Big Ten Tournament Betting Free Play: Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Purdue Boilermakers

Nebraska +6 vs. Purdue O/U 120
Recommendation: Nebraska

If you've been watching these conference tournaments you know that winning by margin (or straight up for that matter) isn't easy when you’re a favorite. And it becomes even more difficult when the team laying the points spent much of the season struggling to achieve mediocrity. That appears to be the case for Purdue who finds itself in a position of laying -6 after a strong finish to the regular season. The Boilermakers found a way to win in Madison and were very respectable in a five-point home loss to Michigan. In the season finale, they rolled over a toxic Minnesota squad, 89-73. To me however, Purdue is being priced based on a three-game swatch of games rather than its entire body of work. It is hard to say a lot of positive things about Nebraska who finished 5-13 in Big Ten play. They were outclassed on most nights against the league's elite but against more comparable foes, they were able to Read more

Big Ten Tournament Betting Preview

Big Ten Tournament Preview

Michigan State cut down the nets last year in Banker’s Life Fieldhouse as the winner of the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans were the No. 1 seed which marked the fifth time in the last six years the top team won.  This year’s event moves to the United Center in Chicago and the bullseye will fall on the Indiana Hoosiers who won the regular season crown and earned the No. 1 seed after knocking off Michigan last Sunday.  However, this is as deep a tournament field as I can remember since the inaugural event in 1998.  For much of the regular season you could throw a blanket over Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and even Wisconsin.  Keep in mind in late December Minnesota and Illinois were respectively ranked 11th and 12th in the country and then play in the No. 8 vs. No. 9 game tomorrow.

First Round Pick/Darkhorse:  Iowa
The Hawkeyes are a longshot to get to the Big Dance, but a rapidly improving basketball team, with a 20-11 record.  The Hawkeyes showed improvement down the stretch by winning six of their last eight games outright, Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Pick: Detroit Pistons at San Antonio Spurs

Detroit +12.5 at San Antonio O/U 200
Recommendation: Detroit

We’ll take a look at the Detroit Piston's plus the big points tonight against San Antonio. Injuries have started to really pile up for the Spurs with Stephen Jackson and Gary Neal doubtful and Boris Diaw and Tony Parker out. Parker is quietly having an MVP-type season with 21.0 ppg and 7.6 assists. The Spurs have been able to succeed when parts of the "Big Three" sit or are injured but without Parker as well as the other injuries, it becomes tough to cover big numbers like what we're seeing tonight. Detroit comes in rested after losing at New Orleans 100-95 on Friday. I expect this to be a lower scoring game which San Antonio has a tendency to win but not cover when laying big points. Look for Detroit’s Greg Monroe to have a big day in the paint and for the Pistons to cash as a +12.5 underdog.

NBA Handicapping: Washington Wizards try to bounce back against New York Knicks

New York -2.5 at Washington O/U 193

On today's Sportsmemo Podcast, Erin Rynning discussed the situation with Washington's John Wall essentially calling out his teammates following Wednesday's loss to Detroit (click here for segment). Here's the article Erin was referencing from the Washington Times and the quote...

“I think it was great passes. I just think some of my teammates (didn’t) catch them, and some of them got tipped away,” he said following the game, “so just got to deal with it.”

That was Wall's response when asked what cause his seven turnover performance. Note that Wall is also shooting less than Read more

NBA Handicapping: Are they Washington Wizards running out of pointspread value?

02.27.2013     12:37 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit at Washington -7 O/U 190.5

When Washington's John Wall came back from injury in January, there was really no indication the Wizards were going to significantly improve. At the time they were 5-28 SU but were a very respectable 17-14-2 ATS. Now Wall has had no question had an impact but some of the credit should go to head coach Randy Whittman and the team's wiliness to keep fighting and more importantly defend. Regardless of the secret ingredient, what we do know is Washington is playing good basketball (13-9 SU since Wall's return) and has become a pointspread machine (17-5 ATS). It's been amazing to watch their transformation in the betting markets. In Wall's first two games back Washington was +3 vs. Read more
