I've been posting updates in the Sportsmemo forum about some of the MLB division races. In the American League Central, the White Sox (59-45) hold a one game lead over the Twins (59-47) while the Tigers (52-52) have fallen hard with injuries and poor play. I've also been on a solid winning streak, posting back-to-back profitable months in June and July. Join me for more diamond dandies as I pound out the profits during the closing months of the season.

Here is an update on how hot the White Sox have been as the teams push for a playoff spot and a shot at the AL pennant. Stats from

• The Chicago White Sox have won six of their last seven games, 18 of 25 and 35 of 47 as they open an eight-game trip today with a doubleheader in Detroit .

• During the 35-12 run, the

Rumors that Masoli could be headed to UNLV this fall

07.22.2010     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Reports indicate that former Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli could be headed to UNLV. Over the last month, there have been rumors about the embattled signal caller heading to Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, Ole Miss and numerous FCS schools. Whoever takes a shot with Masoli could see him in uniform this coming fall. Fairway Jay passed along a note that the Masoli to UNLV move is far from a done deal. One source claimed that UNLV already has what it needs at QB (huh?) and is moving towards more of a pro-style offense which is the complete opposite of what was run in Eugene.

"Seriously, could there be a better match for the legally challenged former Oregon QB than Sin City? And on the football side, new Rebels coach Bobby Hauck certainly needs all the help he can get," ESPN

Betting longshot cashes in at British Open

While many off shore sportsbooks failed to list Louis Oosthuizen in their win pools, the Hilton in Las Vegas had the South African longshot at odds of 200-1.
Las Vegas Hilton Sportsbook Director Jay Kornegay noted that three tickets were purchased on Oosthuizen to win totaling $19.  Still, a $10 ticket for $2,000 return is not too bad.

If you were able to fire at Oosthuizen after round 1, you cashed tickets from 22-1 to 25-1 at some major offshore shops.  Oosthuizen was able to benefit from a favorable draw in round 2, but still had to deal with stronger winds while the players who went off later were called off the course for over one hour before returning in brutally difficult conditions.

Oosthuizen won his first European Tour event in March this year and moved into the top-50 world rank at that time.  So while he was listed at very long odds Read more

Fairway Jay passed this note along about the Cincinnati Reds...   Per the Reds media relations office:

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the Reds have the easiest remaining schedule in the majors based on the combined won-lost records of their remaining opponents and weighted by the number of games against each team (.464), followed by St. Louis (.473), Houston (.476), the Mets (.482) and Minnesota (.484).

Baltimore has the toughest remaining schedule (.541), followed by the Dodgers (.523), Arizona (.521),  Toronto (.518) and Oakland (.517).

The 2010 Open Championship – St. Andrews
Here’s a look at some of the players in the top-20 world rankings and my thoughts on them at this week’s Open Championship at St. Andrews.

Tiger Woods – Still holding onto the world no. 1 ranking despite no Tour wins since late 2009. Woods has won the last two Open Championships at St. Andrews, setting a record score of 19-under-par to win by eight shots in 2000, and winning the 2005 championship by five shots (-14). His personal life and mental strength have been put to the ultimate test over the past eight months, and Woods has battled his putter, swing and off-course issues but still managed to finish top-5 at the Masters and U.S. Open. Now he turns to a new Nike putter for better roll and results on the slower greens. He should contend again at St. Andrews with a shot Sunday to secure another Claret Jug on his self-proclaimed Read more

MLB Youth Movement: Rookies who make an impact

Submitted by Fairway Jay

We’ve seen some pretty awesome debuts by Major League players this season, and last month we posted a list of players that made their MLB debut in May. Well, June featured baseball’s most anticipated debut and last year’s No. 1 overall pick in the MLB amateur draft did not disappoint. Stephen Strasburg struck out 14 Pirates hitters and allowed just two runs on four hits in seven innings pitched. Strasburg followed up that electric debut with a win at Cleveland in his first road start. He finished the month of June with a 2-2 record and 2.27 ERA, .216 BAA including 47 strikeouts and just seven walks in 31 innings.   The Cleveland Indians called up switch-hitting catcher Carlos Santana June 11th and the highly touted 24-year-old made his debut batting third for the Indians in their 7-2 win over the Nationals. Santana went 0-3 but threw out a base runner in the first inning. He hit .310 in over 300 minor league games with solid power and production and for Read more

Interleague Betting Free Play: Detroit at New York

06.22.2010     02:16 PM     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Fairway Jay   Detroit (Verlander) at NY Mets (Niese) +125
Recommendation: New York

The Tigers are hot as they hit the road after a 8-1 homestand. Along with bettors, the Tigers are confident tonight with their ace Justin Verlander (8-4, 3.54 ERA) on the mound. Careful here, as Detroit is up to a –145 road favorite in places and you can bet the best price on the Mets (+125) at one of the world's top shops, Must note that Detroit's recent run was against last place teams Arizona, Washington and Pittsburgh. Verlander is one of the best in the American League with a .211 BAA and less than seven hits allowed per nine innings. He’s thrown seven straight quality starts, but his pitch count is mounting and he faced just one quality hitting team his last six starts. Verlander has thrown at least 112 pitches in 10 of his last 12 starts and that has to wear on the power pitcher at some point. Verlander is 11-1 with a ERA under 3.00 his last 15 Read more

Friday MLB Free Play: Cleveland at Pittsburgh

Cleveland (Carmona) +110 at Pittsburgh (Maholm)
Recommendation: Cleveland

Interleague play continues with a pair of bottom feeders battling Friday night at PNC Park. The Indians (25-40) have lost four in a row, but the Pirates (23-43) are in a free-fall, losers of 11-straight games all as underdog. Pittsburgh is battling but their psyche is hurting. Now money is coming in on the Pirates as favorite against Cleveland, yet the Indians have the better starting pitcher and more efficient offense recently. The Indians have scored 51 runs over their last eight games, all at home. Cleveland faced some dominant starting pitchers in their previous 10-game road trip, yet they scored 7, 10 and 13 runs while doing damage against left-handed starting pitchers Mark Buehrle (White Sox), John Danks (White Read more

U.S. Open Betting Preview
Pebble Beach
7,040-yard, Par 71
Here are some of my thoughts, projections and “Fairway Forecasts” for this year’s 110th U.S. Open. This year’s U.S. Open championship at Pebble Beach will play to par 71 and 7,040 yards. Check out the fly over video, but understand that the golf course plays much different this week for the U.S. Open than in February when Pebble Beach is the host course for the AT&T National Pro-Am Tour event.

As you watch the action, know that the opening seven holes play downwind and are considered “scoring holes”. No. 7 is a scenic and short par 3; just 109 yards and a flip sand wedge unless the wind is blowing. The par 5 at No. 6 will be one of the easiest holes on the course and players must score early and be prepared for the “rough” ahead. Phil Mickelson Read more
