March Madness just as big as Super Bowl for Las Vegas bettors

03.21.2012     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from Sports Illustrated on how Las Vegas' oddsmakers view March Madness.

“Four days together,” says Todd Fuhrman, senior race and sports book analyst at Caesar’s Palace, “it’s as big as the Super Bowl for Las Vegas.”

“Yeah, I would say as big as the Super Bowl,” says Jay Kornegay, vice president, race & sports operations at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino — LVH, as it is now known.

“It’s hard to compare, but it’s probably as big as the Super Bowl,” says Ed Malinowski, director of race & sports book at Stratosphere Casino.

“Bigger than the Super Bowl,” says Johnny Avello, executive director, race & sports operations at the Wynn.

CBI Tournament Gambling Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Butler Bulldogs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh +1 at Butler O/U 127.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

I’ll buck the line move here which probably had everything to do with perceived line value when it opened. It’s true that Pittsburgh was a shell of its former self during the regular season, but now things have changed. Head coach Jamie Dixon has kept an upbeat mantra all season and after finally practicing with his full contingent of players for the very first time last week, Pitt looks more like the team we all expected. Through the first two rounds of this CBI Tournament, the Panthers have obliterated their foes by an average score of 81.5-62.0. Their FG% shooting margin of +17.5% (53.6%-39.1%) in those games is excessively good. The Panthers have the look of a hot and confident team right now which by the way, will be seeking revenge tonight for last year’s closing 1.4 seconds of NCAA Tournament debacle. Butler got the win that that night en-route to their NCAA Championship Read more

CBI Tournament Betting Pick: Washington State Cougars at Oregon State Beavers

Washington State at Oregon State -7 O/U 149
Recommendation: Over

Don't think for a minute that just because Washington State and Oregon State are meeting for a fourth time and are "familiar" with one another that we are all of a sudden going to see a defensive scrum. Check last night's Oregon-Washington game. Those two teams know each other pretty well and the game landed 176 – nearly 23 points over the closing total. Earlier this week, Oregon State hung 101 on TCU. The Horned Frogs were pretty poor on offense (41.9% FG, 26.7% 3-pt, 55.0% FT) yet still managed to get to 81 points. Washington State ran wild in its CBI opener; an 89-75 win at San Francisco. And I put little stock in their last game; a 61-41 win over slow paced and offensively deficient Wyoming. During the regular season, the Beavers and Cougars produced games scores of 157 and 156. During the conference tournament – which at the time was the most meaningful game Read more

NIT Handicapping: Against the Spread News and Notes 3-20-2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
A pair of NIT games on ESPN tonight and here are some news and notes regarding the teams and match-ups.

UMass at Drexel -8 O/U 141
Defensive dominator Drexel Dragons are 15-0 at home this season under head coach Bruiser Flint, who coached UMass 11 years ago. He has his best Drexel team and most wins ever as a college coach (29-6). The Dragons have outstanding guard play and a dominating defense that allows just 55 ppg on 39% shooting including 29% from the arch. But UMass (24-11) is on fire with a pair of upsets over higher seeds and they will push the ball and pressure full court. The Minutemen average 77 ppg and have a size and strength advantage in the interior. Contrast in styles for two teams having their best seasons under current coaches with the winner advancing to NIT semi-finals at Madison Square Garden.

Oregon at Washington -5 O/U 155
Third meeting this season for PAC-12 rivals with both teams winning big on their home court. Washington (23-10) is 14-2 at home this season and 64-6 at Bank of American Arena the last 4+ years. But Oregon (24-9) is playing its best ball under first-year coach Dana Altman. The Read more

NIT Betting Free Play: UMass Minutemen at Drexel Dragons

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UMass at Drexel -6 O/U 141
Recommendation: Over

Something has to give with tonight's UMass-Drexel total which opened at 141. The Dragons' highest total this season came way back in November against Norfolk State (134.5) and that went UNDER by 17 points. The other was the 130.5 against Niagara which landed 129. In terms of actually producing over 141 points, Drexel (and opposing teams) accomplished the feat just four times this season. But when you take into account who the Dragons played this season, the results aren't surprising. The Colonial League features only two teams (George Mason and Delaware) that are active in pushing the pace. Beyond that, Drexel faced Rider and Niagara, two teams out of the MAAC that are fairly up-tempo. Obviously Drexel doesn't want to get into a track meet but I've watched UMass play enough to know that even the slowest of teams can't help but routinely find open looks early in the shot clock. The Minutemen are relentless and married to the concept of playing at an up-tempo pace regardless of the opponent. Also note that despite playing in a defensive-minded conference, Drexel led the league in offensive efficiency at Read more
