NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards remain an absolute mess

11.14.2012     07:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington at Dallas O/U 192

Making fun of the Washington Wizards never gets old. For whatever reason, this year's group has decided that three-pointers are the key to victory. Unfortunately, they are shooting 27.9%. AJ Price is hoisting 6.8 threes per game (26.8%) while rookie Bradley Beal, who leads the team in scoring at 12.2 ppg, is averaging 4.5 attempts per game (33.3%). The Wizards are 0-6 SU but somehow 3-3 ATS in part because opposing teams have a difficult time taking them seriously.

“When you struggle offensively like that, there are reasons for that,” Coach Randy Wittman said after the Wizards opened the season 0-6 for the second year in a row. “I thought the first quarter was one of our better quarters. We moved the ball fast. Very little holding of the ball. Very little searching for shots.

Timmy D makes Ali-like return to the NBA

If you got tickets to Friday's Mavericks-Knicks game, there is a small chance this guy may pass you the popcorn you just purchased.

“I don’t think there is any reason why they’d remove me from the stadium,” Donaghy told The Linemakers via phone from his Sarasota, Fla. home. “I’m there to take in a game and look at some live action and do a bit of scouting. I’m not even too sure that anyone is really going to notice me, to be honest with you.”

“I’m not saying anyone is gambling or any ref is doing something they shouldn’t in the game,” Donaghy said. “But they have tendencies and call a game a certain way.”

NBA Regular Season Over/Under Win Recommendation - Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers
Recommendation: Under
Pinnacle: 46.5un-120
5Dimes: 47.5un-125
CRIS: 46
Greek: 47

The 76ers were great to us during the 2010-11 season, which coincided with the hiring of head coach Doug Collins.  We banked massive profits after their troubling 3-13 SU start – they finished 41-41 and were an ATS machine.  Last year, in the lockout shortened season, it looked like Philadelphia was the same hard-trying team with solid chemistry as they jumped out to an 18-7 start.  However, this was clearly a mirage as they finished the regular season on a 17-24 run, and the goodwill Collins created clearly had left the building.  They did rally to beat the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the playoffs, but there’s no way that happens with a healthy Derrick Rose on the floor.

The truth of the matter is Collins largely lost this team back in February.  He has a track record of coming in and getting young players to “buy in” before he eventually tears everyone around him down to the point of no return.  In this era and with today’s player it can happen Read more

Amazingly, the underdog has covered 10 straight games in the Oklahoma City-Dallas series. The Thunder currently hold a 2-0 lead but the Mavs came away with both ATS victories. Despite that trend, Dallas was bet up from an opener of -1 to -3.5 for tonight's contest.

NBA Playoff Gambling: Recapping a wild weekend

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA regular season was rather lackluster. TV ratings were mediocre at best and there was a legitimate absence of compelling story lines to draw casual fans into the fray. And frankly, the condensed, lockout shortened season left a lot to be desired from a visual perspective – there was no shortage of ugly basketball games between Christmas and the last week of April.

But the opening weekend of the playoffs was an absolute masterpiece of compelling story lines and intense basketball. All eight Game 1’s gave us something to think about, write about and consider as playoff action heats up this week.

The weekend started with a blowout as Chicago thrashed Philly, leading by 20 in the fourth quarter before a late Sixers rally cut the final margin of victory to 12. The Bulls simply overwhelmed the 76ers for most of the game, dominating the low post defensively while breaking down Philadelphia’s defense, creating high percentage shot attempts on the other end of the floor. But the entire complexion of the series – and the playoffs as a whole – changed rather dramatically late in the fourth when Chicago’s star point guard Derrick Read more

It’s not unusual for a middle-of-the-pack baseball team to get hot at the right time and carry that momentum all the way to a World Series title, like the St. Louis Cardinals did last October. In the NFL, we’ve seen similar situations out of Wild Card teams that get hot at the right time and carry that momentum all the way to a Super Bowl victory, like the Giants and Packers have done over the past two seasons. In the NHL, regular season results mean even less – last years’ Stanley Cup win from the no. 3 seed Boston Bruins was no shocker when looking at historical data from the past 20 years.

The NBA is different. Talent and playoff experience, not momentum, tend to produce winning results in these physical, grueling seven game playoff series. Only one true longshot, the sixth seed Houston Rockets, has won a title in the last 30 years, and the Rockets were the defending champs at the time; not a true longshot per se. When the third seed Mavericks won the title last year, it was considered to be a major shocker. Bottom line: the best NBA teams in the regular season tend to be the best NBA teams in the postseason, as long as they stay Read more

NBA late-season situational handicapping

I started a thread in the Sportsmemo posting forum about the late season playoff push and Western Conference teams playing for the final playoff spots. Here is a list of the teams battling for a playoff position and a top-8 spot along with their remaining schedules.

5. Memphis (35-25)... at Minn, NO, at Char, Port, Cleve, Orl
6. Dallas (34-27)...at Utah, Hou, GS, at Chic, at Atl
7. Denver (33-27)...at Hou, LAC, at Phoenix, Orl, at OKC, at Minn
8. Houston (32-28)...Denver, at Dallas, at NO, GS, at Miami, NO
9. Phoenix (31-29)...Port, OKC, LAC, Denver, at Utah, SA
10. Utah (31-30)...Dallas, at Port, Orl, Phoenix, Port

Phoenix holds the tiebreaker advantage over Utah while the Jazz have the tiebreaker edge over Houston and Denver.

The Nuggets beat the Rockets last night in Denver and play at Houston tonight in a home and away back-to-back. The Suns are a huge, adjusted favorite (-11) over the Trailblazers tonight after Portland saw their final outside chance at the playoffs slip away with a last second loss at Sacramento Sunday.

Utah has a huge game tonight at home against the defending champion Dallas Read more

NBA Gambling: Orlando Magic try to bounce back after awful showing in New York

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas at Orlando -5.5 O/U 186.5

Don't let the 22-point loss fool you; it was MUCH worse for the Orlando Magic last time out against the New York Knicks. During the second and third quarters, the Magic were outscored 55-30! It wasn't the first "no show" loss for Orlando this season. Last week they were pounded by a Derrick Rose-less Chicago Bulls squad 85-59. In early March, they lost at Charlotte by 16. Tonight, they’ll try to bounce back against the Dallas Mavericks.

"I think there's a lot of times throughout the year where we kind of take days off or just think we can shoot our way back in games. For us to really think of ourselves as a championship team, we've got to have an identity. We don't have that every game. When we do have it, when we bring it, we compete with anybody

NBA Handicapping: Miami Heat get back to basis after two straight losses

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas at Miami -8 O/U 188.5

After back-to-back double-digit losses, the Miami Heat got back to basics in preperation for tonight's game against Dallas. Head coach Erik Spoelstra noted that the pedal-to-the-metal philosophy used early in the season has been missing. Over their last 13 games, the Heat are 7-6 SU, 4-9 ATS and 3-9-1 O/U.

"You watch our Christmas Day game compared to the last two games, of the force and pace that we played with that day, it's night-and-day different," Spoelstra said. "We can control that. We respect the Dallas Mavericks obviously from last year . . . but right now, out of due respect, it's about us, it's about getting to our game, our identity."

"Today was about recalibrating," Spoelstra said following the session. "It's not about watching film. It's not about talking. It's about getting
