Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: WSOP edition

07.09.2012     11:05 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even the sharpest bettors in the world don’t spend 100% of their time focusing on sports. This week in particular is arguably the lightest sports betting week of the entire year.

Baseball is on their annual All Star Break through Friday. There’s no Canadian Football or Arena Football scheduled until Thursday, and between the two leagues, the dozen games on tap for the week offer fewer potential betting opportunities than a single day with a full slate of MLB action. Wimbeldon is in the rear view mirror for tennis bettors, as is the Euro 2012 for soccer bettors and UFC 148 for MMA bettors. It’s the time of year where most professional bettors are either on vacation or engaging in another positive expectation activity. Here in Las Vegas, that activity usually involves the World Series of Poker.

In the four decades since its inception, the World Series of Poker has grown from a tiny tournament attracting only a small handful of bettors into the modern behemoth at the Rio; a true spectacle even for seasoned pros. The 2012 WSOP features a whopping 61 different bracelet events over a more than six week span. In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Read more

Sunday MLB Betting Free Play: Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Jurrjens) at Philadelphia (Worley) -125 O/U 9
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Atlanta’s a confident team right now having won three straight and four of five with all four wins being by three or more runs. The offense has scored 29 runs in their last five games and the starting staff has rattled off four straight quality wins. The surge has seen them now get to within 0.5 game of the lead in the NL Wild Card race. Conversely, Philadelphia is an absolute mess after 86 games at 37-49, 14 games behind division leading Washington. Local media, the fan base and the team are all extremely frustrated and the Phils are an inch away from being a trade deadline seller. All that being said, Philadelphia looks to be in a good spot today against the Braves and RH starter Jair Jurrjens. While Jurrjens numbers in his three starts since coming off the DL look real good (2-0 / 1.20 WHIP / 1.47 ERA), there are numbers inside the overall façade that have us looking to fade him Read more

NFL Gambling News: Oddsmakers agree that later start time means bigger handle

UPDATE

Article from ESPN's Chad Millman on the NFL's decision to push back the start of the late afternoon games.

"It will help, there is no doubt. And since they are doing it, I'd like to see the league stagger the schedule even more," says Vaccaro. "Let's start some games at 10 a.m. Vegas time and others at 11 a.m. And let's turn Monday nights into a doubleheader every week."

"For years, sports-book directors have been saying this was necessary," longtime Vegas reporter Dave Tuley told me last night. Added Lucky's Jimmy Vaccaro, "The 4:15 start had been getting tight. Now I don't think we will ever shut anyone out."

MLB Betting Update: Clearly not right, Cubs give Samardzija another start

07.02.2012     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Chicago Cubs (Samardzija) at Atlanta (Hanson) -190 O/U 8

For whatever reason, the Chicago Cubs will continue to roll the dice with Jeff Samardzija who is clearly wearing down in his first season as a full-time MLB starter. Samardzija has already matched last year's inning total and is just over 50 away from hitting his professional career high (141.2 in 2007). In the span of just over a month, Samardzija's ERA has jumped from 3.00 to 5.05. His stat line from his last four starts: 18.1 IP, 25 ER, 14 Ks, 10 BBs, 4 HRs, 12.27 ERA, 1.033 OPS. And if that weren't bad enough, manager Dale Sveum was quoted as saying, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t concerned a little bit with the numbers and execution Read more

Sunday MLB Betting Free Play: Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners

Boston (Doubront) -130 at Seattle (Vargas) O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

The lack of offense in Safeco Field has been a topic of discussion inside the sabermetric community this week as pitchers have had more than the normal success here this season. Seattle has now gone under the total in eight consecutive games and Manager Eric Wedge had a 20+ minute meeting with his club prior to batting practice yesterday to see if he could get the offense jump started. Their three runs, .231 game batting average and .590 game OPS aren’t exactly what the skipper had in mind but today looks like a real opportunity for Mariners run production to break through. Boston starter Felix Doubront has not been very good over his last four games allowing a whopping 57 total bases in the 23 inning span. The lefty has a 1.52 WHIP and 6.65 ERA in those contests with location being an admitted problem in his last start. Safeco as mentioned above has been a park that among other things eats up fly balls but Read more

Sheldon Adelson's impact on internet gambling in Nevada

06.28.2012     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Las Vegas Sun has an article about the potential impact casino giant Sheldon Adelson could have on online gambling in Nevada. Despite working in the industry, Adelson isn't a fan of online gambling. His reason? Or at least the one he wants everyone to believe: It will cause addiction and be too accessible to minors. Sounds about right.

“He’s gone from, ‘I’m against it, but I won’t be active in it,’ to making more public statements against it, and now he’s told important people in Congress he’s against it,” one lobbyist said. “So he seems to be getting stronger and more active in his opposition.”

LA Dodgers (Eovaldi) at San Francisco (Zito)
Recommendation: Los Angeles -110 1st 5 innings

The winning streak continues as we’re swinging a hot stick during our 10-1 MLB baseball run the past 10 days. Included is a perfect 7-0 top-play Big Drive run and we’re primed to add to our June and season-long profits with a top Big Drive total tonight between familiar foes. Projected strong pitching and preferred match-ups get the call as we fire for more profit and green.

Speaking of familiar foes, we chipped-in a solid plus price winner with analysis when the NY Mets beat the Yankees Friday night and our 5-inning recommendation hit a home run with Niese over Pettitte. Tonight a pair of NL West rivals do battle in Read more

Top pros duke it out at Poker Players Championship

06.25.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Las Vegas Sun on the $50K buy-in Poker Players Championship at Las Vegas’ Rio Casino. Attendance for the event is reportedly down due in part to ESPN not televising the final table.

“Because the best players play, this is definitely the tournament of champions,” local pro Brian Rast said. “'Poker Players Championship' is the right name for it.”

“Because I was defending my title and have a chance to go back-to-back, there was no way I wasn’t going to play,” Rast said. “But I don’t know if I’ll play in future years. If it goes back to being televised, I’ll play.”

“It makes a big difference because there’s added value to pros. You can get sponsorship deals and going to no-limit hold’em is extra value to me. That’s my best game.”

MLB Handicapping: Chicago's Samardzija showing signs of wearing down

06.25.2012     07:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We'll be keeping a close eye of Chicago's Jeff Samardzija over the next few weeks. His last four outings have lasted only 5, 3.2, 5.1 and 5 innings respectively. During that span, his ERA was 8.53 – though perhaps a tad unlucky with a .410 BABIP. Chicago claims everything is fine but with little to play for, the Cubs can ill-afford to damage one of their few prized possessions. Samardzija is slated to start Wednesday vs. New York.

‘‘One thing that we’ve done with Jeff more so than anybody — and maybe it’s something we also have to look at — is he’s not been able to stay on that five-day rotation because we’re trying to watch pitches,’’ Bosio said. ‘‘And maybe that is a disservice to him. There’s a lot to be said for staying on a regular routine. But when you’re talking about a special talent like Jeff, it’s hard to have it both ways. Do I see a pattern? No. I see a guy, along with the rest of the guys on the Read more
