31 vs. Southern Miss
Auburn: -21.5 vs. Arkansas (-21 or -20.5 at other offshore shops)
Houston: -12.5 to -11 vs. UTSA
Idaho: +34.5 to +35.5 at Florida
Maryland: Non-boarded vs. James Madison
Army: Bye Week

College Football Betting: Marshall's defense should dominate foes

08.13.2014     06:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We spoke on Tuesday's podcast about Marshall's improvement on the defensive end last year under defensive coordinator Chuck Heater. The Thundering Herd went from 103rd to 35th in terms of total defense. This year's group returns eight starters and will have the luxury of facing one of the easiest schedules in the country - particularly from an offensive perspective. Below are some quick offensive notes on MU's opponents this season. Marshall is a 24-point road favorite vs. Miami-Ohio for Week 1.

Miami-Ohio - 124th total offense LY
Rhode Island - Ranked 206th Sagarin LY, two spots ahead of EMU
Ohio - Only 3 returning starters on offense, lost senior QB
Akron - 108th total offense LY
Old Dominion - First year FBS
MTSU - Only 4 returning starters on offense, lost senior QB
FIU - Worst offense in the nation LY
Florida Atlantic - 83rd total offense LY, new head coach/system
