Former San Diego hoops player will do time for point shaving

03.02.2013     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
Former San Diego guard Brandon Johnson was sentenced to six months in prison for his role in a point shaving scheme. He did however provide us with one of the greatest quotes of all time...

"Coach was like, how you ain't get a shot up," Johnson is quoted in the transcription of a call. "I'm in the locker room, like, 'You can say what you want, but that's a G ($1,000) right there.' "

College Basketball Handicapping: Four teams vying for two spots in OVC Tournament

03.01.2013     02:21 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The OVC regular season ends Saturday and while five of the eight conference tournament seeds are locked up, there are four teams fighting for the two remaining spots. Only eight of the league’s 12 teams participate in its postseason event so four will be staying home (Jacksonville State is banned from this year’s tournament due to their low APR score (academic progress rating) and Austin Peay has been eliminated. Here are the top five seeds for next week’s OVC Tournament:

#1 – Belmont
#2 – Murray State
#3 – Eastern Kentucky
#4 – Tennessee State
#5 – Morehead State
#6 – SEMO

With the stage set for what could be a drama filled Saturday, let’s take a look at the games of importance:

SIU-Edwardsville @ Eastern Illinois – The winner of this game is in. If SIU-Edwardsville loses, they can still get in if Tennessee-Martin loses at Austin Peay. Should Eastern Illinois lose, they would need Tennessee Tech and Tennessee-Martin to both lose. EIU has designated this a “Blue Out” game encouraging all fans to come dressed in blue and help the Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Pick: Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds at Iona Gaels

Loyola Maryland +4.5 at Iona
Recommendation: Loyola-Maryland

Iona has fallen on hard times in recent weeks. The Gaels were picked to contend for the MAAC regular season title but they’ve struggled to 1-6 SU, 2-5 ATS in their last seven games which has them in the middle of the pack at 9-7. Iona is on a money burning 0-3 ATS mark as favorites in their last three games. The Gaels are very potent offensively averaging over 80 points per game on 45.1% shooting but defensive deficiencies continue to hurt – 76.2 ppg allowed on 43.4% shooting and a woeful 37.1% from the perimeter in their last five games. Asking a team that is having a tough time getting stops on the defensive end of the court to win by margin against a revenge-minded, quality foe like Loyola-Maryland is not something I’m willing to do!

Loyola Maryland is 11-5 in conference play and still has a chance win the MAAC regular season title as they enter the weekend just a half Read more

College Basketball Gambling: Home team on 7-0 SU, 6-1 ATS run in Princeton-Harvard series

Harvard at Princeton -6 O/U 124

Big showdown in the Ivy League tonight with Harvard (9-1) headed to Princeton (7-2). The Crimson won the first meeting two weeks ago, 69-57. Some stats indicate that the Tigers have been one of the more unlucky teams in the country this season. Of their 14 wins, 12 were by double-digits. It's the close games where Princeton has had difficulty with losses by 1, 3, 6 (OT), 7, 3, 4, and 4. The home team has won seven straight in the series (6-1 ATS).

"The first half of the season was pretty rough," Tigers senior captain Ian Hummer said. "We dropped a few games we feel like we should’ve. But from all the games going on, that’s college basketball this year. Teams that are supposed to win are losing and teams that Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Drexel Dragons at Old Dominion Monarchs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Drexel -2.5 at Old Dominion O/U 126.5
Recommendation: Drexel

Old Dominion is 4-24 SU this year, including a 2-14 mark at home in Norfolk.  Head coach Blaine Taylor didn’t survive the Monarchs 2-20 SU start; an absolute disaster for a program that has been a fixture in the postseason for the last eight years, averaging 24 wins per season during that span.  They got a small bump when Jim Corrigan was named interim head coach, but the betting markets reacted very quickly.  That’s why we’ve seen ODU lose SU as favorites twice in their last three games.  And because the Monarchs are ineligible to play in the CAA tournament this year, their final few games are as meaningless as it gets for a downtrodden bottom feeder.

When Taylor was fired, Old Dominion’s first game came at Drexel.  The team responded positively to the coaching change, winning 78-66 as 11.5 point underdogs.  Drexel head coach Bruiser Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Missouri tries to bounce back at South Carolina

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Missouri -9.5 at South Carolina O/U 140

Missouri is viewing tonight's road game at South Carolina as a must-win after losing to Kentucky in overtime last Saturday. Mizzou has had its struggles on the road in SEC play with its lone win coming at woeful Mississippi State. In the Tigers' other six away games they're 0-6 SU/ATS. In the first meeting against the Gamecocks, the Tigers won 71-65 but failed to cover as 14-point home chalk. They were however without Laurence Bowers and Keion Bell.

“If we don’t beat them,” MU guard Phil Pressey said, “then that’s where the problems start coming in to play.”

“It was just the same sad story,” senior forward Alex Oriakhi said Monday, looking back at the 90-83 overtime loss to Read more

College Basketball Gambling: BYU a rare home underdog to No. 2 Gonzaga

02.28.2013     06:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Gonzaga -6 at BYU O/U 147

It was close but last time out BYU finally came away with a pointspread cover against a quality opponent, losing at St. Mary's 64-57 as an 8-point underdog. Since joining the WCC, the Cougars are 1-7 SU and 2-6 ATS vs. Gonzaga and St. Mary's. Tonight they find themselves a 6-point home underdog to Gonzaga on Senior Night. Here is the box score from the first meeting ass-kicking. The last time BYU was catching points at home was back in 2005 (+1.5 vs. UNLV, lost 77-66). As for the Zags, yes, they are pretty good. But with the media chirping about No. 1 rankings and seeds and the recent rash of top-tier teams falling on the road it wouldn't surprise us to see the home side make a game of it tonight in Provo.
