Oakland Raiders in Las Vegas is probably not going to happen but sounds pretty damn awesome

01.29.2016     07:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Oakland Raiders in Las Vegas? A Sheldon Adelson funded domed stadium within spitting distance of The Strip? The red hue of Roger Goodell's face when he hears about this!

"Projects like this need a lot of very, very strong leadership, a lot of conviction, a lot of focus and great resources,'' said Craig Cavileer of Majestic Realty, the project's development partner. "Certainly, Sheldon and his team have proved time and time again that they produce great projects."

College Football Handicapping: Public prefers Alabama over Clemson

01.11.2016     08:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to reports, the action in Las Vegas is fairly balanced on tonight's College Football Playoff National Championship between underdog Clemson and favorite Alabama. Around 60% of the "public money" is on the Crimson Tide. Most sportsbooks appear to be hoping for an Alabama straight up win but Clemson pointspread cover. Opinion remains split with most offshore shops showing Alabama -6.5 while Vegas remains -7.

"Every time we take a big bet on one side," a Caesars sportsbook manager said, "we get another to balance it out on the other."

NFL Betting News: Las Vegas sportsbooks breathe sign of relief after Ravens' MNF win

12.01.2015     06:21 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Funny how these things tend to work out. Heading into last night's Baltimore-Cleveland game, a few Las Vegas sportsbooks were reporting a comical imbalance of money on the Browns. Cleveland opened at a pick 'em offshore and -1.5 in Las Vegas and closed -6. The Ravens of course blocked the potential game winning field goal and took it to the house for outright win. Perhaps a lesson that when someone's reporting 99% of the action is one side, it's probably wise to take a gander at the team that has “no chance.”

"It'll easily be the biggest Monday night decision of the year," Rood said. "It's just a huge, huge decision."

"We have a ton of money on Cleveland," Simbal said Sunday night. "In fact, 99.3 percent of the money is on Cleveland so far."

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: NFL teams starting to change their stripes

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s Week 12 already. Thanksgiving is upon us, with the holiday season right behind it.  All the NFL Bye weeks are in the rear view mirror now, with every team still having exactly six games remaining in the regular season.  We’re seeing numerous ‘morphs’ around the league; teams that have changed their stripes rather dramatically over the course of the last month.

Some of those morphs are duly noted by the betting markets.  For example, the 3-7 Cowboys with a healthy Tony Romo are favored over the 10-0 Panthers on Thanksgiving Day, with the betting markets reacting to the Cowboys positive showing with Tony Romo back behind center this past Sunday.  The markets certainly aren’t sleeping on Dallas right now!

But what about the Lions, winners of two straight since their woeful 1-7 start?  Or the Falcons, now just 1-4 in their last five games; struggling on both sides of the football?  The Jets aren’t the same team now that they were a month ago, especially if the injuries to shutdown corner Darrelle Revis and Pro Bowl caliber center Nick Mangold don’t heal quickly.  Should we Read more

Las Vegas sportsbooks withstand Holm-Rousey upset thanks to NFL underdogs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to reports it was a wild weekend for Las Vegas sportsbooks with Holly Holm knocking out Ronda Rousey and nearly every NFL underdog covering on Sunday.

"At one point, we were approaching six digits on our loss," SuperBook assistant manager Ed Salmons said. "We had some late money on the favorite, which essentially made us a small loser on that fight. But with what we could have lost at one point, it felt like a big winner."

Westgate Superbook nears completion

11.09.2015     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Las Vegas' Westgate Superbook is still working on various renovations and upgrades including 220 feet worth of big screen TVs.

“It’s the biggest screen of this type you’ll see inside, anywhere,” Kornegay says, looking across the Superbook at a digital image of a rushing attempt by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton. “This is part of the plan to not only have the biggest sports book in Las Vegas but the best.”

“This was the owner’s idea, right from the start,” Kornegay said. “During his first walk-through, he realized the book hadn’t been touched in a really long time.”

Son of foreign dignitary welches on Las Vegas casino debt

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Amazing that those who actually have money are often times the ones not willing to settle up on gambling debts. Take the son of France's foreign minister, Thomas Fabius. This dude rang up well over a million in debt as various Las Vegas casinos and wrote a bunch of bad checks to try to cover his losses. According to Clark County, if he shows his face on U.S. soil, he'll be arrested.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: Analyzing bye-less College Football teams

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seventeen college football teams enter November without having had a single bye week since the start of the season and without a bye this coming week.  Those teams are Arizona, Ball State, Boston College, Colorado, UConn, Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Hawaii, Louisiana Tech, Miami-Ohio, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas Tech, Western Kentucky, Wisconsin and Wyoming.  Two more teams, North Texas and UMass, haven’t had byes since Week 1; teams that started their seasons a week late, but haven’t had a break since.  Is there anything unique or different about these non-bye squads?  Read on to find out.

Five of the 17 teams listed above don’t have any bye weeks at all.  Florida International, Miami-Ohio, Hawaii (with their 13 game schedule!), Arizona and Colorado will finish the season without a break.  Note that none of those five are going to play in a conference championship game, and only two (Arizona and FIU) have any realistic shot to make a bowl game.  Bye-less teams don’t tend to be very successful.  Most importantly for our purposes, they also don’t tend to cover many pointspreads Read more
