College Basketball Handicapping: Ohio State and Minnesota embarrassed on the road

02.18.2013     08:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

After getting caught flatfooted last Sunday in an early start against Indiana in Columbus, the Ohio State Buckeyes showed they learned NOTHING from the experience by coming out even more flat today at Wisconsin.

Early Wisconsin leads:

15:33 Wisconsin 12, Ohio State 6

14:08: Wisconsin 18, Ohio State 6

11:59: Wisconsin 20, Ohio State 6

9:22: Wisconsin 22, Ohio State 6

8:35 Wisconsin 27, Ohio State 8

3:46: Wisconsin 34, Ohio State 14

The Badgers had a couple of dry spells in there that were just begging Ohio State to get back in the game. Wasn’t going to happen. Ohio State wasn’t getting many good looks…and they were impatiently racing through bad looks because they could feel the game getting away from them.

Something to remember if Ohio State gets early tips in the Big 10 tournament or in the Big Dance. You might think two games is a small sample size. Well, okay…it’s obviously a Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: College Basketball's worst against the spread

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last week, I took a look at the best pointspread teams in all of college basketball, with the goal of assessing which teams were most likely to continue their ATS success down the stretch. This week, I’m taking the opposite approach; examining the very worst pointspread teams in college basketball. Why are they so bad against the spread? Will they continue to be overvalued as February rolls into March? Let’s find out!

The single worst pointspread team in all of college basketball this year has been IUPUI (Indiana-Purdue, Indianapolis); the type of team that only wiseguys bet on or against on a regular basis. At 5-17 ATS, no team in all of college basketball has suffered more pointspread defeats than the Jaguars this year. The Jaguars play in the Summit League, on the added board in college hoops – exclusive territory for sharps.

IUPUI has virtually no homecourt edge, covering just a single pointspread at home all year. They’ve been besieged with injuries and attrition; Read more

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Iowa Hawkeyes at Wisconsin Badgers

Iowa +9 at Wisconsin O/U 124.5
Recommendation: Iowa

My clients and I cashed a winner with Iowa as road underdogs at Ohio State last week, when the Hawkeyes rallied back from a 24-point deficit to make things verrrry interesting in the final minute in Columbus before falling short – despite an awful game from leading scorer Roy Devyn Marble.

We cashed another winner supporting the Hawkeyes on Super Bowl Sunday as they led for extended stretches of the second half, an easy wire-to-wire pointspread cover as double-digit underdogs.  And there’s absolutely no reason to think that the Hawkeyes won’t be able to cash another winning bet for us tonight as they travel to Madison to take on a Badgers team that the Hawkeyes have beaten in each of the last three meetings.

Iowa hasn’t lost a game by ten points or more since getting blown out at Michigan on January 6th, hanging tough with quality Big Ten foes like the Ohio Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: Wisconsin's crazy season from the charity stripe

Through nine Big Ten games, Wisconsin totals are 2-7 O/U. Last season in Big Ten play – with the help of two overtime games – the Badgers actually trended OVER the total at 11-7 O/U. The reason? There were a few but the key was free throws. Everyone is well aware UW’s horrific season from the free throw line (61.5% overall, 56.2% vs. Big Ten). But it’s also their inability to get to the line that is helping their games go under the total. That is until this occurred. Prior to the Illinois game, UW put extra emphasis in practice on trying to draw fouls. Amazingly, they went from not shooting a single free throw vs. Ohio State to 42 vs. Illinois.

Wisconsin rarely if ever strays away from a slow tempo and hard-nosed defense. But with totals routinely in the 115-125 range, free throws, or lack thereof can make a big difference. Take a look these numbers...

Rose Bowl Gamling Preview: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Stanford Cardinal

Rose Bowl - Pasadena, Calif.
Tuesday, January 1, 2 pm PT - ESPN
Wisconsin vs. Stanford
CRIS Opener:
Stanford -6 O/U 47.5
CRIS Current: Stanford -6 O/U 47
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -3.5

Wisconsin’s season might seem never ending to some.  They’ve gone through three starting quarterbacks, fired their offensive line coach after a couple of games, lost three games in overtime, and somehow played in the Big Ten title game, blowing out Nebraska 70-31.  Oh yeah, head coach Brett Bielema left for Arkansas shortly after their Big Ten title win, and now program granddaddy, Barry Alvarez, is back to coach the ‘Granddaddy of Them All’, the Rose Bowl.  Of course, Alvarez is the one with all the Rose Bowl wins for the Badgers in 1994, 1999 and 2000.  This will be the Badgers’ third straight trip to the Rose Bowl, while Bielema Read more

Capital One Bowl Gambling Preview: Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Georgia Bulldogs

Capital One Bowl - Orlando, Fla.
Tuesday, January 1, 10 am PT - ABC
Nebraska vs. Georgia
CRIS Opener:
Georgia -9.5 O/U 57
CRIS Current: Georgia -8.5 O/U 60
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Georgia -9.5

This matchup features a pair of teams that are clearly disappointed to be here.  Both Nebraska and Georgia were in position to play in BCS Bowl games, but both squads came up short in their respective conference championship games.  The way they came up short, however, was quite different.

Nebraska enjoyed a strong regular season, despite some ugly losses, like the 63-38 defeat they suffered in Columbus against Ohio State and their early season failure on the road at UCLA.  But after winning ten games, including an impressive road win at Michigan State and a wild, come-from-behind victory over Wisconsin at home, the Cornhuskers were thoroughly embarrassed and Read more

College Football Handicapping: Coaching changes for bowl-bound squads

12.06.2012     06:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some updates and links to all of the college football coaching changes to bowl-bound teams.

Arkansas State - Gus Malzahn will not coach in the GoDaddy.com Bowl after accepting the head gig at Auburn. ASU named defensive coordinator John Thompson interim head coach. The Red Wolves will have plenty of time to get over their loss with game day not until January 6.

Cincinnati - Butch Jones will make an announcement later today about his future. Plenty of rumors circulating that he is headed to Colorado.

Kent State - Darrell Hazell accepted the head job at Purdue but will stick around for Kent's bowl game against Arkansas State.

Purdue - Wide receiver coach Read more

Nebraska vs. Wisconsin
Saturday, 5 pm PT, Indianapolis – FOX
CRIS Opener:
Nebraska -3 O/U 49
CRIS Current: Nebraska -3 O/U 49
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Wisconsin pk

The Badgers are back in the Big Ten title game this season after beating Michigan State last year 42-39 and advancing to the Rose Bowl.  This year’s edition of Wisconsin football is a far cry from last year’s dream season with quarterback Russell Wilson.  In fact, the Badgers backed into the title game due to Ohio State and Penn State being ineligible.  Meanwhile, the Cornhuskers will be excited to play in the second ever Big Ten Championship.  The Huskers do have a history of playing in conference title games having reached the Big XII’s version as recently as 2009 and 2010.

The Badgers were expected to take a step back in 2012 and they certainly did.  Still, not many expected a 7-5 Read more

Nebraska -3 vs. Wisconsin O/U 49.5

Nebraska is expected to be without two starting linemen for Saturday’s Big Ten Championship against Wisconsin. Center Justin Jackson (ankle) and defensive tackle Blake Steinkuhler (knee) both started all 12 regular season games.

College Football Handicapping: Conference championship early line moves

11.26.2012     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Taking a quick look at the early lines moves for this weekend's college football conference championships.

Big East - Louisville at Rutgers (Thursday)
After both teams lost last weekend, Thursday's matchups becomes the de facto title game. Rutgers opened -2.5 but was quickly bet up to -3 across the board.

MAC - Northern Illinois vs. Kent State (Friday at Detroit)
No regular season meeting as both teams finished unblemished in league play. Combined the two squads were 20-4 against the spread. Interesting to see if the market pushes this game off the dead number of 5. CRIS opened NIU -5 but a small move towards Kent bumped it down to -4.5. The rest of the market has held firm at -5.

PAC-12 - UCLA at Stanford (Friday)
Both teams met last week as Stanford jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 35-17 victory. Note that the Bruins had already wrapped up the PAC-12 South prior to the contest – and are probably happy to be facing the Cardinal as oppose to Oregon. Stanford appears to be much improved since the move to quarterback Kevin Hogan who in four games has connected on 73% of Read more
