Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: AFC News and Notes from Week 6

10.14.2013     07:09 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Welcome to Teddy’s unique look at the NFL. Teddy watches games all day on Sunday, typing furiously on his laptop while giving you the key info that the box scores and game recaps don’t necessarily have. This week: AFC thoughts and opinions from Week 6.

Denver Broncos - This offense does NOT take downfield shots; arguably the best 'dink and dunk' attack I've ever seen. The passing game is just lots and lots of well executed short passes thrown by a remarkably accurate quarterback. Even on a day where the Broncos were clearly a little bit flat in a legitimate sandwich spot against the worst team in the league, the Broncos still had five offensive touchdowns compared to only three punts and zero field goal attempts.

But this secondary is officially a problem area, even with Champ Bailey active today. We all saw what Tony Romo did to them last week. Here, Chad Henne was converting on 3rd and 25’s and Justin Blackmon was catching 14 balls for 190 yards. Rahim Moore was dropping sure interceptions, they were getting gashed on the ground, and the pass rush wasn't there. To make matters worse, Denver has a cluster injury Read more

NFL Gambling Preview: New England Patriots at Cincinnati Bengals

New England at Cincinnati
Sunday, 10 am PT - CBS
CRIS Opener:
Cincinnati pk O/U 45
CRIS Current: Cincinnati pk O/U 45
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Cincinnati -2.5
Marty Otto's Recommendation: Under

The Cincinnati Bengals suffered their second defeat of the season after dropping an absolute dogfight (no pun intended) to the Browns last week. They return home to the friendly confines of Paul Brown Stadium to take on the Patriots, hoping to hand New England its first loss of the year.

Cincinnati was held to just six points last week on the road and they committed two turnovers. Sloppy offense has been a major factor for this team the past two seasons despite a trip to the playoffs. Right now they are averaging a little more than two turnovers per game and seeing Andy Dalton miss what should be easy throws must be frustrating to the Bengals’ coaching staff.

Coming into this contest the boys in Read more

A “Total” Stalemate
Unders and Overs split right down the middle in Week 1 going 8-8 and it was more of the same in Week 2 with another 8-8 record. That 16 Overs and 16 Unders through the first two weeks of the season – give or take a few due depending on what sportsbook you play at. Those results suggest that oddsmakers are starting to catch up to how much the league has changed and how favorable everything is for offenses. Three games saw more than 60 points scored in Week 2 but on the flip side, there were also three games with fewer than 30 points scored. My best advice with totals is to disregard a lot of the trends floating around in the betting community – especially those that go back three or more years. The game has evolved and each one deserves its very own handicap with pace and situation two of many factors to consider.

Proof that Rookie Starting Quarterbacks Can Be Perfect
Raise your hand if you thought that E.J. Manuel and Geno Smith would be a combined 4-0 ATS through the first two weeks of the season. Manuel and Smith have had their flickers of solid play but neither has been consistent Read more

NFL Betting Recap: Ugly win and ATS loss for New England Patriots

It was a perfect storm for sloppiness. Thursday night games have been sluggish in the NFL to begin with because it’s hard to prepare for an opponent in just a few days after going to war on a Sunday. The Jets were starting a rookie quarterback. The Patriots have a lot of new receivers. Naturally, at halftime, it also started to rain!

New England 13, NY Jets 10 (+10.5)

NYJ: 318 yards, 4.5 per-play, 4 turnovers, 33% third downs

N.E.: 232 yards, 3.6 per-play, 0 turnovers, 22% third downs

Wow…232 yards for a Tom Brady offense and only 22% on third down conversions. The team did manage to avoid turnovers, which was the difference-maker.

Other Numbers

Rushing Yards: NY Jets 129, New England 54

Passing Stats: NY Jets 15-35-3-189, New England 19-39-0-178

Drive Points: NY Jets 3, New England 7

Stat Score: NY Jets 20, New England 13

NFL Gambling News: Buffalo's Manuel named Week 1 start vs. New England

New England -9.5 at Buffalo O/U 50.5

It turns Buffalo rookie quarterback EJ Manuel is ready to go for Week 1’s game against New England after having minor knee surgery. The Bills planned on starting Jeff Tuel which gave bettors an excuse to bet New England even more. Because of all of the uncertainty the line for this game has obviously bounced around. The Patriots opened -6.5 (CRIS) and were -7 for much of the summer. When Manuel went down and Tuel announced as the tentative starter, New England jumped to as high as -10.5. With Manuel back in the picture, the line was bet back to its current number of -9.5.

"When you play, and if you're going to play, you can't think about any injuries that you have, whether it's something you had a procedure on, or a sprained finger or something like that," he told the team's Read more

NFL Preseason Gambling: Giants to play starters vs. Patriots

New York Giants at New England -1 O/U 39

Tom Coughlin said his starters will see 12-15 snaps during Thursday's Week 1 preseason game at New England.

“I’d like to see some continuity and some execution, some performance,” Coughlin said. “I’d like to see us get the ball in the end zone [and] see us do well on third down. I’d like to see our passing game with our protection look like some type of an efficient operation. … I’d like to see progress. That’s really what I would like to see.”

“We’ve got to play better,” Manning said. “We’ve got to do better in the red zone and converting third downs. There is room for improvement.”

NFL Betting Alert: Bills to start Tuel Week1, bettors hammer Patriots

08.26.2013     10:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Well, this is a surprise. Buffalo plans on starting rookie quarterback Jeff Tuel in Week 1's game against New England. Needless to say, the betting markets have reacted. The Patriots are up to as high as -10.5 after opening -6.5 earlier this summer. Obviously Tuel doesn't have much of a pedigree, but there have been worse quarterbacks to start, win, and more importantly cover games in the NFL.

“Jeff has gotten most of the reps and you saw there are some things that we've got to do a better job getting him prepared for and he has to do a better job executing on the field,” Marrone said Saturday. “It is a concern and we knew that going in. I made that decision that we were going in with three quarterbacks knowing we had to get them all ready. And this is the situation that we're in and we have to deal with.”

NFL Gambling News: Bettors react to preseason results

08.26.2013     08:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With each team playing at least three preseason games, we're starting to see movement in the betting markets for Week 1 of the regular season. Let's check out some of the bigger line moves that have taken place over the last few weeks. Lines based on CRIS.

New England at Buffalo - The Patriots opened -6.5 and were bet up to -7. Following injuries to EJ Manuel (probable for Week 1) and Kevin Kolb (out indefinitely) a flood of money came in on New England; now -9.5.

Minnesota at Detroit - The Lions opened -3 way back in late May and were quickly bet up to -3.5 where is stood for most of the summer. The Vikings haven't look very good this preseason (0-3 SU/ATS) and as a result the Lions are now 4.5-point home favorites.

Oakland at Indianapolis - Like Minnesota, Oakland had its struggled this preseason (1-2 SU/ATS). Prior to Week 1 of the preseason the Colts moved from -6.5 to -7. Two weeks later they went to -7.5 and are now -8 (or -9.5-plus money teaser line).

Houston at San Diego - The Chargers may have won and covered last week's game against Arizona (24-7) but it Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Recap: Patriots, Ravens Stunned to Learn Dress Rehearsals Were Thursday!

It would have been bad enough if crappy teams from last year were playing like this. But, the first team offenses for the two teams who played in the AFC Championship Game last year had absolute debacles playing what was supposed to be “real” football Thursday night.

*The New England Patriots committed FOUR turnovers in the first half, and went 1 of 7 on third downs on their way to a 16-3 halftime deficit in Detroit. The score would have been worse, but the Lions were having their own issues…going 2 of 9 on third downs and missing a field goal try.

*The defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens turned the ball over THREE times in the first half. Two of those were returned for touchdowns. Baltimore’s special teams also allowed a punt return TD to the Carolina Panthers. The halftime score was 24-7, with 21 of Carolina’s points coming on those non-offensive scores.

Not a great way for these AFC powers to set the tone for Read more
