Maryland is reportedly discouraged after getting passed over by other ACC teams and shipped to a cold weather bowl. Basically, the Terps felt they were deserving of a Champs Sports Bowl berth which ended up going to NC State. Finishing 8-4 and playing a C-USA team in late December on the east coast is not exactly a reward. But maybe it was a fitting end to what was somewhat of a fraudulent season. Maryland opponents finished with more rushing and passing yards and if you eliminate games against woeful Morgan State and Wake Forest, the Terps were outgained by over 700 yards against the rest of their opponents. That being said, with East Carolina’s inability to stop anyone, Maryland has a mammoth edge on defense.

Overview:
Missouri’s resume looks pretty good with wins over Illinois, San Diego State, Oklahoma and Texas A&M. And the Tigers’ two road losses against Nebraska and Texas Tech are certainly excusable. The defensive numbers are a little skewed due to dominating performances against lesser competition but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say the gap between MU and Iowa’s defense isn’t that much despite their pedigrees. The Hawkeyes lost a lot of close games (four by four points or less) and were undoubtedly unlucky at times but the season-ending loss to Minnesota may have raised some red flags that the team gave up on what was a promising season. Overview:
When facing above average offenses, Georgia Tech had major issues keeping opponents out of the end zone. And to make matters worse, the offense sputtered down the stretch (21.6 ppg last five). Simply put, the Yellow Jackets were down this season hence just one win (North Carolina) over a team currently above .500. Air Force was once again fairly formulaic; beat teams it was supposed to beat while falling short when asked to step up in class. Considering the familiarity on offense between both teams, this matchup is all about motivation.

Overview:
No line on this one as Navy plays its annual late season contest against Army this weekend. It was business as usual for the Midshipmen this season with a couple of solid wins followed by a couple of disappointing losses. Navy went 3-2 (Army still pending) against teams that are headed to the postseason. Offensively, the run game was solid and they managed to showcase a halfway formidable passing game (11.5 ypg) with quarterback Ricky Dobbs. Nothing spectacular but it provides bettors with a little more confidence should the Midshipmen trail by margin at any point. San Diego State got the breakout season it was expecting under second-year head coach Brady Hoke. The Aztecs showed well when asked to step up in class (close losses to TCU, Utah, and Missouri). They also beat Air Force which gives them a leg up in preparing for Navy’s option attack.

Expected to contend in C-USA, UTEP (6-6) limped to the finish, winning just one of its last six games. The main problem was the health and play of quarterback Trevor Vittatoe. Vittatoe threw 14 touchdowns and only two interceptions in UTEP’s six wins but five TDs and eight INTs in their six losses. For the first time in a long time BYU was forced to rebuild. The Cougars were hurt by graduation losses and instability at the quarterback position. They started 2-5 but got a favorable schedule down the stretch that propelled them to four straight wins. BYU snapped a five-year string of Las Vegas Bowl appearances. UTEP makes its first postseason showing since 2005.

The ACC was pretty embarrassed about the lack of fan support for its championship game last year. Nearly 30,000 tickets went unsold and you could hear a pin drop in the background. They picked up and moved the title game to Charlotte this year and as a result are expected to have nearly 70,000 people on hand. Most of the fan support is reportedly coming from Blacksburg which is just a couple hours away by car.
The matchup between Florida State and Virginia Tech represents a rematch from the first ever ACC title game back in 2005. For the Hokies this will be the fourth time in six years they have played for the title, having won the last two. For the Seminoles it marks the first time they’ve been to the title game since 2005 when they knocked off Virginia Tech as 14.5-point underdogs.
