Westgate Superbook nears completion

11.09.2015     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas' Westgate Superbook is still working on various renovations and upgrades including 220 feet worth of big screen TVs.

“It’s the biggest screen of this type you’ll see inside, anywhere,” Kornegay says, looking across the Superbook at a digital image of a rushing attempt by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. “This is part of the plan to not only have the biggest sports book in Las Vegas but the best.”

“This was the owner’s idea, right from the start,” Kornegay said. “During his first walk-through, he realized the book hadn’t been touched in a really long time.”

Son of foreign dignitary welches on Las Vegas casino debt

11.03.2015     08:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Amazing that those who actually have money are often times the ones not willing to settle up on gambling debts. Take the son of France's foreign minister, Thomas Fabius. This dude rang up well over a million in debt as various Las Vegas casinos and wrote a bunch of bad checks to try to cover his losses. According to Clark County, if he shows his face on U.S. soil, he'll be arrested.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing bye-less College Football teams

11.02.2015     10:16 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seventeen college football teams enter November without having had a single bye week since the start of the season and without a bye this coming week.  Those teams are Arizona, Ball State, Boston College, Colorado, UConn, Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Miami-Ohio, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas Tech, Western Kentucky, Wisconsin and Wyoming.  Two more teams, North Texas and UMass, haven’t had byes since Week 1; teams that started their seasons a week late, but haven’t had a break since.  Is there anything unique or different about these non-bye squads?  Read on to find out.

Five of the 17 teams listed above don’t have any bye weeks at all.  Florida International, Miami-Ohio, Hawaii (with their 13 game schedule!), Arizona and Colorado will finish the season without a break.  Note that none of those five are going to play in a conference championship game, and only two (Arizona and FIU) have any realistic shot to make a bowl game.  Bye-less teams don’t tend to be very successful.  Most importantly for our purposes, they also don’t tend to cover many pointspreads Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Spartans and Buckeyes still highly ranked, still not covering pointspreads

10.12.2015     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Talking about the college football national championship race in mid-October is a pointless endeavor.  The mainstream media hypes the unbeaten teams and the elite level programs among the Power 5 conferences – that’s what boosts ratings, what the general public seems to be interested in.

But we all know that the teams that look elite in mid-October aren’t necessarily the teams that look elite when the pressure ratchets up in November and beyond.  Look no further than last year at this time, when teams like Auburn, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and Oklahoma all were ranked as Top 10 teams; championship contenders.  Those four teams finished the season with 19 losses between them, each team suffering at least four SU losses AFTER Week 7 of the season.

So here we are in 2015.  Ohio State has been ranked #1 since the preseason, and since the Buckeyes haven’t lost in SU fashion, they remain #1.  Michigan State opened as the #5 team in the country (AP Top 25; they were #6 in the coaches poll).  Currently, the Spartans rank #4 in the coaches poll and #7 in the AP poll, another team that the pundits have been Read more

Las Vegas casino dealers busted for $1 million scam

10.05.2015     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The long con. A couple of dealers and buddies took down the Bellagio for over $1 million over the span of two years. Of course we wouldn't be discussing this if they didn't get busted.

"Cheating is common," Taylor told The Associated Press. "We arrest 350 to 500 people a year for cheating or theft from a casino. But to have it go this long and for this much money is unusual."

"Fortunately, someone noticed and came forward," he said.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Early season college football money makers

09.21.2015     09:15 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re already a quarter of the way through the college football season, with the first three weekends in the rear view mirror.  In this week’s Wiseguy Report, I’m going to focus on the early season pointspread outliers.  Of the 128 FBS teams that we see lines on every week, 13 have gone 3-0 ATS to open the season. Ten have gone 0-3 ATS.  Because of space limitations, I’m going to focus on the 3-0 teams this week, while taking a closer look at the struggling ATS squads in next week’s article.

What should we expect from these hot ATS teams moving forward?  And how can we look for those outlier teams from the get-go next year?  Read on to find out.

Ole Miss, NC State, Northwestern, Ohio, Air Force, BYU, Buffalo, Middle Tennessee State, Rice, Southern Miss, Washington, Central Michigan and SMU.  The only obvious commonality between those 13 squads is their 3-0 ATS mark.  I could easily add the likes of Texas Tech and Colorado State to this list, both 2-0-1 ATS.  And 2-0 ATS Navy hasn’t played three games yet; worthy of inclusion into this discussion.

Las Vegas sportsbooks take hit on Week 1 NFL

09.14.2015     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With NFL favorites going 9-4 ATS on Sunday, it wasn't a great day for Las Vegas sportsbooks.

"I don't remember a worse opening Sunday," said Jay Kornegay, chief of the Westgate SuperBook and a 20-year veteran bookmaker.

"At our joint, the Rams winning was good for the parlays, but we had some pretty high, smart bets on the Rams," Simbal said. "We had 1.5 [times] more tickets on Seattle, but 2.5 times more money on the Rams. That was a game that was pretty much public vs. pro. And pro wins."
