College Basketball Gambling: USC looks for payback against Arizona

02.27.2013     07:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona -6.5 at USC

A little role reversal tonight between Arizona and USC. In the first meeting the situation favored the Wildcats who were off a home loss to UCLA whereas USC was on the road and a day removed from a wild 98-93 overtime loss at Arizona State. The end result was ugly as Arizona rolled over USC, 74-50. For tonight's meeting, the Trojans are off a loss to rival UCLA and still have the first loss to Arizona fresh in their minds. The Wildcats meanwhile have a huge game with UCLA on deck.

"We will be a lot more motivated (this time)," USC guard J.T. Terrell said.

"I don't think anyone on the team has forgotten how we lost to them," Wesley said. "That loss has stuck in my mind. I've been thinking a lot about that."

College Basketball Betting: Akron takes 18-game winning streak to Ohio

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Akron at Ohio -3.5

It's the MAC Game of the Year tonight as Akron (12-0) travels to Ohio (11-1). In the first meeting the Bobcats held a 13-point first half lead but were outscored 76-49 the rest of the way as the Zips won 86-72. Akron comes in riding an 18-game winning streak. Ohio has won 21 straight conference games at the Convocation Center.

"We're not going to hide from it or lie about, all that stuff makes this game bigger," Ohio senior guard Walter Offutt said. "It makes it bigger that they're ranked in the top 25. It makes it bigger than a win here helps their case for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid if they need it.

"I think all the pressure is on them more than us, because win or Read more

College Basketbal Betting Free Pick: Auburn Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Auburn +11.5 at Alabama O/U 119
Recommendation: Auburn

Alabama hasn’t been just bad a home chalk in SEC play…they’ve been abysmal! The results don’t lie as the Crimson Tide enter tonight’s rivalry showdown against Auburn on a dreadful 0-6 ATS run in their six SEC home games as favorites. They had single-digit home wins against Tennessee, Arkansas, LSU and Texas A&M – none of which were enough for a pointspread cover as home favorites. Alabama was only able to beat SEC bottom feeders Mississippi State by 8 as 15-point home favorites and South Carolina by 10 as 12-point home favorites. The spot is not good either for the home team tonight. Alabama is coming off a wild triple OT thriller at LSU coming up just short 97-94 after blowing a 10-point lead with 2 minutes left. That isn’t the kind of loss that is easy to rebound from especially when you are talking about a team needing to win by a significant margin.

Big XII will review missed calls in Iowa State-Kansas fiasco

02.26.2013     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
Good news. Actually, it isn't good news but rather a painful reminder for those who wagered on Iowa State. The Big XII is going to review some of the absolutely horrific calls/no calls in last night's ISU-KU debacle. Sure could use one of those sportsbook marketing promotions where they step in and refund bets à la Seattle-Green Bay.

"We will handle the situation and approach the teams appropriately," said Shaw. "We review every play and take the appropriate action."

College Basketball Handicapping: Xavier wants slower pace vs. Memphis

02.26.2013     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Memphis -4.5 at Xavier O/U 133

Sounds like Xavier is going to try to slow down the tempo of tonight's game against Memphis. It won't be easy as the Tigers have not only picked up the pace of their games (70 or more possessions last 5 games) but have been scoring in bunches (89, 93, 71, 81, and 89 points last five games).

On paper the game appears to be far more important to Memphis who can pick up a decent non-conference road win and improve its postseason stock. Xavier on the other hand isn't in the at-large discussion and comes in off a cataclysmic meltdown in which it blew a 17-point second half lead to VCU last Saturday.

“Memphis is a very fast team from defense to offense, whether it’s off the made shot or missed shots. We have to make sure that we can put them in the half-court,” Robinson said. “I think it will Read more

College Basketball Betting: Minnesota brings in shrink to help solves woes

Indiana -6 at Minnesota O/U 139.5

Boy, times have changed. Back in the day, if you lost four of five you simply practiced harder and maybe coach rolled out the puke buckets for a practice or two to really get your attention. Minnesota apparently isn’t worried about the physical part of the game – like trying to figure out how to crack 60 points. Instead, the Gophers see their struggles as more of a mental thing. So much so that they brought in a shrink – sorry, sports psychologist. Whatever works, Tubby.

“Generally, I help people understand how their thoughts and emotions impact performance,” said Aberman, who works with the Minnesota Twins and Gophers football, baseball and men’s tennis. “We know that physical skills and talent are important, Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Florida's lineup just got thinner

02.25.2013     11:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida has played much of the season with an eight-man rotation but it's now down to six after injuries to key reserves Will Yeguete (knee) and now Michael Frazier. Frazier (concussion) is one of the team's top three-point shooter at 48.9%. Both players are expected to miss Tuesday's game at Tennessee but could return by Saturday. The Vols have won six of their last seven in Knoxville against the Gators. UF's lone win (2011) came in overtime.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Fade the Dead in College Hoops

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s late February, and there’s still two more full weeks of regular season action in college hoops before the madness truly begins. It’s too early to write about conference tournament betting strategies – I’ll save that for next week. But it’s not too late to write about the bevy of ‘dead’ teams that are populating the college hoops landscape right now; teams that are lethargically playing out the string of the regular season. Sometimes, the sharp move is to lay big points fading sorry teams.

Even bad teams have hope in November – the season is fresh and new; teammates aren’t sick and tired of each other or their coaches, and the nagging injuries haven’t started to pile up. And teams that get smacked around in non-conference play for two months get an opportunity to regroup against comparable competition when conference play begins in January.

But when things go south in conference play, it’s not easy for many of these squads to continue competing at the same level they were earlier in the season. By late February, the final few weeks of the regular season are a meat grinder for struggling Read more
