College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin to start Phillips at QB vs. Indiana

11.08.2012     12:17 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wisconsin -7 at Indiana O/U 55

Wisconsin announced that senior Curt Phillips will start at quarterback Saturday at Indiana. Phillips has had three knee surgeries and hasn't attempted a pass since 2009. He played three plays a few weeks back against Illinois.

"The perseverance and the battle he's been through to get to where he is today, kids rally around him extremely well," Bielema said. "He did a lot to get to where he is, and sometimes when you have that in somebody, it's very hard to deny them the opportunity to have success.

"Curt's a runner. He's a guy that can move the football around a little bit with his arm and with his feet."

College Football Gambling: Wisconsin loses quarterback Stave to injury

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Just when it looked like Wisconsin was morphing from mediocre to good, the Badgers cough up last week's home game against Michigan State and lose quarterback Joel Stave to a season-ending injury. So now the Badgers have two weeks to try to wash the suck off of former starter Danny O'Brien. Back-up Curt Phillips is also expected to see time under center during practice. Baring a complete meltdown, the Badgers (6-3, 3-2) will stumble into the Big Ten Championship thanks to postseason bans to fellow Leaders Division foes Ohio State and Penn State.

College Football Betting: If you need a job and can say hike, give Maryland a call

UPDATE

Georgia Tech -7 at Maryland

In Spinal Tap drummer-like fashion, Maryland has now lost four starting quarterbacks this season due to injury. The team may be forced to play a linebacker or tight end under center against Georgia Tech. If the Terps were smart, they'd borrow former starter and current Wisconsin back-up Danny O'Brien this week while the Badgers enjoy their bye. Considering how lost O'Brien looked in last week's loss to Michigan State, Wisconsin would probably be more than willing. To be 4-4 is quite the accomplishment for Randy Edsall's group though upcoming games against Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina put the postseason is serious doubt. Read more

College Football Gambling Preview: South Carolina Gamecocks at Kentucky Wildcats

South Carolina at Kentucky
Andrew Lange's Recommendation:
Kentucky
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
South Carolina -20 O/U 47
CRIS Current: South Carolina -20.5 O/U 49.5
Rob Veno Power Rating: South Carolina -18

It is hard not to like what South Carolina has done thus far. They opened the season with a tough road win at Vanderbilt and then outscored their last three opponents 128-26. As a result, their stock in the betting markets has skyrocketed. Go back to last year and the Gamecocks were laying this identical price against Kentucky with the game obviously taking place in Columbia. SC ended up crushing 54-3 but Kentucky was simply awful with six turnovers and only 96 yards (and Morgan Newton at QB). Kentucky may be weak, but that type out outcome is unlikely to occur again on Saturday.

While they were able to rack up three big wins at home, let’s not forget that the Read more

CRIS Opener:
Georgia -15.5 O/U 60.5
CRIS Current: Georgia -14 O/U 58
Rob Veno Power Rating: Georgia -14

Two weeks ago this looked like it would be a great matchup between with two evenly matched SEC East teams. But that was before the wheels fell off the Tennessee defense in the second half of its 37-20 loss to Florida. The Vols struggled again at home last week against Akron, trailing 23-20 late in the second quarter before blowing out the Zips in the second half in route to a 49-26 win. Questions definitely remain about the Vols’ defense, while Georgia has answered questions with its stop unit. The Bulldogs held Vandy to three points last week in their rout of the Commodores and put the clamps on Missouri back in Week 2. Georgia also gets two of its best defenders back this week as Alec Ogletree and Read more

CRIS Opener:
Atlanta -7 O/U 50
CRIS Current: Atlanta -7 O/U 48.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Atlanta -7.5

Carolina (1-2) will have extra time to get ready for this matchup after losing in ugly fashion to the New York Giants, 36-7, last Thursday.  Keep in mind; the Panthers were open for a letdown after beating nemesis New Orleans just four days earlier.  Carolina’s defense has been especially troubling.  The unit was expected to show vast improvement after massive injuries in 2011.  This hasn’t been the case as they’ve struggled at times against all three opponents thus far.  The offense is facing similar questions, while teammates openly called out quarterback Cam Newton for his sulking ways after the Giants game.  It’s only Week 4, but this is a pivotal game for Carolina’s Read more

CRIS Current: Nebraska -11.5 O/U 50.5
Rob Veno’s Power Rating: Nebraska -9.5

Wisconsin enters the start of Big Ten play with more questions than answers. They are 3-1 SU but none of their victories could be considered impressive. The Badgers barely got past FCS Northern Iowa at home, 26-21, lost outright at Oregon State, 10-7, as 6-point chalk, and notched two non-spread covering wins in rather lethargic fashion against Utah State and UTEP. Add it all up and Wisconsin is a money-burning 0-4 ATS. But the respect this team once had in the betting markets has clearly dissipated with the Badgers now catching double-digits for their showdown against the Cornhuskers.

A big key for Wisconsin is the health of running back Montee Ball who suffered a head Read more

College Football Gambling: Wisconsin benches QB O'Brien, frosh to start vs. UTEP

UTEP at Wisconsin -17.5 O/U 48.5

We knew Wisconsin quarterback Danny O'Brien wasn't going to duplicate Russell Wilson's success but three games into the season, O'Brien already finds himself on the bench. The Badgers will start freshman Joel Stave against UTEP on Saturday. Stave replaced O'Brien in last week's game against Utah State after O'Brien lost a fumble.

"I think any of the quarterbacks would admit that Joel has the best arm out of all of them," Bielema said. "He's got great composure. . . . Joel's pretty educated.

"Now, obviously he's only got one half under his belt as a quarterback that's out there on the field. So that's the part that's the unknown."

College Football Betting Stock Watch: Beware of inflated prices with Wisconsin

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Sell the Wisconsin Badgers – The Badgers have enjoyed storybook seasons the last two years with back-to-back Rose Bowl berths.  Yes, 2012 set’s up as another banner year but this squad will without question be inflated in the betting markets.  It would be near impossible this season for the Badgers to match their offensive production from the previous two seasons.  Keep in mind 2010 and 2011 were record breaking years, as they averaged an amazing 44.1 and 41.5 points per game.  This year, they’ll need to replace six offensive starters including all-world quarterback Russell Wilson.  With Wilson winning the starting quarterback job for the Seattle Seahawks as a rookie it should be a telltale sign of his value.  In addition, the Badgers also lost respected offensive coordinator Paul Chryst who took the head coaching job at Pittsburgh.  Yes, the Badgers will feature running back Montee Ball and will have Maryland transfer Danny O’Brien as their quarterback, but the scoring could easily be down 10+ points per contest.  Defensively, the Badgers will be sound with a sturdy front seven; however secondary Read more

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin's O'Brien named starting quarterback

08.20.2012     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For the second consecutive year, Wisconsin will go with a graduate transfer at quarterback.  Danny O'Brien, who spent two seasons at Maryland, was named Week 1's starter. O'Brien earned ACC Rookie of the Year in 2010 (2,438 yards, 22 TDs, 8 INTs) before struggling under head coach Randy Edsall. UW head coach Bret Bielema mentioned O'Brien's ability to quickly learn the system was the deciding factor. It'll be a tall order for O'Brien to duplicate Russell Wilson's numbers but he's more than capable and walks into a very good situation in Madison.

“Danny did some nice things, just like the other two did at times,” Bielema said. “I think the part Danny brings to the table is he learns very quickly. ... The thing that shows with Danny probably is the fact he’s started a number of games and that preparation factor, you can kind of see it.”
