College Basketball Betting: Despite streak, UCLA nervous about trip to Washington State

03.06.2013     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
UCLA -3 at Washington State

UCLA has won 19 straight games at Washington State but 10 off those were by five points or fewer. Off last weekend's big win over Arizona, head coach Ben Howland seems leery of tonight's game. Bettors are as well as Wazzu was steamed down from +4 to +2.5 on the overnight lines. A little buy back has the Bruins -3/-3.5 as of this morning. UCLA won last year’s meeting 63-60. The year before that, a 58-54 overtime victory.

“Those of us that have been there know how many close calls we’ve had in Pullman here in recent memory,” Howland said of playing at Pullman. “I know and have tried to really impress upon our players that if we don’t show up and play our best, we are definitely putting ourselves in an opportunity to lose on Read more

Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Preview

This will mark the third year of the double-bye system for the OVC Tournament. Eight teams made the field; the bottom four play on Wednesday. The No. 3 and No. 4 seeds get a first round bye. The two division winners, No. 1 Belmont (East) and No. 2 Murray State (West) received double-byes. Over the last 11 tournaments, no team has won in all with more than four regular season conference losses. If history repeats itself, either Belmont (14-2) or Eastern Kentucky (12-4) will cut down the nets. Murray State benefited from the OVC splitting into two divisions thanks to the addition of Belmont. The Racers had the fourth-best record (10-6) but won the weaker West Division, hence their No. 2 seed.

First Round Pick: Southeast Missouri
There were a lot of expectations for Dickey Nutt's bunch heading into the season but the Redhawks got off to a sluggish 3-7 start in league play and were on the verge of potentially being left out of the postseason. But the back half of the schedule was more favorable and this team started to gain confidence winning five out of its last six league games by Read more

College Basketball Gambling Free Pick: Illinois Fighting Illini at Iowa Hawkeyes

Illinois at Iowa -4.5 O/U 135.5
Recommendation: Iowa

The betting markets seem to think that Illinois has turned the corner after reeling off six wins in its last seven games.  I’m not buying that argument.  Let me break down those six wins right here.
First, the Illini positively stole one at home against Indiana when DJ Richardson got hot down the stretch as the Hoosiers blew a 14-point second half lead.  Then they faced Minnesota when the Gophers were in the midst of their awful mid-season slump.  Then came one good win, a home blowout over Purdue.  Their last three victories have come against the three weakest teams in the conference (Penn State, Northwestern and Nebraska), and two of those three were tight – they barely squeaked past the Nittany Lions and had to rally from behind in the last six minutes on Senior Day to beat the Cornhuskers.

So for all of their recent success, Illinois’ recent hot streak Read more

College Basketball Betting: Revenge plus head coaches' feud has Marshall geared up

Southern Miss -6 at Marshall O/U 139.5

Marshall is obviously looking for some home revenge tonight after Southern Mississippi blasted the Herd 102-46 earlier this season, but the dislike for their opponent runs even deeper.

It's because Tyndall and Herrion don't like each other. That stems from an incident when Tyndall was coaching Morehead State and Herrion contacted him in hopes of scheduling a game.

After Tyndall declined, I wrote about Marshall's non-conference scheduling problems and chided Morehead State for not playing an annual series with the nearby Herd. That prompted Tyndall to contact Herrion and accuse him of putting me up to writing the column. That, of course, is preposterous.

Yet, that's what led to Tyndall running up the score.

College Basketball Gambling: Youngstown State's leading scorer Perry still out

03.05.2013     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Loyola Chicago at Youngstown State -2

Doesn't look like Youngstown State's leading scorer Kendrick Perry (knee) will be available for tonight's Horizon League Tournament first round matchup vs. Loyola. Head coach Jerry Slocum hinted that he may play on Friday should the Penguins advance. The Ramblers also have injury concerns. Point guard Cully Payne has missed the last five games and won't play tonight. Forward Ben Averkamp did return last time out against Cleveland State after missing nearly a month due to a concussion.

“The latest on him is — I don’t know,” Penguins coach Jerry Slocum said. “That moves from a definite ‘No’ before to an ‘I don’t know’ right now.

“If you had to paint me into a corner, I’d say probably not. If we were able to Read more

Horizon League Tournament Preview

As structured as this tournament is to reward the regular season champ, it has been far from automatic for the top seed of late with the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds winning three of the last four titles. That said, since changing the format of the tournament back in 2003, seven out of the last 10 years have featured a No. 1 vs. No. 2 final. Not once during that span has a seed lower than No. 3 reached the finals.

First Round Pick: UW-Milwaukee +14
Not a lot to like about the Panthers this season – they were without question the worst team in the league. But their struggles have been well accounted for in the line for quite some time. And I like that Green Bay won both meetings by big margins (74-54 and 78-61). Both contests were actually fairly close for a while before GB went on ridiculous scoring runs. UWM has nothing to lose and knows it can hang with its in-state rival. Worth a shot on the underdog.

Darkhorse: Given the history of this tournament and how strong #1 Valpo and #2 Detroit have been this season, it's hard to have any sort of confidence in a true Read more

College Basketball Betting Update: Texas Longhorns continue their OVER the total run

03.05.2013     06:14 AM     Printer Friendly

Another game another OVER for Texas as last night's game against Baylor hit 149 points. It got dicey for a while with the score 125 with a little over two minutes remaining. But fouls and free throws the rest of the way helped bettors cash yet another ticket with the opening (137) and closing (139) numbers.

Defensively, it marked the seventh game in a row (all with Myck Kabongo) that Texas allowed over a point per possession (1.10). The Longhorns offset that with one of their better offensive games of the season with 79 points, 1.24 ppp, and 58.3% eFG. It doesn't look like UT's regular season finale vs. Texas Tech will be nationally televised which means the totals market will be made up of just a few shops with small limits. Most bettors will have to wait until the first round of next week's Big XII Tournament to continue riding the Texas Over Train.

College Basketball Handicapping: Texas a completely different team with Kabongo

03.04.2013     08:43 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
During non-conference play, Texas allowed more than a point per possession just once – it somehow came in the Longhorns' infamous loss to Chaminade. And there went more than a handful of quality opponents during that stretch including Georgetown, UCLA, North Carolina, and Michigan State. Heading into Big XII play, Texas had one of the better defenses in the country. When conference play began, Texas remained above average, holding six of its first 10 league opponents to under a point per possession. But then in mid-February, guard Myck Kabongo became eligible and Texas' identity started to change. For starters, Texas started playing at a slightly faster pace and put the ball in the bucket with more frequency. But while scoring was up with Kabongo on the floor, the defense was way down. In Texas' first 23 games, without Kabongo, they allowed over a point per possession only five times. With Kabongo (6 games) they've allowed the following: 1.06, 1.08, 1.06, 1.25, 1.14, and 1.05. The betting markets have clearly picked up on this little trend. Check out the opening and close numbers for Texas' three lined games with Kabongo in the lineup.
