NFL Handicapping: Chicago Bears looking forward to post-Martz era

08.02.2012     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So the Chicago Bears got rid of Mike Martz and the media is having a field day with all of the heavy petting going on between quarterback Jay Cutler and offensive coordinator Mike Tice. Check out these headlines...

Mike Tice's flexibility proves hit with Bears players‎

Tice, Cutler maintain open dialogue‎

Jay Cutler praises Mike Tice for open-mindedness‎

No Martz convinced TE Davis to return‎

Bears' flexible offense gets to work‎

In a comfort zone, Cutler poised for breakout season‎

We admit that things do look positive for Chicago’s offense heading into this season. Getting rid of Martz was probably a good move. A happy/healthy Jay Cutler is a potentially effective Jay Cutler. And Tice should be able to get more out of the Read more

College Football Betting: Maryland Terrapins Season Over/Under Wins

Maryland Terrapins
Recommendation: Over 4.5 (+110 @ 5Dimes)

Maryland enters the 2012 campaign with far less fanfare and much lower expectations. Head coach Randy Edsall cleaned house where his players are concerned in his first season and then continued by restructuring his coaching staff in the offseason. In comes a highly touted class of recruits to go along with the 16 returning starters and out goes all the problems caused by disgruntled players. Also out are both coordinators, OC Gary Crowton and DC Todd Bradford, who were fired and replaced by ex-New Mexico HC Mike Locksley and DC Brian Stewart who held the same post for the Houston Cougars the past two years. Under Locksley, the Terps will go to a spread option, up-tempo style of offense to best utilize the dual threat skills of junior QB C.J. Brown. Stewart meanwhile has installed an attacking 3-4 defensive scheme which he used at Houston and in the NFL with Dallas.

With things are a bit more settled in Edsall’s second season, the product on the field figures to be more cohesive. There’s a solid blend of talented youth and experienced depth throughout the two-deep on Read more

NCAAF Betting News: New head coach, offensive coordinator and QB at Southern Miss

07.31.2012     11:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ellis Johnson is set to begin his first year as head coach at Southern Miss. Johnson most recently served as defensive coordinator at South Carolina and before that Mississippi State. Ellis originally hired Rickey Bustle (ULL HC, Tulane QB) to serve as offensive coordinator but health issues forced Bustle to reduce his role to running backs coach. Steve Buckley will now step in as OC after spending the last five seasons as a high school head coach. According to Buckley, USM will continue to utilize an up-tempo offense. Early reports indicate as many as five quarterbacks are vying for the starting gig.

"When he left with (former head coach Curley Hallman) and went to LSU, I was grooming him to be the next offensive coordinator," former USM coach Jeff Bower said. "He's a really good football coach. He has a good mind. I thought it was just a matter of time before that would happen."

"We're going to be a no-huddle, spread formation-oriented offense Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore Ravens
Starting point:
In 2011, the Ravens finished 12-4 SU, 8-7-1 ATS (for the third consecutive year) and 10-6 to the Over. In fact, the Ravens are the only team in the NFL to make the playoffs in each of the last four years, a beacon of stability in a tumultuous league. Not only that, Baltimore has managed to win at least one playoff game in each of those four seasons, and came within a missed Billy Cundiff field goal in the AFC Championship Game of potentially reaching the Super Bowl last season.

Baltimore faced one of the easiest schedules in the league last year, facing only two playoff teams from outside their division all season. The Ravens outgained their opponents by 0.6 yards per play and finished +2 in turnovers. The Ravens also had the #1 red zone defense in the NFL last year, allowing opponents to convert for touchdowns only 38% of the time.

2012 Issues: The single biggest issue for Baltimore in 2012 is how tough their schedule is; a dramatic change compared to last year. The Ravens also have their fourth new defensive coordinator in the last four years (Dean Pees); now that Chuck Pagano is the new Read more

South Carolina newspaper pulls out all of the stops in article on sports betting

07.30.2012     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
Someone at South Carolina’s The State REALLY likes anti-sports betting clichés. Proceed with caution.

The theme of the story surrounds an accused murder (strategically pictured in cuffs at the top) that reportedly served as a local bookie. The author wants you to believe the two are in some way linked because everyone knows local bookies are extremely prone to committing capital offences.

Next, we have this quote which makes absolutely no sense (or was transcribed completely wrong).

“Even in small towns, there’s usually someone who makes sports book,” said Frank Quinn, a Columbia area psychotherapist who’s spent more than 30 years treating various addictions, including gambling, in South Carolina.

Now we have a law enforcement officer admitting that they simply have bigger fish to fry than to go after local bookies. He and some of his fellow co-workers – with over 30 years of experience – couldn't even remember making a single sports betting Read more
