College Basketball Betting Free Play: Villanova Wildcats at Creighton Bluejays

Villanova at Creighton -2.5 O/U 147
Recommendation: Creighton

Creighton has failed to cover the number in four consecutive games because it has been overpriced. However, in today's home game vs. Villanova, the price is right for a play on the Bluejays, who are 2.5-point home favorites vs. the Wildcats. Greg McDermott's team is undefeated in 13 home games this season with a 7-4 spread record. Creighton has been a single-digit home 'chalk' three times, posting a 2-1 ATS mark. When these teams met in Philadelphia on Jan. 20, it was all Creighton from the jump. The Bluejays put on a show, setting school and Big East records by draining 21-of-35 attempts from 3-point range. They led by 40 – that's right, 40! – with more than six minutes remaining. Ethan Wragge scored a career-high 27 points thanks to nine treys on 14 attempts. With eight 3-balls in the first 16 minutes and change, Wragge surpassed his previous career high of 22 points before halftime. Doug McDermott was steady as usual, producing 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field. Austin Chatman dished out 10 assists, while Jahenns Manigat finished with 19 points. Now obviously, I'm Read more

Ohio State -4.5 at Illinois O/U 124
Recommendation: Ohio State

Both of these Big Ten schools have had their share of problems this season. Ohio State was ranked in the top 10 before dropping five of six games in conference play. The Buckeyes managed to turns things around some by winning four of five before losing at home to Michigan last time out. Overall, OSU (6-6 Big Ten) does have nice road wins at Wisconsin and Iowa as well as home wins over Illinois and Purdue and are currently 6-6 in conference play.  Ohio State is +0.06 PPP in conference play; one of only five Big Ten teams with a positive efficiency rate. On the other hand, Illinois is just 3-9 in conference play and is -0.09 PPP. They have a home win over Indiana and two wins over Penn State but suffered an eight game losing streak in between wins over the Nittany Lions. They Illini are coming off another loss, 67-58, at Nebraska and have been plagued by an inability to generate offense. Read more

Michigan State senior center Adreian Payne is back and he's 100 percent healthy (and lethal) after missing seven games. Payne led the Spartans to Thursday's 85-70 home win over Northwestern by scoring 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Payne scored 24 points in last Sunday's loss at Wisconsin. Tom Izzo is happy to have Payne back, but he's now without starting guard Keith Appling, who has a wrist injury that has forced him to miss the first three games of his career. Appling averages 15.0 points and 4.9 assists per game. He continues to get treatment but is probably at least a week away from returning. Branden Dawson remains out (hand) and won't be back for at least two more weeks.

Kansas freshman center Joel Embiid is listed as 'questionable' for Saturday's home game vs. TCU, but I'll be very surprised if he plays. Bill Self clearly indicated after Monday's loss at Kansas St. that Embiid needed some rest before the stretch drive. Embiid has been bothered by a sprained knee and an ailing back, and his presence certainly isn't required against the Horned Frogs. Embiid averages 10.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game. Also, the status of Jamari Taylor is Read more

Canisius -4.5 at Niagara O/U 158
Recommendation: Canisius

We cashed in with a MAAC road favorite last night in Manhattan’s 86-69 blowout win over Rider and I think we have another rock solid opportunity tonight backing another road favorite with Canisius. Despite being one of the worst teams in the MAAC, Niagara has stepped up with two of its better efforts in their last two home games against conference powers Iona and Manhattan. Niagara lost those two games by a single point. Those were bitter defeats for the Purple Eagles who had opportunities but failed to get that key basket or defensive stop down the stretch to turn. This could be a tough situation for a full effort while the Golden Griffins are likely to be in a focused and intense mood after dropping two straight to Iona and Manhattan.

Canisius defeated Niagara in the previous meeting earlier this season 87-74. Niagara had no answers defensively for Billy Baron who piled up 31 points on 10-for-17 shooting. Niagara’s only real offensive threat, Antoine Mason, got his points in the previous meeting but the Griffins did a good job of keeping everyone else under wraps. Chris Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Arizona State tries to break through vs. rival Arizona

Arizona -5.5 at Arizona State

Tonight in Tempe Arizona State will look to avenge an early season 91-68 blowout loss to rival Arizona. Both teams will have a slightly different look this time around with ASU's Jermaine Marshall back in the lineup and UA's Brandon Ashley out with an injury. The Wildcats have won 6 of the last 7 in the series (5-2 ATS).

“Any time you’re missing a key player, it’s hard to judge that team,” UA coach Sean Miller said of Marshall, who’s been at full strength for a couple of weeks. “When he’s come back and become healthy, to me, they’ve almost regained the form they had prior to our game when they were playing excellent basketball.”

“We’ve played them now three times since I’ve been here and I haven’t won one, so it’s about time I get one,” ASU sophomore point guard Jahii Carson said.

Northwestern at Michigan State -14 O/U 119.5
Recommendation: Under

Thanks to a big push towards the over I see no reason not to play Northwestern under the total...again. In listening to Chris Collins, it is clear the Wildcats have zero depth and as a result must slow down the pace of the game and focus nearly all of their attention on playing defense and keeping the game close. Offensively, Northwestern has topped a point per possession once in Big Ten play whereas they've failed to top 0.90 in 8 out of 11 games. On the road against arguably the best defense in the league, it'll be a struggle to top 50 points. Michigan State meanwhile has had its issues offensively due to injuries. Tom Izzo noted that the team's desire to push the pace has been hampered because of not being able to play with the ideal personnel. The first meeting featured 94 points and 54 possessions. Even with drastic improvement on a number of fronts, topping 120 will be Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Wisconsin eager to put defensive clamps on Minnesota

Minnesota at Wisconsin 8.5 O/U 134

Wisconsin is looking for a little bit of defensive revenge tonight after allowing 81 (1.39 ppp) to Minnesota in Minneapolis. UW's defense has tightened up considerably of late, holding its last five opponents to 58, 65, 59, 63, and 58. The pace of most of those games was slow but it's a far cry from when the Badgers surrendered 70 or more in five straight back in January. The betting markets appear aware of this mini-transformation. Ken Pom has tonight's game totaled at 139, CRIS opened 136, and it has since been bet down to as low as 133.

"That was definitely a low point," Dekker said. "Third straight game where guys were coming off screens hitting shots, and us letting guys in the lane. Stuff that really bothers you. You go home and think about why did we let this

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Manhattan Jaspers at Rider Broncs

Manhattan -3.5 at Rider
Recommendation: Manhattan

Rider is seeking revenge tonight against Manhattan but that might be all the Broncs have going for them in this game. Manhattan is the better team with greater depth and they have shown recent domination against Rider on multiple occasions. Manhattan cruised to a 67-51 win earlier this season and notched a 62-51 win last year when they last faced off on this court. The Jaspers were sleepwalking a bit through their last game against Niagara, barely escaping with a 78-77 win. It was their third win in a row but not a very sharp performance and perhaps a wakeup call. Manhattan’s strong senior class of George Beamon, Michael Alvarado and Rhamel Brown was too much for Rider to handle in the first meeting as they combined for 38 points.

Rider had a solid three-game winning streak earlier this month but those wins came against Fairfield, St. Peter’s and Monmouth – three of the MAAC’s worst teams. The Broncs have since dropped two straight, losing outright 68-61 as home favorites against Marist and suffering an ugly 82-61 blowout loss on the road at Quinnipiac. Rider has Read more
