College Football Gambling: Southern Miss starts fresh with Monken

08.01.2013     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even with a tough non-conference schedule, it's hard to go 0-12 when you play in C-USA – and even harder when your program hadn't had a losing season since 1993. But the question now is can Southern Miss bounce back? Ellis Johnson clearly wasn't the right hire so the Eagles brought in Todd Monken who last served as Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator. Early reports indicate that he hasn't found a quarterback and the offense (4 returning starters) needs work. No favors in September with road trips to Nebraska, Arkansas, and Boise State.

"We're bring in a lot of experience with nine (starters) that are coming back (on defense), including me and (defensive tackle Khyri Thornton)," Howze said. "Everybody has to take responsibility. We've got to help out the offense out a little bit. We have to get them the ball as much as we can this season."

Sunday MLB Betting Free Play: St. Louis Cardinals at Atlanta Braves

St. Louis (Miller) at Atlanta (Medlen)
Recommendation: St. Louis -120 5-inning

Here we go again with another opportunity to fade Atlanta's Kris Medlen. Two weeks ago we took the plus price with Cincinnati and Bronson Arroyo as Medlen lasted only four innings and allowed nine hits and four runs. Since then he posted another sub-par start against the Mets: 5.1 IP, 7 hits, 4 ERs. I think Medlen's fall from grace is nothing more than the league seeing him a few times. He's a soft-tossing right hander whose change-up is 83 mph and fastball 89-90 mph. The St. Louis Cardinals have a gem in Shelby Miller who through 19 starts has done nothing but impress. Note that Miller is throwing harder than he was earlier this season. His fastball averaged 95-96 over his last three starts. The only downside to Miller is that it looks like the Cardinals are trying to preserve him for the postseason. Miller has topped 100 pitches only once over his last eight starts so expect a 6-inning ceiling on him Read more

Rob Veno was a guest on today's Sportsmemo Podcast talking about the ACC Coastal Division. You can listen to the segment here. Rob was kind enough to pass along his notes from the show. Enjoy.

Canadian Football League Week 4 Betting Recap

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here is my recap of Week 4 in the Canadian Football League as I provide a quick hitter, team-by-team analysis...

Montreal Alouettes (1-3 SU/ATS)
Montreal’s offense finally showed up but the problem was it was only for a quarter! Having put up just 18 points on offense in their two prior games, the Alouettes scored 24 points in the first quarter to take a 24-0 lead against Calgary. They then proceeded to score three points the rest of the game, coughing up the lead and losing 38-27 as 7-point road underdogs – a performance that certainly made Montreal bettors nauseous. The defense, which had been solid in their first three games, was shredded both against the run and pass and special teams played a major role in the loss. Montreal’s Noel Devine looked to have a sure kickoff return touchdown only to have Calgary’s Fred Bennett track him down and punch the football out of his arms. Calgary recovered it in the end zone for a game changing touchback. A touchdown there would have given Montreal the lead back but instead Calgary used it to further their momentum and put the game away. The Alouettes are quickly becoming a comedy of Read more

MLB Gambling Free Play: Los Angeles Dodgers at Toronto Blue Jays

LA Dodgers (Nolasco) at Toronto (Rogers) -110 O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

The Dodgers banged out ten runs on 13 hits last night in Toronto, rallying from an 8-3 deficit to win the game in refuse to lose fashion – one excellent at-bat after the next.  On Monday, they pounded out 14 runs on 16 hits in another offensive outburst.

On Sunday, the Dodgers hung nine runs and 15 hits on the Nationals, chasing ace level hurler Jordan Zimmerman without recording a single out in the third inning.  Clearly, LA’s lineup is clicking on all cylinders right now, a dangerous, potent unit on a nightly basis

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays snapped out of their offensive funk last night with a nine run, 15 hit effort of their own.  That continues an under-the-radar trend of Overs in this series – six straight – with at least one of the two teams scoring 8+ in every single one of those contests.

Both bullpens are absolutely spent Read more

MLB Handicapping: Three Months of National League Boredom

I was watching the MLB Network for awhile this evening.  I think it was Al Leiter who pointed out that the Atlanta Braves hadn’t done much of anything since starting the season 12-1. We’ve been talking about the Braves' mediocre play for awhile on these pages. Then I started thinking, you know…NOBODY in that division has done anything since the Braves started 12-1!

NL East Since April 16 (when Braves were 12-1)

Atlanta 44-42

Philadelphia 43-42

Washington 40-45

NY Mets 36-46

Miami 33-50

If the Braves hadn’t rallied in the ninth inning tonight in New York they would have been 50/50 over three months, a half game worse than Philadelphia during that long span. Note that the quintet as a whole is 29 games under .500 over those three months. All games against each other split out…so they’ve really been outclassed against outsiders.

The NL Central has been pretty well Read more

MLB Handicapping: Breaking From the Gate...After the Break...

It can be tempting to overreact to stuff that happens when Major League Baseball resumes after the All-Star Break. Fans and analysts are playing extra close attention since they spent a few days thinking about the pennant races and how various teams may care…or not care about the rest of the season. But, the tone is often set for what follows by that first weekend. We won’t overreact today…but we’ll take a quick look at how all 30 offenses performed this past weekend using our “four-max” approach.

If you’re new to the blog, that’s a methodology that:

*Only counts scoring in the first five innings

*Stops counting once a team has reached FOUR runs

We do that to reward consistent scoring rather than the occasional explosion that can come if the opposing starting pitcher just doesn’t have anything that day…nor the lousy long relievers that replaced him. This started as an effort to gain context for Read more
