College Football Betting Preview: Ole Miss Rebels at Texas Longhorns

Mississippi at Texas
Saturday, 5 pm PT
CRIS Opener:
Texas -3.5 O/U 65
CRIS Current: Texas -2.5 O/U 64.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Texas -1
Brent Crow's Recommendation: Mississippi

Much has been made of the firing of Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz and the hiring of Greg Robinson to fill his post. Obviously, Mack Brown has a problem with his defense and the hiring of Robinson, who we last saw having terrible results as Michigan’s defensive coordinator under Rich Rodriguez, isn’t likely to fix things. Texas allowed 29.2 ppg last year, giving up 404 yards per game, which was an increase of 7 ppg and 98 ypg over 2011. After BYU ran through them for 559 yards on the ground last week, the decision was made to fire Diaz and hire Robinson, who has supposedly been watching video of the Horns from his home in Los Angeles.

Robinson will have all of three practices to get the Horns Read more

Will Alabama take advantage of it bye week again this week at College Station? The Tide is 7-3 SU under Saban after a bye or more than a week of preparation, but it seems like that all of the big games they’ve played over the past three years have all been after a bye week. Additionally, all three losses came against teams that also had a bye or extra time to prepare for a bowl. The first thing Saban does is not start team-specific preparations too soon.

"I think that you can work too long on one team and the players get bored and lose focus after awhile," Saban said. "That's not really a good thing."

He said that a week and a half before the Virginia Tech game, but it applies to bye weeks too. Alabama has been practicing all week but only started Texas A&M preparations on Monday. Bama certainly needed some time to work on its offense after gaining just 202 yards against Virginia Tech, its lowest output on offense since 2008.

Ole Miss has a big revenge game against reeling Texas this week on the road after dropping a 66-31 decision in Oxford last year. They will most likely be without their best cover corner Charles Read more

College Football Handicapping: First half and second half totals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The growing popularity of first half and halftime betting indicated to me that it was something I needed to begin charting. Last season was the first one in which I kept complete records and now three weeks into 2013 it seems like a good time to use this week’s article on examining some early team results.

Extreme Teams: (Teams that have had the same result in all four halves thus far)

Central Florida – The Knights have used their defense and lack of opponents’ offense through two games to record unders in each of their four halves of play. On paper it seems as if they should have been able to at least record one over since their totals haven’t been set that high and their skill position players and offensive line have held dominant advantages. However, their defense has simple been lights out allowing just 4.2 and 3.5 yards per play in their first two games. They’ve also been in a sizeable lead position at halftime which has led them to play methodical, clock draining second half football. This week presents their first real test as they travel to Penn State which possesses a Read more

College Football Betting Preview: UCLA Bruins at Nebraska Cornhuskers

UCLA at Nebraska
Saturday, 9 am PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -4 O/U 68
CRIS Current: Nebraska -4.5 O/U 70
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Nebraska -1.5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Over

With the nature of college football these days and the endless number of potent offenses in existence, sometimes you can’t shy away from betting a game over the total even when dealing with a total of 70 like we have with the UCLA Bruins and Nebraska Cornhuskers. This game has shootout written all over it when we account for the offensive weapons and defensive deficiencies of both squads.

UCLA has the exact type of offense, led by dual-threat quarterback Brett Hundley, that can cause Nebraska’s suspect defense fits. Hundley had an impressive performance in the Bruins opener against Nevada throwing for a pair of touchdowns and rushing for a pair in their 58-20 blowout win over Nevada. UCLA racked up Read more

College Football Betting: Week 3 Injury Report

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana Tech sophomore running back Kenneth Dixon enjoyed a banner freshman campaign, rushing for 1,194 yards and 27 touchdowns while averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Dixon sustained a knee injury in last week’s 27-14 win over Lamar and he’s questionable Thursday night vs. Tulane. Even if Dixon can’t go, I don’t know that bettors should downgrade Tech’s offense. Before Dixon became the starter last season, fellow freshman Tevin King started three games and rushed for 369 yards and five TDs. King, who averaged 8.0 ypc before suffering a season-ending injury, replaced Dixon when he went down last week. He responded by exploding for 182 yard rushing on 20 carries. As of early Wednesday, most books had the Bulldogs favored by -7.5 over the Green Wave.

TCU senior quarterback Casey Pachall is out until at least late October with a forearm injury. Therefore, sophomore signal caller Trevone Boykin will get the starting nod Thursday night at Texas Tech. Boykin started nine games as a redshirt freshman in 2012. He threw for 2,054 yards with a 15/10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Boykin also rushed for 417 yards and three TDs. In relief of Pachall in Read more

College Football Gambling: USC's issues may also be in the locker room

09.11.2013     08:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Every year, there are always one or two teams that have issues with players and coaching staffs (often lame duck head coaches) not being on the same page. This typically doesn't occur however until late in the season following a bad loss or when preseason expectations fall way short. It is well documented that USC has had on-field issues, particularly at the quarterback position, but considering last year's debacle, this is a potentially toxic situation that could – or has – lead to a divided locker room. News recently came out that following the loss to Washington, star wide receiver Marqise Lee told reporters that there would be a "players only" meeting. Lane Kiffin denied it took place and later said those types of things are essentially a waste of time. As bettors we're trained to err on the side of caution when it comes to stories that are often inflated by the media – this perhaps being an example. But we're dealing with a very opinionated coach at a school where expectations are very high. The loss Read more

College Football Betting: South Carolina's youthful defense struggles

Vanderbilt at South Carolina -13.5 O/U 50.5

Following last week's 41-30 loss at Georgia, Steve Spurrier was fairly candid about just how young his defense is. The Gamecocks currently have 13 freshmen and sophomores on their two-deep.

“I look out there and see all those redshirt freshman and sophomore guys and I’m starting to wonder if we’re expecting a little too much from those guys,” Spurrier said after Saturday’s loss. “But it is a freshman-laden defense out there and they’re going to take their lumps. We’ve got to get creative.”

College Football Handicapping: Estimated Market Power Ratings Week 3

I think we’re getting closer to capturing the market. Not quite there yet. There were fewer head scratchers this week when comparing the transitions from last week.

It may be a mess for awhile in the 45-65 range because of volatility. A 55 may play like a 48 against quality but a 57 against other mid-50 teams. College sports are always messy because of the sheer volume of teams, and the fact that kids are inconsistent from week to week.

If you’re new to the site, these aren’t my “personal” ratings for all the teams. I’m not following college football nearly closely enough to have any real sense of probably the bottom 80 yet. This is my guess at how the market has the teams rated. I create “couplets” each week that match the Vegas spread (allotting 3 points for home field advantage), then I try to figure out where that couplet goes within the big scale. Over a few weeks, it’s not hard to hone in on a fairly good Read more
