College Football Betting Preview: Michigan State Spartans at Nebraska Cornhuskers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Michigan State at Nebraska
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Michigan State -4.5 O/U 58
CRIS Current: Michigan State -5 O/U 58
Recommendation: Michigan State

Quiet as a mouse and undefeated Michigan State heads to Lincoln off of a bye week. Following an 0-6 ATS start, the Spartans have covered two straight. After posting nearly a yard-and-a-half advantage over their opponents a year ago, Sparty is a very modest +0.31 this season which is certainly reflective in their pointspread failures.

Meanwhile, Nebraska's disastrous season continues after an embarrassing 55-45 loss to Purdue which dropped their record to 3-6 on the season and 1-4 in conference play. Junior backup quarterback Ryker Fife started over the injured Tommy Armstrong Jr. and went 29-of-48 for 407 yards and 4 TDs, but also had 4 interceptions. While five of their losses have come by a total of 13 points, the Huskers are a team that can't seem to get out of their own way. Case in point, Nebraska has actually outgained the opposition this season but penalties (104th nationally) and turnovers (-8 margin, 113th nationally) Read more

College Football Betting Preview: California Golden Bears at Oregon Ducks

California at Oregon
Saturday, 7:30 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Oregon -6 O/U 74
CRIS Current: Oregon -4.5 O/U 76
Recommendation: California

The betting markets were pretty quick to downgrade the Oregon Ducks following Week 4's blowout home loss to Utah. Since then, Oregon has won and covered three out of its last four. None of the performances were dominating as the Ducks took out a struggling Colorado squad, lost to Washington State (again at home), were outgained on a yards-per-play standpoint in a win over Washington, and last weekend won a coin flip triple OT contest against Arizona State. On the season, OU's modest +0.62 ypp advantage vs. last season's +1.82 tells you all you need to know about the decline of the Ducks.

The markets have also soured on Cal after three straight losses. The Golden Bears did outgain two of those three foes but a -6 turnover margin during that stretch had a huge impact on the outcomes. This weekend marks a step down in class defensively as UCLA, Utah, and USC all rank in the upper-half of the PAC-12 whereas Oregon ranks dead last at 6.04 ypp allowed. This Read more

NFL Handicapping: Tennessee Titans fire Ken Whisenhunt

11.03.2015     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College coaches, NFL coaches...no one is safe these days. The Tennessee Titans fired Ken Whisenhunt following the team's 1-6 start. Whisenhunt was 3-20 SU during his tenure. The Titans are a semi-respectable 3-4 ATS and have been outgained by 0.4 yards per play. Mike Mularkey will serve as interim head coach.

We saw Miami bounce back with a strong effort following the firing of Joe Philbin. Tennessee's situation though is a bit different as the Dolphins had a bye week to adjust whereas Tennessee has a game this week and uncertainty at the quarterback position with Marcus Mariota (knee) questionable.

For Sunday, the Titans travel to New Orleans. There is no line on the game due to Mariota's questionable status.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing bye-less College Football teams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seventeen college football teams enter November without having had a single bye week since the start of the season and without a bye this coming week.  Those teams are Arizona, Ball State, Boston College, Colorado, UConn, Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Miami-Ohio, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas Tech, Western Kentucky, Wisconsin and Wyoming.  Two more teams, North Texas and UMass, haven’t had byes since Week 1; teams that started their seasons a week late, but haven’t had a break since.  Is there anything unique or different about these non-bye squads?  Read on to find out.

Five of the 17 teams listed above don’t have any bye weeks at all.  Florida International, Miami-Ohio, Hawaii (with their 13 game schedule!), Arizona and Colorado will finish the season without a break.  Note that none of those five are going to play in a conference championship game, and only two (Arizona and FIU) have any realistic shot to make a bowl game.  Bye-less teams don’t tend to be very successful.  Most importantly for our purposes, they also don’t tend to cover many pointspreads Read more

College Football Betting: Teams cash tickets following coaching departures

11.02.2015     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Add Hawaii's Norm Chow to the list of college football coaches that have been either fired, resigned, or retired this season. With the exception of UCF, teams have responded fairly strong against the spread following their respective coaching changes. Let's take a look...

Minnesota - Jerry Kill was forced to step down due to health reasons and the Golden Gophers responded with a big effort in a near-upset win over Michigan. Minny easily cover +10.5 but a wild goalline finish gave the Wolverines the 29-26 victory.

Miami - No Al Golden and no Brad Kaaya didn't stop the Hurricanes from pulling off the "upset" at Duke. They in no way deserved to win the game, but easily cashed +10 for their backers.

UCF - The Golden Knights have shown no fight following George O'Leary's departure. Two weeks ago, at home, they were crushed by Houston 59-10 and then last week, a similar outcome in a 52-7 loss at Cincinnati.

South Carolina - The Gamecocks have notched back-to-back pointspread covers following Steve Spurrier's resignation.

USC - After a decent Read more

College Football Gambling Alert: Georgia to start third string QB vs. Florida

10.30.2015     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Despite still being in the SEC East title race, Georgia is expected to start its third-string quarterback against Florida on Saturday. Faton Bauta, who has yet to throw a pass this season, is reportedly getting the nod despite first stringer Grayson Lambert and backup Brice Ramsey being healthy. Bauta is apparently a solid "run threat" who earned the nickname "Tim Tebow Jr." Lambert has taken a lot of heat this season, particularly for his dismal performance (10-of-24, 86 yards) in a rain-soaked blowout loss to Alabama. However, on the season, his QB Rating is a respectable 149.3 and in Week 3 broke a slew of records by completing 24-of-25 passes against South Carolina. The Gators sit atop the SEC East standings at 4-1 with Georgia at 3-2 and the rest of the division with three or more conference losses. Prior to the announcement, Florida was a -2.5 favorite. Sportsbooks have since taken the game off the board.

College Football Handicapping: Nebraska goes with former walk-on quarterback vs. Purdue

10.30.2015     06:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nebraska Cornhusker quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. (turf toe) will miss Saturday's game at Purdue. That means former walk-on Ryker Fyfe will be under center. Fyfe, a junior, has attempted only 18 career passes. In six games against FBS competition, the Boilermakers have allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 69% of their passes which ranks 124th nationally. Nebraska opened -11 but is currently -7.5 across the board. The total was bet down from 56 to 54.

"He is not held back," Riley said. "He has run all these plays. He was the sole guy this week to take the first-string reps. So the knowledge of everything about what we're doing, he's familiar with.

"I'm excited for him, and I think he'll do very well."
