College Football Betting Preview: Colorado State Rams at Alabama Crimson Tide

Colorado State at Alabama
Saturday, 4 pm PT - ESPN2
CRIS Opener:
Alabama -36.5 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: Alabama -39 O/U 51
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Alabama -39.5
Teddy Covers' Recommendation: Colorado State

I’m not a big fan of betting on the big ugly underdog in college football, but this situation is simply too good to ignore.  Alabama has been a pointspread juggernaut throughout the Nick Saban era in every role except one – as a 30+ point favorite over lesser competition.

The Crimson Tide are just 1-6 ATS in their last seven tries in this pointspread range, including an 0-4 mark last year.  Coming off a HUGE win at Texas A&M with their SEC opener against Ole Miss on deck, I’m not expecting an inspired performance from this huge home favorite.

Colorado State head coach Jim McElwain got the job at Colorado State because of his success as Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Auburn Tigers at LSU Tigers

Auburn at LSU
Saturday, 4:45 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener:
LSU -14 O/U 57
CRIS Current: LSU -16.5 O/U 55
Rob Veno's Power Rating: LSU -19
Brent Crow's Recommendation: LSU

Auburn has used a very favorable schedule to get off to a 3-0 start under first-year head coach Gus Mahlzan. The Tigers’ victories have come against Washington State, Arkansas State and Mississippi State; none of which are anywhere near the class of this week’s opponent. The fast start has calmed down the Auburn fans after last year’s disaster under Gene Chizik. While three wins is definitely better than three losses, I am not sure there is much difference between this year’s team and last year’s group. The defense is still a big question mark as Auburn has allowed at least 400 yards of offense in all three wins to offenses that have been subpar otherwise. They were able to force three turnovers against Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils at Stanford Cardinal

Arizona State at Stanford
Saturday, 4 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Stanford -6.5 O/U 52
CRIS Current: Stanford -5.5 O/U 51
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Stanford -11
Rob Veno's Recommendation: Over 1st Half

It was good for the Sun Devils to play Wisconsin last week since the Badgers are a near mirror image of Stanford offensively. ASU’s defense had to deal with the power style rushing attack of Wisconsin and the subsequent play-action passing that goes with it. The problem is, Arizona State didn’t fare all that well at stopping the Badgers who rolled to 441 total yards on 7.0 per play which included 232 rushing yards and 7.2 per carry. That’s a major problem as Todd Graham’s team leaves the cozy confines of Sun Devil Stadium for the first time this season to play at Stanford in their PAC-12 opener.

Another fundamental problem will likely be the Stanford defense which Read more

Thursday Night Football Betting Recap: Six Turnovers doom Philadelphia Eagles

09.20.2013     06:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Submitted by Stat Intelligence

Three weeks into the Chip Kelly era with the Philadelphia Eagles…and we’ve seen one half of mostly scintillating stuff (coming against an opponent that may not have a pass defense), but then five halves that have reminded everyone why it’s so hard to win with fast break football at the professional level.

First Half of Game One: Philadelphia 26, Washington 7

Next 5 Halves Pro-Rated: Philadelphia 11, Opponents 16

That’s an extended run now that represents the equivalent of losing games 32-22 against 2.5 opponents that may not reach the postseason (though KC has a decent Wildcard shot after its 3-0 start).

The Eagles are 1-2, and apparently would be the fourth best team in the AFC West because they just lost home games to San Diego and Kansas City…and are way behind Denver in everyone’s Power Ratings. They do have moments where the Oregon-style attack is a thing of beauty. But, tonight saw:

College Football Handicapping: Week 4 Injury Report

09.19.2013     11:44 AM     Brian Edwards     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Brian Edwards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas QB David Ash remains a question mark (concussion) this week vs. Kansas State. In a 44-23 home loss to Ole Miss, back-up Case McCoy completed 24-of-36 passes for 196 yards and one TD without an interception.  Also, the Longhorns’ best WR Mike Davis is questionable due to a sprained ankle. Davis has hauled in 20 catches for 222 yards and four TDs in just three games.

Mississippi State senior quarterback Tyler Russell is doubtful for Saturday’s home game vs. Troy. Russell threw for 2,897 yards with a 24-to-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio last season, but he might have a difficult time getting his starting job back. In his absence, Dak Prescott has played well. Prescott provides more of a running dimension, rushing for 134 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s heartbreaking loss at Auburn. He completed 15-of-28 passes for 213 yards on The Plains.

Minnesota quarterback Philip Nelson is questionable vs. San Jose due to a strained hamstring. Nelson is an excellent scrambler so a hamstring issue could diminish his effectiveness more than it would most other quarterbacks. He has rushed for 221 yards and three TDs in leading Read more

College Football Betting: Alabama 3-point chalk vs. Oregon for BCS Championship

09.19.2013     07:49 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Twitter, Las Vegas' Golden Nugget sportsbook posted Alabama -3 (-120) vs. Oregon should the two teams meet in the BCS National Championship. The Crimson Tide was -10 vs. Notre Dame in last year's tile game (42-14 win). The year before that they were -2.5 vs. LSU (21-0 win). The Ducks were 1-point chalk in their 22-19 BCS title game loss to Auburn in 2010.
