NCAAF Betting Update: Maryland goes with true frosh at quarterback

08.22.2012     06:52 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Maryland head coach Randy Edsall announced that true frosh Perry Hills will be the team's Week 1 starter.

“I’ve been very impressed with just how he’s handled himself and the poise and the composure and the command that he’s handling that first offense with,” Edsall said of Hills. “Here’s a guy that’s a freshman, and he’s telling those guys, ‘C’mon let’s go. Get set. Get down.’ All those things.”

College Football Betting: Tennessee Volunteers Season Over/Under Wins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I haven’t made up my mind yet on Tennessee. On one hand you see two “wheelhouse” attributes that indicate improvement is on the way – head coach in his third year and 19 returning starters. But on the other hand, I remain leery that Derek Dooley is capable of taking the team/program to new heights and whether or not they have enough talent to help him in his efforts.  But beyond the coaching and personnel, what I’m most intrigued with is their season over/under win total.

Pinnacle doesn’t like to move its raw number on these totals, but instead adjusts the juice. Two prime examples of this are Ole Miss and Kentucky. Both schools opened 5.5 wins and have seen nearly all of the money come in on the UNDER. The Rebels are currently 5.5un-487 while the Wildcats are 5.5un-377. Do a little bit of reading on both teams and a quick glance at the schedule, and on the surface it appears very unlikely either team will reach six wins – they might not combine for six wins! But for some bettors, chasing a line and tying up three or four units until December to win one unit isn’t worth it. Not to mention, no matter how Read more

College Football Betting: Colorado's offense expected to be more dynamic

08.21.2012     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It was tough sledding offensively for Colorado during head coach Jon Embree's first season. The Buffaloes were one of only 12 teams than failed to average 20 points per game. According to offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, there was an adjustment period for the new pro-style format and only "35-40 percent" of the offense was used in 2011.

"Obviously we've done a little studying with different offenses and different people across the country, but you've always got to be willing to experiment with things and be willing to try something new. Just because you've done it a certain way your whole entire life doesn't mean you can't change for the better."

"Here is what you've got to understand, we've got a lot of guys who played in that offense a year ago, returning players," Bieniemy said. "Those guys have done a great job of teaching these kids. They did all their own little stuff and these kids are a lot further along than where we were a year ago. They've Read more

College Football Betting Alert: South Carolina now -7.5 (CRIS) at Vanderbilt

08.20.2012     11:25 AM     Printer Friendly
Money continues to come in on the South Carolina Gamecocks for their season opener against Vanderbilt (Aug. 30). CRIS opened SC -4 back on August 2 and was immediately bet up to -6.5. After some two-way action over the last two weeks there was another pro-SC move earlier today with the Gamecocks climbing to -7.5 at CRIS. The rest of the offshore world remains at -7 though Pinnacle and Heritage have their juice shaded towards the road favorite.

In last year’s meeting, South Carolina (-14.5) got the spread covering win, 21-3. They outgained the Commodores by nearly 300 yards. 2010 yielded a similar result as SC (+260 total yards) got the cover (-11.5) in a 21-7 victory. Four of the last five meetings have gone under the total with one push.

College Football Handicapping: Wisconsin's O'Brien named starting quarterback

08.20.2012     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
For the second consecutive year, Wisconsin will go with a graduate transfer at quarterback.  Danny O'Brien, who spent two seasons at Maryland, was named Week 1's starter. O'Brien earned ACC Rookie of the Year in 2010 (2,438 yards, 22 TDs, 8 INTs) before struggling under head coach Randy Edsall. UW head coach Bret Bielema mentioned O'Brien's ability to quickly learn the system was the deciding factor. It'll be a tall order for O'Brien to duplicate Russell Wilson's numbers but he's more than capable and walks into a very good situation in Madison.

“Danny did some nice things, just like the other two did at times,” Bielema said. “I think the part Danny brings to the table is he learns very quickly. ... The thing that shows with Danny probably is the fact he’s started a number of games and that preparation factor, you can kind of see it.”

College Football Gambling: Fast tempo could spell disaster for Ole Miss

08.20.2012     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It seems like every college football team in the country wants to run some type of up-tempo, spread option offense that picks up big chunks of yards and wears down the opposition. For some, that philosophy has worked wonders, while for others, it simply doesn’t pan out. The key to running that type of offense is talent. In the case of Ole Miss, there is some talent, but we question whether there is enough for first-year head coach Hugh Freeze’s up-tempo offense to work in the SEC. It is difficult for opposing teams to score without the ball, but when you speed up the game against superior defenses, you are asking for not only a lot of three-and-outs but three-and-outs that don’t chew up any clock. In the case of the Rebels, putting your defense on the field any more than it has to be is inviting a lot of blowout losses. Note that Ole Miss ranked 117th out of 120 teams in points per play last year (0.204).

NCAAF Handicapping: West Virignia expected to play even more up-tempo

08.20.2012     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
West Virginia is hoping for even more tempo and pace to its offense in head coach Dana Holgorsen's second season. Last year, the Mountaineers averaged just under 74 plays per game. They ranked 19th nationally in points per play at 0.476. Note that the Big XII will feature five teams who ranked in the top 25 in points per play in 2011: Oklahoma State (1st), Baylor (9th), Oklahoma (17th), West Virginia and Kansas State (21). Nine of WVU's 13 games went over the total last year.

“I have never installed this offense to where you look back at the end of the first year and are like, ‘We’re good that year.’ You always look back and it’s like, ‘How did we win a game?’” offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. “I don’t think (our tempo) necessarily got to where we wanted it to.”

“I think our tempo is going to be extreme this year between really fast and slowing it down and really fast and slowing it down,” Dawson said. “We should be able to have three or four different tempos, Read more

College Football Betting: Michigan State focused on improving run game

08.20.2012     06:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With an experienced offensive line and the departure of quarterback Kirk Cousins, Michigan State is expected to feature more of a run-first offense this year. The Spartans attempted the second fewest run plays in the Big Ten behind Iowa in 2011. They also finished 78th nationally in rushing yards per game (137.9). Andrew Maxwell was named MSU's Week 1 starting quarterback.

"The Big Ten has always historically been about running the football," Michigan State offensive line coach Mark Staten said. "So, you play the cards you're dealt. If you have the luxury of having a senior quarterback, some real good receivers, some good tight ends, it's OK to zip things around. Even if you have a guy who's the quality of the guy starting out for us (Andrew Maxwell), it's OK to zip it around. But at the end of the game, when you need that three yards, you want to be able to count on one another to run that ball."
