College Basketball Betting Free Play: St. Mary's Gaels at Minnesota Golden Gophers

St. Mary's at Minnesota -6
Recommendation: Minnesota

Minnesota was in the hunt for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid coming down the stretch of the regular season, but it just couldn't break through with a quality road win. In fact, the Gophers lost seven of their last eight games on the road. But that doesn't matter in regards to Sunday's showdown with Saint Mary's in the NIT's version of the Sweet 16. You see, Richard Pitino's team is at home for this game and it is a completely different squad at The Barn. When Minnesota wins at home, something it did in 16 of 19 games this season, it doesn't mess around. In fact, the Gophers have won 15 of their 16 home games by margins of six points or more. That's a convenient stat because most books had Pitino's troops installed as six-point home. We should also note that Minnesota won by double digits in 12 of its 15 home victories. And it's not as if Minnesota was going up against a bunch of scrub squads. The Gophers beat Ohio State by a 63-53 count and thumped Wisconsin, 81-68. Another team in the NCAA Tournament (Iowa) field got bested 95-89 in Minneapolis, while one school left in the NIT field (Florida Read more

NCAA Tournament Gambling News: Iowa State Cyclones lose Niang

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Iowa State's Georges Niang (16.2 ppg) broke his foot during last night's win over NC Central and will miss the rest of the season. His departure leaves the Cyclones with only six contributing players. ISU opened -1 for Sunday's matchup against North Carolina. They've since been bet up to -1.5 with a total of 158.5.

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: Oregon Ducks vs. Wisconsin Badgers

Oregon +5.5 vs. Wisconsin O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Oregon

Oregon is clearly playing its best basketball of the season having won 9 of 10 heading into today's matchup vs. Wisconsin. Defensively and effort-wise the Ducks are finally performing up to their capabilities and coupled with an already stellar offense, this is all of a sudden a very complete outfit. They managed to hold BYU to under 1 point per possession the first round – only the fifth time all season that had happened to the Cougs. Wisconsin didn't have much trouble getting past American in its first round game but things won’t come as easy against the Ducks. The Badgers do a lot of things extremely well – particularly on offense – but defensively, they've been exposed on more than a few occasions. I go back to the Big Ten Tournament when the Badgers allowed Michigan State to run wild (83 points, 1.32 ppp). Also note that in their respective league play, Oregon was actually better (1.03 ppp allowed) than Wisconsin (1.05 ppp allowed) from a defensive efficiency standpoint. Obviously the Big Dance is going to bring out UW's best on the defensive end, but I think Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: Tulsa Golden Hurricane vs. UCLA Bruins

Tulsa vs. UCLA -9 O/U 147.5
Recommendation: Over

Tulsa is no stranger to high scoring affairs having played games well above tonight's total against the likes of Creighton, Oklahoma, and Maryland. And not only were the points there but the pace as well with 74, 75, and 74 possessions, respectively. I'm confident that we'll see a similar output pace-wise in tonight’s first round matchup vs. UCLA. The reason why this total is in a respectable range is because statistically, both squads play above average defense. Tulsa allowed only 0.90 points per possession in C-USA play – and amazingly, hasn't allowed more than 1.00 ppp since January 25. But while the league does feature a few decent offensive outfits, UCLA is on another level. The Bruins boast one of the most efficient offenses in the country AND they can do it by playing at a swift pace (70 possessions per game vs. PAC-12). My only concern is Tulsa not being able to knock down a few threes (32.5%). If Tulsa can find its way to the upper 60's, we'll be in business for an over-the-total winner.

NCAA Tournament Handicapping: UL-Lafayette gets much needed rest

03.20.2014     12:34 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UL-Lafayette vs. Creighton -13.5 O/U 154.5

UL-Lafayette caught a little bit of a break by drawing a Friday first round matchup. The Ragin Cajuns won three games – all barn burners – en route to the Sun Belt title. In fact ULL's last five games were decided by 3, 1, 6, 1, and 1 (OT).

“We played three days in a row, and it took everything out of us. But we’re gonna get that rest, and we’ll be ready to go Friday.”

“I’m glad we’re gonna play on Friday,” he said. “That extra day of rest will be important, for sure.”

NCAA Tournament Betting: Gonzaga comfortable in role of underdog

Oklahoma State -3 vs. Gonzaga O/U 139

Unlike years past, Gonzaga seems to be flying somewhat under the radar this postseason as a small underdog to Oklahoma State for Friday's first round matchup. The Cowboys were -2 from much of the week but earlier today were bet up to -3.

“It feels like we’re kind of flying under the radar,” Pangos said over the phone from the Spokane, Wash., campus as his team continued preparations for a first-round matchup with the No. 9 Oklahoma State Cowboys (21-12) on Friday in San Diego.

“We’ve known we were going to get in (the tournament) for a week, but nobody’s really talking about us. Last year, we were the talk of the tournament. It was, ‘Is Gonzaga overrated, blah, blah, blah.’ ”

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Louisville and Manhattan don't appreciate matchup

03.20.2014     11:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Manhattan vs. Louisville -16 O/U 142.5

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and former assistant/Manhattan head coach Steve Masiello don't sound pleased about tonight's first round matchup.

“We press like him, we trap like him, his offensive sets are just like ours,” Pitino said. “That’s why I don’t like the game. I don’t think it’s fair. I don’t like it. I don’t know why they would do it. I just don’t like the game at all for either one of us. We won the national championship and obviously we’re more heralded, but this is anybody’s game. This is not a 1-16.”

“To see them come up and then see us come up against them, it takes a little fun out of it,” Masiello told reporters. “It’s just, that’s not fun for me going against someone that I have to now try to beat, and almost in my mind, think negatively about. It’s hard for me to do that.”
