Odds for 2011 MLB Division Winners

03.24.2011     09:26 AM     Printer Friendly
Pinnacle is offering odds on who will win each MLB division for the upcoming season (see chart below). The Minnesota Twins are a slight favorite over the Chicago White Sox to win American League Central. In the AL East, the Boston Red Sox are -166 favorites while the Yankees check in at over 2-1. The Texas Rangers earned top spot in the AL West. The Milwaukee Brewers are the top betting pick in the NL Central following the loss of St. Louis' Adam Wainwright (arm injury). The biggest chalk on the board is the Philadelphia Phillies at nearly 3-1 to win the NL East. In the West, the reigning World Series champs, the San Francisco Giants, are a slight favorite over the Colorado Rockies.

Sportsmemo is ready to kickoff the 2011 MLB season in style with multiple handicapper package options. The last two seasons have been outstanding with monster profits from the Sportsmemo Crew.

MLB Betting Free Play: Milwaukee at Houston

09.14.2010     11:35 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly

Milwaukee (Capunao) at Houston (Norris) -125
Recommendation: Houston

This is a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions right now.  The Astros are surging; 16-6 in their last 22 games.  They’re even better playing at Minute Maid Park: 17-6 in their last 23, dating back to July.  They’ve won five straight at home against the Brewers, outscoring Milwaukee 22-4 in those contests.

Meanwhile, Ken Macha’s Brewers are slumping.  They’ve scored only four runs in their last four games while winning just four times in their last 13 contests; notching just a single road victory in their last seven tries.  Cleanup hitter Prince Fielder has the flu, unlikely to play this evening.

Houston is 8-1 in Bud Norris’ last nine starts, and Norris has four quality starts in his last six trips to the hill, including three straight at home.  And the Astros have enjoyed plenty of success against lefties like Milwaukee’s Chris Read more

Pitching matchups provide late season betting value

Submitted by Andrew Lange

I wanted to point out five baseball games for today that are very interesting from a price standpoint.   Cincinnati (Bailey) at San Francisco (Bumgarner) -110
Both teams are practically even record-wise. The Giants are 39-23 at home and Bumgarner is a better pitcher than Bailey yet the price is basically a pick 'em.

Chicago (Dempster) -105 at Washington (Marquis) -105
Another situation where both squads are practically even. The difference is Dempster owns a 3.56 ERA while Marquis' is 11.39. If this game took place in mid-May, the Cubs would be -150 favorite or more.

Los Angeles (Kuroda) EV at Milwaukee (Wolf)
Up until two weeks ago, the Dodgers had easily outperformed the Brewers from a seasonal standpoint but with LA all but out of the NL West race, the effort has waned and the gap is now minimal. That being said, here is another lopsided matchup of starting pitchers with Kurdoa sporting a 3.48 ERA and currently in good form Read more

Milwaukee Brewers continue to baffle bettors

08.03.2010     06:26 AM     Printer Friendly
Below are the mysterious offense performances of the Milwaukee Brewers over their last four games. It was on Monday afternoon's Sportsmemo Radio Show that Erin Rynning sarcastically said, “this is the game the Brewers will score 15 runs” in reference to Monday's evening contest against Randy Wells and the Cubs.

Friday - Wesley Wright, Wilton Lopez, Brandon Lyon = 2 runs, 4 hits, 8 Ks

Saturday - Wandy Rodriguez, Tim Byrdak, Nelson Figueroa = 0 runs, 6 hits, 11 Ks

Sunday - JA Happ, Wilton Lopez, Brandon Lyon, Matt Linstrom = 0 runs, 4 hits, 9 Ks

Monday - Randy Wells, Justin Berg, Casey Coleman, Brian Schlitter = 18 runs, 26 hits, 9 Ks

It is so Brewers to have a four-game stretch with 5 runs per game and .270 team batting average but lose three of four. And it is so Cubs to win seven of 11 out of the break but then go on a six-game losing streak where you were outscored 63-17. Read more

MLB Prop Bet: San Francisco Giants Team Total Over

07.06.2010     09:10 AM     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

San Francisco at Milwaukee
Recommendation: San Fran Team Total Over 3.5 (-125 @ Pinnacle)

In Milwaukee starters Randy Wolf’s eight starts this season at Miller Park, opposing teams have scored 5, 9, 10, 1, 9, 7, 7 and 5 runs. Parts of those outputs were as a result the Brewers’ horrific bullpen but Wolf played a sizable role. In those 48 innings, Wolf surrendered 12 home runs and had a 1.63 WHIP. Those struggles easily outweigh San Francisco’s mediocre offensive ability. The Giants put six runs on the board last night against the Brew Crew and on the season have shown more ability to hit lefties (.737 team OPS). Three out of every four Milwaukee home games this season featured four runs or more from the opposition. Sixth-five percent of those 40 contests saw five runs or more. Shop around for the best number and play the Giants over the team total.

Weekend Bullpen Outlook: Has Wood found his groove?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Rob Veno

It’s time to realize and recognize that right now there are some positive changes taking place in what previously were some dreadful bullpens. With only 10 days of games remaining before the All-Star break, there are three teams in particular that have managed to find ways to currently harbor some cautious optimism where their relief pitching is concerned. Of course, like so many other facets of a major league baseball game a lot of the optimism is situational. Still, there is now some hope where none could be found for the first two and a half months of this season. Here’s the short list of some recent large turnarounds for teams whose bullpens until about 15 days ago were automatic go-against.

Milwaukee – Andrew and I talked a bit about this group on the Sports Memo radio show earlier this week and a real pattern is beginning to show. Manager Ken Macha has obviously settled in on lefty Zach Read more

MLB Stock Watch: Parra, Floyd and Cain

06.25.2010     07:21 AM     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Erin Rynning

Manny Parra
– We’ve been waiting for the Brewers to insert Parra into their starting rotation.  The organization erred in the offseason when signing the likes of Doug Davis and Randy Wolf, when Parra was a perfectly fine alternative.  The Brewers new pitching coach Rick Petersen has been a huge disappointment in his inaugural year, however reports indicated he’s done his best work with Parra.  This makes perfect sense as he’s a good fit with younger arms.  The left-hander struggled last season as he posted an awful 6.36 ERA.  Still he’s shown potential throughout his big league moments, while dealing with a shoulder issue last season.  He’s showed solid form with the Brewers this season making six starts.  Over his last four starts he’s allowed a total of just nine runs with a sturdy 29-to-9 strikeout to walk ratio. Now with a chance, Parra looks poised to deliver for the Brewers.  The value should Read more

Do MLB teams respond when managers get fired?

06.23.2010     11:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Do teams see a sudden or long term boost in productivity after a manager gets canned midseason? Florida, who up until this point had largely underachieved, just sent Fredi Gonzalez packing after a 34-36 start. Triple-A New Orleans manager Edwin Rodriguez was called up to serve as interim manager. Here are some of the teams that had midseason coaching changes over the last three years and how they fared.   Kansas City/Ned Yost - The Royals were 12-23 went they fired Trey Hillman. They went 9-5 during their next 15 games but have since fallen off to 17-20 under Yost's watch.

Baltimore/Juan Samuel - Samuel took over as interim manager for the fired Davie Trembley. The Orioles are 4-12 since Samuel took over and have yet to win back-to-back games.

Arizona/AJ Hinch - Hinch took over in early May of the Read more

Cardinals take a chance on veteran Jeff Suppan

06.14.2010     11:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There are reclamation projects and then there is Jeff Suppan. Suppan of course was an absolute disaster for the Brewers with a 7.84 ERA in 31 innings. He’s working on a sixth straight season with a progressively higher ERA. If you roll through his career stats, you’ll notice the last time he was halfway effective was with St. Louis back in 2006. The Cardinals were so appreciative of Suppan’s previous efforts that they decided to give him another shot. After a couple of positive bullpen sessions, the Cardinals plan on starting Suppan on Tuesday against Seattle and Ryan Rowland-Smith. The Cardinals are currently priced as a -160 betting favorite.

Pitching coach Dave Duncan, who has been responsible for igniting more than his fair share of castoff Read more
