MLB Handicapper Free Play: Seattle Mariners at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Elias) at Philadelphia (Williams) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Seattle -1.5 R/L

The Mariners are becoming a force during this month of August going 11-4 in its 15 games thus far. In addition, with the way Seattle is currently playing it’s becoming clear to those watching that they’re rapidly turning into a team nobody will want to play should the M’s get into the playoffs. Mariners’ pitching has been an anchor here in August allowing just 30 runs for an average of 2.0 per game along with an ERA of 1.89. However, it’s the bats that are transforming Seattle into a potential playoff threat. 76 runs have been posted by Seattle this month giving them a +46 run differential in the 15 game span which includes a .263 BA, .351 OBP, and .753 OPS. The most impressive betting number of all is Seattle (consistently a reluctant run-line choice by bettors) has won all 11 games this month by 2+ runs. Tonight’s starter Roenis Elias has been effective lately Read more

College Football Handicapping: The impact returning experience has on the betting markets

08.13.2014     07:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Expanding on yesterday’s Sportsmemo Podcast discussion on the impact Phil Steele continues to have on the early season college football betting markets. We took the top 10 most and least experienced teams according to Steele’s Combined Experience Chart and looked at their Week 1 lines moves based on CRIS’s opening and current numbers. Not surprisingly a majority of the “experienced” teams with boarded Week 1 games were bet whereas the “least experienced” teams were bet against.

Top 10 Most Experienced Teams - Week 1
UTSA: +12.5 to +11 at Houston
UL-Lafayette: Non-boarded vs. Southern
Indiana: Non-boarded vs. Indiana State
Central Michigan: Non-boarded vs. UT-Chattanooga
Mississippi State: -29 to -31 vs. Southern Miss
Auburn: -21.5 vs. Arkansas (-21 or -20.5 at other offshore shops)
Houston: -12.5 to -11 vs. UTSA
Idaho: +34.5 to +35.5 at Florida
Maryland: Non-boarded vs. James Madison
Army: Bye Week

College Football Betting: Marshall's defense should dominate foes

08.13.2014     06:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We spoke on Tuesday's podcast about Marshall's improvement on the defensive end last year under defensive coordinator Chuck Heater. The Thundering Herd went from 103rd to 35th in terms of total defense. This year's group returns eight starters and will have the luxury of facing one of the easiest schedules in the country - particularly from an offensive perspective. Below are some quick offensive notes on MU's opponents this season. Marshall is a 24-point road favorite vs. Miami-Ohio for Week 1.

Miami-Ohio - 124th total offense LY
Rhode Island - Ranked 206th Sagarin LY, two spots ahead of EMU
Ohio - Only 3 returning starters on offense, lost senior QB
Akron - 108th total offense LY
Old Dominion - First year FBS
MTSU - Only 4 returning starters on offense, lost senior QB
FIU - Worst offense in the nation LY
Florida Atlantic - 83rd total offense LY, new head coach/system
Southern Miss - 116th total offense Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Minnesota Twins at Houston Astros

Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Milone) -110 at Houston (Peacock) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Minnesota

Inclined to step in against Houston starter Brad Peacock who is in the midst of one of the worst stretches of pitching MLB has seen this year.  Over his last five starts, Peacock has not made it into the sixth inning once resulting in a 9.90 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and 1-4 W-L record. Causing plenty of trouble for him these past 20 innings are his 12 BB and 52 TB allowed which includes six HR. Houston even sent the righty down to Triple-A between his most recent starts but his last time out he was tagged for eight runs in five innings. With Joe Mauer scheduled to return tonight off of a successful 6-for-15 rehab stint, Minnesota’s lineup becomes more dangerous. Minnesota also welcomes former A’s starter Tommy Milone into their rotation tonight and the familiar battery of Milone-Suzuki figures to be a positive. Blind to the HP umpire at this time but should tonight’s balls and strikes caller Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Tampa Bay Rays at Oakland A's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tampa Bay (Cobb) at Oakland (Samardzija) -140 O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

Even without knowledge of tonight’s home plate umpire at this time, compelled to play the percentages and grab a piece of under 7. Tampa Bay’s starter Alex Cobb has been peaking over his past six outings going 5-0 with a 2.65 ERA. Manager Joe Maddon described Cobb’s changeup during this span as “pretty spectacular” and Cobb has used it very successfully all season as an out pitch. He’s racked up 22 Ks in his last two starts and 39 over his last 37.1 IP with a 5:1 K:BB ratio. Cobb has also thrown extremely well against Oakland the last three seasons posting a 3-1 mark and 1.42 ERA against them including 6.2 innings of shutout ball earlier this season. With the A’s offense struggling a bit right now minus the bats of traded Yoenis Cespedes and injured Coco Crisp (could return during this series), Cobb figures to perform well in this spot. The Rays offense however should Read more
