College Football Handicapping: SEC conference schedules

05.30.2012     11:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Scheduling in the SEC typically goes a long way in determining who prospers both straight up and against the spread. A well-timed bye week can do wonders while the second of back-to-back road games can spell disaster. With the addition of Texas A&M and Missouri, SEC schedules appear even more chaotic than in previous editions. No surprise that the league is already working to create a more efficient format for next year and beyond. Unlike the Big Ten which league-wide follows the non-conference-and-then-conference-play format, the SEC is all across the board. Some teams open up with league games in Week 1 while others won't see a conference opponent until Week 4. For some teams in the East, SEC regular season play is over by the first week in November while others like Mississippi State close out the year with five straight league games all the way through Thanksgiving weekend. Lastly, check out Texas A&M's inaugural SEC campaign. Talk about a wakeup call! The Aggies have a four-week stretch of games vs. LSU, at Auburn, at Mississippi State and at Alabama. College Football Handicapping: Big Ten conference schedules

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It is not even June so we'll refrain from any serious schedule analysis for the upcoming college football season. We will however be taking a look at various conference schedules over the next few weeks starting today with the Big Ten. Nebraska has a tough draw in terms of its opponents from the Leaders Division. The Cornhuskers face Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State and miss out on Illinois, Indiana and Purdue. Penn State meanwhile skips both Michigan schools and has winnable road games at Illinois and Purdue. The Nittany Lions also have homes games vs. Wisconsin, Ohio State and Northwestern. Ohio State was given no favors with matchups against Michigan, Michigan State and Nebraska out of the Legends Division. The Buckeyes also travel to Wisconsin and Penn State.

Handicapper Teddy Covers talks NFL Regular Season Over/Under Win Totals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When I first moved to Las Vegas just prior to the start of the preseason in August 1998, NFL season win totals were just starting to pop up around town. By the early 2000’s, most sportsbooks in Vegas were posting NFL win totals by the time training camps opened in late July. Over the past five years, we’ve seen those NFL win totals get posted earlier and earlier – first early July, then June.

Here in 2012, the markets move earlier and more aggressively than ever. Some offshore sportsbooks posted win totals for the upcoming season within days of the Giants victory over the Patriots in the Super Bowl; albeit with very low limits. And here in Las Vegas, it was Christmas in May this past week when three major players – Cantor Gaming, MGM-Mirage and LVH – all released their 2012 NFL Regular Season Over/Under Win totals, with limits high enough to attract a nice chunk of wiseguy money.

Cantor was the first to market, and releasing their NFL win totals last Wednesday. As the first local shop to post numbers, with relatively high limits ($3K) that cater to sharp bettors, the action was fast and furious on the trading floor (or the betting Read more

MLB Handicapping: Colorado Rockies have bottomed out

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In the month of May alone, the Colorado Rockies are 4-15. It only adds to what has taken place with this organization since 2010's late season collapse that saw them lose 13 of 14 to close out the regular season. Since that time, Colorado has quietly been one of the worst teams in baseball with a record of 89-129, -59 units. Pitching has played a big role in the organization's decline. In early 2011, we posted a blog about how the Rockies had it right by trying to develop young arms with good fastballs that produce groundballs. Ubaldo Jimenez, Jorge De La Rosa. Juan Nicasio, Jason Hammel, and Jhoulys Chacin all showed promise. But only Nicasio is currently contributing to the team. They traded Jimenez to Cleveland – a move that for now looks smart. The Hammel for Guthrie trade hasn't worked out with Hammel throwing well for Baltimore and Guthrie (5.55 ERA) spending much of his time being injured or ineffective. Then you have De La Rosa and Chacin on the shelf due to injuries. Rookie Read more

MLB Handicapper Notes: Pitching a mess for Milwaukee Brewers

05.21.2012     11:58 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
While Cleveland and LA have been overachieving, the reigning National League Central champion Milwaukee Brewers have been awful, sitting in fifth place in arguably the weakest division in baseball.  The Brewers went 30-18 in one run games last year and had an MLB best 57-24 record at Miller Park –true home field dominance.  This year, they’re off to a sub .500 start at home while going a modest 6-6 through their first dozen one run decisions.  The betting markets weren’t high on this team coming into the campaign, lining a 96 win team from last year in the 84.5/85 range for 2012.  So far, the betting markets have been 100% correct in their negative assessment of Ron Roenike’s squad.

Milwaukee can’t blame injuries for their early season struggles.  The only significant injury they’ve suffered since opening day is shortstop Alex Gonzalez; a bottom of the order guy who’s bounced around to six different teams over the past seven seasons.   Their big bats are hitting – Ryan Braun and Cory Hart have 20 dingers between them and catcher Jonathan Lucroy enjoyed a breakout seven RBI game in his first Read more

NBA Playoff betting profiles that produce profit

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re off a pair of NBA winners Tuesday and back in action with two more NBA plays for tonight including another top-rated 20* Big Drive. This play fits a proven, profitable situation for success and we expect another top-play winner in NBA action and more of the same on Friday.

As noted in a recent blog, Round 2 home favorites have been the biggest profit producers in any round of NBA playoff action, and home favorites of 5 or more points have hit over 70% the past 30+ situations including the Spurs Game 1 win over the LA Clippers.

The LA Clippers will have a tough time bouncing back with a victory in Game 2 as the injuries and soreness surrounding the Clippers Blake Griffin (knee, ankle), Chris Paul (hip), Caron Butler (broken hand), Mo Williams (hand) and Nick Young (tooth) have them playing at less than 100% health against the Spurs.  Normally I would support the Clippers in this situation as they fit a Read more

Illinois interested in online poker

05.16.2012     02:12 PM     Printer Friendly
Reports have surfaced that the State of Illinois wants to join the online poker race. Here is a quote from Senate President John Cullerton:

“Certain forms of iGaming, especially poker, rely on large pools of potential players, and states that move swiftly to design a system that captures the widest audience of participants will have an advantage in terms of long-range success,” Cullerton wrote. “The goal is to make the state nimble enough to adjust to new Internet gambling approaches.”

Here is what Cullerton meant to say: "Everyone here is pretty much aware than our state is on the verge of a financial disaster. And that is with us taxing the crap out of everything. Why don't we get a leg up on this online poker thing Read more

NBA Playoff Betting Notes: Miami now -6.5 vs. Indiana for Game 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana at Miami -6.5 O/U 186

Some news and notes on tonight's Game 2 matchup between Indiana and Miami.

Indiana head coach Frank Vogel didn't blame the refs for Game 1's loss but he willingly took a fine to let them know the Heat do a lot of flopping.

‘(The Heat) are the biggest flopping team in the NBA,’ Vogel said to the media Thursday. ‘It’ll be very interesting to see how the referees officiate the series and how much flopping they reward. Every drive to the basket, they have guys not making a play on the ball,’ Vogel continued, ‘but sliding in front of drivers. Oftentimes they’re falling down even before contact is even being made.’”

NBA Handicapping: Winning Wagers on Round 2 Home Favorites

05.15.2012     08:07 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We cashed a pair of NBA winners last night when the 76ers (+4.5) beat Boston outright and the Thunder (-7.5) romped over the LA Lakers 119-90. Miami and Oklahoma City won and covered their opening games in Round 2, and those victories highlight a proven and profitable playoff parameter on Round 2 home favorites.

Over the past decade, Round 2 home favorites have experienced more success than any other round of the NBA playoffs. Miami won and covered all three home games as favorite last season against Boston, and NBA home favorites have covered over 58% of their games since the start of the 2003 playoffs (sample size over 170 games).

That’s a solid base situation with a large sample size. This season, Round 2 home favorites are 2-2 as the Celtics failed to cover either game, and last season those Round 2 home favorites went 11-4. But add in this line parameter and the bigger home favorites provide a stronger profitable profile. Since 2003, home favorites of -5 or more points are now 84-22 straight-up and 67-38-1 ATS (64%).  In fact, over the past 30+ games, these home favorites of -5 or more points have covered over 70% of the time! That includes 2-0 Read more
