Summit League Championship Betting Preview: IPFW Mastodons vs. North Dakota State Bison

03.11.2014     08:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Summit League Championship
IPFW vs. North Dakota State
6 pm PT, Sioux Falls, ND
CRIS Opener:
North Dakota State -8 O/U 142.5
CRIS Current: North Dakota State -8 O/U 142
Rob Veno Power Rating: North Dakota State -7.5

Quick Take: Fort Wayne was the no. 2 seed but needed two wins to reach the championship. They had a day off in between games and didn't put forth much effort in their 85-47 first round victory over IUPUI. NDSU was the top seed and has played only one game since March 1. They cruised past Denver, 83-48, in the semifinals. Despite ranking seventh in the league in defensive efficiency (1.08 points per possession allowed), IPFW has held four of its last five foes to under 1.00 ppp. The Bison ranked no. 1 in both offensive (1.15) and defensive (0.99) efficiency. The two teams split during the regular season with the home side prevailing in both contests.

BYU vs. Gonzaga
6 pm PT, Las Vegas, Nev.
CRIS Opener:
Gonzaga -3.5 O/U 4
CRIS Current: Gonzaga -4 O/U 148
Rob Veno Power Rating: Gonzaga -3

Quick Take: BYU scored only six points the final 10 minutes of regulation against San Francisco but went on the win in overtime. Gonzaga dominated Saint Mary's, 70-54. The Zags have been to 16 straight WCC title games (11-5 SU). The home side won both meetings during the regular season. Interesting that BYU dominated the glass in both contests with a combined 74-57 edge including 27 offensive rebounds. This despite  the Zags allowing the lowest offensive rebounding rate in the  WCC.

Quotes: Gonzaga head coach Mark Few on establishing dominance in the paint...

UW-Milwaukee vs. Wright State
4 pm PT, Dayton, Ohio
CRIS Opener:
Wright State -6 O/U 129
CRIS Current: Wright State -6 O/U 129
Rob Veno Power Rating: Wright State -8

Quick Take: A last second shift in venue as top seed and host UW-Green Bay fell to UW-Milwaukee on Saturday. The finals now move to the top remaining seed, Wright State. Milwaukee finished only 7-9 in conference play and ranked near the bottom in both offensive (0.98 points per possession) and defensive (1.06 ppp allowed) efficiency. The Raiders have won six straight and finished with the top defense in the Horizon (0.95). The two teams split during the regular season with the home side winning both meetings. In a conference where littered with strong home courts Milwaukee has proven capable on the road with wins at Oakland, UIC, Detroit, and Green Bay twice.

So-Con Tournament Championship Betting Preview: Western Carolina Catamounts vs. Wofford Terriers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Southern Conference Tournament Championship
Western Carolina vs. Wofford
6 pm PT, Asheville, NC
CRIS Opener:
Wofford -3 O/U 131
CRIS Current: Wofford -3 O/U 131
Rob Veno Power Rating: Wofford -4

Quick Take: Wofford was at one point 7-10 overall and 2-3 in So-Con play but finished 11-5 and earned the no. 3 seed. The Terriers ranked second in both offensive (1.10 points per possession) and defensive (1.00 ppp allowed) efficiency. Western Carolina was the fifth seed and beat both Elon and Davidson by 2. Wofford won the only regular season meeting, 71-60 at home. Turnovers could be the key to the game. Wofford has the lowest offensive TO rate in the league whereas WCU has the best defensive TO rate. During the regular season matchup, Wofford won the turnover battle 11-14. As a conference, the quality of play of the So-Con has diminished each of the past four seasons. According to Ken Pomery’s rankings, the league ranked 19th out of 33 in 2011, 24th in 2012, 28th in 2013, and 30th this season.

4 pm PT, Baltimore, MD
CRIS Opener:
Delaware -4.5 O/U 152
CRIS Current: Delaware -4.5 O/U 153
Rob Veno Power Rating: Delaware -3

Quick Take: Both squads met twice during the regular season with Delaware winning both games, 89-72 and 76-71. Statistically, William & Mary ranks no. 1 in the CAA in offensive efficiency (1.14 points per possession) but dead last in defensive efficiency (1.12 ppp allowed). Delaware ranks third in both categories. The Blue Hens are also the fastest team in the league at nearly 70 possessions per game.

Quotes: Tribe head coach Tony Shaver on Delaware...

MAAC Tournament Championship
Manhattan vs. Iona
4 pm PT, Springfield, Mass.
CRIS Opener:
Manhattan pk O/U 157
CRIS Current: Manhattan -1.5 O/U 157
Rob Veno Power Rating: Iona -1.5

Quick Take: A rematch of last year's title game that saw Iona prevail, 60-57. Offense vs. defense is the main theme; the Gaels rank tops in the conference in virtually every offensive category including efficiency (1.19 points per possession). Meanwhile the same can be said for the Jaspers defensively. They allowed only 0.95 ppp while the Gaels surrendered 1.06. Iona won the first meeting at home 85-73 after trailing by six in the second half. Manhattan returned the favor with an 80-77 OT win on its home floor.
