College Football Gambling: Miami's defense headed in wrong direction

11.21.2013     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Virginia at Miami (FL) -20 O/U 58

It's been rough of late for Miami's defense having allowed 41, 42, and 48 its last three games (0-3 SU/ATS, average loss 21 ppg). In conference play, the Hurricanes rank dead last (14th) in total defense at 478.5 ypg allowed.

“I don’t think we’re doing a good job of executing and playing fundamental football,” safety A.J. Highsmithsaid. “If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Sometimes it has been coverage issues on the back end, and sometimes it is poor tackles on all three levels of the defense. It just feels like it is something here and something there that are resulting in big chunk plays for the other team.”

CRIS Opener:
Baylor -10.5 O/U 78
CRIS Current: Baylor -9.5 O/U 78
Rob Veno's Power Rating: Baylor -7.5
Ian Cameron's Recommendation: Oklahoma State

This sets up to be one of the best games of the week with first place in the Big XII – and a lot more for the road side – on the line. You can’t argue the fact Baylor has been dominant en route to its 9-0 SU and 8-1 ATS records. They’ve won all their games by double digits which might make this pointspread look cheap on the surface. But it has to be said that Baylor’s schedule leaves me questioning whether or not this team has been truly tested by a terrific team as of yet. Their most impressive wins to date have come against Kansas State and Oklahoma. I think the Wildcats are a good couple notches down from last season and I don’t hold the Sooners in very high Read more

College Football Betting Preview: Texas A&M Aggies at LSU Tigers

CRIS Opener:
LSU -4 O/U 70
CRIS Current: LSU -4.5 O/U 70.5
Rob Veno's Power Rating: LSU -3
Brian Edwards' Recommendation: Over

Although it has no bearing on the SEC West race, Saturday’s showdown between Texas A&M and LSU in Baton Rouge has implications galore for these two proud programs.

For starters, this is a recruiting game. Kevin Sumlin is starting to make inroads in Louisiana and Les Miles has always loved to work the I-10 corridor into East Texas. Also, the Aggies would love to avenge a 24-19 home loss to the Tigers last season.

On that afternoon in College Station, Texas A&M (8-2 straight up, 5-5 against the spread) raced out to a 12-0 lead but it could’ve been more. The Aggies had to settle for two field goals, missed an extra point and had a touchdown called back on one of the drives that ended in Read more

College Football Handicapping: Notre Dame preps for BYU's tempo

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
BYU at Notre Dame pk O/U 54.5

Notre Dame talks about prepping for BYU's fast-paced attack. It sounds as if the Irish are going to try to grind it out offensively in order to keep the Cougars' offense off the field. Notre Dame hasn't faced a ton of up-tempo offenses this season with the exception of Arizona State. In that game, the Irish held the Sun Devils to 427 yards with a fair chunk of that coming on ASU's last few drives while playing from behind. The Irish controlled the clock to the tune of 34:38 to 25:22.

“Well, certainly we are practicing tempo,” he said. “And they run 90 plays if your offense is three and out, three and out, three and out. So we are practicing on both ends from that standpoint. We have done a pretty good job of holding on to the football, and we’ll need to do that.

College Football Handicapping: Washington's Price doubtful vs. Oregon State

Washington at Oregon State

Looks like Washington is preparing to go with freshman quarterback Cyler Miles for Saturday's game at Oregon State. Starter Keith Price (shoulder) left last week's game against UCLA. Sportsmemo Handicapper Rob Veno’s Power Rating shows Washington -1 based on Price being healthy.

"With what our medical team has done, in my opinion (they) have done a great job already identifying it," Sarkisian said. "The swelling is reducing rapidly. His movement is much better today than it was the last couple of days. So we'll see where he's at Thursday."

College Football Betting: LSU short home favorites vs. Texas A&M

Texas A&M at LSU -4

Unique situation for LSU on Saturday with the Tigers playing host to Texas A&M – the first time in recent memory they've faced a capable foe following their rivalry tilt vs. the Crimson Tide. Over the last seven years, only twice had LSU played an SEC opponent in this situation and in both instances they were sizable favorites. Heading into Saturday's matchup, Les Miles didn't sound too excited about having to prepare for the contrast in styles from Alabama to A&M. LSU won last year's meeting in College Station, 24-19. The Tigers were outgained 410-316 but benefited from a +5 turnover margin.

College Football Gambling: Missouri's Franklin gets starting nod vs. Ole Miss

Missouri -3 at Mississippi

Despite not having played in over a month, Missouri will start quarterback James Franklin for Saturday's game at Ole Miss. The Tigers went 3-1 with backup Maty Mauk under center (951 yards, 51.7% completions, 10 TDs, 2 INTs). Mizzou is 3-0 ATS as road chalk this season with wins by 31, 23, and 17.

“That’s really good for his timing to get back in there,” Pinkel said. “He looks really good. He’s excited about getting back. The team’s excited about having him back.”

“It’s definitely a confidence booster because the guy knows the offense like no other,” wideout L’Damian Washington said. “He knows the offense. He knows where guys are going to be. Just to see a guy after all his

College Football Handicapping: Nebraska says no letdown vs. Penn State

Nebraska at Penn State -1.5

Any hope Nebraska had of reaching the Big Ten Championship was eliminated following last week's home loss to Michigan State. The team is saying all the right things in terms of playing for pride, no letdown, etc. heading into Saturday's game at Penn State. Under Bo Pelini, the Cornhuskers are 14-5 SU and 10-8-1 ATS off of a loss.

“We’re competitors. We want to win ballgames. That’s the main thing,” Rose said. “And then for the young guys, just continue to build chemistry on the team, continue to fight. The season is not over. Just because we’re not going to get to the Big Ten championship this year doesn’t mean our season is over.”

“The last thing we need is to go

Baylor went from +11 at Oklahoma State to -8.5. Iowa was catching doubles from Michigan but now nearly a touchdown favorite. Teddy Covers' Las Vegas Wise Guy Report: NFC Super Bowl Contenders

11.18.2013     12:31 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It’s late November.  Thanksgiving is next week.  And that means it’s time for me to take a break from my typical team notes column that I’ve been writing here in the Vegas Wiseguy Report since the start of the NFL season.

It’s time to focus on the big boys – teams with playoff aspirations.  Who can get hot down the stretch and make us some money winning games and covering pointspreads?  Which squads are legitimate Super Bowl contenders; which are pretenders.  Let’s take look through the NFC this week, gauging which squads have ATS value moving forward, and which squads have already reached their zenith, poised to tumble back to earth down the stretch.

I did not include notes on Carolina (they don’t play till Monday Night) and Dallas (on bye this week) due to space limitations.  That leaves Philadelphia, the New York Giants, Detroit, Chicago, Green Bay, New Orleans, Seattle, San Francisco and Arizona to consider; all of whom remain live for the postseason as Week 12 approaches.
