College Football Betting Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils at Stanford Cardinal

09.20.2013     07:01 AM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona State at Stanford
Saturday, 4 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Stanford -6.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Stanford -5.5 O/U 51
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -11
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Over 1st Half

It was good for the Sun Devils to play Wisconsin last week since the Badgers are a near mirror image of Stanford offensively. ASU’s defense had to deal with the power style rushing attack of Wisconsin and the subsequent play-action passing that goes with it. The problem is, Arizona State didn’t fare all that well at stopping the Badgers who rolled to 441 total yards on 7.0 per play which included 232 rushing yards and 7.2 per carry. That’s a major problem as Todd Graham’s team leaves the cozy confines of Sun Devil Stadium for the first time this season to play at Stanford in their PAC-12 opener.

Another fundamental problem will likely be the Stanford defense which Read more

College Football Betting Stock Watch: Wisconsin Badgers should thrive under Andersen

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Buy the Wisconsin Badgers – The Badgers have a new face of the program as Gary Andersen moves to Wisconsin from Utah State.  Andersen obviously took over for Bret Bielema, who left the program for the SEC and Arkansas.  The move for the Badgers figures to be a step forward on Saturdays when the games are actually being played.  Bielema did a tremendous job on the recruiting trail and the development of players; however he was largely questioned as an in-game tactician.  This shouldn’t be the case for Andersen who overachieved with his teams at Utah State.  The Badgers will now feature tremendous talent and the X and O’s/game management of Andersen.  Offensively, the Badgers are loaded this season and perhaps flying under the radar.  As always, the run game will be the focus with the three-headed monster of James White, Melvin Gordon and super freshman Corey Clement.  The offensive line is deep and strong, while big play receiver Jared Abbrederis is a true difference maker.  Quarterback Joel Stave doesn’t garner much praise but don’t sleep in him as he runs the play action fake as well as Read more

College Football Betting: Week 3 Injury Report

09.11.2013     11:59 AM         Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Louisiana Tech sophomore running back Kenneth Dixon enjoyed a banner freshman campaign, rushing for 1,194 yards and 27 touchdowns while averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Dixon sustained a knee injury in last week’s 27-14 win over Lamar and he’s questionable Thursday night vs. Tulane. Even if Dixon can’t go, I don’t know that bettors should downgrade Tech’s offense. Before Dixon became the starter last season, fellow freshman Tevin King started three games and rushed for 369 yards and five TDs. King, who averaged 8.0 ypc before suffering a season-ending injury, replaced Dixon when he went down last week. He responded by exploding for 182 yard rushing on 20 carries. As of early Wednesday, most books had the Bulldogs favored by -7.5 over the Green Wave.

TCU senior quarterback Casey Pachall is out until at least late October with a forearm injury. Therefore, sophomore signal caller Trevone Boykin will get the starting nod Thursday night at Texas Tech. Boykin started nine games as a redshirt freshman in 2012. He threw for 2,054 yards with a 15/10 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Boykin also rushed for 417 yards and three TDs. In relief of Pachall in Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Syracuse Orange

Penn State vs. Syracuse
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ESPN2 (Meadowlands)
CRIS Opener:
Penn State -7 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Penn State -9 O/U 51
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Penn State -7
Erin Rynning's Recommendation: Under

On the surface it was just another ho-hum year for the Penn State football program as it churned out an 8-4 record.  However, most bettors know that it could hardly be considered mundane – in fact it was truly magical.  The Lions were virtually left for dead and written off by the best of pundits and this was before they started last year with a 0-2 record.  After losses to Ohio and Virginia and low on depth Penn State hit an extra gear and won 8 of its next 10 games with most coming in the rugged Big Ten.  The season culminated with a rousing overtime win against the Wisconsin Badgers in Happy Valley.  Now the question will linger how does this program Read more

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin switches to 3-4 defense

08.13.2013     06:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Under first-year defensive coordinator Dave Aranda (Utah State), the Wisconsin Badgers will switch from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 this season.

"There are only a handful of teams in the NCAA that run a 3-4, so it will be hard for teams to imitate us in scout team. Offensive lines aren't really accustomed to blocking 3-4s, so I think that will be nice for us."

"We're so much more attack oriented," added DL Ethan Hemer. "We attack and come off the ball and we make offenses dictate to what we do instead of dictating to what offenses do."

College Football Gambling: Wisconsin's Andersen wants more from QB

07.10.2013     01:03 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting article about Wisconsin's quarterback situation and the plan of attack under first-year head coach Gary Andersen. Anderson is seeking more mobility from the position but it doesn't appear that Wisky will stray too far from the pro-style, power run game of old.

And you wonder if Stave, who does not possess a lot of mobility, will be the type of quarterback Andersen wants going forward. At Utah State the past two years, he started Chuckie Keeton after handing him the reins as a true freshman. Keeton ran for 618 yards and eight touchdowns last year for the Aggies.

College Football Betting: Wisconsin Badgers loaded with experience

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wisconsin boasts the most returning lettermen (83.87%) of any team BCS team according to Phil Steele. The Badgers will be playing under first-year head coach Gary Andersen (Utah State) this season. On the flip side, Big Ten foe Penn State ranks 125th (53.29%) out of 126. As noted by ESPN.com, last year, the top three BCS teams in terms of returning lettermen (Florida, Oregon, and Stanford) all earned BCS bowl berths. Notre Dame, however, ranked 121st, and played Alabama (104th) for the National Championship.

College Basketball Betting News and Notes: Conference Tournament Title Games

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New and notes for today’s conference tournament title games.

North Carolina's recent surge (8-2 SU/ATS) was in part due to a switch to a smaller lineup – right after losing to Miami 87-61 back on Feb. 9. Both of UNC's ACC Tournament games went OVER the total after it closed the regular season with six straight UNDERS.

“The smaller lineup has helped us,’’ Williams said Saturday after his team beat Maryland in the semifinals. “We’re a better basketball team. Is it a world-beater, is it the newest thing that ever happened, the best thing that ever happened? No. ... But [going small] was the best thing for this team.

Big Ten Tournament Preview

Michigan State cut down the nets last year in Banker’s Life Fieldhouse as the winner of the Big Ten Tournament. The Spartans were the No. 1 seed which marked the fifth time in the last six years the top team won.  This year’s event moves to the United Center in Chicago and the bullseye will fall on the Indiana Hoosiers who won the regular season crown and earned the No. 1 seed after knocking off Michigan last Sunday.  However, this is as deep a tournament field as I can remember since the inaugural event in 1998.  For much of the regular season you could throw a blanket over Indiana, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and even Wisconsin.  Keep in mind in late December Minnesota and Illinois were respectively ranked 11th and 12th in the country and then play in the No. 8 vs. No. 9 game tomorrow.

First Round Pick/Darkhorse:  Iowa
The Hawkeyes are a longshot to get to the Big Dance, but a rapidly improving basketball team, with a 20-11 record.  The Hawkeyes showed improvement down the stretch by winning six of their last eight games outright, Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Ohio State and Minnesota embarrassed on the road

02.18.2013     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

After getting caught flatfooted last Sunday in an early start against Indiana in Columbus, the Ohio State Buckeyes showed they learned NOTHING from the experience by coming out even more flat today at Wisconsin.

Early Wisconsin leads:

15:33 Wisconsin 12, Ohio State 6

14:08: Wisconsin 18, Ohio State 6

11:59: Wisconsin 20, Ohio State 6

9:22: Wisconsin 22, Ohio State 6

8:35 Wisconsin 27, Ohio State 8

3:46: Wisconsin 34, Ohio State 14

The Badgers had a couple of dry spells in there that were just begging Ohio State to get back in the game. Wasn’t going to happen. Ohio State wasn’t getting many good looks…and they were impatiently racing through bad looks because they could feel the game getting away from them.

Something to remember if Ohio State gets early tips in the Big 10 tournament or in the Big Dance. You might think two games is a small sample size. Well, okay…it’s obviously a Read more
