College Football Handicapping: The impact returning experience has on the betting markets

08.13.2014     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Expanding on yesterday’s Sportsmemo Podcast discussion on the impact Phil Steele continues to have on the early season college football betting markets. We took the top 10 most and least experienced teams according to Steele’s Combined Experience Chart and looked at their Week 1 lines moves based on CRIS’s opening and current numbers. Not surprisingly a majority of the “experienced” teams with boarded Week 1 games were bet whereas the “least experienced” teams were bet against.

Top 10 Most Experienced Teams - Week 1
UTSA: +12.5 to +11 at Houston
UL-Lafayette: Non-boarded vs. Southern
Indiana: Non-boarded vs. Indiana State
Central Michigan: Non-boarded vs. UT-Chattanooga
Mississippi State: -29 to -31 vs. Southern Miss
Auburn: -21.5 vs. Arkansas (-21 or -20.5 at other offshore shops)
Houston: -12.5 to -11 vs. UTSA
Idaho: +34.5 to +35.5 at Florida
Maryland: Non-boarded vs. James Madison
Army: Bye Week

College Football Betting: Marshall's defense should dominate foes

08.13.2014     06:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We spoke on Tuesday's podcast about Marshall's improvement on the defensive end last year under defensive coordinator Chuck Heater. The Thundering Herd went from 103rd to 35th in terms of total defense. This year's group returns eight starters and will have the luxury of facing one of the easiest schedules in the country - particularly from an offensive perspective. Below are some quick offensive notes on MU's opponents this season. Marshall is a 24-point road favorite vs. Miami-Ohio for Week 1.

Miami-Ohio - 124th total offense LY
Rhode Island - Ranked 206th Sagarin LY, two spots ahead of EMU
Ohio - Only 3 returning starters on offense, lost senior QB
Akron - 108th total offense LY
Old Dominion - First year FBS
MTSU - Only 4 returning starters on offense, lost senior QB
FIU - Worst offense in the nation LY
Florida Atlantic - 83rd total offense LY, new head coach/system
Southern Miss - 116th total offense Read more

College Football Gambling: Alabama focused on stopping up-tempo offenses

08.12.2014     08:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Alabama talks about better preparing for up-tempo offenses. The cause for concern - at least from the media's perspective - was the infamous Texas A&M game in which the Aggies rolled up 628 yards (and still lost, 49-42). Outside of that, the Crimson Tide were still a top five stop unit. UA opponents ran the second fewest plays per game (61.8) in the nation last season.

"There's a lot of ways to improve on that whether it's being in shape, cutting weight, play more snaps, play more people," Smart said. "So you've got to have more depth. There's a lot of things we can do to hopefully improve on that and try to play those style of offenses better."

"You know, in all honesty, guys, you all make way too much of this," Saban said. "I mean, the last game (Auburn) had 21 points against us with 30 seconds to go in the game, and I don't think anybody held them to 21 points all year long. I saw them score 60 in the SEC Championship Game or whatever."

College Football Betting: Wake Forest goes with true frosh QB

08.12.2014     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wake Forest first-year head coach Dave Clawson announced that true freshman John Wolford will be the team's Week 1 starting quarterback. The Demon Deacons are currently 2.5-point road favorites vs. UL-Monroe.

“John Wolford is going to be our starting quarterback,’’ Clawson said. “We made that decision (Monday) after watching the tape of (Sunday’s) scrimmage.

“Not just last night in the scrimmage, but consistently through camp he has executed the offense at the highest level. And I think he gives us our best opportunity to win football games.’’

College Football Betting: Young Tulsa offense starts from scratch

08.06.2014     06:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tulsa took one of the biggest nosedives of any team in college football last season; 11-3 in 2012 to 3-9.  During the offseason, the Golden Hurricane fired offensive coordinator Greg Peterson and kept thing in-house by promoting offensive line coach Denver Johnson. The offense will be pretty green with only one senior in the starting lineup. Sophomore Dane Evan is expected to start at quarterback after completing 43% of his passes to go with a 4-10 TD-to-INT ratio in eight games.

"Our offense was dysfunctional," coach Bill Blankenship said Monday at the team's media day event. "By the end of the season we were pitiful. We felt like we had to retool our offense."

College Football Handicapping: Iowa in search of big plays in 2014

08.06.2014     06:08 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Iowa's offense made strides last year, increasing 66.5 yards per game from 2012. But offensive coordinator Greg Davis is asking for a lot more, particularly when it comes to picking up big chunks of yards. Last season Iowa had only 45 plays from scrimmage that went for 20 yards or more (102nd nationally).

“I always want to see more production,” he said, noting that the unit should improve if only because “they’re much more comfortable [with the system].”

“You hope [improvement] happens, that’s the biggest thing,” starting quarterback Jake Rudock said. “We have a lot of guys coming back, which I think is helpful. And I think it allows for the ability to potentially do more.”
