College Football Betting Preview: Iowa Hawkeyes at Iowa State Cyclones

Iowa at Iowa State
Saturday, 1:45 pm PT - FOX
CRIS Opener:
Iowa -4.5 O/U 54
CRIS Current: Iowa -3.5 O/U 52.5
Recommendation: Under

From a historical perspective, it's interesting that this weekend's Iowa-Iowa State game is totaled at 52.5 (opened 54). The two squads obviously play one another each season and over the last 10 seasons, not one game was lined above 49.5. Taking it a step further, of those 10 games, not once did the score top 48 in regulation. And there's a logical reason for this: Iowa, who is usually the stronger of the two teams, tends to play at a slow pace with a focus on running the football.

The question now becomes, has anything changed with either squad to warrant the inflated total? Neither squad is tremendous defensively, though as we saw last season, when healthy and at full strength, the Hawkeyes have the ability to be above average. Over its first five games last year, Iowa allowed 17.2 ppg. It wasn't until they started playing capable and sometimes dynamic offenses that the unit was exposed. I'm not sure Iowa State qualifies as dynamic. Despite playing in a number Read more

College Football Gambling Update: Texas switches play caller after one game

09.09.2015     07:18 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Knee-jerk or justified? The jury is out as Texas head coach Charlie Strong announced that wide receiver coach Jay Norvell will now call plays following Week 1's 38-3 loss to Notre Dame. Norvell takes over for co-OC Shawn Watson. Yes, the Longhorns' offense performance against the Irish was abysmal but playing on the road against a top-tier defense as you attempt to break in a new offense isn't ideal. We'll see how the Longhorns respond this weekend against Rice. The Owls return four starters on defense after allowing 28.5 ppg last year. Note the Rice's schedule included seven teams that ranked 100th or worse in total offense.

"We have to evaluate every aspect of this program and what's key is getting this program on track," Strong said during a Tuesday evening press conference. "We have to do a better job of coaching.

College Football Betting Preview: Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Virginia Cavaliers

Notre Dame at Virginia
Saturday, 12:30 pm PT - ABC
CRIS Opener:
Notre Dame -10 O/U 51.5
CRIS Current: Notre Dame -11.5 O/U 47.5
Recommendation: Virginia

There is not much to dislike about Notre Dame’s impressive 38-3 romp over the Texas Longhorns last week. For starters, they outgained the Longhorns by a stunning 527-163 margin. Quarterback Malik Zaire was terrific completing 19-for-22 passes for 313 yards with 3 TDs and no picks and the ground attack led by C.J. Prosise and Josh Adams combined for 147 yards and 5.88 yards per carry. It was dominance on both sides of the line of scrimmage for Notre Dame who allowed just 60 rushing yards at a paltry 2.1 yards per carry clip and yielded barely over 100 yards passing amazing when you consider UT was playing the entire game from behind. However, as a result, we appear to be laying a tax with the Irish to go along with the early market support.

Virginia didn’t play its best in a 34-16 loss at UCLA but it is never an easy travel/scheduling situation Read more

College Football Betting Preview: LSU Tigers at Mississippi State Bulldogs

LSU at Mississippi State
Saturday, 6:15 pm PT - ESPN
CRIS Opener: LSU -2 O/U 49
CRIS Current: LSU -4 O/U 49.5
Recommendation: LSU

It's an early season battle in the SEC as LSU travels to Starkville to kick off conference play against Mississippi State. Because of a severe storm that affected many states in the Southern part of the country, LSU's scheduled opener against McNeese State on Saturday was cancelled, making this contest their first of the campaign. As for Mississippi State, the Bulldogs won but failed to cover in 34-16 triumph over Southern Miss. Much of the victory was in part due to special teams and defense. Brandon Holloway returned a kick for 100 yards and the stop unit held USM to a respectable 5.16 ypp and forced two turnovers.

This weekend's battle will be a lot tougher for quarterback Dak Prescott as the 5th-year senior didn’t look particularly sharp last week completing only 22-of-38 passes. He was able to offset it by rushing for a team-high 72 yards. Note that Prescott will be a top priority for the Bayou Bengals’ defense under first-year Read more

College Football Gambling: Kansas' long season starts with a bang

09.08.2015     08:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
If there are any positives for the Kansas Jayhawks it's that first-year head coach David Beaty is a realist and knows pointspreads. Following Week 1's 41-38 loss to South Dakota, Beaty noted that his team is likely to be underdogs in every game this season. We agree as a trip to Iowa State and a home tilt against Texas Tech likely serve as the only semi-competitively line affairs. Despite falling behind 31-7, some of the final box score actually favored the Jayhawks. Even with a 91-yard kickoff return, KU outgained SDSU 576-463 and ran the ball for 285 yards (5.6 ypc). The defense however was atrocious as SDSU averaged 6.43 ypp. This week's opponent, Memphis, opened as -11.5 road chalk, but have already been bet up to -13.5/-14.

“Until we earn it, we’re gonna be underdogs in every game we have,” said Beaty, whose Jayhawks are double-digit dogs for their Week 2 contest against Memphis. “That’s just the way it is. And we need to be playing like we’re the underdogs.”

College Football Handicapping: Back to the drawing board for Texas' offense

09.08.2015     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not every team can make a seamless transition from traditional to up-tempo offense. Texas managed only 163 yards in Week 1's 38-3 blowout loss at Notre Dame. Keep in mind that the Irish defense, when healthy and not littered with suspensions like what occurred the back half of last season, is a top 20 unit. That said, the performance didn't bode well for the Longhorns after saying they wanting to pick up the pace in 2015. UT's next three opponents present far better opportunities to move the football with Rice (55th in total defense LY), Oklahoma State (93rd), and California (124th) all headed to Austin. Of course one game into the season and head coach Charlie Strong is already questioning his offensive coordinator.

"We have to change. We have to get better on offense," Strong said of his Texas team.

"Things can always get fixed," Strong said, continuing saying that it's just about rolling up your sleeps and getting things done.

College Football Betting Update: Penn State shows no sign of o-line improvement

09.08.2015     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

So much for an improvement. Penn State made shoring up its offensive line a top priority after 2014's disaster. We won't lay all the blame on the unit during Week 1's loss to Temple, but it certainly was as major issue. The Owls completely dominated the Nittany Lions in the trenches with 10 sacks and only 2.9 yards per carry allowed. PSU has now allowed 54 sacks over its last 14 games.

College Football Gambling: BYU offense should be fine despite loss of Hill

09.07.2015     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We all knew it was a matter of time before BYU's Taysom Hill went down with some sort of injury. It just happened to occur in Week 1 and be of the season-ending variety. The Cougars are no strangers to playing without Hill under center. They lost him in Week 6 last season and while the Cougs were 4-0 SU in games he finished, there wasn't that much of a drop off in offensive production following his departure. In four games with Hill, BYU averaged 450 ypg and 37.5 ppg. In eight games without Hill, BYU averaged 470 ypg and 39 ppg. Those numbers were boosted thanks to a 64-0 win over Savannah State but the Cougs' shortcomings without Hill (4-4 SU, 3-5 ATS) were just as much a defensive issue as not having a key player. Freshman Tanner Mangum replaced Hill and threw the game winning Hail Mary against Nebraska on Saturday. Magnum, who is about to turn 22 years old, comes in highly regarded. He isn't much of a runner so the offense will need to be adjusted in a hurry as BYU returns home to play host to Boise State. That said, BYU's offense looks to be in decent hands.

East Carolina at Florida
