Atlanta -120 at Philadelphia O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Atlanta

Strong weekend for each of these clubs as they completed series sweeps at home yesterday. For Atlanta, the ramifications were significant since they decisively swept their main divisional competitor Washington by a cumulative score of 23-11. Atlanta’s offense ripped through the Nationals pitching posting a .306 BA, .398 OBP, and 1.000 OPS. Justin Upton has been red hot lately and Freedie Freeman is third in MLB with a .442 BA. Tonight they’ll face Philadelphia’s Roberto Hernandez whose propensity to cause hitters to swing and miss (had 20 in his last start vs. Milwaukee) could cause problems for Atlanta’s free swinging lineup. In the other dugout, the Phillies defeated Miami’s studs Jose Fernandez and Nate Eovaldi on Friday and Saturday before pounding out 12 hits vs. Henderson Alvarez yesterday. In all, the Marlins starters lasted a combined 16.1 IP while allowing 27 hits, 7 walks and 13 Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Texas Rangers at Boston Red Sox

Texas (Scheppers) at Boston (Lackey) -160 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

Texas was run through the gauntlet known as the Tampa Bay starting staff over the weekend and the offensive numbers were ugly. In total, the Rangers managed eight runs in the three game set while posting a .220 BA, .260 OBP, .270 SLG%, 9 TB per game and a 19-4 K-BB margin. That miserable set of series stats came on the heels of the Philadelphia series where Texas hit .311, had game OBP’s of .450, .469, .353, OPS’s of .950, .875, .706, averaged 15 TB per game and had a near neutral 15-12 K-BB margin. The truth of the Texas offense lies toward the higher side of those series contrasts and expect them to display that tonight versus Red Sox starter John Lackey who they’ve owned over his career. Against Texas, the Boston RH has struggled going 12-15 with a 6.01 ERA which is his worst against any team he’s faced more than once. The potent Texas lineup features newcomers Shin Soo Choo and Prince Fielder who Read more

MLB Handicapping: Milwaukee Brewers Season Over/Under Wins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee Brewers Season O/U Wins: 79.5
Recommendation: Over

I see positive value in this season win total with a Milwaukee team that had plenty of key things go wrong for them  2013. The major setback for the Brewers last season was obviously the loss of their centerpiece Ryan Braun for 101 games due to suspension. Add in the 70 games missed by cleanup hitter Aramis Ramirez and you have a gaping hole in the batting order that was supposed to be the Brewers strength. Veteran starting second baseman Rickie Weeks completely fell off the face of the earth recording career worsts in every offensive category. An injury to starting pitcher Marco Estrada cost Milwaukee about 12 starts and weakened an already average rotation. Milwaukee’s bullpen blew seven saves and lost eight games in their first 37 contests before they steadied the ship.

Despite all of the things that went wrong for them, Milwaukee still won 74 games and managed to find some bright spots for the future. Shortstop Jean Segura took hold in the top third of the Milwaukee order immediately and heads into 2014 as one of the top offensive shortstops in the National League. Read more

MLB Handicapping: Atlanta Braves Season Over/Under Wins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta Braves Season O/U Wins: 87.5
Recommendation: Under

The Braves enter the season with a slew of key injuries to their pitching staff and a couple figures to affect them all season long. Right handed starters Brandon Beachy and Kris Medlen who were both expected to be in the top three of the Atlanta rotation underwent Tommy John surgery this month and are lost for the year. Add to that, the loss for at least a month of LH starter Mike Minor who has been placed on the 15-day DL (shoulder soreness) and the early season absence of free agent acquisition Gavin Floyd (recovering from Tommy John surgery) and you have a decimated starting staff until at least mid-May. Atlanta will be dependent upon 23-year old Julio Teheran (last year’s no. 5 at the start of the season) and veteran Ervin Santana at the top of the rotation and then they’ll need another 23-year old, Alex Wood, along with journeyman Aaron Harang and inexperienced righty David Hale to anchor the 3-4-5 slots.

The injury bug doesn’t stop with the starters as lefty reliever Johnny Venters and RH middle reliever Cory Gearrin each have arm injuries that will keep Read more
