World Cup Gambling: First round matchups feature plethora of goals

06.17.2014     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Favorites and the OVER have been the theme of the World Cup thus far. That's not to say there haven't been upsets with the Netherlands crushing defending champ Spain, Costa Rica knocking off Uruguay, and the USA of course taking down Ghana as small underdogs. Scoring has been way up (3.14 gpg) with only two games featuring less than three goals.

“The World Cup is more popular than ever with bettors,” said Jimmy Vaccaro, a legend in our business. “The perfect example was a parlay that was written Sunday, where the guy said ‘Jimmy, give me a $200 three-team parlay. I’ll take the Spurs, and Jimmy, let’s go with the Braves, and give me Bosnia too.’

“It was just a unique sign of how things have transformed over the years with betting on the World Cup being bigger than ever.”

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Checking in on the World Cup betting markets following the USA's victory over Ghana yesterday. Up next is a Sunday matchup against Portugal. Pinnacle's original line for the game (June 8) had Portugal -129, USA +426, the draw +275, and the total 2.25ov-112. But following the US's win and Portugal's ugly 4-0 loss to Germany, the Portuguese have taken a fair amount of money.

Current three-way line as of 6/17
Portugal -172
USA +604
Draw +308
Total 2.5ov-109

MLB Handicapper Free Play: San Diego Padres at New York Mets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego (Kennedy) -120 at NY Mets (Matsuzaka) O/U 7
Recommendation: San Diego

The Padres and pitching coach Darren Balsley have done great work with this afternoon’s expected started Ian Kennedy. Kennedy struggled with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season before he was traded at the July 31st deadline to the Padres. The struggles continued for the right-hander after he was traded as he posted an overall 4.91 ERA in 2013. However, Kennedy still possessed good stuff and wasn’t too far removed from the 21-4 record and 2.88 ERA of 2011. Prior to this season Kennedy and Balsley were able to make key adjustments and we’ve seen an uptick in velocity and more of a reliance on the curveball. Kennedy’s strikeouts are up, walks are down, and he’s clearly outpitched (3.02 xFIP) his current 3.63 ERA and 5-7 W-L record. Meanwhile, the 33-year-old Daisuke Matsuzaka will be making his fourth start of the season for the Mets. His 2.95 ERA is sparkling, Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Yankees at Kansas City Royals

NY Yankees (Nuno) at Kansas City (Vargas) -130 O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Kansas City

The Yankees have sunk back down to .500 with seven losses in their last ten games.  The biggest culprit in their recent slump has been an anemic lineup, particularly their struggling ‘middle of the order’ bats.  The Bronx Bombers haven’t been bombing, held to four runs or less in each of those last ten contests.  For the season, the Yanks now rank #13 out of 15 AL teams in runs scored, a bottom tier lineup despite their enormous payroll.

Carlos Beltran has only one hit in 14 at bats since coming off the DL. Mark Teixeira was scratched yesterday with a sore wrist, hitting only .176 in his last 16 games.  Brian McCann is hitting just .225 for the season, well below his career norms.  And Derek Jeter is in the midst of a 3-23 slump over his last six games.   Jeter’s quote speaks volumes: “When guys are scuffling it seems like Read more

MLB Gambling Alert: LA's Puig and Gordon questionable vs. Cincinnati

06.09.2014     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Dodgers (Haren) at Cincinnati (Cingrani) O/U 8

As of this morning, Los Angeles' Dee Gordon (hip) and Yasel Puig (hip) were questionable for tonight's game at Cincinnati. Both players sat out Sunday. Puig currently has the fourth-highest slugging percentage in the league (.589) while Gordon has an MLB-best 36 stolen bases. The total for tonight’s game opened 8ov-120 but has since been bet down to 8un-120.

"I couldn't answer that right now," Mattingly said Saturday after the game. "The fact that there's no further tests scheduled at this point leads me to believe, at least hopefully, that these are day-to-day issues and not long-term issues."

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Houston Astros at Minnesota Twins

Houston (McHugh) at Minnesota (Deduno)
Recommendation: Houston 5-inning

The up-start Astros continue to fly under the radar winning 10 of their last 14 games. Of course, the Astros have been easily the worst team in the Major League Baseball over the last few years as finding value with this team hasn’t been a problem nor should it be moving forward. Sunday starter Collin McHugh fits the bill for flying under the radar as well. He’s toiled in the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies organizations with 10.04 and 7.59 ERAs in each of the last two years. Obviously there is only one direction to go for the 26-year-old. The Astros have done a great job of developing his stuff coupled with up-tick in velocity. His numbers show the improvement of his repertoire as he boasts a sweet 2.52 ERA and a 54-14 K-to-BB ratio. Meanwhile, Minnesota’s Samuel Deduno will toe the rubber for the Twins. Deduno has limited upside like many of the Twins starting pitchers. The right-hander Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Preseason NFC Betting News and Notes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I wrote that “the NFL offseason, at least for sports bettors, is essentially over.  Numbers are up, and they’re moving!”

“My first step in assessing the upcoming NFL season begins with a thorough look back at last year.  Every team’s power rating is set, in large part, based on where they finished the previous campaign.  Obviously, adjustments are made for injuries, luck, offseason improvements or declines, coaching changes and the like, but those base power rating numbers factor in what happened in 2013 very heavily.”

Last week, I focused on the 16 teams from the AFC.  In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, I’ll pass along a tidbit or two from each of the 16 NFC teams in regards to last year.  My focus is on things that are NOT likely to repeat the same way in 2014.  And this week, I’ll do my absolute best to avoid egregious errors like my ‘San Diego didn’t make the 2013 playoffs’ Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Los Angeles Angels at Oakland A's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Weaver) at Oakland (Gray) -135 O/U 7
Recommendation: Oakland

Afternoon start in Oakland as the A's go for the three-game sweep of the Angels. The first two games of the series were all Oakland with 9-5 and 11-3 victories. We'll throw our support the A's way as young gun Sonny Gray takes on veteran Jered Weaver. In looking through Weaver's game log this is arguably his toughest test of the season – on the road vs. left-handed heavy Oakland. Let's also not forget the day time environment at Oakland Coliseum which tends to help the ball carry more. Weaver of course a fly baller suited more for night games in Anaheim. Overall Weaver has been very solid this season with a 2.99 ERA. But he's also been a tad fortunate with a .225 BABIP. On the flip side, Oakland's Sonny Gray is a less than ideal matchup for the Angels. Gray is first and foremost a groundballer (56.95%) and second, filthy against right-handers (.205 BA/.304 SLG) – a key with the big bats of Mike Trout (? Read more

Group of bros cash in on UConn's National Championship

05.29.2014     08:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cool story on 12 UConn fans who won $60K on a futures bet at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Casino. The best part was they actually shopped around. Las Vegas sportsbooks have notoriously poor futures odds and after seeing 25-1 at Caesars they found 50-1 at the Hard Rock.

“The plan was if we won, we’d come back to Vegas to pick up the money and have a ridiculous Memorial Day weekend,” said Harrison Fuchs, the de facto leader of the big winners. “We all thought it was a long shot, but here we are.”
