MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Minnesota Twins at Tampa Bay Rays

07.10.2013     09:55 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Correia) at Tampa Bay (Hellickson) O/U 8
Recommendation: Tampa Bay R/L -1.5 +110

Tampa Bay is currently MLB’s speeding locomotive and its play continues to encourage bettors to jump on. Now winners in 10 of their last 11, it’s important to note the dominance in which they’re winning games. The last nine Rays victories have all been by two or more runs and they’ve outscored their opponents by a combined 48-11. Everything is clicking together right now for Tampa Bay and that especially includes the pitching of Jeremy Hellickson who is 6-1 in his last seven starts. The often inconsistent Hellickson has been on a tear defeating the power offenses of Cleveland, Baltimore, Boston, Toronto and Detroit during this stretch. In those five games, his WHIP was 1.17 and his ERA was 1.80. Add in his dominant victory over the Chicago White Sox last Friday night, and his total line the six wins during this hot streak is: 37 IP, 44 TB allowed, 1 HR, 32K-7BB, Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Atlanta Braves at Miami Marlins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Minor) -155 at Miami (Slowey) O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

After opening the season with 10 quality starts in his first 13 outings, Atlanta’s Mike Minor is now in the midst of one of those rough patches that have plagued his young career. Minor’s recent four game stretch has totaled 24 innings, 37 hits, 58 total bases, 5.63 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. He’s had difficulty getting through innings as evidenced by the fact that he’s averaged facing 4.5 batters per inning in four of his last five starts after averaging only 3.84 in his 12 prior starts. Minor’s track record indicates he’s not a pitcher who quickly snaps out of funks which could bode well for Miami which has scored four or more runs in 10 of its last 15 games. Atlanta’s offense has supported Minor well all season scoring 5.35 runs per game while batting .282 and recording an .816 OPS. Those numbers indicate the Braves could have success against Miami’s Kevin Slowey who’s now Read more

MLB Gambling Free Play: San Francisco Giants at Cincinnati Reds

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Francisco (Kickham) at Cincinnati (Arroyo) -160 O/U 9
Recommendation: Under

Each of these teams is in an extensive offensive drought right now which should lend a helping hand to starters Michael Kickham and Bronson Arroyo. Over their last 10 games, San Francisco has gone ice cold at the plate hitting just .234 while averaging 2.3 runs per game. Cincinnati’s slump has lasted even longer as they’re now in the midst of a 17 game stretch where they’ve hit just .220 and averaged 2.8 runs per contest. Kickham made one stride in his second MLB outing last Tuesday by striking out five and walking none during his 5.2 inning stint but he was hurt by a pair of two-run homers which accounted for four of the five ER he allowed. Here against a more LH oriented Cincinnati lineup and in his third start overall, figure for a positive progression and somewhere between 5-6 solid innings from him. The Giants bullpen is rested, ready and deep enough to secure the back third Read more

MLB Gambling Free Play: Chicago Cubs at Milwaukee Brewers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Garza) at Milwaukee (Peralta) -110 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Difficult to play any game under the total at Miller Park but the circumstances here are ideal for a low scoring game. Day game after a night game on get away day is always a nice preface for an under but the starting pitchers should be the overwhelming forces here. Chicago’s Matt Garza is now in the thick of his audition for playoff contending teams as his last two starts suggest he’s well on his way back to form. His confidence level is high which is key for the often emotional RH and according to catcher Dioner Navarro, "his last couple starts, his fastball command has been off the charts, and that's the key for anybody." Versus the light hitting New York Mets and Houston, Garza has strung together 15 innings of seven hit, one run baseball in which his WHIP is 0.73 and ERA is 0.60. Just as impressive is the ease in which Garza has gotten through innings in those starts, averaging Read more

MLB Betting Free Play: New York Mets at Chicago White Sox

06.26.2013     10:14 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Marcum) at Chicago WS (Danks) -130 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Going against the statistical grain somewhat with this selection but there are enough pros to outweigh the cons in this spot. The concerns would obviously be season long offensive woes for each team and severe lack of run support for each of these pitchers. New York sports a .229/.296/.374/.670 team offense slash line which ranks 27th or worst in MLB in all four categories. The White Sox line of .243/.296/.377/.673 is only slightly better. Tonight’s starting pitchers Shawn Marcum and John Danks have had season long run support of 2.43 runs per game and 2.83 respectively. While those deficiencies are acknowledged here, have to believe that the struggles of these starters combined with the venue, hot and humid weather and the home plate umpire are enough to get the needed scoreboard production. Marcum has been miserable nearly all season and especially of late where he’s posted a 7.94 ERA and 1.59 WHIP Read more
