College Basketball Betting Free Play: Miami Hurricanes at Duke Blue Devils

Miami (FL) at Duke -15 O/U 141.5
Recommendation: Under

I mentioned on the podcast that this appears to be a good situation to step in and play the under. Unlike last year, Miami has more players and as a result has scored more and at times play a faster tempo. But Jim Larranaga is a smart coach and knows that trading baskets on the road vs. Duke is not a recipe for success. And let's not forget that the Hurricanes are still fairly slow, ranking 279th in terms of adjusted tempo. Duke meanwhile should be sitting on a pretty good defensive effort. Last time out they allowed 87 to NC State and watched the Wolf Pack hit a ridiculous 10-of-16 from three. Does that mean Duke is a bad defensive team? No. They're not great but in their previous six games vs. top 100 teams, the held the opposition to 63 ppg. And at home off of that showing, you can bet Coach K emphasized plenty of defenses in practice the last two days. Adding to it is that the Hurricanes aren't a great offensive team. They scored only 99 points combined in home losses to Green Bay and Eastern Kentucky and will likely struggle to top 60 points in this affair as we look to play it under the Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: California Golden Bears at UCLA Bruins

California +7 at UCLA O/U 135
Recommendation: California

Classic "bounce" game as California, off a dismal showing vs. USC, heads to UCLA, who snapped a five-game losing streak with a double OT win over Stanford. The Golden Bears have really struggled to score without Jabari Bird who remains out with a foot injury. But lost in all of the talk about UCLA's offensive struggles is that their defense isn't very good. The Cardinal spent 35 minutes getting open look after open look but not before they got passive late and allowed the Bruins to sneak back into the game. And it wasn't just Stanford; multiple teams, both high quality and mediocre, have been able to successfully attack and score on UCLA's soft defense. Ultimately this comes down to a question of why are the Bruins laying this type of price against comparable competition? This is a very young team who may be without a full-strength Norman Powell, one of the few veterans on the squad. No question Cal hasn't played great basketball but having off since Wednesday should put them in position for a better showing. Enough to stick around until the end.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Missouri Tigers at Auburn Tigers

Missouri +6 at Auburn
Recommendation: Missouri

I've watched Missouri a number of times this season and they've without question steadily improved. It comes from adjusting to first-year head coach Kim Anderson as well as facing an incredibly challenging schedule. Early in the season, the Tigers lost to Missouri-Kansas City and were blown out by Arizona, Purdue, Oklahoma, and Xavier. Then they played rival Illinois to the wire and did the same in an OT loss vs. Oklahoma State. Last time out, they got past a quality LSU squad in overtime. I also noticed the rise in post play with Keanau Post (12 points, all dunks vs. LSU) inserted into the rotation. Coupled with Jonathan Williams, the Tigers now are able to create spacing and thus open up the perimeter. Meanwhile Auburn, like Missouri, is in a bit of rebuilding mode. They have a few nice pieces and have shown capable with a home win over Xavier. The problem is this team still has a little bit of last year's stink on it. Meaning, they aren't very polished, and are prone to bad stretches of play, particularly against comparable competition. The talent level for both squads is very even and I don't see Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Colorado Buffaloes at Utah Utes

Colorado at Utah -11 O/U 124.5
Recommendation: Under

Colorado likely to find it tough to score tonight as it heads to Utah. The Buffaloes are at times a one-man show with Askia Booker the only player capable of scoring on his own. As a result, and as we've seen multiple times, I expect the Buffaloes to revert back to their pass-happy methodical ways in hopes of staying within reach of the Utes. Utah's offense looks impressive and is above average but Colorado marks a decent step up in class compared to USC and UCLA. Against better competition, the Utes netted 49 vs. San Diego State, 60 vs. Wichita, and 60 vs. Kansas. Ultimately this comes down to Utah's defense which has been outstanding. They've allowed over a point per possession only three times all season and do an excellent job at taking away the opposition's offensive strengths. Neither team plays at a particularly quick pace which has us on market fade alert as we play the under.

College Basketball Handicapping: What to do with UCLA moving forward

01.05.2015     02:09 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So if you haven't already noticed, UCLA is really bad. Or at least that's how they've been playing the last three weeks. They can't win, can't cover, and have been an under bettor's dream because they can't score despite playing at a fast clip. Look, as of now, unless I come across a great piece of information, playing a conference game over the total just isn't in the cards. However, knowing the natural ebb and flow of a season, I can tell you that the Bruins are at some point going to cash in on some overs.

For starters, four of their last five games were on the road and all but one opponent (Alabama) was what I would consider to be defensively elite. Some of the blame can no question be placed on the offense which has little to no room for growth if Bryce Alford remains the team's top scoring option. Adding to it is that they don't have a true point guard nor any pop off the bench. Pretty bleak, right? But when you step back and look at the bigger picture I see potential -- and by potential I mean "overs."

Of UCLA's seven losses, all but one was on the road and the lone home game, sure enough, went flying over the total with 160 points. And the one Read more
