MLB Handicapping: King Felix looks to bounceback from K-less outing

05.12.2014     02:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As discussed on today's Sportsmemo Podcast with host Andrew Lange and Rob Veno, bettors should keep an eye on Felix Hernandez’s start tonight against Tampa. Last time out against Oakland, King Felix didn't record a single strikeout in 6.1 innings of work and posted a season-low six swinging strikes after averaging 13 his first seven outings. Hernandez did lose some weight after a recent bout with the flu and admitted his stuff was pretty much non-existent. It was also his third start in a month against the platoon-heavy A's. His velocity appeared right in line with his seasonal averages but we'll be watching him closely this evening to see if there are any more red flags.

“No strikeouts,” he said. “Not a good breaking ball. Not a good changeup. That's what happens when you don't have good stuff.”

“I felt fine,” Hernandez insisted. “I just made a lot of mistakes. I was really in the middle of the plate, and they were able to hit it. No excuse. That

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Atlanta Braves at San Francisco Giants

Atlanta (Floyd) +105 at San Francisco (Lincecum) O/U 7
Recommendation: Atlanta

Strong weekend for each of these clubs as they completed series victories yesterday. For Atlanta, they disposed of the Chicago Cubs by only allowing four runs in the three-game sweep. The ramifications were more significant for San Francisco as they won three of four at Dodger Stadium and extended their NL West lead to two games over Colorado. Tonight’s starting pitching matchup presents a pair of question marks in Gavin Floyd and Tim Lincecum. In Floyd’s case the concern from a handicapping angle is whether or not his strong previous start (his first in over a year since Tommy John) and increased velocity are his true form. With Lincecum, the thought in each of his outings right now is whether he’ll have consistent command of the strike zone. Hitters have pounded the verteran 78 total bases in just 35.2 innings and he has not exceeded six innings in any of his seven starts. Lincecum did Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Los Angeles Dodgers at Washington Nationals

LA Dodgers (Greinke) -110 at Washington (Zimmermann) O/U 7
Recommendation: Los Angeles

Not a lot went right offensively for Washington in their weekend series at Philadelphia. They could only muster 11 hits (8 singles) and three runs (2 earned) in 20.1 innings against Phillies starting pitchers. It doesn’t appear things will get any easier tonight versus Zack Greinke who has posted stellar numbers across the board through six starts this season. Overall, Greinke is 5-0 with one no-decision in his 35.1 IP which includes a 2.04 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. The RH has a near 8 to 1 K:BB ratio (46 K’s, 8 BB’s) and on the road he’s 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA. Greinke controlled the Nationals last season allowing just 2 ER in 11.2 IP and Washington did not have the injury problems then that they have now. The hosts’ lineup continues to be without their top production hitters Bryce Harper and Ryan Zimmerman and they may again have to go without offensive minded catcher Wilson Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Colorado Rockies at Arizona Diamondbacks

Colorado (Morales) at Arizona (Miley) -125
Recommendation: Arizona 5-inning

Going to trust what I see with my eyes where Arizona’s Wade Miley is concerned and pencil him in for a solid start here. Miley’s stuff has not been a problem through the opening month of the season but at times his location has as evidenced by his 16 walks allowed in 36 innings. On his side is the fact that Miley is a pitcher who generally stays down in the zone and on April 6th held the Rockies to just 10 total bases in eight innings which is the best performance by any opposing starter in Coors Field this year. Overall, Miley has had the Rockies number throughout his career going 7-0 against them. As is seemingly always the case, Colorado’s offense has been dramatically different on the road thus far posting a .246 BA as opposed to .347 at home, and OBP of .298 compared to .398 and an OPS difference of .664 away/.987 home. Expect Miley to control them here and rely on his offense to give him Read more
