Betting Preview: Maryland vs. East Carolina - Military Bowl

Military Bowl @ Washington, D.C.
East Carolina vs. Maryland -7.5 O/U 68.5
December 29, 11:30 am PT - ESPN

Overview: Maryland is reportedly discouraged after getting passed over by other ACC teams and shipped to a cold weather bowl.  Basically, the Terps felt they were deserving of a Champs Sports Bowl berth which ended up going to NC State. Finishing 8-4 and playing a C-USA team in late December on the east coast is not exactly a reward. But maybe it was a fitting end to what was somewhat of a fraudulent season. Maryland opponents finished with more rushing and passing yards and if you eliminate games against woeful Morgan State and Wake Forest, the Terps were outgained by over 700 yards against the rest of their opponents. That being said, with East Carolina’s inability to stop anyone, Maryland has a mammoth edge on defense.

Rob Veno’s Take: (Power Rating: Maryland -9.5) Great storylines for each of these Read more

Insight Bowl Betting Preview: Missouri Tigers vs. Iowa Hawkeyes

Insight Bowl @ Tempe, Ariz.
Missouri -1 vs. Iowa O/U 47.5
December 28, 7 pm PT – ESPN

Overview: Missouri’s resume looks pretty good with wins over Illinois, San Diego State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. And the Tigers’ two road losses against Nebraska and Texas Tech are certainly excusable. The defensive numbers are a little skewed due to dominating performances against lesser competition but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say the gap between MU and Iowa’s defense isn’t that much despite their pedigrees. The Hawkeyes lost a lot of close games (four by four points or less) and were undoubtedly unlucky at times but the season-ending loss to Minnesota may have raised some red flags that the team gave up on what was a promising season. Kirk Ferentz is a master motivator but even he has to be bummed about the way things turned out. At least the Hawkeyes drew an upper-tier opponent which should grab their Read more

Independence Bowl Betting Preview: Georgia Tech vs. Air Force

Independence Bowl @ Shreveport, La.
Georgia Tech vs. Air Force -3 O/U 56
December 27, 2 pm PT – ESPN2

Overview: When facing above average offenses, Georgia Tech had major issues keeping opponents out of the end zone. And to make matters worse, the offense sputtered down the stretch (21.6 ppg last five). Simply put, the Yellow Jackets were down this season hence just one win (North Carolina) over a team currently above .500. Air Force was once again fairly formulaic; beat teams it was supposed to beat while falling short when asked to step up in class. Considering the familiarity on offense between both teams, this matchup is all about motivation.

Rob Veno’s Take: (Power Rating: Air Force -0.5) Battle of the option offenses. Over 80 percent of both teams’ offensive plays were of the run variety this season. There is a slight chance Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt could play in this game Read more

Poinsettia Bowl Betting Preview: Navy vs. San Diego State

Poinsettia Bowl @ San Diego, Calif.
Navy at San Diego State
December 23, 5 pm PT - ESPN

Overview: No line on this one as Navy plays its annual late season contest against Army this weekend. It was business as usual for the Midshipmen this season with a couple of solid wins followed by a couple of disappointing losses. Navy went 3-2 (Army still pending) against teams that are headed to the postseason. Offensively, the run game was solid and they managed to showcase a halfway formidable passing game (11.5 ypg) with quarterback Ricky Dobbs. Nothing spectacular but it provides bettors with a little more confidence should the Midshipmen trail by margin at any point. San Diego State got the breakout season it was expecting under second-year head coach Brady Hoke. The Aztecs showed well when asked to step up in class (close losses to TCU, Utah, and Missouri). They also beat Air Force which gives them a leg up in preparing for Navy’s option attack. Read more

Las Vegas Bowl Betting Preview: Utah Utes vs. Boise State Broncos

Las Vegas Bowl
Utah vs. Boise State -16.5 O/U 61.5
December 22, 5 pm PT - ESPN

Overview: Utah looked poised to contend in the Mountain West after an 8-0 start but was exposed as fraudulent after a blowout loss to TCU followed by a poor showing at Notre Dame. The Utes rallied however with a sound win at San Diego State and a one-point triumph over rival BYU in the season finale. The stats are all there, but the pointspread shows the betting public doesn’t have a lot of faith in this team against top competition. Boise State is obviously disappointed to not be playing in a BCS bowl but the loss to Nevada shouldn’t diminish this team’s capabilities. We are still talking about a legitimate top 10 outfit but this one comes down to whether or not they can Read more

Monday Night Football Betting Preview: New York at New England

NY Jets at New England -4 O/U 44.5

A Monday night divisional match-up always and one of the biggest games of the season as the New England Patriots (9-2) host the New York Jets (9-2). The winner will have the best record in the AFC and the inside track to gain home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Here are five players to watch in tonight’s key contest.

The Patriots have taken some betting money and up to a 4-point favorite in many places, and Fairway’s football forecast projects the Jets as the team of interest tonight. The Jets beat the Patriots in Week 2 at the Meadowlands 28-14 as a 3-point home underdog. New York used a balanced offensive attack and consistent ground game to run for 136 yards with both LaDainian Tomlinson and Shonn Green sharing the rushing duties. Expect a similar approach Monday night but note that quarterback Marc Sanchez has thrown for at least 250 Read more

New Mexico Bowl Betting Preview: BYU Cougars vs. UTEP Miners

New Mexico Bowl @ Albuquerque, N.M.
BYU vs. UTEP
December 18, 11 am PT – ESPN

Overview:
Expected to contend in C-USA, UTEP (6-6) limped to the finish, winning just one of its last six games. The main problem was the health and play of quarterback Trevor Vittatoe. Vittatoe threw 14 touchdowns and only two interceptions in UTEP’s six wins but five TDs and eight INTs in their six losses. For the first time in a long time BYU was forced to rebuild. The Cougars were hurt by graduation losses and instability at the quarterback position. They started 2-5 but got a favorable schedule down the stretch that propelled them to four straight wins. BYU snapped a five-year string of Las Vegas Bowl appearances. UTEP makes its first postseason showing since 2005. Rob Veno’s Take: (Power Rating: BYU -10.5) The Cougars figure to be a rare early bowl sizeable favorite that actually cares. The Read more

The Best in Sports Betting: Weekly Recap

12.03.2010     02:03 PM     Printer Friendly
Another week in the books at Sportsmemo as we near the end of the college football regular season. Conference championships get underway tonight with Miami-Ohio taking on Northern Illinois. For Saturday, C-USA, SEC, Big XII and ACC title winners will all be decided. Also in action is the Big East which means someone – maybe UConn? – is headed to the BCS. Looking for a two-team moneyline parlay? A $100 bet on Utah State (+7500) and UNLV (+6000) would net you $463,500. What do Boise State and Hawaii have to play for anyway?

The current state of college basketball totals market isn’t perfect with CRIS still reluctant to line every game on the board, but that hasn’t stopped Helmut from producing winners. Helmut is off to 15-3 83% mark with his totals which is scary considering he’s had less than 25% of the card to work with. When the market finally opens up, thing should get even better for Helmut and his clients. Read more

Betting the Civil War: Oregon Ducks at Oregon State Beavers

Oregon at Oregon State +16.5 O/U 64
Recommendation: Oregon State
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT – ABC

There aren't a lot of statistics that show Oregon State as having an edge over Oregon. It isn't that the Beavers are a bad football team; they just simply cannot match the Ducks when it comes to offensive and even defensive productivity. That doesn't mean however that the Beavers aren't capable in a one-game scenario of closing the gap. And I think that is the key question in this handicap; does Oregon State have the attributes to compete and even win against the mighty Ducks? The answer of course is yes as we saw Oregon State competitive against the likes of TCU and Boise State earlier in the year.

What the Beavers didn't do – and what is fresh in bettors’ minds – was show up for last week's game against Stanford. The Cardinal, needing to maintain its BCS status, rolled to a 38-0 shutout. Two weeks prior to that, it was the embarrassing home loss to Washington State. Most Read more

ACC Championship Betting Preview: Florida State vs. Virginia Tech

Florida State vs. Virginia Tech -3.5 O/U 52
Saturday, 4:45 pm PT - ESPN

The ACC was pretty embarrassed about the lack of fan support for its championship game last year. Nearly 30,000 tickets went unsold and you could hear a pin drop in the background. They picked up and moved the title game to Charlotte this year and as a result are expected to have nearly 70,000 people on hand. Most of the fan support is reportedly coming from Blacksburg which is just a couple hours away by car.

The matchup between Florida State and Virginia Tech represents a rematch from the first ever ACC title game back in 2005. For the Hokies this will be the fourth time in six years they have played for the title, having won the last two. For the Seminoles it marks the first time they’ve been to the title game since 2005 when they knocked off Virginia Tech as 14.5-point underdogs.

With the two division championship game format just coming to fruition five years ago there isn’t a big enough sample Read more
