MLB Betting News: Despite past success, Norris an iffy play vs. Cardinals

06.06.2012     12:38 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis (Wainwright) -135 at Houston (Norris) O/U 8

Bud Norris has made our "watch list" after seeing reports of a hip flexor injury. Over his last two starts, Norris allowed 12 earned runs and 15 hits in 6.1 innings. Note that Norris has a proven track record against the Cards (7-2, 2.17 ERA, 1.15 WHIP). The price however may be too rich on Adam Wainwright who despite pitching better of late is a tough sell as a road favorite.

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Cleveland Indians at Detroit Tigers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Gomez) at Detroit (Scherzer) -160 O/U 9
Recommendation: Detroit

It’s not hard to make a strong case for betting against Jeanmar Gomez these days. The Indians fifth starter has pitched like a fifth starter, lit up for 16 hits and 11 earned runs over 10.2 innings of work on his last two trips to the hill. His track record against the Tigers lineup is nothing short of awful. He faced them last September: 4.2 innings, ten hits and eight earned runs allowed. He faced them last April, again giving up ten hits (only three runs) in a short 5.2 inning outing. In his previous start against the Tigers in 2010, it was more of the same: eight runs and ten hits allowed in just three innings of work. With a 15.26 ERA, a 3.26 WHIP and a .465 batting average against in his career at Comerica Park, this is not a hurler primed for a strong effort tonight.

While Gomez is a dead nuts bet against hurler tonight, Detroit’s Max Scherzer is in great current form, and he beat the Read more

MLB Gambling News: Philadelphia Phillies continue to struggle

06.06.2012     07:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia's struggles continue with a fourth straight loss last night. Cliff Lee (-6.5 units) dropped to 0-3 despite a 2.92 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. The offense has scored only 16 runs in his nine winless starts. The Phillies are now 28-29 (12-17 at home) and in last place in the National League East. And the return of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard looks to be a few weeks away.

Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are scheduled to take a few more baby steps on their excruciatingly long journey down rehab road. Utley will be the designated hitter in an extended-spring-training game for the second time in three days, and Howard is scheduled to hit, but not run the bases, in the same game.

"We couldn't generate nothing," a frustrated Manuel said. "That's the inconsistency of our team. Tonight, we didn't have a whole lot of chances to score. Their guy kind of shut us down."

MLB Handicapping: Minnesota's trio of young pitchers are producing profits

06.06.2012     07:06 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I spoke on yesterday's Sportsmemo Podcast about some of Minnesota's young starting pitchers. Of the current three – Scott Diamond, PJ Walters and Cole De Vries – none are considered “highly touted” nor are they all that “young” being 25, 27 and 27 respectively. But while Diamond and Walters had thrown a few innings at the MLB level prior to this year, it appears that the trio has had somewhat of an advantage this season in facing various teams for the first time. Despite being 13 games under .500 for the year, the Twins are 10-4 +9.2 units when the trio starts. That is obviously better than the 10-21 record the team has when Carl Pavano, Francisco Liriano and Nick Blackburn toss. The problem though is how is the trio going to handle facing teams for a second and third time? Like a lot of Minnesota pitchers, Diamond, Walters and De Vries don't miss a lot of bats and have displayed average velocity. Combined, they've posted 53 strikeouts in 85 innings. That worries me when innings and fatigue start to become factors later in the season – assuming that they make it that far.

Los Angeles Kings have been extremely kind to bettors

06.05.2012     03:27 PM     Printer Friendly
With the Los Angeles Kings one win away from wrapping up an improbable Stanley Cup run we were curious where their postseason profits (currently +14.3 units) stacked up compared to some of the other major sport title winners.

2012: Los Angeles (15-2, +14.3 units)

MLB
2009: NY Yankees (11-4, +6.3 units)
2010: San Francisco (11-4, +9.5 units)
2011: St. Louis (11-7, +5.9 units)

NCAA Basketball
2010: Duke (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS, +3.9 units)
2011: UConn (6-0 SU, 5-1 ATS, +3.9 units)
2012: Kentucky (6-0 SU, 4-2 ATS, +1.8 units)

NBA

MLB Handicapping: Minnesota's Liriano hoping for second straight solid outing

06.05.2012     01:58 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Liriano) at Kansas City (Chen) -125 O/U 9

Of pitchers who have thrown 40 or more innings this season, Francisco Liriano has the second highest walk rate (6.3 per 9 IP) in the league behind the disaster of all disasters, Ubaldo Jimenez. But after being demoted to bullpen and given yet another chance to start, Liriano showed above average command last time out against Oakland with only two walks. It turned out to be his best outing of the season – albeit at pitcher friendly Target Field against the weakest offense in the American League. Nevertheless, it was a step in the right direction and one that occurred in large part by Liriano keeping the ball down in the strike zone. He's by no means completely trustworthy (7.20 ERA, 1.88 WHIP) at this point but worth following for tonight’s start in Kansas City.

MLB Betting News: St. Louis' Garcia makes first start since elbow issues

06.05.2012     01:40 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis -135 (Garcia) at Houston (Harrell) O/U 9

Keep an eye on St. Louis Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia as he makes his first start since having his spot in the rotation skipped due to elbow discomfort. Garcia had been pitching OK prior to the setback though for a third straight year, we’re seeing a decline with his fastball velocity. Also note that for whatever reason, Garcia has a spotty history against Houston. The Astros pounded him for six runs back in early May and last season, he failed to record a quality outing in four tries (6.20 ERA).

MLB Gambling News: Chris Young slated to start for New York Mets

06.05.2012     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Young) at Washington (Zimmermann) -160 O/U 7

Chris Young will make his seasonal debut tonight against Washington. Young has been hampered by injuries for the better part of the last three seasons. In 2010 and 2011, he made only four starts – with surprisingly strong results (44 IP, 7 ERs). There are some concerns though as Young topped out at 84 mph in his most recent Minor League start.

“My arm is not like it was when I was 25 and I can’t expect it to be,” Young said. “But I know how to pitch. I’m going to be as prepared and confident going out on the mound and hopefully that stuff will help and the results will take care of themselves.”
