College Football Betting: Georgia and Nebraska face off for second straight year

Nebraska vs. Georgia -9 O/U 60.5

Sounds as if Georgia was a little disappointed to draw Nebraska for a second straight year after beating the Cornhuskers 45-31 in the Capital One Bowl. In that game, UGA closed as a 9.5-point favorite with a total of 62. Heading into the fourth quarter, the game was tied 31-31.

"I was kind of hoping we were going to play the U or I heard there was a chance we could play the alma mater,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said of Miami, where he was a backup quarterback. “This will be great because Nebraska is the team I grew up admiring. That was my team as a kid (in Omaha, Neb.) so it worked out good.”

“I was kind of like the other guys,” the Georgia senior offensive lineman said. “I did want to play Michigan or Iowa or Minnesota, just a Read more

College Football Handicapping: North Carolina in the right frame of mind for Belk Bowl

Cincinnati vs. North Carolina -3 O/U 56.5

North Carolina's season was far from smooth as the Tar Heels started 1-5 and barely slipped into the postseason at 6-6. But this is a program that has been through a lot – NCAA issues, postseason ban, coaching changes, etc. – and is viewing the nearby Belk Bowl as an opportunity to send their seniors off on a good note.

“Think about this senior class and what they’ve been through,” UNC coach Larry Fedora said at the close of practice Monday.

“They come in here and we start out with the investigation. They see it through. They have to be the one to bear the weight of the sanctions,” Fedora said. “And then they had three head coaches, they’ve had two staffs. I know (defensive end) Kareem Martin has had six position coaches. Read more

Speaking of bowl game prop bets, 5Dimes is offering some on Lee Corso's ESPN Game Day selections. And yes, there is a website that has somehow (we assume accurately) kept track of the Sunshine Scooter's record dating back to 1993 – as of a few weeks ago he was 66.59%...straight up, of course.

College Football Handicapping: Bowl Game Rushing Differentials

12.16.2013     09:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Below is a chart of every college football bowl matchup's rushing differential. It's a simple formula of yards per carry and yards per carry allowed. For example, Alabama averages 5.97 ypc and 3.37 ypca which equal a +2.60 differential. While the dynamics of college football have changed over the last few years, accurately identifying teams that will win the rushing battle in a particular matchup can still put bettors in a favorable position. The handicap obviously goes well beyond the raw numbers. Houston has over a yard "advantage" over Vanderbilt but you must account for conference affiliation and/or strength of schedule. Against UCF, Louisville, and Cincinnati, the Cougars were -1.15 – a far better indicator of what to expect against the Commodores. Like our strength of schedule chart, these numbers are well accounted for in the lines, but when you include them with other factors – motivation, health, location, etc. – you begin to find opportunities.

College Football Betting: Kansas State looks to snap bowl win drought

12.12.2013     11:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Michigan vs. Kansas State -3.5 O/U 56

For all the pointspread success Kansas State has had during Bill Synder's second stint in Manhattan (a very quiet 7-5 ATS this year), the Wildcats haven't had much of it in the postseason. Since Snyder's return in 2009, KSU is 0-3 SU/ATS. And as a program, they haven't won a bowl game since 2002.

2012: 35-17 SU/ATS (+8) Loss vs. Oregon
2011: 29-16 SU/ATS (+9) Loss vs. Arkansas
2010: 36-34 SU/ATS (+1) Loss vs. Syracuse
2006: 37-10 SU/ATS (+8.5) Loss vs. Rutgers
2003: 35-28 SU/ATS (-7) vs. Loss vs. Ohio State

“Nobody on our whole team has won a bowl game, with the exception of coaches,” junior linebacker Jonathan Truman said. “We need it and we want it really bad.

“We’ve tried our best in preparation in the past, the Read more

Buffalo -2.5 at San Diego State O/U 54

San Diego State talks about its preparation for the likelihood of cold weather at next Saturday's Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. According to one article, SDSU's 27-20 win at Air Force earlier this season was its coldest (49 degrees) game since 2009. Temperatures at last year's Potato Bowl were fairly mild (low 40's/high 30's). The current 10-day forecast (which has little to no accuracy) has game day temps in the high 20's.
