College Football Betting: Alabama a 5-point favorite over LSU

10.31.2011     01:56 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LSU at Alabama -5

The media is already billing it as the Game of the Century. How about we just send Lee Corso down to Tuscaloosa and call it a great matchup instead? Either way, the winner of LSU-Alabama will likely determine at least one of the two BCS Championship participants. CRIS opened the game Alabama -6. Early money came in on the Tigers as the line dipped to -4. There has been a little buyback throughout the afternoon with the Crimson Tide currently -4.5 to -5.5 point favorites. Sportsmemo handicapper Rob Veno's Power Ratings list Alabama -4. Good conversation in the Sportsmemo Posting Forum on the projected line. We'll have more coverage on the matchup later in Read more

NCAAF Betting Alert: Totals moving down because of East Coast weather

10.28.2011     09:14 AM     Printer Friendly
Seeing some totals movement for a couple of East Coast game with dicey weather forecasts. Illinois-Penn State was bet down to 39.5. West Virginia-Rutgers down from 54 to 53. And Boston College-Maryland from 51.5 to as low as 50 (Grande). Weather reports courtesy of Sports Options. Be sure to double check tomorrow morning.

Piscataway: CLOUDY, 60% CHANCE SHOWERS. NORTHEAST WIND 12-17, GUSTY. KICKOFF TEMP 42, WIND CHILL 34

State College: CLOUDY, 70% CHANCE SNOW. NORTH WIND 11-16. KICKOFF TEMP 35, WIND CHILL 26 SNOWFALL MAY BE 2-4 INCHES; SNOW MAY MIX WITH RAIN

College Park: MOSTLY CLOUDY, 40% CHANCE RAIN EARLY. NORTHWEST WIND 12-17. KICKOFF TEMP 41, WIND CHILL 33 RAIN MAY BE MIXED WITH WET SNOW

From Rob Veno: Also include the Virginia Tech-Duke and Tulane-East Carolina games to the weather watch. Even though it won't rain during the games, it will rain right up until game time and then winds are expected to pick up – wet fields with wind and three of the four are passing teams. I was going to play both (15* ECU over) but removed them from the card.

NCAAF Betting Notes: Virginia Tech adjusts defense because of injuries

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia Tech -14.5 at Duke O/U 54

A couple of notes to consider for Saturday's Virginia Tech-Duke matchup. Tech's linebacker corps is extremely thin due to injuries and according to defensive coordinator Bud Foster, they will play a substantial amount of nickel defense. The Hokies do however get a boost with cornerback Jayron Hosley back from injury. The Blue Devils are finally healthy at running back and may have to run the ball some against the smaller VT defense in order to open up the passing game for Sean Renfree and top wideouts Connor Vernon and Donovan Varner.

In Tweedy’s place, redshirt freshman Nick Dew will play whip linebacker Saturday, but defensive coordinator Bud Foster intimated this week that the team planned to use Read more

College Football Pointspread Preview: BYU Cougars at TCU Horned Frogs

BYU at TCU (Friday, 5 pm PT – ESPN)
CRIS Opener: TCU -12 O/U 55.5
CRIS Current: TCU -13.5 O/U 56
Rob Veno Power Rating: TCU -11

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: I’m not sure I buy into the notion that BYU’s offense is growing. Sure, since the switch to quarterback Riley Nelson the Cougars have enjoyed a nice string of wins and points (41 ppg). But look at that schedule and you’ll notice it’s littered with abysmal defensive teams; San Jose State and Oregon State are tied for 83rd nationally in scoring defense while Idaho State ranks 105th in the FCS. I’d say this team hasn’t been tested in the slightest and any perceived improvement may be premature.

Granted, TCU’s defense looked as bad as any in the country in its Week 1 loss to Baylor.  Quarterback Robert Griffin torched the Horned Frogs and the track Read more

College Football Wednesday Free Pick: UConn Huskies at Pittsburgh Panthers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Connecticut at Pittsburgh
Recommendation: Over 21 first half

Going to buck the conventional wisdom that Pittsburgh running back Ray Graham will be fed a steady diet of the ball from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. Head coaches always like to fix what's broken and head coach Todd Graham's spread passing system has come to a screeching halt recently. Expect Graham, who has had extra time to prepare, to notice how poorly the Huskies have fared against similar spread passing teams Western Michigan and West Virginia. Obviously quarterback Tino Sunseri is not WMU's Alex Carder and he doesn't have the weapons WVA's Geno Smith has, but those teams did expose Connecticut's secondary (again without top CB Wreh-Wilson tonight) to the tune of 1,031 total yards and 81 points.

Pitt's offensive line has been a mess in pass protection but quick hitting patterns and enough time for a few shots over the top should be expected here. Graham is always a threat Read more

College Football Handicapping: Change in philosophy yields positive results for UTEP

10.25.2011     08:17 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Their offense may not be as lopsided as one of the Service Academies or Georgia Tech’s, but there’s been a dramatic philosophy change in El Paso, Texas. Although still operating out of a spread formation with four wideouts most of the time, UTEP has firmly committed to running the football over the past three games. Senior running back Joe Banyard began the newly found production source against Houston back on October 1st when he led the Miners with 240 yards rushing on 22 attempts (10.9 ypc) in the near upset. Following their bye week, fellow senior running backs Vernon Frazier and Leilyon Myers joined in as the trio combine for 192 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries (7.1 ypc) against Tulane. And this past Saturday, Frazier led the way with 167 yards on just seven carries (23.9 ypc), one of which was an 83-yard touchdown scamper. There are a multitude of teams across the country that find it difficult to run out of the “spread” and for UTEP to change its ways so drastically in the middle of the season and show such potent results is a credit to the players and coaching staff. Granted, the schedule has featured below average run defenses and the test Read more

College Football Betting: Kicking concerns for both UCLA and Arizona

UCLA at Arizona -4 O/U 62

Some kicking game concerns for both UCLA and Arizona.

With UCLA kicker Kip Smith still out with a hip flexor issue, the Bruins have found a new kicker in former UCLA soccer manager Tyler Gonzalez.

The Cinderella story got off to a good start with Gonzalez making both his PATs against Washington State two weekends ago, and it will continue as Gonzalez takes over kicking duties for Thursday's battle with Arizona.

John Bonano has been named the starting kicker for Arizona for this week's game, replacing the struggling Alex Zendejas – who had previously replaced Jaime Read more

Second half kick-off list

That will wrap it up for today. Good luck with tonight's plays.

(2:32 PT) Over bettors rejoice! Back-to-back kock return touchdowns in Texas-Oklahoma State game. OSU up 28-17.

(2:26 PT) Line move alert: Money coming in on Florida....now -3 at Pinnacle and Grande.

(2:24 PT) Rob Veno recommends Northern Illinois Over 33.5 2nd half.

(2:16 PT) Andrew Lange recommends Northern Illinois -0.5 2nd half.

(2:10 PT) From Teddy: First estimates of South Carolina safety...$30 million changed hands.

(2:08 PT) Two blocked FGs in final five minutes of Rutgers-Navy. Midshipmen block one with 30 seconds left as Rutgers was up 21-20. Navy cashes +3.5/+3 tickets.

(1:56 PT) Washington no punts 1st H, 5-5 on 3rd downs. Up 38-10 at half on Colorado.

(1:53 PT) Teddy Covers recommends South Florida -4.5 2nd half.

(1:37 PT) Bloodbath in Champaign: 161 yards combined, Buckeyes up 3-0. No turnovers either. Approaching halftime.

(1:35 PT) From Marty: Until this current drive, which started at the Miami-OH 2-yard line, the RedHawks had run 24 plays for zero total yards according to the radio guy.

(1:28 PT) And just like that, Georgia Tech answers with back-to-back TDs to tie it up against Virginia.

(1:12 PT) Not a good start for Northern Illinois. INT inside WMU's 10, fumbled punt, running into kicker and now holding on KO. Lucky to be down 6-0. Huskies a bit too hyped early.

(12:58 PT) Bye week prior to Georgia Tech Virginia up 14-0 early.

(12:38 PT) Zoinks. South Carolina goes intentional safety up 14-10. Final score 14-12...Mississippi State +3 and +2.5 tickets cash. Wow.

(12:33 PT) South Carolina defense comes up big. Mississippi State driving down 14-10. Gamecocks force INT. Looks like Spurrier will survive sans Garcia.

(12:29 PT) Wow. Pittsburgh fails to score a conventional touchdown in 26-14 loss to Utah. KO return and punt block only scores. 120 yards, 2.0 Read more

College Football Gambling Preview: Florida Gators at Auburn Tigers

Florida at Auburn (4 pm PT, ESPN)
CRIS Opener: Florida -1.5 O/U 50.5
CRIS Current: Florida -2 O/U 49.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: Auburn pk

Marty Otto’s Betting Take: The fact we’ve seen these two offenses scuffle the past two games shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The Gators lost their starting quarterback and were up against two of the most dominant defenses in all of college football. The Tigers were dealing with injuries to key skill position talent while on the road against two good defenses as well. But perhaps those dreadful showings serve as a positive for those looking to play the over this weekend.

What these two offenses lack in passing production right now they can potentially make up for with explosive running attacks on Saturday. Granted both defenses will likely scheme to stop the run first and foremost but will Read more
