NFL Handicapping: Baltimore fires offensive coordinator Cam Cameron

12.10.2012     11:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So because the Ravens got Kirk Cousin'd on Sunday, they've decided to fire offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. Quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell will take over.

“There is a very human side to this. Cam is my friend, he taught me a lot about coaching, and he is an outstanding coach. Personally, this is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do as a coach,” Harbaugh said in a statement released by the team. Harbaugh will have a news conference later this afternoon. “Cam has been a significant contributor to all of our successes over the past four, almost five, seasons.  Deservedly, he is highly regarded, and we owe thanks to him for what he did for the Ravens.”

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: Looking at the contenders in the AFC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I spent the last few Sunday’s concentrating on some pretty bad football teams. It’s December now; time to shift my focus towards the other end of the spectrum. This week, I focused on four AFC Playoff contenders. Which teams have the potential to do some damage when January rolls around and which are frauds? Read on to find out!

Indianapolis - Indy is certainly not a Super Bowl contender. But given that they were seven point underdogs at 4-7 Detroit, the betting markets aren’t even calling the Colts a playoff caliber team. Even with starting cornerback Vontae Davis back in the lineup following a four game injury absence, the pass defense spent all afternoon getting torched. Where's the pass rush? Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis were non-factors here.

The offensive line got dominated by Detroit’s front four for most of the afternoon. Andrew Luck was beaten up, taking one big hit after the next. Coming into the game with four fumbles and 10 INTs in five previous road games, Luck's emphasis was on ball security here. That emphasis didn’t work. He hit seven different receivers in the first half, but also threw a pair Read more

Whoa.

"Right now, Charlie Batch is our quarterback."

Relax, Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin countered by saying that there is a chance Ben Roethlisberger – who threw at practice on Monday – will play Sunday against the Ravens. List him questionable all you want Steelers, you know damn well he’s playing.

"Ben threw the ball," Tomlin said. "He'll take steps maybe toward playing this week. We'll leave that door open. He's got a chance."

"It was a failure," he said. "Very rarely do you lose a game and can point to a few ares of failure for why you lost, but we turned the ball over and were penalized on offense. We talked all week about being backup quarterback friendly.

"Those things aren't quarterback friendly. I chiefly accept responsibility for the lack of ball security. That eliminated any chance for rhythm and success. Read more

NFL Gambling Alert: Roethlisberger out, Baltimore bet up to -3

Baltimore -3 at Pittsburgh O/U 41

According to FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (shoulder, rib) will not play Sunday against Baltimore. Byron Leftwich is expected to start in his place. Over the last 12 hours bettors took out nearly all of the 2.5's with the Ravens now 3-point favorites. The total was also hammered down from and opener of 45.5 to 41/41.5. Roethlisberger isn't the only Pittsburgh player with injury concerns. Antonio Brown, Marcus Gilbert, Troy Polamalu and Rashard Mendenhall are all questionable.

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: AFC Contenders and Pretenders

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
November is the time in the NFL where we separate contenders from pretenders. Last week, I focused on the NFC; this week, I’ll turn to the AFC. Unfortunately, the Colts and Steelers didn’t play on Sunday, and the Texans’ Sunday Night game was played in weather conditions that affected the game (and the game plan) significantly. Who among the rest can challenge for AFC supremacy? Read on to find out.

Denver Broncos - Another slow start for a West Coast team traveling East; certainly not unusual. Slow starts have been a consistent problem for Denver all year. We saw them fall behind by three scores when they faced Atlanta, Houston and San Diego – three of the tougher foes they've faced. But slow starts are about the only fault I can find with this team right now.

We already know how good Denver’s offense can be, and they score touchdowns : 22 TDs in 32 red zone possessions. The Broncos have an elite quarterback, a strong running game and playmaking WR's - they can trade points with anybody. This team's postseason future rests on the strength (or weakness) of their stop unit; a unit that has stepped up at times and Read more

NFL Betting News and Notes Week 7

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If the Washington Redskins learned anything after Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, it would be not to allow Eli Manning the chance to have the football with his team trailing by one score in the final minutes. Robert Griffin III had a miraculous scramble play on a fourth down to keep a late fourth quarter drive alive en route to a terrific touchdown throw to Santana Moss which gave the Redskins a brief lead. It didn’t last long as Manning hit Victor Cruz for a 73-yard touchdown pass to give the Giants the win in a back and forth 27-23 affair. Despite the straight up win for New York, Washington got the ATS win and continue to cash tickets for their backers against their NFC East rivals. Washington is now 4-0 ATS against the G-Men dating back to January 2011.

I don’t think the term “right side winner” can be any more accurate than it was with the Houston Texans on Sunday. It was a dominant 43-13 win and easy 6.5-point home chalk cover for the Texans in which they outgained the Baltimore Ravens 420-176, had a huge 27-12 edge in first downs, and a +2 TO margin. Quarterback Joe Flacco and the Baltimore no-huddle offense continues to Read more

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: NFL betting trends and Week 7 recap

10.22.2012     08:19 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There are three strong prevailing trends this season in the NFL.

NFC Underdogs – any underdog in any game – have gone 34-7-2 ATS this season, even after suffering their first losing week of the season (2-3-1 ATS in Week 7).

Teams heading into the bye week are 1-13 ATS, discounting the games where one pre-bye team faced off against another (0-2 ATS in Week 7).

And teams coming out of the bye are on a 7-2 ATS streak heading into the Bears-Lions showdown on Monday Night (2-1 ATS so far in Week 7).

All three trends pass the “Does it make any sense?” test. The NFC underdogs trend has a relatively simple explanation. All the worst teams in the NFL are in the AFC this year. Carolina, St Louis and Tampa Bay – the three lowest rated NFC teams in my power ratings – all rank above the likes of Jacksonville, Kansas City, Buffalo, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Tennessee and Oakland. No surprise, then, that the NFC has dominated interconference play thus far. And without any weaklings to beat up on, we’ve seen NFC favorites struggle to build margins against their in-conference competitors.

The pre-bye trend of Read more

I think we know the Oakland Raiders aren’t great but they did play a solid football game and certainly good enough to beat Atlanta. The Raiders outgained the Falcons 474-286 which included 149-45 yard rushing 325-241 yard passing edges. Oakland also nearly doubled Atlanta in time of possession. What was the difference? Oakland failed to capitalize on Atlanta’s turnovers. Atlanta capitalized on Oakland’s turnovers including a huge 79-yard INT touchdown return for by Asante Samuel to give Atlanta a 20-13 – it came when Oakland was driving in Atlanta territory and looking to take the lead. The Falcons stand alone as the only undefeated team in the NFL at 6-0 but it’s becoming clear they have become an overvalued commodity in the betting markets. Atlanta won the game 23-20 but never sniffed a pointspread cover as 9.5-point home favorites. It’s a clear indicator there are no bargains to support the “dirty birds” these days.

Another example of statistical dominance not equaling a straight up win was with the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys played arguably their best game of the season and it still feel short against the Ravens. Dallas Read more

NFL Handicapping: Ravens lose two defensive starters, bettors flock towards Texans

10.15.2012     01:19 PM     Printer Friendly
Baltimore at Houston -6 O/U 47

Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh just announced that linebacker Ray Lewis and cornerback Lardarius Webb will miss the rest of the season due to injury. That leaves an already shaky Ravens defense (26th, 396.7 ypg allowed) without two starters. Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata (knee) was just upgraded to probable. Houston was bet up from a 4.5-point favorite to -6 and could be headed higher. Line history courtesy of Pinnacle.
