NFL Gambling Preview: Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Houston at Indianapolis
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Indianapolis -6.5 O/U 45.5
CRIS Current: Indianapolis -5 O/U 45.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Indianapolis -8
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Indianapolis

The wiseguys here in Vegas absolutely despise the Colts; rare vitriol from professional bettors.  Why the abject hatred for Indy?  Simple – Indy’s stats are lousy, just like they were last year; yet the Colts are on a 16-8 ATS run in their last 24 ballgames.  In other words, the sharp $$ has been fading Indy for two years and consistently losing those bets; a mounting source of frustration.

Those same wiseguys have cashed betting against the Colts three times in their last five games; blowout losses against the Rams, Cardinals and Bengals.  And we’re seeing heavy money pour in on Houston, against Indy again this week; giving us a very favorable line to support Read more

NFL Gambling: Oakland's defense is running on fumes

Kansas City -4.5 at Oakland O/U 41.5

The Oakland Raiders admit that their defense has been worn down the back half of the season. Prior to its Week 7 bye, Oakland went under the total in five of six games and allowed a respectable 22 ppg. Since the bye, they've been churning out overs at a high clip (5-1-1 O/U) in part because the defense allowed 29.2 ppg.

"We've changed things up a little bit,'' Allen said following practice Thursday. "Hopefully that gives them a little bit of a boost.''

"I think it's the natural attrition of the season,'' Allen said. "Our guys have been in a lot of close games, a lot of battles. It's not just a physical thing, it's a mental thing. When you grind that hard to dig yourself out of a hole it takes its toll. We've done some things to freshen them up and hopefully they'll be ready to fly

College Basketball Handicapping: Injury Report 12-13-2013

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The status of North Carolina’s P.J. Hairston and Leslie McDonald remains uncertain. Both remain suspended indefinitely and the only certainty is that neither will play Saturday vs. Kentucky.

Oregon’s Ben Carter and Dominic Artis are expected to make their season debuts Tuesday vs. UC Irvine. Both have been suspended so far while the Ducks have run out to an 8-0 straight-up record and a 7-0 against-the-spread mark. The ‘over’ is also 6-0 for Oregon. Both will miss their ninth and final game Saturday vs. Illinois.

Florida stormed out to a double-digit lead by forcing 16 first-half turnovers in Tuesday’s home win over Kansas. The Gators hooked up their backers in the 67-61 win as three-point favorites in a game that wasn’t near as close as the final score indicated. A late barrage of 3-pointers by KU’s Andrew Wiggins and abysmal free-throw shooting by UF made the final seem close. UF was playing for the first time all season with its full compliment of players. Scottie Wilbekin and Kasey Hill both returned from sprained ankles a little sooner than anticipated. Wilbekin was the best player on the court against the Jayhawks, Read more

NFL Handicapping: Drive Point Averages Week 15

12.12.2013     11:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

What you see below are per-game averages on offense and defense for points scored and allowed on drives of 60 yards or more. That's a stat I've been keeping myself by hand from itemized scoring drives in boxscores ever since the USA Today started publishing them many years ago. In the first parenthesis are strength of schedule rankings from Jeff Sagarin at USA Today and Football Outsiders (in that order, and, largely converging now). In the second parenthesis is turnover differential. Games are presented in market rotation order. I tried to line up the numbers as best as possible by abbreviating some of the team cities…

Thursday

San Diego: 14.6 on offense, 16.1 on defense (19-31) (-3 turnovers)

Denver : 23.3 on offense, 15.0 on defense (20-29) (-2 turnovers)

Football Outsiders has mentioned somewhere that San Diego supposedly has one of the five worst defenses in the history of their stat methodology. I mean…it’s pretty Read more

NFL Gambling: Rodgers practices, still not cleared to play vs. Cowboys

12.12.2013     11:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Green Bay at Dallas

Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers reportedly took snaps with the first team during Wednesday's practice but head coach Mike McCarthy said that in no way meant Rodgers was medically cleared to play Sunday's game at Dallas.

"Aaron still is not medically cleared, and I think it's important to stay in tune with that because the topic of 'Is he playing in the game?' vs. 'Is he medically cleared?' those are two totally different issues," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "So, Aaron's obviously very important to our organization. He's the face of our franchise.

"Until he's medically cleared, just like any other player going through a significant injury, that's really where the focus will be."

NBA Handicapping: Portland seeks revenge vs. Houston

Houston at Portland -3 O/U 212

Portland has had an eye on tonight's nationally televised (TNT) matchup vs. Houston. The Rockets won in the Rose Garden earlier this season, 116-106, on the strength of 54% shooting and 62 points from James Harden and Dwight Howard. The win was even more impressive considering Houston was playing the second of back-to-backs and third road game in four nights. For tonight’s game, both teams come in well rested with the Rockets last playing on Sunday and Trail Blazers on Monday.

“I think everybody is motivated just because we lost to them before,” Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge said.

“You’d like to say no, but the fact that it’s a national TV game, there’s only two — it’s the only game in town that night, the whole country is watching —

Anti-online gambling group throws poop up against the wall

12.11.2013     02:11 PM     Printer Friendly
Sheldon Adelson sent one of his minions to Washington, D.C. to bitch about online gambling. Flipping through a rolodex of excuses, Las Vegas Sands VP of Government Affairs stumbled upon what he referred to as "...our Joe Camel moment." Later, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas called him on the ridiculous statement.

“This is our Joe Camel moment. … It could very well be the demise of our industry,” Las Vegas Sands Vice President of Government Affairs Andrew Abboud told the panel, calling on lawmakers to reinstate an understanding of the Wire Act that would bar financial transactions for gaming online. “We just think turning every device into a casino takes gambling too far.”

“In the Venetian at the sports book, you can wager from anywhere in Nevada,” Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, said, pointing out a Sands advertising campaign for mobile betting. “What you’re advertising here is the same thing that we’re talking about … except for the

College Football Handicapping: USC focuses on Las Vegas Bowl

12.11.2013     01:54 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some quotes following one of USC's recent practices. The focus was on getting over the departure of Ed Orgeron and trying to avoid another Sun Bowl disaster. The Trojans play Fresno State in the Las Vegas Bowl and week from Saturday.

"We can't underestimate no team," said defensive captain Hayes Pullard.  "We have to go in there and prepare like we are second place and play like we are first place."

"We have a goal," said interim head coach Clay Helton. "Any time you have faced the adversity that they have faced and you are going to get the opportunity to get your 10th win, that's pretty special.  That's what their ultimate goal is."

"I feel like the emotions have died," said DL George Uko.  "He was like a dad to us as a d-line and became a dad to the rest of them over the eight weeks, so it was a sad loss."

Rose Bowl / Rose Bowl / Pasadena, CA
255 Michigan State
256 Stanford -2 (Power Rating)

Game Opened: Stanford -3 Total Not posted
Current Line: Stanford -4 or -4.5 Total Not yet posted

Early Thoughts
1. Obviously a battle of mirror images as similar style offenses and arguably the nation’s toughest defenses meet. Both teams are extremely happy to be in this game which should equate to 60 minutes of full effort from each side.

2. Can’t help but feel the edge in this game goes to Stanford because they’ve produced equally stellar defensive results against far superior offensive competition. Indiana, Nebraska and Ohio State are the best offenses MSU faced this season and they allowed 28, 28, and 24 points to those teams for an average of 26.7 per game. The Spartans overall defensive numbers are somewhat skewed by the seven lousy offenses they played.

3. The passing game and offensive line will be vital to each team’s success and probably determine the Read more
