NCAA Final Four Gambling: Early bettors on the OVER for both games

04.01.2014     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Let's take a quick look at the early line movement for Saturday's two NCAA Tournament Final Four contests in Arlington, Texas. Florida opened -7 for its matchup vs. UConn but the game has since been bet down to -6.5/-6. Money towards the OVER has pushed the line from 125 to 126.5. The Huskies were a 4-point favorite in their non-covering 65-64 win over the Gators in Storrs back on December 2. Kentucky's meteoric rise in the betting markets continues as it opened -2 vs. Wisconsin. Another total seeing upwards pressure with leading market indicator CRIS currently offering 140 after an opener of 138.5.

NCAA Tournament Gambling: Wisconsin confident it can crack Baylor's zone

Baylor vs. Wisconsin -3 O/U 136.5

Wisconsin talks about its preparation for Baylor's 1-3-1 zone. The Badgers plan on doing the simple things – ball movements, shot fakes, and showing patience. The Bears held Nebraska and Creighton to a combined 9-of-45, 20% from three. Wisky meanwhile has knocked down 21-of-61, 41% from three this postseason.

"We always have a method," Ryan said, "and our method is deception if you can. Subtle deception. Ball-fakes. Shot-fakes.

"Every team I've ever seen that is successful uses them. So we've got to use them."

"You've just got to try and find some weak spots," Brust, a 38.9% three-point shooter this season, said of the Bears' zone. "You've got to be patient and work it around, try to get movement. Use shot-fakes, ball-fakes. Just keep working it until you get the good one, and when you get the good one you've got to knock it down.

NCAA Tournament Betting Free Play: Oregon Ducks vs. Wisconsin Badgers

Oregon +5.5 vs. Wisconsin O/U 145.5
Recommendation: Oregon

Oregon is clearly playing its best basketball of the season having won 9 of 10 heading into today's matchup vs. Wisconsin. Defensively and effort-wise the Ducks are finally performing up to their capabilities and coupled with an already stellar offense, this is all of a sudden a very complete outfit. They managed to hold BYU to under 1 point per possession the first round – only the fifth time all season that had happened to the Cougs. Wisconsin didn't have much trouble getting past American in its first round game but things won’t come as easy against the Ducks. The Badgers do a lot of things extremely well – particularly on offense – but defensively, they've been exposed on more than a few occasions. I go back to the Big Ten Tournament when the Badgers allowed Michigan State to run wild (83 points, 1.32 ppp). Also note that in their respective league play, Oregon was actually better (1.03 ppp allowed) than Wisconsin (1.05 ppp allowed) from a defensive efficiency standpoint. Obviously the Big Dance is going to bring out UW's best on the defensive end, but I think Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Initial thoughts on the West Region

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NCAA Tournament field is set and like most bettors, Sunday night is spent skimming through the first round matchups and forming initial thoughts and opinions. Keep in mind that a lot can change leading up to the start of the tournament – most notably where oddsmakers set the lines and where the betting markets drives said lines. For Monday's blog, I'll share my initial thoughts and opinions with our readers on all four regions.

West
As much as I love the Big Sky I can't even recall the last time they were competitive in the Big Dance. Weber State hasn't faced a defense even remotely close to that of Arizona. The closest was UCLA who trucked Weber, 83-60, in Los Angeles... I just got done looking at Gonzaga's resume and man, they didn't beat anyone. They lost to tournament teams Dayton, Kansas State, and Memphis and went 2-1 vs. a so-so BYU squad. That said, Mark Few vs. Travis Ford is a mismatch. I seem to remember Dana Altman and Oregon running OSU off the court in last year's tourney... Tough matchup for Oklahoma's young squad having to take on very experienced and talented North Dakota State. The Sooners losing in the first round of the Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Wisconsin eager to put defensive clamps on Minnesota

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota at Wisconsin 8.5 O/U 134

Wisconsin is looking for a little bit of defensive revenge tonight after allowing 81 (1.39 ppp) to Minnesota in Minneapolis. UW's defense has tightened up considerably of late, holding its last five opponents to 58, 65, 59, 63, and 58. The pace of most of those games was slow but it's a far cry from when the Badgers surrendered 70 or more in five straight back in January. The betting markets appear aware of this mini-transformation. Ken Pom has tonight's game totaled at 139, CRIS opened 136, and it has since been bet down to as low as 133.

"That was definitely a low point," Dekker said. "Third straight game where guys were coming off screens hitting shots, and us letting guys in the lane. Stuff that really bothers you. You go home and think about why did we let this

College Basketball Handicapping: Wisconsin and Illinois limp into tonight's contest

02.04.2014     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After starting the season 16-0, Wisconsin has dropped five of its last six. Head coach Bo Ryan isn't panicking but rather taking a it-is-what-it-is approach as the Badgers head to Illinois (0-7 SU run) tonight. The defense has played a little better of late but a year removed from leading the Big Ten in defensive efficiency (0.90 ppp allowed), Wisky currently ranks 9th at 1.04.

"You're always looking for things that can shake guys out of the positions that they're in," Ryan said. "But you can't all of a sudden re-make a team. When you can take five possessions out of several of those games and if they go the other way -- four possessions, two possessions -- you're sitting on the other side. So they still have to believe in what they're doing. They still have to believe that if they position themselves correctly, block out, take care of the ball, I can't fault them there.

"They're taking care of the ball. They're getting decent looks. A couple times we had to take a hurried look because of a

College Basketball Handicapping: DEFCON 2 alert for Ohio State?

01.23.2014     11:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The sky is falling in Columbus as Ohio State enters tonight's game against Illinois on a four-game losing streak. We seem to remember Louisville losing going through similar struggles last year before closing 19-1 and of course winning a National Championship. The Buckeyes don't look to be on the level though going through a mid-season swoon is pretty much unavoidable at the major conference level. Wisconsin was well on its way to a perfect season according to some and now the Badgers enter this weekend on a three-game slide.  Arizona’s regression is coming as well.

“I think honestly we need a couple to go down for us and regain a little momentum and a little confidence in our stroke,” Matta said. “It’s one of those deals that sometimes the best answer is make a couple and everything sort of takes care of itself.”

College Basketball Betting: Indiana tries to figure out Wisconsin

01.14.2014     07:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana head coach Tom Crean hasn't had much success vs. Bo Ryan and Wisconsin with an overall record of 3-14 and 0-10 at Indiana. Even if you eliminate Crean's first three years in Bloomington which were spent rebuilding the program, the Hoosiers have struggled vs. the Badgers. Last year, Wisconsin was able to control tempo with low scoring wins (both as underdogs) of 68-54 and 64-59. Note that in last year's meeting in Bloomington, the Badgers were 10.5-point underdogs. For tonight's game, they are currently 4.5-point road favorites.

College Football Gambling: South Carolina irked about underdog status vs. Wisconsin

Wisconsin -2 vs. South Carolina O/U 51

Looks like South Carolina got word it's an underdog to a Big Ten squad.

"I was a little surprised," Badgers linebacker Chris Borland said this week. "We're confident that we're going to win. It's just this huge SEC bias out there that they're a great conference, which they are. But, yeah, I was surprised."

"I don't want to sound like a cocky type of guy, but I just kind of take it as a slap in the face," Sutton said this week. "We as a team collectively, we work hard and we bust our butts at practice every day and listen to what the coaches tell us to do. For us to be the highly ranked team coming into this game and be labeled as the underdog, we kind of take it as a slap in the face as a team
