Las Vegas Strip welcomes new casino and sportsbook

06.18.2014     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Strip is getting a new casino as the SLS Las Vegas is scheduled to open its doors on Saturday, August 23. It's located on the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard South and Sahara Avenue. William Hill will operate the SLS's sportsbook.

“It’s such an honor to be part of a dedicated team working around the clock to help bring our vision to life,” said Rob Oseland, president and COO of SLS Las Vegas. “Today we’re turning on our lights and the countdown officially begins as we prepare to welcome guests at SLS Las Vegas one week ahead of schedule.”

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: Golden Nugget's College Football Games of the Year

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The sportsbetting world here in Las Vegas has shifted into full summer mode over the past week.  The NBA and NHL Finals are now in the rear view mirror with the Spurs and Kings crowned as champions, leaving a modest sportsbetting void even in the midst of the World Cup.

Once the Finals end, my focus shifts towards the upcoming football season, and I’m certainly not alone in that regard.  Last week I wrote about NFL Season Win totals that have begun to proliferate in Las Vegas (still lagging behind offshore, though).  Part 2 of that article will come next week in this space.

This past Friday, we saw another clear sign that football is just around the corner, as the Golden Nugget released their lines on 200 College Football Games of the Year.  These GOY pointspreads were posted on about 10-15 high profile marquee games a week, beginning with the Texas A&M-South Carolina and Boise State-Ole Miss showdowns on Thursday, August 28th, while running through the likes of Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Kansas State-Baylor and Army-Navy in December.

This is the eighth consecutive year that the Nugget has been the first place in Vegas Read more

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NFC Season Over/Under Win "morphers"

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I’ve been waiting patiently for the NFL Season Wins market to mature, but that doesn’t happen quickly here in June.  Most of the notable offshores have not posted Over/Under win totals yet, leaving Vegas as the only active market right now. As a result, all the numbers used in this article are from right here in Sin City.

Of the 32 NFL teams, only 11 have Over/Under win totals that are different from their final record last year by two games or more.  In other words, the markets are telling us to expect ‘more of the same’ from 21 of the 32 teams in the league.

In my Vegas Wiseguy Report article over the next two weeks, I’m going to focus on those eleven teams that are expected to morph positively or negatively from last year.  The goal of this discussion is to focus on why these particular teams are expected to improve or decline significantly compared to last year.  I’ll do that by looking at how the broader market conditions affect the numbers.  What do the markets fixate upon?  What do they largely ignore?  Read on to find out.

This week’s focus will be on the seven NFC Read more

Gambling Update: Dana White reportedly crushed The Palms Casino again

06.03.2014     02:12 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Meathead and alleged savvy gambler Dana White is back in the news. In 2012, White had his credit line at The Palms cut in half. The casino is apparent back to placing limits on White after he recently won $2 million over three-month span. He was later quoted as saying Caesars is the only place left in Las Vegas that won't "mess around with limits."

Group of bros cash in on UConn's National Championship

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cool story on 12 UConn fans who won $60K on a futures bet at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Casino. The best part was they actually shopped around. Las Vegas sportsbooks have notoriously poor futures odds and after seeing 25-1 at Caesars they found 50-1 at the Hard Rock.

“The plan was if we won, we’d come back to Vegas to pick up the money and have a ridiculous Memorial Day weekend,” said Harrison Fuchs, the de facto leader of the big winners. “We all thought it was a long shot, but here we are.”

The cure for low voter turnout is of course gambling

05.27.2014     07:38 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Jimmy Vaccaro says that the cure for low voter turnout is to allow people to gamble on the outcome.

"Let me tell you something. If you could bet on the election, you're gonna vote," Vaccaro said.

"Why not? It's the first time you can actually have a say in the outcome of your money," he said.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Preseason AFC Betting News and Notes

Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The LVH Superbook posted their NFL Season Win totals last weekend.  Cantor sportsbooks (CG Technology) have had season win totals posted for months.  Many other books both here in Vegas and offshore have posted season win totals, Week 1 pointspreads and Game of the Year pointspreads.  Most books that haven’t posted NFL numbers yet plan to do so in the near future.  The NFL offseason, at least for sports bettors, is essentially over.  Numbers are up, and they’re moving!

My first step in assessing the upcoming NFL season begins with a thorough look back at last year.  Every team’s power rating is set, in large part, based on where they finished the previous campaign.  Obviously, adjustments are made for injuries, luck, offseason improvements or declines, coaching changes and the like, but those base power rating numbers factor in what happened in 2013 very heavily.

In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Report, I’ll pass along a tidbit or two from each of the 16 AFC teams in regards to last year.  My focus is on things that are NOT likely to repeat the same way in 2014.  I’ll offer similar Read more

Here's a good reason why you shouldn't mail in a winning sports betting ticket

05.23.2014     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
Good article from Betting Talk on a Nevada postal worker who stole a handful of winning sports betting tickets worth nearly $10K. This apparently isn't the first time a mailman has tried to pull off the stunt.

“The NGC has been very apologetic and assured me that I would receive my money back,” said Fortuna, who added that this was the first time he’s ever had an issue mailing in winning tickets.

Nevada pushes for gambling on political elections

Seems like they've been talking about this for years but Nevada appears close to allowing bettors to wager on political elections.

"It's already going on," Segerblom said. Nevada could make money as the only state to permit the betting on presidential and other federal races. It would not apply to local state races.

Eating a hot dog in Las Vegas is about to get a lot cooler

05.21.2014     07:11 AM     Printer Friendly
If you've ever been to Chicago and drank more than five beers in a sitting there is a distinct possibility you closed out your night at the famed Weiner's Circle. For those not in the know, it is hole-in-the-wall hot dog stand south of Wrigley Field that caters to drunk idiots by swearing at them and serving great food. The good news is Weiner's Circle is branching out with three new locations scheduled to open this summer in Las Vegas. Hopefully they will have a similar ambience to that of the Chicago location. FYI, the video is NSFW.
