College Basketball Betting Free Play: UC Davis Aggies at Stanford Cardinal

03.17.2015     08:30 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UC Davis +8.5 at Stanford O/U 149.5
Recommendation: UC Davis

A lot of these secondary postseason tournaments come down to effort. Over the next two nights bettors will see a number of teams that simply go through the motions. Stanford was in position to get into the NCAA Tournament but lost four of five down the stretch. Per usual, head coach Johnny Dawkins is spewing a lot of coach-speak about being "excited" to play but I'm not buying it. This is UC Davis' first postseason appearance under head coach Jim Les. He's done one of the better coaching jobs in the country having taken the Aggies from 9-22 to 25-5 in just one season. Obviously a trip to the Big Dance would have been far more gratifying but to be playing just down the road against a PAC-12 team is likely to spur on a solid effort. Fundamentally, UC Davis can put the ball in the bucket and that's what you want to see with an underdog. They shoot a nation's-best 44.4% from three and have a top-tier player in Corey Hawkins. I watched UCD play at Washington State earlier this season. After a slow start, they played the Cougars fairly even and eventually lost by seven. They're capable Read more

Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Minnesota Twins

03.16.2015     01:11 PM     Printer Friendly
copy_mlb_preview_2015].jpg

After years of quality and consistent pitching, Minnesota's inability to produce on the mound has the organization in free-fall. There's talent on the way but the impact is still a ways off.

Minnesota Twins
2014 W-L:
70-92
2014 O/U: 87-69-6
2014 Profits: -6.5
2015 O/U Wins: 70.5
2015 AL Central Odds: +2575
Projected Starting Rotation: Phil Hughes, Ervin Santana, Ricky Nolasco, Kyle Gibson, Tommy Milone
Key Departures: None
Key Additions: Ervin Santana

Handicapper’s Take: “The Twins have fallen from the ranks of competitive MLB franchises in recent years.  They improved to 70 wins last year after winning just 66 in 2013, 66 in 2012 and 63 in 2011.  This team hasn’t shown a profit for their supporters since the 2010 campaign; the last time they were competitive.  It’s very hard to make money betting on the very worst teams in baseball, and Paul Molitor’s squad certainly has Read more

Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Washington Nationals

03.16.2015     12:58 PM     Printer Friendly
copy_mlb_preview_2015].jpg

With arguably the best starting rotation in baseball, expectations are sky-high (and so will their prices) for the Washington Nationals.

Washington Nationals
2014 W-L:
96-66
2014 O/U: 77-72-13
2014 Profits: +10.6
2015 O/U Wins: 93.5
2015 NL East Odds: -475
Projected Starting Rotation: Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer, Jordan Zimmermann, Doug Fister, Gio Gonzalez
Key Departures: Tyler Clippard, Adam LaRoche
Key Additions: Max Scherzer, Yunel Escobar

Handicapper’s Take: “Washington heads into this year as the class of the National League East. And last month’s free agent acquisition of Max Scherzer sealed their position as favorites to win the NL pennant. Their 93.5 season over/under win total is the league's’ highest and could very easily be eclipsed if everything goes right. The positives are obvious and plenty as Washington owns seven legitimate starters for a five-man rotation, they return every piece of last Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: UConn Huskies vs. SMU Mustangs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UConn vs. SMU
Recommendation: SMU 1st half -1.5

If you look at the win probability chart on last night's AAC semifinal matchup between Tulsa and UConn, you'll notice is looks awful similar to that of a heartbeat. On multiple occasions, with less than 10 minutes to go, both teams had win probabilities of 90% or higher. The Huskies though prevailed and are a game away from slipping into the Big Dance. As for the Mustangs, even if they lose they are a lock to earn an at-large berth. But don't forget last year's snub job, something the team isn't leaving to chance. Fatigue is a real concern for UConn, especially Ryan Boatright who hasn't gone to the bench since their team's first round game. For much of this tournament, he's been the only UConn player who can score on his own. SMU's advantage in this one is offense. Cincinnati and Tulsa are no strangers to poor shooting. The Mustangs boast the best offense in the AAC (1.11 ppp) and showed as much when they hung 73 on the Huskies in a blowout win in Dallas back in February. Even with UConn playing well beyond their regular season stats, they can't win this game scoring 47 points like last night. After two Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Auburn Tigers vs. Kentucky Wildcats

Auburn vs. Kentucky -23.5 O/U 137
Recommendation: Over

It's unlikely you'll see 185 combined points again but I have a difficult time envisioning Auburn doing much to contain Kentucky this afternoon. I've noted multiple times that Calipari wants his Wildcats to play fast and score points but when you're facing the likes of Florida, it can be difficult to create much flow. You can create flow vs. Auburn with open looks, high percentage shots, and plenty of transition opportunities. Let's give Bruce Pearl credit, not for anything he's done strategically, but getting his kid in the right frame of mind to compete -- a difficult task after such a dismal regular season. The Tigers are in this spot in large part because they've managed to defend having held their first three tournament opponents to less than a point per possession. That may not seem impressive but consider that they did it only twice during conference regular season play. I think that Pearl is going to try to play it more conservatively on offense, maybe try to take the air out of the ball some, but that's not going to work long assuming the Tigers will be down by double digits for much of Read more

Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Los Angeles Angels

03.13.2015     11:34 AM     Printer Friendly
copy_mlb_preview_2015].jpg

Big wins and profits in 2014 but it was all for not as the Los Angeles Angels fizzled in the postseason. They're once again poised to contend but their high profile status suggests betting opportunities will be limited.

Los Angeles Angels
2014 W-L:
98-64
2014 O/U: 80-77-5
2014 Profits: +21.4
2015 O/U Wins: 88
2015 AL West Odds: +160
Projected Starting Rotation: Jered Weaver, CJ Wilson, Hector Santiago, Matt Shoemaker, Garrett Richards
Key Departures: Jason Grilli, Howie Kendrick
Key Additions: Matt Joyce, Andrew Heaney

Handicapper’s Take: “In 2014, the Angels put together the best record in baseball (98-64) with the second-best run differential (+137). In addition, a one unit bet on the Angels last season returned over +20 units of profit. Of course this was all for nothing as the Angels were swept by the Kansas City Royals in the playoffs. Their strong season was largely based on featuring the best offense in the game Read more

Sportsmemo's MLB Betting Preview: Baltimore Orioles

03.13.2015     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
copy_mlb_preview_2015].jpg

Off 96 wins and a trip the ALCS, the Baltimore Orioles remain virtually the same team heading into 2015. That may or may not be a good thing with terms like "overachieve" and "regression" being commonly used to describe 2015's projections.

Baltimore Orioles
2014 W-L:
96-66
2014 O/U: 69-89-4
2014 Profits: +34.8
2015 O/U Wins: 82.5
2015 AL East Odds: +370
Projected Starting Rotation: Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris, Miguel Gonzalez, Kevin Gausman
Key Departures: Nelson Cruz, Nick Markakis
Key Additions: Travis Snider

Handicapper's Take: "The Baltimore Orioles have put in some great years under skipper Buck Showalter but can they sustain the seemingly unsustainable level they’ve been playing at?  The major question mark for this team will be their starting pitching. Chris Tillman, Wei-Yin Chen, Bud Norris, Miguez Gonzalez and Ubaldo Jimenez are all average to slightly Read more
