College Football Handicapping: Houston starts over with former Ohio State OC Herman

07.21.2015     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After a 35-17 record under the watch of Kevin Sumlin, the Houston Cougars weren't satisfied with three years of slightly above average football under Tony Levine. They let Levin go and hired up-and-comer Tom Herman who spent the last three years as Ohio State's offensive coordinator. Herman gutted the coaching staff and brought in two very highly regarded coordinators in Major Applewhite (OC, Texas) and Todd Orlando (DC, Utah State). The Cougars return 16 starters and are the second pick (+175) in the ACC behind Memphis (+105).

College Football Betting: Summer pointspreads offer varying opinions

07.10.2015     09:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some noteworthy opinions on Week 1's matchup between Purdue and Marshall. When it comes to posting a midsummer lines, a vast majority is based on last year's results, this year's returnees, and whether or not your team has a quarterback with experience. In the case of the Thundering Herd, they return only 12 starters and lost quarterback Rakeem Cato (3,903 yards, 40 TDs, 13 INTs) and wide receiver Tommy Shuler (92 catches, 1,138 yards). Marshall won 13 games with its only loss coming in overtime vs. Western Kentucky. Purdue meanwhile returns 18 starters but that is perhaps not a good thing as the Boilermakers won only three games last season and suffered a 21-point to Central Michigan at home.

As for the Week 1's pointspread, check out the varying opinion:

BetOnline opened Purdue as a -2.5 road favorite but a flood of Marshall money had the Herd -4 as of earlier this week. Las Vegas' Stratosphere opened the game Marshall -4. Cantor had a far different opinion, opening the Herd as -10 home favorites. Some Purdue money drove the line down to its current price of -7.5 while BetOnline adjusted its line to -6.5.

Ringleader of Toledo point shaving scandal gets 5-year prison term

06.18.2015     10:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Damn. The guy at the heart of the Toledo point shaving scandal got a 5+ year prison term. And we can't help but chuckle at running back Quinton Broussard who purposely fumbled against UTEP in the 2005 GMAC Bowl. It didn't exactly help as the Rockets rolled 45-13 as 3-point chalk.

"He was the prime actor in those conspiracies," the judge said. "The result of his actions was not simply to degrade those sport or athletic events. He also ended up destroying the careers of the people he bribed, the athletes at the University of Toledo and at least one jockey."

NFL Handicapping: Week 1 lines are up but no one's betting...yet

05.21.2015     06:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two weeks ago, CRIS posted lines on every Week 1 NFL game -- not the first sportsbook it do so but arguably the most important. Betting on the NFL is really popular -- way more so that the current lineup of MLB, NBA and NHL Playoffs and Arena Football. And despite providing bettors with a 3+ month head start, there has been literally no movement in the betting markets. Sure, the limits are reduced and a lot of teams still have various questions regarding personnel. But unlike college football, everyone has a pretty good understanding of who's going to take the field in Week 1. Yet, of the 16 lines games, not one has moved off of a key number both side and total -- we're not counting the Tom Brady fiasco. There are currently nine games sitting on 2.5, 3, and 6 -- numbers that typically lend themselves to opinion. And while CRIS obviously knows what they are doing when it comes to hanging an NFL line, one would think bettors would want to jump in and take advantage. Not the case. Based on last year's line history most Week 1 games started to move in July and even more so after preseason play got underway. Until then, if you see something you like, take a shot, but if you think Read more
