Roger Goodell slowly warming to idea of the NFL in Las Vegas

03.29.2017     08:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Following the announcement that the Oakland Raiders will (eventually) move to Las Vegas, Roger Goodell offered his own "hot take." Goodell made it abundantly clear that he does not like gambling but seemed to acknowledge that the practice isn't as sinful as once thought. Though we found it interesting that he claimed Las Vegas was "different" from say, 10-20 years ago. Roger, we think you're getting your eras confused. What you meant to say was Las Vegas was no longer like this. Later, Goodell also mentioned that there was probably no need for sportsbooks to keep Las Vegas Raiders games off the board.

Owners vote in favor of Oakland to Las Vegas move

03.27.2017     12:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It's official. The Oakland Raiders announced they will relocate the team to Las Vegas. But don't get too excited. A stadium needs to be built and the team stated that they will remain in Oakland through at least the 2018 season.

"The Raiders were born in Oakland and Oakland will always be part of our DNA. We know that some fans will be disappointed and even angry, but we hope that they do not direct that frustration to the players, coaches and staff. We plan to play at the Coliseum in 2017 and 2018, and hope to stay there as the Oakland Raiders until the new stadium opens. We would love nothing more than to bring a championship back to the Bay Area."

Super Bowl LI Gambling: Vegas sportsbooks indicate small profit

02.06.2017     09:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Word around Las Vegas is that Super Bowl LI was a "small" win for the sportsbooks. The action on the game was fairly balanced but what hurt was all of the plus-price in-game wagers on New England. The good news for the books was that the game didn't land 3.

“In-play was the killer. That was, by far, the worst thing that ever happened,” William Hill sports book director Nick Bogdanovich said. “Everybody was taking the big plus price on New England when they were down 28-3.

“Any time a real good team gets down in any sport, it’s always bad. And you magnify it on the Patriots in the Super Bowl. They had infinite opportunities to take them on the money line, to take a little to make a lot.”

Gambling Update: Raiders to Vegas hits major speed bump

UPDATE

And just like that, the Raiders to Las Vegas goes from being chalk to an underdog.

“This is not a wrench in the wheel, the wheel fell off,” Clark County Commission chair Steve Sisolak told The Nevada Independent. “This is an enormous setback in my opinion.”

Super Bowl LI Gambling: Oddsmakers say no reason yet to move pointspread

01.31.2017     06:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A couple of Las Vegas oddsmakers talk about the Super Bowl's pointspread opening and still holding firm at "3."

“I’ve taken a couple big bets on the Patriots (six-figures),” said Wynn sportsbook director John Avello, “but even without those wagers we’d still be relatively even with bets and it’s also counting a good size pop we took on the Falcons as a result of being at +3 EVEN. There’s a ways to go before I start to move anything, but my initial thoughts were that if the number moved off 3 it wouldn’t be down to -2.5, but rather -3.5.”

“I want to get off 3 if I can, but if it doesn’t make sense then there’s no reason for us to go,” said Jay Rood, VP of race and sports for MGM Resorts.

Betting markets remain quiet with Super Bowl LI less than a week away

01.30.2017     09:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We're less than a week away from Super Bowl LI and thus far, the betting markets have been pretty quiet. Despite the "high profile vs. low profile" matchup, sportsbooks have kept the game lined at a field goal. Offshore, there are a number of books that are "leaning" towards the Falcons. Pinnacle and Matchbook have New England -3 (+108). CRIS, Greek, and Grande -3 (-105). But what really stands nearly every Las Vegas sportsbook is sitting at a flat -3 (-110). Golden Nugget has New England -3 (-115) and Treasure Island is asking bettors to lay an absurd 40 cents worth of juice on a Falcons +3.5 bet. There will no doubt be some movement and opinion as we near Sunday. Those is the Vegas area should be able to get Atlanta +3.5 at a reason price.
