MLB Betting Free Play: New York Mets at Chicago White Sox

NY Mets (Marcum) at Chicago WS (Danks) -130 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

Going against the statistical grain somewhat with this selection but there are enough pros to outweigh the cons in this spot. The concerns would obviously be season long offensive woes for each team and severe lack of run support for each of these pitchers. New York sports a .229/.296/.374/.670 team offense slash line which ranks 27th or worst in MLB in all four categories. The White Sox line of .243/.296/.377/.673 is only slightly better. Tonight’s starting pitchers Shawn Marcum and John Danks have had season long run support of 2.43 runs per game and 2.83 respectively. While those deficiencies are acknowledged here, have to believe that the struggles of these starters combined with the venue, hot and humid weather and the home plate umpire are enough to get the needed scoreboard production. Marcum has been miserable nearly all season and especially of late where he’s posted a 7.94 ERA and 1.59 WHIP Read more

MLB Betting Free Pick: Milwaukee Brewers at Houston Astros

Milwaukee (Lohse) -115 at Houston (Bedard) O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Extreme turnaround by the starters in tonight’s contest gives this game a totally different look than it would’ve had if played around five weeks ago. At that time, Milwaukee’s Kyle Lohse was in the midst of a five game stretch where he did not post a quality start. Combined during that stretch, Lohse threw 27.2 innings, allowed an unbelievable 71 total bases, had a 1.81 WHIP, 6.51 ERA, and 16/9 K:BB numbers. Things have turned around for Lohse as he’s now had three straight quality outings with two of them coming against the strong offenses of Oakland and Cincinnati. The change in results has been drastic during this current run as Lohse has pitched 20 innings, allowed just 26 total bases, recorded a 2.25 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and posted 12/2 K:BB numbers. This consistent span is enhanced tonight by his recent ownership of the Astros (4-1, 1.59 ERA last two years). Houston remains a poor Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Pittsburgh Pirates at Cincinnati Reds

Pittsburgh (Liriano) at Cincinnati (Leake) -115 O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

Important series between these teams who begin the three game set separated by a half game in the NL Central. The Pirates starter Francisco Liriano has been a bettor’s dream this season as the money has flowed toward him in almost all of his starts. Today’s game appears no different as the Bucs have been bet down slightly from the opener and perhaps with good reason. Not only has Liriano had overwhelming stuff led by his top notch slider, but he dominated this Reds lineup just 16 days ago. In that June 1 outing, the Pittsburgh LH went six full, allowed just 4 hits and one run while posting an 11:1 K-BB ratio. He walked away on the wrong end of a 2-0 final in that game because Reds RH Mike Leake was dominant as well throwing six shutout innings. Leake yielded seven hits (all singles) and gained redemption for an earlier loss to Pittsburgh where he was lit up for 10 hits and five runs. The RH has Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: New York Yankees at Oakland A's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Yankees (Hughes) +112 at Oakland (Straily) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: New York

Everyone who’s involved in the daily MLB handicapping grind knows how wildly inconsistent Phil Hughes’ starts can be. His stuff has always been very good and in my opinion when he has a bad outing it’s because of poor location inside the strike zone. Tonight there are overwhelming situational numbers that suggest he’ll be successful so I’ll go to the well and back him for a second straight start. In his most recent performance, Hughes came through with seven innings of three hit ball and a win at Seattle. The road has been kind to the RH lately as his last three away appearances have resulted in quality starts. In those games, Hughes threw 19 innings allowing 12 hits and three earned runs for a 1.35 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, .169 BAA. He’s had tremendous success in this park as evidenced by his 1.69 ERA and 0.69 WHIP and in 84 plate appearances against him, this A’s roster Read more

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oakland (Straily) -130 at Chicago WS (Quintana) O/U 8
Recommendation: Oakland

Oakland enters Chicago red hot having gone 16-3 over their last 19 games. They’ve won six consecutive series including their just completed two of three at Milwaukee where they outscored the Brewers 19-7. Everything is clicking right now for the A’s as evidenced by their +44 run differential (91-47) during this stretch. The offense has an outstanding .383 OBP, the starters own a 2.44 ERA and 1.01 WHIP while the bullpen has recorded 3 wins, 8 saves, 10 holds, 2.40 era and 1.11 WHIP. Oakland catches a break in this series opener since the White Sox were involved in a 5 hour 42 minute, 16 inning affair in Seattle yesterday. Aside from the extra innings and the long flight, Chicago’s bullpen is almost completely blown out for this contest. Chi Sox starter Jose Quintana has averaged a shade over 5.2 innings per outing this season and has completed seven full just once in his eleven starts. Last Read more
