NFL Handicapping: Kelly wants Eagles to play faster

09.11.2013     06:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, the offense was slow during Monday night's win over Washington. In the first half, Philadelphia ran a staggering 53 plays (a snap every 22.5 seconds) before slowing down with a lead after the break. The betting markets are buying into Kelly's wishes: The total for Sunday's game vs. San Diego went from 51.5 to as high as 55. Two telling quotes from Kelly and his quarterback Michael Vick. Kelly says the offense needs to go faster whereas Vick flat out said it was going to be a "long season" – not sure if he means the ups and downs of adjusting to Kelly's style or that he's mentally prepared to be on injured reserve by Week 4.

"I've never been a part of anything like this," Michael Vick said, via TheMMQB.com. "When the first quarter was over, I thought we were about to go into halftime. Unreal. The only thing I could tell myself was, 'It's going to be a long season.'"

"I felt like it was slow, to be honest with you," Read more

Cause for concern for the defending champs
Most people knew there would be an adjustment period for the Baltimore Ravens after many changes during the offseason but the holes were very much evident following their humbling 49-27 season opening loss in Denver. The Ravens offense had a solid first half but simply died from the moment that both starting right tackle Michael Oher and receiver Jacoby Jones left the game with injuries. Oher’s injury isn’t serious but Jones will be sidelined for approximately 4-6 weeks with a sprained MCL. From that point of the game, the Ravens offense stalled repeatedly. Denver keyed in on the ground game and shut down running backs Ray Rice and Bernard Pierce. Meanwhile, players like Dallas Clark and Ed Dickson proved they were not ready to step up and fill the production void left by the injuries to Jones and Dennis Pitta as well as the departed Anquan Boldin. That allowed Denver to focus their attention defensively on Torrey Smith and nobody else was able to step up for the Ravens in the receiving corps. Clark and Dickson both dropped multiple passes thrown to them by Joe Flacco. Baltimore’s secondary also Read more

College Football Handicapping: Oregon State offensive line in shambles

Oregon State at Utah -3.5 O/U 58

Major offensive line issues for the Oregon State Beavers as they prepare for their PAC-12 opener at Utah. Assistant coach Mike Cavanaugh used phrases "paper thin" and "absolutely unprecedented" to describe his unit's current status. In two games against Eastern Washington and Hawaii the Beavers amassed only 162 yards on the ground (2.84 ypc). Keep in mind OSU's o-line was originally slated to return four starters. We've seen a steady amount of Utah betting support since Sunday's openers.

NFL Gambling Preview: Washington Redskins at Green Bay Packers

Washington at Green Bay
Sunday, 10 am PT – FOX
CRIS Opener:
Green Bay -6.5 O/U 48
CRIS Current: Green Bay -7.5 O/U 48.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Green Bay -6.5
Marty Otto’s Recommendation: Use Green Bay -1.5 in a 2-team, 6-point teaser

The Redskins are in a brutal spot here as they travel to Green Bay on short rest having just played on Monday night. To exacerbate the poor spot even more is the fact they played against the new Chip Kelly up-tempo spread offense. The Eagles ran a remarkable 53 plays in the first half alone and you have to imagine Washington’s thin defense is still going to be feeling the effects come Sunday. We have to remember most of this roster is not “game fit” just yet so four long quarters of uphill fighting can really gas a defense. It should be noted that Green Bay was a top ten offense in terms of tempo last season so we shouldn’t expect many Read more

NFL Handicapping: Betting markets showing support for Oakland Raiders

09.09.2013     12:06 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Jacksonville at Oakland -5.5 O/U 39.5

The betting markets spent much of the summer and preseason coming up with reasons to bet against the Oakland Raiders. Back on May 28, CRIS opened their Week 1 game at Indianapolis with the Colts 6.5-point favorites. Three months later, the Colts closed as 11-point chalk. But Oakland looked a lot better than expected as Terrell Pryor made plays in the passing game and with his feet and the defense held Indy to a rather modest 274 yards. The Colts won the game 21-17, but Oakland had the ball inside the red zone with less than a minute to play.

That was obviously just one game but the betting markets have seemingly gone from complete distaste of the Raiders to feverous support. CRIS opened Oakland -3.5 for Sunday's game against Jacksonville and it shot up as high as -6 before settling in at its current number of -5.5. No question the Jaguars, who lost to Kansas City 28-2, play a role in the market's pro-Oakland stance. But had the Raiders not Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NFC News and Notes from Week 1

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: NFC Tidbits from Week 1.

Chicago Bears – Sure, the Bears didn't make the playoffs last year, but they won ten games and were one of the league's better teams. This defense can still make plenty of big plays, as evidenced by Charles Tillman's huge game and their complete domination against the run here. Jay Cutler did a great job finding open receivers on third and long. He connected on a pair of third and longs into very tight windows on Chicago's first touchdown drive. The revamped offensive line didn't do much for run blocking, but they gave Cutler all the time he needed all afternoon.

Cutler can still scramble out of pressure and his mobility created several opportunities that wouldn't have been there otherwise. But Cutler's propensity for making mistakes at crucial times was on display here, a horrible pass on first down as the Bears were driving in the fourth quarter. However, he made the most of his next Read more

CRIS now posting College Football lines Sunday morning

09.09.2013     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When bettors woke up Sunday morning they were probably surprised to see that CRIS had already posted its opening numbers for Week 3 college football. There appears to be a lot of changes going on at CRIS – earlier openers, higher limits, and more opinionated lines. With Pinnacle no longer having as large an impact on the market (the college basketball markets were extremely weak once Pinny shutdown a majority of its credit accounts) CRIS has pretty much taken over as the “leading market indicator.” We’ll be discussing CRIS’s opening numbers and initial lines moves for Week 3 college football on today’s Sportsmemo Podcast with Rob Veno.

NFL Week 1 Betting and Statistical Recap

This report will run the linescores for every NFL game in the format we outlined Saturday night in the colleges. I’ll also include the other stuff we look at that are more specific to the blog. If I get a chance Monday or Tuesday…I’ll try to flesh out some of these. But…I think the numbers in this format do a pretty good job of telling the story.

Games are presented in market rotation order…

(If you’re new to the site, “Drive Points” are those scored on drives of 60 yards or more. “Stat Score” is an estimate of what the final score should have been based only on rushing and passing yardage. The formula for that is 2 times rushing yardage…plus passing yardage…times 0.67…divided by 15. Sloppiness is a quickfire stat to measure execution…the formula is 5 times giveaways plus the number of incomplete passes…lower is better because you want to avoid sloppiness)

College Football Betting News and Notes - Week 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Another week void of any significant upsets. Washington State beat USC as over a two-touchdown underdog while Navy dispatched of Indiana as a double-digit underdog. Needless to say, most rec bettors who like to four- and five-team moneyline parlay big favorites have yet to hit many road blocks.

With most offshore books now offering lines on FBS vs. FCS games bettors will have another crack at betting against Ron Turner and his Florida International squad. Yes, the Panthers played two teams in Maryland and UCF that they probably would have lost to any other season, but it was the way that FIU lost (43-10, 38-0) that has them vying with Idaho and New Mexico State for the label of Worst Team in the Country. Don't sleep on this week's opponent Bethune-Cookman who last season rushed for 233 yards on Miami and hung tough for the first half. The year before that B-C outgained the Canes 422-335.

After a dismal showing in its opener at Virginia, BYU wasn't on the radar of many bettors. Meanwhile, a lot of folks were drinking the Texas kool-aid after they dismantled woeful New Mexico State. And for a sophisticated as the betting markets are portrayed at times, there is no Read more
