College Football Handicapping: Switching conferences

06.26.2014     07:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good breakdown on ESPN.com of the history of college football teams switching to new BCS conferences – West Virginia (Big East to Big XII) and Texas A&M (Big XII to SEC) two recent examples. In most situations the step up in class resulted in poorer results the first year – Utah, TCU, and Missouri good examples. This year, Rutgers and Maryland join the Big Ten.

College Football Betting: It takes three days to put together Games of the Year

06.25.2014     02:16 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sort of generic but worth a read as Bleacher Report talks with the Golden Nugget oddsmaker Aaron Kessler about the creation of College Football Games of the Year.

“I make a list of all the games with computer-only lines in a spreadsheet,” Kessler said. “Then, I'll go through and adjust lines based on my opinion. These adjustments from the raw numbers can be huge.”

“We literally lock ourselves in a room and don't come out until all lines are done,” Kessler said. “The whole of creating the ‘Games of the Year’ takes about 72 hours from beginning to end.”

College Football Gambling: Rutgers puts offense in hands of Friedgen

06.24.2014     02:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Rutgers’ Kyle Flood enters the all-important third season as head coach as the team moves from the AAC to the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights went 9-4 in Flood's first season but dropped to 6-7 in the AAC a year ago. In hopes of bolstering the offense – and developing turnover prone quarterback Gary Nova – Flood hired former Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen to serve as offensive coordinator. Rutgers will be playing in the Big Ten's East Division which means games against Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State. They also drew Nebraska and Wisconsin for their two contests vs. the West.

"The thing that's most exciting to me about watching him offensively is to see the multiplicity of where he puts the pieces," Flood said.

"To be a really high quality pro-style offense it doesn't mean you line up with two backs in the backfield in the I the whole game. It should be a multiplicity of personnel groups. It should be a multiplicity of formations, shifts, motions.

"By the end of spring I began to see

College Football Betting: West Virginia names Trickett Week 1 starter

06.24.2014     01:21 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It is pretty apparent that if West Virginia's Dana Holgorsen doesn't win this season he'll be the offensive coordinator of some middle-of-the-road BCS conference team at this time next year. After popping for a 10-3 mark and a trip to the Orange Bowl in 2011, the Mountaineers are 11-14 SU and 6-12 in Big XII play. WVU's defense under Holgorsen has been awful – and a topic for another day – but so has the team's quarterback play since Geno Smith left in 2012. Last year, the trio of Clint Trickett, Paul Millard, and Ford Childress combined for a 16-16 TD-to-INT ratio and 115.52 QB rating. Tricket has shown some ability and wasn't 100% last season (shoulder). Holgoren named him the team's Week 1 starter vs. Alabama.

"He worked hard last season and showed a lot of ability and leadership and deserves the chance to lead the team as a senior," Holgorsen said. "He will be our starter."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: AFC Season Over/Under Win "morphers"

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Two weeks ago, I wrote about the seven NFC teams that are projected to improve or decline by two wins or more in 2014 based on the current market numbers for their season win totals.  I intended to write Part II of the article last week, talking about the four AFC teams that are also projected to improve or decline by two wins or more in 2014, but I got derailed by the College Football Game of the Year openers at the Golden Nugget; a “must report” event.  So, let’s just call it better late than never!

The markets are telling us to expect more of the same from 12 of the 16 AFC teams.  What makes these four squads different? My goal here is to focus on why these particular teams are expected to improve or decline significantly compared to last year.  I’ll do that by looking at how the broader market conditions affect the numbers.  What do the markets fixate upon?  What do they largely ignore?  Read on to find out.

College Football Gambling: Utah State's Chuckie Keeton back for senior season

06.19.2014     01:14 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Remember this guy? Yeah, he was pretty good before he missed eight games last year after tearing his ACL. Utah State quarterback Chuckie Keeton is expected to start the Aggies' Week 1 game at Tennessee.

"From a health standpoint, I expect a very, very high level of play. I expect him to start right where he left off, which was very, very efficient, very effective, very explosive, very stingy with the football — all of those things. So as long as he gets back to being the same Chuckie, then I expect that that's what we'll see.

"Time will tell; none of us know," Wells said. "Let's be real with it. Every knee is different, every rehab is different; we do feel like he's right on track. And from what I hear, he's doing well. But until that is proven out there on the field in a live game, then we won't know. But I've got full confidence in that kid. There's not a

Billy Walters: The sports bettor everyone loves to hate

06.17.2014     02:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on the constant barrage of accusations thrown Billy Walters' way – everything from insider trading to having SEC referees in his back pocket. Interesting that the article quietly mentions that 2013 marked the first time in 39 years Walters failed to turn a profit betting on sports.

Sean Patrick Griffin, author of "Gaming the Game'' - an acclaimed book about the 2007 betting scandal involving NBA referee Tim Donaghy - said a few Las Vegas gamblers are "adamant'' that one or two football referees in the Southeastern Conference help Walters with his college football picks. Brian Tuohy, author of "Larceny Games: Sports Gambling, Game Fixing and the FBI," said via email, "Walters, from my sources, actually has waaay too close of connections to several big time college coaches for all of his bets to be legit. He's getting inside information from these guys without a doubt.''

FSU -24 vs. Notre Dame
