NFL Gambling Preview: Green Bay Packers at Baltimore Ravens

Green Bay at Baltimore
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Green Bay -3.5 O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Green Bay -3 O/U 48.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Baltimore pk
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Under

We got two underrated defenses facing off against two offenses that are struggling in the red zone AND committed to running the football . Put those three factors together with the consistently high totals in the modern NFL era and the case for the Under is perfectly clear.

Let me start with the defenses. Green Bay got Morgan Burnett back in the lineup at safety last week after missing the first three games of the season and he definitely had an impact, saving a potential big play TD with a beautiful pass breakup. The Packers front seven really controlled the field against Detroit, and there’s no reason to think they won’t be able to do it again here even without Clay Matthews relentless pass rushing Read more

Breaking Down the Undefeated and Winless ATS Teams
The list of winless and undefeated ATS teams continues to shrink after Week 5 of the season. Denver and Seattle were the two remaining undefeated teams but both came up short from an ATS perspective. However, there are still four teams looking for their first pointspread win of the season as we head into Week 6. Those teams are Houston, Jacksonville, and the New York Giants at 0-5 ATS along with Pittsburgh at 0-4 ATS.

The Giants, Jaguars, and Steelers have all failed to win a game straight up while the Texans are 2-3. New York will attempt to snap their SU and ATS winless streak in Chicago playing on a short week against a Bears team that has dropped their last two games. It doesn’t help the Giants have three major flaws right now. They can’t take care of the football, they can’t block up front, and their secondary has been ripped apart by each opponent they’ve faced.
Jacksonville finds itself involved this week in the largest pointspread in NFL history as they opened as 28-point underdogs against the Denver Broncos. The next largest spread was when the Pittsburgh Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NFC News and Notes from Week 5

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: NFC thoughts and opinions from Week 5.

Chicago Bears - Chicago entered the game with only six sacks on the season, a notable weakness on a defense that's heavily reliant on creating turnovers. They got a little bit of pressure on Drew Brees here, but not enough. The Bears played a lot of Cover-2 today and it gave the Saints fits for a while, forcing Brees into dink-and-dunk’ mode. But Sean Payton made play calling adjustments, and Chicago’s defense didn’t adjust back, leaving Jimmy Graham in store for a huge afternoon.

Marc Trestman was a pointspread monster during his tenure with the Montreal Alouettes in one role in particular: coming off a loss. In his first NFL try in that same role, that success did not translate.

For the second straight week, this rebuilt offensive line got eaten up for extended stretches. Jay Cutler was under constant pressure and Matt Forte had no room to run. Even Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Denver Broncos at Dallas Cowboys

Denver at Dallas
Sunday, 1:30 pm PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Denver -5.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Denver -7 O/U 55.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Denver -4
Erin Rynning's Recommendation: Over

It’s getting difficult to find the words to describe what Peyton Manning has done in the first four weeks of the NFL season. The numbers certainly say enough as the Broncos have surged to a 4-0 record while averaging almost 45 points per game. Manning is throwing for an insane 9.4 yards per pass attempt with a 16/0 TD/INT ratio. It’s not easy to put up those digits on a video game.  The bad news for the Cowboys is that it will likely continue.  Manning has talked recently how the offense has yet to put together four truly great quarters of football.  Manning’s quick release is important to neutralize a firm Cowboys pass rush.  However, the Dallas secondary will be undermanned when it comes to Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Arizona State vs. Notre Dame
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - NBC (Arlington, Texas)
CRIS Opener:
Arizona State -6.5 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Arizona State -6.5 O/U 62.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Notre Dame -2
Brian Edwards' Recommendation: Arizona State

Notre Dame and Arizona State will collide Saturday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Most betting shops have tabbed the Sun Devils as 6-point favorites with a total of 62 for over/under wagers.

Gamblers can back the Fighting Irish on the money line for a +200 return (risk $100 to win $200). For first-half wagers, ASU is favored by three with a total of 31.

Arizona State (3-1 straight up, 2-2 against the spread) bounced back from a 42-28 loss at Stanford to blast USC by a 62-41 count as a 3.5-point home chalk. The 103 combined points soared over the 48.5-point total. Taylor Kelly threw for 351 yards and three TDs against the Read more

Kansas State at Oklahoma State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN Game Plan
CRIS Opener:
Oklahoma State -14 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Oklahoma State -14 O/U 59
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Oklahoma State -11.5
Brent Crow's Recommendation: Kansas State

Oklahoma State comes in off of a disappointing loss last week at West Virginia. The Cowboys dropped a 30-21 decision to a team that had struggled mightily and suddenly OSU does not appear to be the Big XII favorites any more. When you examine their results prior to the West Virginia loss, there was really nothing that showed why Oklahoma State was ranked 11th in the country. They were very sloppy in a 21-3 win over Mississippi State in Week 1 then beat up on cupcakes UTSA and Lamar in their next two games.

This year’s Oklahoma State team is definitely not as potent offensively as it has been in years past, which is understandable Read more

College Football Betting: SEC News and Notes - Week 5

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As expected, the best game of the week last week was the shootout between LSU and Georgia, with the Bulldogs coming out on top, 44-41. Aaron Murray picked apart the young LSU defense and Georgia’s defense was able to come up with the stop they needed on LSU’s final drive to preserve the win.

The other marquee game in the conference was lopsided as the Crimson Tide shut out Ole Miss 25-0. Bama’s defense looked much better than expected against the previously potent Ole Miss defense, shutting down Bo Wallace and the Rebels. It was the first time a Hugh Freeze coached team had ever been shutout.

I thought I would change things up in this week's column and look over the current national college football stats. In doing so, we find some interesting things going on in SEC land. Consider these numbers:

Arkansas is the highest ranked SEC rushing offense at 237 ypg, which is just 21st best in the nation.

Alabama is just 70th in the nation in rushing at 162.5 ypg, ahead of only Vanderbilt in the conference.

Texas A&M and Georgia are the only SEC teams ranked in the top 29 in the nation in passing offense, with the Aggies Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: New England Patriots at Cincinnati Bengals

New England at Cincinnati
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Cincinnati pk O/U 45
CRIS Current: Cincinnati pk O/U 45
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Cincinnati -2.5
Marty Otto's Recommendation: Under

The Cincinnati Bengals suffered their second defeat of the season after dropping an absolute dogfight (no pun intended) to the Browns last week. They return home to the friendly confines of Paul Brown Stadium to take on the Patriots, hoping to hand New England its first loss of the year.

Cincinnati was held to just six points last week on the road and they committed two turnovers. Sloppy offense has been a major factor for this team the past two seasons despite a trip to the playoffs. Right now they are averaging a little more than two turnovers per game and seeing Andy Dalton miss what should be easy throws must be frustrating to the Bengals’ coaching staff.

Coming into this contest the boys in Read more
