NFL Gambling Preview: Cincinnati Bengals at Detroit Lions

10.20.2013     07:36 AM     ER Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by ER Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati at Detroit
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Detroit -2.5 O/U 46
CRIS Current: Detroit -1.5 O/U 46
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Detroit -1
Erin Rynning's Recommendation: Detroit

The Detroit Lions (4-2) have shown a sense of hunger and maturity not seen in recent editions.  Keyed by the development of quarterback Matthew Stafford the Lions will play four of their next six games at home – all the while hoping to avoid the letdown of previous seasons.  Stafford is completing 63% of his passes, while importantly is showing a 12/4 TD/INT ratio.  All-everything wide receiver Calvin Johnson figures to be much closer to 100% health this week after playing largely as a decoy last week against the Browns.  The Lions feature other weapons as well with Reggie Bush changing opponents’ defensive game plan.  Of course, both Johnson and Bush open the field for others including rookie Read more

NFL Handicapping: Second half betting trends for Week 7

Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This week’s blog is a bit different than the previous weekly writings. I decided to go more specific this week and focused in on five Sunday NFL games that have some strong early season first half and second half betting trends. Let’s see if these continue to be money makers this weekend:

Tampa Bay @ Atlanta
Tampa Bay is 1-4 ATS and 0-5 O/U in second half play this year. The Buccaneers have only had one 2H total score more than 13 points. Tampa has scored one field goal in their last three second halves combined. They lost the 2H 6-0 three weeks ago at New England, 13-0 two weeks ago at home vs. Arizona and 17-3 last week at home against Philadelphia.

Atlanta is 1-4 ATS and 4-1 O/U in the 2H this season. All four pointspread losses are either as pick ‘em or an underdog, their lone cover was as a favorite. In the Falcons last four games, the 2H totals have resulted in 27 or more points.

Baltimore @ Pittsburgh
Baltimore has been a tremendous second half team rattling off five consecutive straight up and ATS wins. Until last week’s 17-13 2H win and cover against Green Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Syracuse Orange at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Syracuse at Georgia Tech
Saturday, 9:30 am PT - ESPN Game Plan
CRIS Opener:
Georgia Tech -7 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Georgia Tech -7 (-120) O/U 54.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Georgia Tech -11.5
Andrew Lange's Recommendation: Georgia Tech

Pretty good situational play here on the home side as Georgia Tech, off three straight losses, returns home to face ACC newbie Syracuse. The Yellow Jackets ran into a tough stretch of games with Virginia Tech (6-1) and Miami (6-0) followed by a brutal travel spot at BYU. Note that those three teams all reside in the top 26 nationally in total defense and were well versed in what to expect from Tech's offense (BYU played in Atlanta last season). And despite how unique and difficult it is to prepare for Georgia Tech's offense, strong, well-coached defenses have proved able to contain it. I'm not sure we get that with Syracuse who allowed 48 against Northwestern and Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Rob Veno has been creating his own Power Ratings for nearly two decades. His numbers are very well respected and an excellent tool for discovering value. Rob’s PRs are a baseline and do not include key injuries or situations but they also don't overreact as much as the betting markets do week to week. Below is a chart of CRIS's current lines and Rob's College Football Power Ratings for Week 8.

College Football Betting Preview: LSU Tigers at Ole Miss Rebels

LSU at Mississippi
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
LSU -9.5 O/U 60
CRIS Current: LSU -10 O/U 60
Rob Veno's Power Rating: LSU -5
Brent Crow's Recommendation: LSU

Last week saw Ole Miss play Texas A&M in one of the best games of the year in the SEC, with the Aggies coming out on top, 41-38. Ole Miss performed admirably in taking the Aggies down to the final horn, but they ran out of manpower in the end, especially on defense. While I watched the game, I noted that the Rebels were losing players left and right on defense, and that plus the physicality of the game would make it tough on them this week. Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze has confirmed what I saw this week in several interviews.

"In the fourth quarter, we had only one personnel grouping that we could get on the field and kind of lost all the things we had planned in our spy techniques - we just didn't have any of Read more

College Football Betting Preview: USC Trojans at Notre Dame Fighting Irish

USC at Notre Dame
Saturday, 4:30 pm PT - NBC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame pk O/U 52
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -3 O/U 51
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Notre Dame -4.5
Brian Edwards' Recommendation: Notre Dame

The stakes are usually much higher when Notre Dame and USC collide on the gridiron. When these bitter rivals met last season, the Trojans had a chance to deny the Fighting Irish a trip to the BCS Championship Game.

This time around, however, we have a pair of unranked teams with two losses apiece.

Nevertheless, games all pay the same when it comes to sports wagering. As of late Thursday morning, most books had Notre Dame (4-2 SU, 1-4-1 ATS) favored by three with a total of 50.5.

Gamblers can back the Trojans to win outright for a +130 return (risk $100 to win $130). For first-half bets, Notre Dame is a one-point chalk with a total of 25.

College Football Betting Preview: Florida State Seminoles at Clemson Tigers

Florida State at Clemson
Saturday, 5 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Florida State -3 O/U 63
CRIS Current: Florida State -3 O/U 63.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Florida State -1
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Clemson

Stakes are high here as ACC Atlantic Division and berth in the ACC Championship Game are both probably on the line. As mentioned in the Sportsmemo blog section earlier this week, Clemson has been a money making machine going 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings. There is a measure of atonement seeking by the Tigers in this one after their total second half collapse last season. Holding a 28-14 lead, Clemson allowed FSU touchdowns on five consecutive drives which resulted in a 35-3 spurt that decided the game. Clemson junior DE Vic Beasely stated "Last year they got us, but I feel like we should have won. We're looking for payback". There’s no doubt that loss sits badly with them so Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Dallas at Philadelphia
Sunday, 10 am PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Philadelphia ok O/U 56
CRIS Current: Philadelphia -3 (ev) O/U 54.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Philadelphia -1
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Over

This NFC East matchup has the potential for both offenses to shine. Philadelphia’s up-tempo attack under Chip Kelly has looked very good in back-to-back games with Nick Foles at the controls instead of the injured Michael Vick. Foles has been sharp (38-of-56, 68%, 5-0 TD-INT) in leading the offense to 36 and 31 points in the last two games. I liked that Philadelphia was able to successfully establish the run last week with LeSean McCoy carrying the rock for 116 yards rushing. That success running the football could continue this week because Dallas is severely banged up along the defensive line. The Cowboys are going to be without Pro Bowl DE DeMarcus Ware who was injured with a quad strain last week against Read more

Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -6.5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: UCLA

The PAC-12 is positively loaded this year, #2 in the country behind only the mighty SEC in conference strength according to my numbers.  Saturday’s Stanford vs. UCLA showdown gives us a clear example of how good this conference really is!  Remember, neither squad was the preseason favorite to win their respective divisions (USC and Oregon), and the trio of Oregon State, Washington and Arizona State are all capable of beating anyone in the league on any given Saturday.   So while Stanford and UCLA provide a battle of Top 15 teams for ABC on Saturday, even the winner of this matchup is not going to have an easy task of holding on to that lofty rankings throughout the course of the Read more
