NBA Handicapping: Dallas Mavericks getting it done on defense

Dallas at Philadelphia O/U 181

Pretty impressive that earlier this season the Dallas Mavericks set a franchise record for holding 15 straight opponents under 100 points. And they are currently in the midst of another nine-game stretch of sub-100 basketball. Some of the success can be attributed to Brendan Haywood who has filled in nicely on the defensive end of the floor for Tyson Chandler.

NBA Handicapping: Dallas tries to snap three-game losing streak at Denver

Dallas at Denver -1 O/U 196

After a nice 6-1 stretch, the Dallas Mavericks have hit the skids with three straight losses; the last of which coming at Cleveland on Saturday. This is a banged up basketball team but amazingly they had three days off prior to tonight's game in Denver. It is the start of a tough stretch for the Mavs: at Denver, at Minnesota, vs. Portland, vs. LA Clippers, vs. Denver and at Philadelphia.

"I definitely didn't think we were going to lose in Cleveland," said Nowitzki, who ironically is coming off his best two-game scoring run of the season, yet the team couldn't crack 90 and lost both. "I was going to think we were going to win either OKC or Indy, but we lost those two. So it is what it is."

The Super Bowl is in the history books but the NBA All-Star Game is already on the horizon and there are all kinds of interesting goings on around the league right now.  This week, I’ll focus on a handful of teams with notes and quotes that can point us in the right direction for our NBA wagers.

Dallas Mavericks – When you look at the Dallas statistical profile this year, one thing stands out like a sore thumb.  Dirk Nowitzki  – the Mavs longtime superstar and the guy who guided them to their first ever NBA title last summer – has basically been a non-factor from Day 1.  Last year, Dirk led the team in scoring at 23 points per game.  He was the Mavs #2 rebounder, behind Tyson Chandler.  He shot better than 51% from the floor for the entire season, and better than 39% from three point range.  But, even after taking four games off to ‘improve his conditioning’, Dirk’s 2012 numbers can only be considered a major disappointment.

The numbers don’t lie.  Dirk is scoring only 17.2 points per game this year.  His shooting percentage is down to 45.5% and Read more

NBA Betting News: Suns' Nash a game time decision vs. Dallas

Dallas -3.5 at Phoenix O/U 186

As of this afternoon, Phoenix point guard Steve Nash (thigh) is listed as a game time decision. The move towards Dallas (-2 to -3.5) suggests Nash won't play – that or just a straight fade of the woeful Suns. Keep in my though that Dallas played an overtime contest last night and four players logged 35+ minutes including Dirk Nowitzki – his first game back from an injury.

NBA Betting Alert: Dallas says Nowitzki needs to get back in shape

Phoenix at Dallas -5.5 O/U 183

The Dallas Mavericks have decided to shut down Dirk Nowitzki who according to reports has a bum knee and is out of shape. He won't rest but rather go through an intense regiment over the next week in order to shore up some of his issues. Starting tonight, he'll miss three games; at home vs. Phoenix, Minnesota and Utah.

"We're going to shut Dirk down for four games, from game activity,'' coach Rick Carlisle said. "At this point, we feel he needs an uninterrupted eight days of work to resolve some physical issues and some conditioning issues. This is the decision of (athletic trainer) Casey Smith and me.

"If it were up to Dirk, he would play. But right now, we feel the right thing is to take this time, get some things resolved and hopefully by next Sunday, he'll be feeling a lot better and ready to Read more

NBA Handicapping: Clippers blasted in Utah sans Paul, return home to face Dallas

Dallas at LA Clippers

Without Chris Paul, or any real desire to put forth an effort, this happened to the Los Angeles Clippers last night. Head coach Vinny Del Negro wasn't shy about voicing his disappointment. The Clips still trail a majority of the team in terms of games played but will be facing the third game of a back-to-back-to-back tonight against Dallas. As of this morning, Paul (hamstring) was listed as questionable.

"I didn’t like our approach," Del Negro said. "I didn’t like our focus. I didn’t like our toughness. I didn’t like our energy to start the game. We dug ourselves a hole.

"We’re not going to win a lot of games playing with that type of effort. I don’t Read more

NBA Handicapping: Dallas Mavericks one of many teams struggling to score

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some startling numbers on how bad offenses have been in the NBA with a focus on the Dallas Mavericks who shot 35% in last night's ugly 73-70 loss to the Lakers. There are currently 21 teams shooting 45% or worse – up from last year's 13. Nineteen teams are averaging 96 ppg or less.

"Hasn't been there all year," Terry said of a Mavs offense that ranks 21st in scoring at 92.6 points a game and 22nd in field-goal percentage at 43.1. "But defensively, we're doing our job. We just have to make shots. Stay encouraged; defensively we're playing our ass off. We'll get there. Again, it was just an uncharacteristic, off-shooting night for us. I'm not really concerned."

"Throughout the season," said Dirk Nowitzki, averaging just 17.9 points on 46.9 percent shooting and 19.2 percent from 3-point range, "I expect a lot of ugly games like that to happen. It's just normal."

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Dallas Mavericks at Detroit Pistons

Dallas -6.5 at Detroit O/U 182.5
Recommendation: Dallas

It’s very difficult to back the Pistons and their list of negatives at this point. The team is in a horrendous scoring slump averaging 76 ppg over their last four contests. They are playing tonight for the fourth time in five days and shorthanded to boot with Rodney Stuckey (30.5 min pg, 10.8 ppg, team leading 4.8 apg) and Charlie Villanueva nursing injuries. Detroit has lost its last four games by 16, 23, 23 and 16 points. Compounding their potential fatigue issue this evening is the fact that Dallas is finally rested having the previous two days off for the first time this season. Dallas has bounced back from a rough 1-4 start by going 3-1 its last four and covering the pointspread in all three victories. The temporary loss of point guard Jason Kidd (lower back injury) isn’t likely to bother the Mavericks much in this game as veteran Delonte West, who is an exceptional defender, can check Pistons rookie starter Brandon Read more

NBA Handicapper Preview: Minnesota Timberwolves at Toronto Raptors

Minnesota +3 at Toronto O/U 187

The Raptors are off two truly embarrassing performance – a 97-62 loss to the 76ers and 12-point home loss vs. New Jersey. Sounds like the same old Raptors, right? It’s amazing that Bryan Colangelo is still in charge of this organization with a roster consistently short on talent, defensive ability and toughness. However, he perhaps finally got something right with the hiring of new head coach Dwane Casey. Casey gets a ton of credit for being the man in charge of the Dallas Mavericks defense last year and some of that acumen seems to rubbing off on the Raptors. It will be interesting to see if Casey can help this still-below-average team bounce back after two poor outings.

I’ve watched quite a bit of the Timberwolves this year, and there’s no doubt this is a much improved basketball team. The hiring of head coach Rick Adelman is a positive step and a true upgrade over Kurt Rambis. Kevin Love is outstanding and deserving of a Read more

NBA Handicapping: Carlisle pleads for better defense from Mavericks

12.29.2011     07:31 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas at Oklahoma City -6 O/U 196

Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle asking for a much better effort on defense after allowing 105 to Miami and 115 to Denver.

"It'll be the major theme every day going forward," coach Rick Carlisle said. "When you defend well, your offense is always going to be better, and when you run offense well, your defense will be better."

"Right now we've got to start the game with five guys in a stance and get after it defensively," Carlisle said. "And look, what I told the guys is, 'Hey, you've got to play to exhaustion and then we'll get somebody else in there.' We've got to establish a tone defensively. Any other stuff about rotation and who's playing is insignificant to the major theme, which is hard play and tough defense."
