College Football Handicapping: Rutgers on its sixth OC in as many seasons

08.17.2015     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With Ralph Friedgen stepping down, Rutgers will go with its sixth different offensive coordinator in as many seasons. Former wide receiver coach Ben McDaniels will run an offense that ranked seventh in the Big Ten in total offense last season (390 ypg). The Scarlet Knights must replace quarterback Gary Nove who quietly finished third in the Big Ten in QB Rating (145.3). McDaniels says the team will continue to utilize a "pro-style" attack with "multiple tempos."

"I think one of those pieces that is a part of that (pro-style offense) is playing in multiple tempos, so we absolutely intend on playing in multiple tempos," McDaniels said Sunday at Rutgers media day. "It benefits you. It challenges the defense to have to be ready for that. So not dissimilar to a lot of places, we'll have multiple tempos we'll try and play at."

College Football Gambling: Syracuse installs new offensive system

08.13.2015     08:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Syracuse had one of the worst passing attacks in the country last season (98.8 QB Rating, 127th nationally). As a result, the Orange have installed yet another new offense. Terrel Hunt, the team's slated starting quarterback, will be learning his third different offense in five years. Last season, Hunt threw for only one touchdown and 163.8 ypg in six contests.

"We have a long way to go," Lester said. "We're trying to get better every day, but when we talk to the players, they know what we're talking about. I don't have to explain the play before I talk about the nuances of it."

College Football Handicapping: Tulsa head coach Montgomery wants to play up-tempo

08.12.2015     08:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tulsa first-year head coach Philip Montgomery is looking to revamp and speed up an offense that ranked 94th in scoring offense (24.7 ppg) and 59th in total offense (412.5 ypg) in 2014. Montgomery served as Baylor’s offensive coordinator since 2006. The Bears led the nation in scoring and total offense last season.

"It's a fun offense as a quarterback to be a part of," Evans said.

"Besides the tempo, I think people will see a lot more deep balls thrown than a year ago. I think the offense will be as fun to watch as it is to play in."

College Football Gambling: Cincinnati looks to shore up defense

08.12.2015     08:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati's defense was pretty easy to handicap last season against weak offenses they posted great numbers but against teams that could move the football, they struggled. The Bearcats allowed 27.2 ppg despite holding SMU, South Florida, Tulane, UConn and Temple to a combined 40 points. On the other end of the spectrum, Ohio State, Miami-FL, and East Carolina rolled up 151 points. By midseason bettors should have a good sense as to whether or not things will change. Cinci's first three games including Alabama A&M, Temple (100th scoring offense in 2014), and Miami-OH (106th). Their next three games including Memphis (22nd), Miami-FL (62nd), and BYU (15th).

“Definitely, we take it personally,” said Steve Clinkscale, the new UC defensive coordinator. “All the returning players take it personally. Heck, the coaches, we take it personally. We’ve got to do

College Football Betting: Virginia seeks improved rushing attack

08.12.2015     08:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After averaging only 3.3 ypc and 116.3 ypg on the ground in ACC play last season, Virginia is putting extra emphasis on running the football in 2015 according to third-year offensive coordinator Steve Fairchild.

“The first year I was here, we got in the I [formation] and tried to play football the right way,” said Fairchild, noting that Kevin Parks rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2013.

“I’ll take the blame for last year. I think we undersold ourselves. We got a little finesse-y in the run game. We went back this spring, got underneath center and tried to pound some downhill runs.

“When you run the football, everything else feeds off that.”

College Football Handicapping: Clemson wants to play at faster clip

08.12.2015     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With former offensive coordinator Chad Morris taking over SMU, Clemson will go with co-OCs for the upcoming season. Both Tony Elliott (RB coach) and Jeff Scott (WR coach) worked under Morris. Early reports indicate that the offense wants to play at an even faster pace in 2015. During Morris' four seasons as offensive coordinator, the Tigers averaged 78 plays per game.

“They’ve got a lot of enthusiasm and tempo. As you can see, we’re going faster than we’ve ever gone. The coaches are doing a good job of mixing it up and giving them some obstacles throughout the course of practice to challenge our tempo and the guys have done a phenomenal job.”

“The offense is who we are. It is Clemson, it is Clemson’s offense not Chad Morris’ offense, it’s Clemson’s offense. It’s who we are and that’s not going to change.”
