Big East Tournament Betting Preview

Big East Conference Tournament Preview

This is the final Big East Tournament so especially expect the eight original members to bring complete focus and effort to their matchups. The 15-team league will only have a 14-team field since Connecticut’s low APR scores prevent them from participating. As always, multiple upsets are extremely possible. My power ratings indicate that on this Madison Square Garden neutral site floor there are eight teams separated by only 9.5 points. However, none of the bottom four teams playing in the first round appear capable of duplicating Connecticut’s Cinderella five-day run in 2011. That being said, there are teams playing on the second day that could repeat Louisville’s four-win run to the title as last year’s No. 7 seed. The top of this league possesses a lot of power and it’s possible that either No. 1 Georgetown or No. 2 Louisville could grab a top seed in the NCAA Tournament if they win this championship. Last season, the favorites were very strong here going 11-4 against the spread while totals went 5-10 O/U. Just to show how volatile the ATS results can be here in MSG, two years ago Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Dallas Mavericks at Minnesota Timberwolves

Dallas -6.5 at Minnesota O/U 200.5
Recommendation: Dallas

Somehow, someway, the Mavericks are still in the Western Conference playoff hunt sitting just three games out of the eighth and final spot. The possibility of making the playoffs has Dallas playing with game-by-game focus which is more than this crippled Minnesota team has going for it right now. Down to just nine players and missing three key starters including center Nikola Peković, the Timberwolves are running on fumes. Dallas’ frontline advantages and their depth figure to be problematic for Minnesota tonight and it helps that the Mavs continue to be a rested team. Without any semblance of a go to scorer, the T-Wolves faltered miserably in their first game without Pekovic last night against Denver getting outscored 61-39 in the second half. Back-to-back games with a shorthanded team coming from the mile high altitude doesn’t bode well for Minnesota against a Dallas team still playing with a Read more

West Coast Conference Tournament Betting Preview

West Coast Conference Tournament Preview

Overview: The WCC is another mid-major conference that goes to great lengths in order to assure their top teams have the shortest route possible to the championship. No. 1 seed Gonzaga along with No. 2 St. Mary’s get to sit and watch until the semifinals which will take place on the fourth day of tourney action. Because every team in the nine team conference qualifies, there is a No. 8 vs. No. 9 play-in game between Portland and Loyola Marymount which kicks off the tournament later this evening. Portland defeated LMU twice this season (68-64 Jan 12 @ LMU and 69-60 Feb 7 at home). Loyola has led each of the two games by double digits either at halftime or into the second half. The Orleans Arena venue in Las Vegas has been hosting this tournament since 2009 and it provides a very slight fan advantage to BYU. Gonzaga and St. Mary’s have won 12 of the last 14 conference tournaments rotating the last four. Last season, top seed St. Mary’s closed as a +2.5 point underdog to the Zags and won in overtime 78-74. San Diego is the only other team to capture the crown since 1999 winning twice Read more

College Basketball Betting: Revenge plus head coaches' feud has Marshall geared up

Southern Miss -6 at Marshall O/U 139.5

Marshall is obviously looking for some home revenge tonight after Southern Mississippi blasted the Herd 102-46 earlier this season, but the dislike for their opponent runs even deeper.

It's because Tyndall and Herrion don't like each other. That stems from an incident when Tyndall was coaching Morehead State and Herrion contacted him in hopes of scheduling a game.

After Tyndall declined, I wrote about Marshall's non-conference scheduling problems and chided Morehead State for not playing an annual series with the nearby Herd. That prompted Tyndall to contact Herrion and accuse him of putting me up to writing the column. That, of course, is preposterous.

Yet, that's what led to Tyndall running up the score.

College Basketball Gambling Free Play: Washington State Cougars at Washington Huskies

Washington State at Washington -7 O/U 130.5
Recommendation: Over

It’s certainly been a different type of season for the Washington Huskies who have now uncharacteristically rattled off six consecutive unders. Decreased tempo and miserable shooting (42.5 FG%, 29.5 3pt%) in PAC-12 play have been the root causes of UW’s scoring troubles. Today’s opponent Washington State has seen their defensive efforts gradually descend to the point where they’ve now allowed an average of 73.6 ppg over its last seven games and 67 or more in all of those. Despite fewer possessions in the games during this span, five of the contests have climbed over today’s posted total. Expect Washington, which recorded a conference season high 53% from the field in the first meeting, to be able to post a similar number here. The game scenario figures to be one where the late game margin is one that will breed extra trips to the free throw line and quick possessions which should tack points on. Washington should be ready to go here as they kick off a regular season ending three-game homestand and like WSU, their defense has been weak lately allowing between 47%-49% shooting in three of their last four games. The lower mid-range total of 130.5 is in an area that presents enough leeway to cash a ticket on the over.

College Basketball Handicapping: Four teams vying for two spots in OVC Tournament

03.01.2013     02:21 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The OVC regular season ends Saturday and while five of the eight conference tournament seeds are locked up, there are four teams fighting for the two remaining spots. Only eight of the league’s 12 teams participate in its postseason event so four will be staying home (Jacksonville State is banned from this year’s tournament due to their low APR score (academic progress rating) and Austin Peay has been eliminated. Here are the top five seeds for next week’s OVC Tournament:

#1 – Belmont
#2 – Murray State
#3 – Eastern Kentucky
#4 – Tennessee State
#5 – Morehead State
#6 – SEMO

With the stage set for what could be a drama filled Saturday, let’s take a look at the games of importance:

SIU-Edwardsville @ Eastern Illinois – The winner of this game is in. If SIU-Edwardsville loses, they can still get in if Tennessee-Martin loses at Austin Peay. Should Eastern Illinois lose, they would need Tennessee Tech and Tennessee-Martin to both lose. EIU has designated this a “Blue Out” game encouraging all fans to come dressed in blue and help the Read more
