College Basketball Gambling: Recapping Notre Dame's miracle win vs. Louisville and others

It was possibly the worst quintuple overtime thriller I’ve ever watched! Well, a truly ugly first 35 minutes…followed by a sluggish but entertainingly dramatic 30 additional minutes. Many of you watched too, so you know what I’m talking about. The last 35 minutes of on-the-clock action was very compelling basketball even if the game was far from a piece of artwork. If you missed it:

*We had your typical 50-something to 40-something type grinder brewing most of the night. Louisville led 49-45 with 2:30 left in regulation.

*Louisville pulled out to what seemed like a safe lead with 90 seconds left…setting up the standard sequence of them shooting free throws while Notre Dame tried to make desperation treys. Louisville led 53-45 with 1:27 to go.

*Notre Dame made ONE…then TWO…then THREE very long range very forced desperation treys to force a late tie. Those bombs fell with 44-36-28 seconds left respectively.

*Louisville didn’t have Read more

College Basketball Betting: Fresno State leaning heavily on freshmen in tough Mountain West

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There have been times this season Fresno State's men's basketball team has had three and even four freshmen on the floor at the same time. That’s a tough way to go in the Mountain West, which is rated the second (Sagarin) or third (RPIratings.com) toughest conference in the country.

Coach Rodney Terry knows this, often using the refrain, "It's not going to happen overnight." The youth and inexperience may have cost FSU a win in the final minutes at No. 16 San Diego State last week.

Four freshmen have logged a total of 1,010 minutes already and it could be more, considering guard Marvelle Harris (373 minutes) has played 20 minutes or less four times, center Robert Upshaw (234 minutes) missed the first three games coming back from a knee injury, point guard Aaron Anderson (224 minutes) didn't make his first start until the 12th game of the season, and forward/center Tanner Giddings (179 minutes) did not play in one game and logged less than 10 minutes in five others.

Fresno State is getting more than twice as many minutes from freshman than any other Mountain West school except for UNLV. While 82.4% of the Rebels freshman minutes have been Read more

Wyoming Suspends Second-Leading Scorer Luke Martinez

Luke Martinez has been suspended indefinitely from the Wyoming basketball team as the result of a bar fight last month that left him with a broken finger.

According to the Star-Tribune, there were charges filed against Martinez this weekend as a result of the incident.

Martinez is the second-leading scorer for the Cowboys, a team that remained undefeated until last week and that has set themselves up nicely for a run at an NCAA tournament berth. There is no doubt that this injury — and the suspension — puts a dent into those plans.

Head coach Larry Shyatt has said that Martinez will not return to the team until the legal system has taken its course. For now, the Cowboys are going with a starting lineup consisting of three point guards and a pair Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Iowa State Cyclones at UNLV Rebels

Iowa State +9.5 at UNLV O/U 146.5
Recommendation: Iowa State

Unless UNLV's home court is worth upwards of eight points – which it isn't – tonight's game against Iowa State is vastly inflated. And that inflation is with a small adjustment after the Rebels were laying as much as -12 in last night's outright loss to Oregon. Based on what I've seen, there is little to no difference between UNLV, Oregon, Cincinnati and Iowa State. In the loss to Oregon, UNLV was exposed repeatedly on the defensive end, particularly off the dribble late in the game when they desperately needed stops. Three-point shooting was a concern heading into the season as the Rebels lost their top three shooters. Last night against the Ducks, they were 8-of-30 for 27%. Iowa State meanwhile went toe-to-toe with a strong Cincinnati squad before giving way late (it was a 4-point game with less than a minute to go). The box score was dead even with the only difference being Cincinnati's Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Non-bye week teams prepare for final stretch

11.05.2012     11:53 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Updating our “non-bye week teams” for the 2012 season. We tracked the results of this profile (final three games both SU and ATS) dating back to 2008 and came up with 37-62 SU and 44-52 ATS betting against.

California - Lost at home last week to Washington as 4-point chalk. With Oregon coming to town and a trip to Corvallis, the season – and Jeff Tedford’s tenure? – appear all but over.

UNLV - Three winnable games left against Hawaii, Colorado State and Wyoming. The Rebels have covered five straight.

New Mexico - The depth-shy Lobos are already running on fumes. After blowing a big lead against Fresno State two weeks ago, UNM was a no-show in Saturday's 35-7 loss at UNLV. Three games remaining starting this week at home against Wyoming.

Western Michigan - Last week's win at Central Michigan snapped an 0-3 SU/ATS slide. Two games remaining against bottom feeders Buffalo and Eastern Michigan. Read more

College Football Handicapping: UNLV's Sherry expected to start behind banged up o-line

UNLV at San Diego State -18 O/U 57

UNLV's Nick Sherry (back) is expected to start Saturday's game at San Diego State. It doesn't sound like he is 100% and he'll be working behind an injury-riddled offensive line.

“Every week it seems like somebody’s dealing with something,” said senior tackle Yusef Rodgers, who this week is listed as doubtful with a leg injury.

“It is kind of discouraging because we had high hopes,” Rodgers said of the offensive line. “We feel like with what we’ve got, we’re still doing all right.”

College Football Betting Update: Nevada's Fajardo downgraded to doubtful

UPDATE

Nevada at UNLV

According to Sports Options, Nevada quarterback Cody Fajardo has been downgraded to "doubtful" for Saturday's rivalry game against UNLV. Devin Combs would start in his place. Not one offshore sportsbook has posted a line on the game. In Vegas, it appears that the Wynn was willing to toss out a number, opening with Nevada -9.5 on Sunday night. Today we've seen the line drop from -8.5 to -7 as a result of Fajrado's status.

College Football Gambling: Nevada QB Fajardo remains questionable

Nevada at UNLV

Nevada's do-everything quarterback Cody Fajardo is questionable for Saturday's game against rival UNLV. If unable to play, the Wolf Pack will start Devin Combs who filled in during last week's overtime win over Wyoming. Combs finished 11-of-19 for 217 yards and two touchdowns. Nevada has won seven straight in the series by margins of 37, 18, 35, 20, 7, 28 and 8. They covered six of those seven games. Oddsmakers have yet to put a line on Saturday's game.

“It’s the right side of his lower back into his lower hip," Ault said. "He’s getting treatment today and tomorrow, but it’s a severe muscle spasms. Those aren’t anything to sneeze at. It will be a day-to-day thing, but today and tomorrow we’ll have him stay off of it.”

College Football Gambling: UNLV says freshman QB will start vs. Minnesota

08.22.2012     12:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UNLV head coach Bobby Hauck announced that redshirt freshman quarterback Nice Sherry will be the team's Week 1 starter against Minnesota. The fact that Sherry beat out last year's starter, Caleb Herring, is a positive sign though Herring did post the worst QB rating (102.8) in the Mountain West last. UNLV is lined at 4.5un-285 wins according to 5Dimes. Some varying opinion on their Week 1 home opener against Minnesota. CRIS opened the Rebels +9 and it dropped to as low as +7. It then shot up to +10 at a few sportsbooks before settling back in at its current number of +9.

“I’m going to take chances. I’m going to throw the deep ball,” he said. “I’m going to throw the ball down the field. I’m going to extend the defense and make them respect the deep ball and respect the deep routes.”

“He keeps improving. He has a big arm,” Hauck said. “He has improved his understanding of what it will take to get the job done. We feel he gives us a chance to be competitive

The LVH Superbook is most assuredly a wiseguy friendly establishment, consistently ranked along with the Cantor books as the best sportsbooks in town. Jay Kornegay and his staff are industry leaders – the betting boards at LVH are loaded with a bevy of wagering opportunities that many books in town don’t offer; particularly around Super Bowl time.

Kornegay doesn’t ratchet up the juice either, offering ten cent lines during baseball season and twenty cent lines for his win totals on both NFL and college football. On their future book, the LVH is willing to adjust in both directions. For example, within the past week, the LVH adjusted their Odds to Win the Division for the 2012 NFL season on ten of the 32 teams.

Five of those teams are now more expensive to buy – less of a return on investment since last week. But five of those teams are now cheaper to buy, offering better value than they did a week ago. Many sportsbooks in town simply adjust odds down from their openers in response to the bets they’ve received, but the LVH is one book willing to adjust upwards in an effort to attract more handle.

The LVH took center stage Read more
