College Football Gambling Update: Ohio State taking mid-week title game money

01.07.2015     01:30 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Still a few days out from college football's title game between Ohio State and Oregon. In reaction to both semifinal matchups going over the total, we've seen more upward pressure with the current number at 75/75.5 after opening 72.5 at Pinnacle and 74 at CRIS. And after sitting on the Ducks -7 for a few days we've seen a slow but steady flow of Buckeyes money with the line down to -6 offshore and -6.5 in Las Vegas. Sportsmemo handicapper Rob Veno has his power rating set at -7.5.

Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wiseguy Report: College Football Bowl Game Bad Beats

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Without a college football playoff this year, we probably would have seen the two losers of the semi-final games (Florida State and Alabama) face off for the national title, instead of the Oregon-Ohio State matchup that we are actually going to see next Monday.  But while the talking heads on TV fixate on the upcoming marquee matchup, there is room for the savvy ‘capper to look back on what just happened over the past three weeks of bowl action in an effort to draw lessons that will help in the future.

Throughout the last few weeks, there were some bad beats that rivaled the toughest beats that we’ve seen in college football all year.  Three stand out in particular; Houston’s late rally to beat Pitt, Michigan State’s late rally to beat Baylor and Central Michigan’s late rally to cover against Western Kentucky.

Of the three, the Michigan State comeback in the Cotton Bowl was the most likely to occur, despite the Spartans clear deficiencies in the ballgame.  Mark Dantonio’s squad allowed 603 passing yards, but they got the stops they needed during crunch time.  Baylor missed a 46 yard field goal at the Read more

College Football Gambling: Oregon Ducks open -7 vs. Ohio State Buckeyes

01.02.2015     11:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Oregon Ducks opened as a 7-point favorite over Ohio State for next week's college football championship in Dallas. That's where they currently stand both offshore and in Las Vegas with the exception of Pinnacle which has the Ducks -6.5 (-115). The total has seen upward pressure from 72 to as high as 74.5. This after both semifinal contests went flying over the total. Sportsmemo handicapper Rob Veno's Power Ratings show Oregon to be -7.5. Sagarin meanwhile has the game as a virtual pick 'em with Ohio State 0.43 ahead of Oregon.

Cactus Bowl Betting Preview: Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Washington Huskies

Cactus Bowl - Tempe, Ariz.
Oklahoma State vs. Washington
Friday, January 2, 7:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Washington -5 O/U 56
CRIS Current: Washington -6.5 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Washington -4.5

Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy cost me a bet in late November when he surprisingly pulled the redshirt off QB Mason Rudolph with only two games remaining in the season.  Rudolph was their heralded recruit, a top 20 QB coming out of high school and a HUGE upgrade over backup Daxx Garman who has been starting since Week 2 following the season ending injury to junior JT Walsh.

The Cowboys season long stats are going to show that they can’t throw the football very well and have a very limited offense.  But if you watched Rudolph’s first two collegiate starts, you know that those season long stats are a non-factor moving forward.  in the rain, in a very hostile Read more

Outback Bowl Betting Preview: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Auburn Tigers

Outback Bowl - Tampa, Fla.
Wisconsin vs. Auburn
Thursday, 9 am PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Auburn -4.5 O/U 61.5
CRIS Current: Auburn -6.5 O/U 63.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Auburn -3
Paul Stone's Recommendation: Over

One could certainly question the psyche of both combatants in Thursday's Outback Bowl in Tampa. On one sideline, you have defending national champion Auburn (8-4) which buckled under the weight of the nation's most difficult schedule, losing three of its final four regular season games, including a 55-44 defeat at hated rival Alabama.

On the other, there is a Wisconsin (9-3) squad which was sliced and diced by Ohio State, 59-0, in the Big 10 Championship Game. To add insult to injury, Badger head coach Gary Andersen surprisingly bolted Madison four days later, taking the Oregon State job.

Wisconsin has since hired Pittsburgh head coach Paul Chryst, who formerly Read more

Liberty Bowl Betting Preview: West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Texas A&M Aggies

Liberty Bowl - Memphis, Tenn.
West Virginia vs. Texas A&M
Monday, 11 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
West Virginia -3.5 O/U 64
CRIS Current: West Virginia -1.5 O/U 65
Rob Veno's Power Rating: West Virginia -1.5
Paul Stone's Recommendation: West Virginia

Five games into the season, the Texas A&M Aggies had aspirations of qualifying for college football's inaugural four-team playoff. First-time starting quarterback Kenny Hill was even being mentioned as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate.

As the season played out, however, the Aggies, who rose to as high as No. 6 in the polls, were clearly identified as a pretender, losing five of their final seven regular season games and seeing one-time shooting star Hill replaced under center by ballyhooed true freshman Kyle Allen.

On Monday, the Aggies (7-5) of the SEC West seek to end 2014's long and winding road on a Read more

Heart of Dallas Bowl Betting Preview: Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Louisiana Tech Bulldogs

Heart of Dallas Bowl
Saturday, 10 am PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
Louisiana Tech -5 O/U 62
CRIS Current: Louisiana Tech -6 O/U 57
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Louisiana Tech -3

The Big Ten faces off with Conference-USA in this battle between Illinois and Louisiana Tech in today’s Heart Of Dallas Bowl. Based on various reports, despite losing to Marshall in the C-USA title game, Tech is pleased to be playing in Dallas vs. a Power Conference foe. Illinois too should be excited for the postseason considering the downward decline the program suffered prior to this year’s 6-6 result. Head coach Tim Beckman said it best: "We needed to get to a bowl game, our program needs those types of things to move forward. I cannot tell you the excitement that is in Champaign and in our facility with our athletic department to earn a bowl game down here in Dallas."

Despite the conference affiliation, Illinois rightfully finds itself an underdog in this game. The Illini have the offense to points on the board but questions remain whether or not they can mask multiple defensive deficiencies. Read more
