MLB Betting Notes: Washington's plan for Strasburg's innings

07.20.2012     06:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Hanson) at Washington (Strasburg) -140 O/U 7

It would have been a lot less confusing if Washington came out and said "no comment" in regards to Stephen Strasburg's innings? For starters, GM Mike Rizzo is reportedly the last and only word in deciding if and when Strasburg gets shut down. Rizzo claims it will be nothing more than the eye test. Strasburg meanwhile says they'll have to gang tackle him (actually that was our words) in order to stop him from throwing. Either way, the Nats have done a pretty good job so far with Strasburg at a modest 105 innings (18 starts). He’s topped 100 pitches just seven times. They claim once they shut him down, he's done until 2013.

"There is no magic number," Rizzo said. "It will be the eye test. (Manager) Davey (Johnson) won't decide and ownership won't decide. It Read more

MLB Gambling Free Pick: Seattle Mariners at Kansas City Royals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Millwood) at Kansas City (Chen)
Recommendation: Seattle Team Total Over 4

The Seattle Mariners have scored 4 or more runs in 56% of their road games this season. Since June 1, no doubt assisted by the warm weather, they've played 17 road games and notched four or more runs 10 times with more than half of those games played in the pitcher friendly environments of Oakland, San Diego and Anaheim. After notching nine runs on back-to-back nights against the Royals, they have another shot at big production against Bruce Chen and a potentially weary bullpen. In Chen's 19 starts, the Royals allowed four or more runs 10 times including four of his last six outings. Chen is in his preferred role at home and the Mariners do struggle against lefties – though Chen doesn't have much of a split. Still, he's hardily in good form having allowed 18 earned runs over his last three starts. The Mariners have quietly scored the most runs in baseball (238) on the road. And while they've Read more

College Football Handicapping: Alabama's opponents with fewer bye weeks

07.18.2012     10:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Compared to the rest of the SEC, over the last two years Alabama got the shaft by playing a ridiculous amount of teams coming in off of a bye week. Nick Saban wasn't too pleased about it. This year, nearly all of the Crimson Tide's opponent won't enjoy such an advantage – not that it matters for a majority of them. Of Bama's 12 opponents, only two come in off byes and one of them is Western Carolina. The other though is arguably the biggest game of the season as LSU will be rested and ready when Alabama heads to Baton Rouge on November 3.

Alabama's Schedule (Opponent's Previous Game)
9/1 vs. Michigan (1st game)
9/8 vs. Western Kentucky (vs. Austin Peay)
9/15 at Arkansas (at UL-Monroe)
9/22 vs. Florida Atlantic (at Georgia)
9/29 vs. Ole Miss (at Tulane)
9/6 BYE WEEK
10/13 at Missouri (vs. Vanderbilt)
10/20 at Tennessee (at Mississippi State)
10/27 vs. Mississippi Read more

Blog accuses Sheldon Adelson of profits from prostitution

07.18.2012     09:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone knows casino mogul – and anti-online gambling advocate – Sheldon Adelson has floated the GOP a boatload of money. So it shouldn't come as a surprise to see the Democrats try to dig up some dirt on this guy. Someone in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee decided to fire out a blog about Adelson's money somehow coming from a Chinese prostitution operation. Adelson in turn is threating to sue for libel.

"Breaking: House Republicans' Biggest Donor Approved 'Prostitution Strategy' in China" was the headline of a June 29 statement from the DCCC and a July 2 statement asked what House Republicans will do when their "Chinese prostitution money comes from billionaire Sheldon Adelson."

The LVH Superbook is most assuredly a wiseguy friendly establishment, consistently ranked along with the Cantor books as the best sportsbooks in town. Jay Kornegay and his staff are industry leaders – the betting boards at LVH are loaded with a bevy of wagering opportunities that many books in town don’t offer; particularly around Super Bowl time.

Kornegay doesn’t ratchet up the juice either, offering ten cent lines during baseball season and twenty cent lines for his win totals on both NFL and college football. On their future book, the LVH is willing to adjust in both directions. For example, within the past week, the LVH adjusted their Odds to Win the Division for the 2012 NFL season on ten of the 32 teams.

Five of those teams are now more expensive to buy – less of a return on investment since last week. But five of those teams are now cheaper to buy, offering better value than they did a week ago. Many sportsbooks in town simply adjust odds down from their openers in response to the bets they’ve received, but the LVH is one book willing to adjust upwards in an effort to attract more handle.

The LVH took center stage Read more

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: WSOP edition

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even the sharpest bettors in the world don’t spend 100% of their time focusing on sports. This week in particular is arguably the lightest sports betting week of the entire year.

Baseball is on their annual All Star Break through Friday. There’s no Canadian Football or Arena Football scheduled until Thursday, and between the two leagues, the dozen games on tap for the week offer fewer potential betting opportunities than a single day with a full slate of MLB action. Wimbeldon is in the rear view mirror for tennis bettors, as is the Euro 2012 for soccer bettors and UFC 148 for MMA bettors. It’s the time of year where most professional bettors are either on vacation or engaging in another positive expectation activity. Here in Las Vegas, that activity usually involves the World Series of Poker.

In the four decades since its inception, the World Series of Poker has grown from a tiny tournament attracting only a small handful of bettors into the modern behemoth at the Rio; a true spectacle even for seasoned pros. The 2012 WSOP features a whopping 61 different bracelet events over a more than six week span. In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Read more

Federer win at Wimbledon cashes big futures tickets

This is a great story about a man whose futures bet cashed in large for a local charity in England. While he isn't around to see it perhaps he's smiling somewhere...

Forget the national pride of rooting for Andy Murray, Oxfam!

In 2003 Nick Newlife, from Oxfordshire, made a wager of £1,520, at odds of 66/1, that the Swiss tennis star would win seven Wimbledon titles by 2019.

Mr Newlife died in 2009 but had left the betting slip to Oxfam in his will...

Andrew Barton, from Oxfam, told BBC Radio 5 live that it had been a difficult match to watch because his loyalties were split.

"It's just so unfortunate that he nailed it against Andy Murray," he said.

"I was just sitting there watching the tennis and I kept finding myself calling for Murray, particularly in that long game in the third set.

"And then my head is telling me: Andrew, remember Oxfam gets the money if Federer wins."

And it wasn't just the one win Oxfam has been the beneficiary of either:

MLB Gambling Free Play: Los Angeles Dodgers at Arizona Diamonbacks

07.06.2012     06:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Dodgers (Kershaw) -115 at Arizona (Collmenter) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Los Angeles

Oddsmakers and the betting markets have spent the better part of the last month downgrading the Los Angeles Dodgers because of their much publicized offensive drought. The worst of it saw LA score 15 runs in 12 games en route to a 1-11 stretch. But since the calendar flipped to July, we've seen a tad more offense with 21 runs their last five games (4-1). Despite all that has happened, and with San Francisco currently struggling on the East Coast, the Dodgers head into today with a 1.5 game lead in the National League West. They've have a chance to extend that lead with ace Clayton Kershaw slated to take the hill. Kershaw's seasonal numbers are rock solid (2.65 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) and he not only has a strong history against Arizona (1.92 ERA in 11 starts) but a proven track record at Chase Field (2.59 ERA, 5 starts). To see him at the cheap of a price you'd think he was matched up against the 2011 version Read more

Scamdicapper service posts fake betting slips on website

07.02.2012     07:45 AM     Printer Friendly
OK, most of you are capable of spotting a scam and unfortunately there are a lot of them that take place in the handicapping industry. Take ATS Consultants for example. Beyond the Bets first reported that ATS Consultants was posting winning tickets on its website site as a way to authenticate the “endless barrage of winning” taking place. As you can already suspect, those winning tickets were fake – and it didn't take more than two sets of eyes to figure it out with considering the date – of the Super Bowl! – was wrong. MGM sportsbook manager Jay Rood contacted the Gaming Control Board regarding the falsified winnings.

“It’s not legitimate,” MGM sportsbook manager Jay Rood said in an email. “They didn’t even proof read them well. Look at the Giants ticket. Event date and the ticket written date, among a few other Read more
